Overview This guide is intended to be used by customers who are r eplacing Customer Replaceable Units (CRUs) as well as trained service personnel who are r eplacing Field Replaceable Units (FRUs). In this guide, CRUs and FRUs will often be referr ed to as parts.
Additional information resources If you have Internet access, the most up-to-date information for your computer is available from the W orld W ide W eb.
Chapter 1. Locations This chapter provides illustrations to help locate the various connectors, contr ols and components of the computer . To remove the computer cover , see “Removing the computer cover” on page 5. Locating components The following illustration will help you locate the various components in your computer .
Locating connectors on the front of the computer The following illustration shows the location of connectors on the front of the computer . 1 USB connector 3 Headphone connector 2 US.

Identifying parts on the system board The system board (sometimes called the planar or motherboard ) is the main cir cuit board in your computer . It pr ovides basic computer functions and supports a variety of devices. The following illustration shows the locations of parts on the system board.
Chapter 2. Replacing hardware Attention: Do not remove the computer cover or attempt any r epair before reading the “Important safety information” in the Quick Reference that was included with your computer or in the Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) for the computer .

Removing and replacing the front bezel To remove and replace the fr ont bezel: 1. Remove the computer cover . See “Removing the computer cover” on page 5. 2. Remove the front bezel by r eleasing the three plastic tabs inside the chassis and push the bezel outward as shown.
Replacing the power supply Attention: Do not remove the computer cover or attempt any r epair before reading the “Important safety information” in the Quick Reference that was included with your computer or in the Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) for the computer .
Replacing the system board assembly Attention: Do not remove the computer cover or attempt any r epair before reading the “Important safety information” in the Quick Reference that was included with your computer or in the Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) for the computer .
8. Remove the heat sink 1 from the system boar d by removing the four screws. Then, carefully lift up the heat sink of f the mounting brackets. Place the heat sink on its side on a clean, flat surface so the thermal material on the bottom of the heat sink does not touch the surface and become contaminated.
10. Using the vacuum pen 1 , remove the micr oprocessor from the system boar d socket by lifting it straight up and out of the socket. Important Do not touch the gold contacts on the bottom of the micropr ocessor . If you must touch the micropr ocessor , touch only the sides.
11 . On the new system board, r elease and pivot the locking lever , then pivot the micropr ocessor retainer until it is open. Note: There will be a black plastic cover on the r etainer to protect the micropr ocessor socket. As you close the microprocessor r etainer , remove the black plastic cover .
15. Install the four screws 1 to secur e the heat sink. 16. Install the new system board assembly into the computer chassis, align the screw holes, and install the scr ews. Note: Use only the screws pr ovided by Lenovo. 17. Reconnect all cables that were disconnected fr om the system board.
Replacing the microprocessor Attention: Do not remove the computer cover or attempt any r epair before reading the “Important safety information” in the Quick Reference that was included with your computer or in the Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) for the computer .
3. Remove the heat sink 1 from the system boar d by removing the four screws. Then, carefully lift up the heat sink of f the mounting brackets. Place the heat sink on its side on a clean, flat surface so the thermal material on the bottom of the heat sink does not touch the surface and become contaminated.

6. On the system board, r elease and pivot the locking lever , then pivot the micