Chapter 1. Pr oduct overview This chapter pr ovides an overview of the tablet, including the locations of the connect ors and contr ols, tablet features, accessories, specications, oper ating envir onment, and pr einstalled widgets and applications.
1 P ower button Pr ess and hold the power button for a few seconds t o turn on the tablet. T o turn off the tablet, press and hold the power button for a few seconds, and then touch OK from the P ower off menu. When the tablet is on, press the power butt on once to lock or unlock the scr een.
11 USB connector Open the USB connector cover t o access the full-size USB connector . Use the full-size USB connector to connect a compatible USB device, such as a USB stor age device or a USB keyboard. See “Using the full-size USB connector ” on page 47.

Chapter 2. Getting started This chapter helps you quickly start using your tablet. Installing the SIM card If your tablet has a wir eless W AN featur e, it might r equire a SIM car d to establish wireless WAN connections.
Setting up your tablet The rst time you turn on your tablet, the Setup Wizar d is displayed t o help you set up your tablet step by step. T ouch the right arrow t o go to the ne xt step after you nish a setting. 1. Language and Time Zone Select the language you want to use on your tablet and set the date and time.
Y our Google Account T o optimize your tablet capabilities, r egister and sign in t o a Google Account to use Google applications, download applications fr om Android Market, back up your settings and other data to Google servers, and take advantage of other Google services on your tablet.
Changing the synchronization settings for a Google Account T o congur e the synchronization settings for a Google Account, do the following: 1. Open the Accounts & sync settings screen. 2. T ouch the account that you want t o synchr onize with your tablet.
• Google V oice Sear ch : Sear ch for information on the Internet by speaking. See “Searching the Internet” on page 36 for more information. • Applications : Open the application library t o view all installed applications. • Customiz e : Open the Home scr eens customization view t o customize the Home scr eens.
7 Browser Launch the Browser application. 8 F eatures and messages Receive information and tips about your tablet, as well as special offers in congur ed categories. This icon is displayed only when ther e are unread syst em notications from Lenovo.
Drag T o move an item such as an image and an icon on the scr een, touch and hold your nger on the it em, move your nger to the desired location, and then take your nger off the screen.
Y our tablet is pr einstalled with the Android keyboar d and the FlexT9 keyboar d. Y ou can download more input methods fr om Android Market. T yping t ext, numbers, symbols, and other characters When you need t o type t ext, t ouch the te xt eld to bring up the onscreen keyboar d, then t ouch keys on the keyboard to type.
5. T ouch the Back button when you ar e done. If you have congured multiple languages and want t o switch to another language when you are typing te xt, do the following: • F or the Android k eyboard : 1. T ouch and hold the settings key to bring up the input method selection dialog bo x.

Downloading games and applications T o e xtend the functionality of your tablet, download and install additional applications from Android Market and Lenovo App Shop. Both Android Market and L enovo App Shop provide an easy and quick way for you to shop for games and mobile applications.
2. T ouch the App shortcuts tab, the Widgets tab, or the Mor e tab to select the desired item that you want to add. 3. Dr ag the it em t o the Home screen where you want to add it. If you drag it to a Home scr een and pause befor e lifting your nger , the Home screen enlarges so you can place the item wher e you want it to be locat ed.
Customizing Lenovo Launch Z one Customiz e L enovo Launch Z one by changing the background color , the transpar ency level, and other settings to meet your personal prefer ences. T o change the background color and the transpar ency level of L enovo Launch Zone, do the following: 1.

Chapter 3. Connecting to wir eless networks and devices Y our tablet can connect t o a variety of networks and devices, including mobile networks (2G or 3G), Wi-Fi data networks, and Bluetooth devices. Note: Some tablet models can connect to both mobile networks (2G or 3G) and Wi-Fi networks, while others can connect t o Wi-Fi networks only .
Editing or creating a GSM access point name If your tablet connects to a Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) mobile network (2G or 3G), and you need to edit the settings for an e xisting access point name (APN) or cr eate a new APN, you must obtain the APN and detailed settings from your service carrier .
Connecting to a Wi-Fi network Wi-Fi is a wir eless networking technology that provides network access at distances of up to 100 meters (328 feet) depending on the Wi-Fi r outer and your surr oundings. Y ou can connect any ThinkP ad T ablet t o a Wi-Fi network.
5. T ouch F orget . The details of the Wi-Fi network are erased. Using Bluetooth devices Bluetooth is a short-range wir eless communications t echnology . Use Bluetooth to establish a wir eless connection with another Bluetooth-enabled device over a distance of about 10 m (32.

Chapter 4. Battery and ac power This chapter pr ovides instructions on how to charge the batt ery, how t o extend the battery life between charges, and how t o view the battery status. Charging the batt er y Y our tablet is shipped with a ThinkPad T ablet AC Char ger t o char ge your tablet from any standard ac power outlet.

Extending the battery life between charges When you are tr aveling outdoors with your tablet and the ac power is not available, you can extend the battery life by doing the following: • T urn off Bluetooth and Wi-Fi when not in use . T o turn off Bluet ooth and Wi-Fi, do the following: 1.
T o check for the accur ate status, touch the battery status icon from the system bar to open the Status Details panel. The remaining batt ery power percentage is displayed in the panel. Y ou also can get much more detailed battery status by doing the following: 1.
Chapter 5. Using your tablet This chapter provides instructions on how to use many of your tablet’ s features and some preinstalled applications. F requently asked questions Use the Home screen tips t o look for some basic operating instructions. T o view the Home screen tips, do the following: 1.
• General P acket Radio Service (GPRS) If you choose to use a mobile data network, you might have to sign up for a data plan with your service carrier in your ar ea. With some carriers, you can choose a data plan, track your data usage, and change or cancel your plan.
– Page info : View the details of the current Web page. – Downloads : View and manage downloaded les. – Settings : Congure your browser settings, such as setting a home page, clearing cache, setting te xt size, and so on. • Viewing W eb pages T o view a specic W eb page, do the following: 1.

The Android Settings screen opens. 2. T ouch Applications ➙ Unknown sources to enable the feature t o permit installation of applications from Web sites.
Google Search T o search by typing, do the following: 1. F r om a Home scr een, t ouch the Google Search icon on the action bar . 2. T ype a keywor d or other te xt using the onscr een keyboard. As you type, the search results that fully or partially match the te xt being typed ar e displayed on a menu below the sear ch box.
Capturing Wi-Fi proles from your ThinkP ad notebook computer Notes: T o capture Wi-Fi proles, the host ThinkP ad not ebook computer must have the following installed: • Windows 7 operating sys.
When enabled, the Wi-Fi connection will be disabled after the scr een is locked. Y ou can set when Wi-Fi will be turned off after the screen is locked by t ouching Set minutes .

Listening to music Y our tablet is pr einstalled with the Amazon MP3 application and the mSpot Music application. Both applications enable you to list en to, download, or purchase music fr om the W eb sites. T ouch Listen from Lenovo Launch Zone to launch the default music player application.
Note: Use Bluetooth t o transfer small-siz e les only such as a picture or a song. It takes a long time to transfer a large le using Bluetooth. W orking with Email Use the Email application t o read and send e-mails and manage all your e-mail accounts.

Managing your contacts The Contacts application enables you to cr eate, stor e, and manage information about your friends, family, and colleagues. Adding a contact 1. The F avorit e Apps utility displays launch points for six applications. Each launch point is a screen repr esentation of that application with the launcher icon in the bottom left corner . T ouch a launch point t o launch the application. T o add an application to the F avorit e Apps utility, do the following: 1.

If you have installed a ash media car d in your tablet and you want to view the information stor ed on the card from your computer , touch this option. • T ransfer les (Media T ransfer Prot ocol) The Media T r ansfer Prot ocol (MTP) supports the transfer of multimedia data without additional device drivers.
• Disconnect the device pr ogrammatically and then physically as follows: 1. F r om the main Home screen, touch the Android Settings icon on Lenovo Launch Zone, or touch the applications icon from the action bar and then touch Settings . The Android Settings screen opens.
Use any one of these car ds to ext end the st orage capability of your tablet. Y ou also can use these car ds to share data with a computer or other device that supports these card formats. T o locate the 3-in-1 media card r eader , see “T ablet layout” on page 1.
Securing your ash media card T o protect the information from unauthoriz ed access, you can encrypt your ash media car d. Refer to “Encrypting the ash media card” on page 65 for mor e information.
W orking with Google Maps and GPS Use the Google Maps application to nd your current location, get dir ections t o your destination, and nd other location-based information. T o search for places or nd your current location using Google Maps, you must enable the r esources requir ed for plotting positions by doing the following: 1.
Google T alk Google T alk is an instant messaging progr am. Use it to communicate with other Google T alk users by t ext, audio, or video. T o launch the Google T alk application, touch the applications icon from the action bar , and then touch Google T alk .
Y ouT ube Y ouT ube is Google’ s online video streaming service that enables you to view videos and upload your own videos t o share with others. Waching videos on Y ouT ube T o view Y ouT ube videos, do the following: 1. F r om the action bar , touch the applications icon to open the application library .

Chapter 6. ThinkP ad T ablet options Y our tablet might come with a ThinkP ad T ablet Keyboard F olio C ase or a ThinkP ad T ablet Dock. If your tablet does not come with one, you can pur chase one fr om Lenovo at http://www.lenovo.com/accessories/services/index.
ThinkP ad T ablet Dock The ThinkP ad T ablet Dock holds your tablet in an upright position and fr ees your hands t o do other tasks. It also provides you easy access t o connectors for USB devices, le tr ansfers, charging, audio input, audio output, and video output.

Using the ThinkP ad T ablet Dock T o connect your tablet t o the dock, do the following: 1. P osition your tablet with the dock connector side downwar d. 2. Align the dock connector on the tablet with the connector on the dock. 3. Gently slide your tablet into the dock until it is fully seated as shown in the following illustration.

Chapter 7. Using your tablet within an enterprise Y our tablet pr ovides support for secur e access to corpor ate networks and Microsoft Exchange. Additionally, a number of business-r elated applications are preinstalled to help you work with and manage your work-relat ed documents.
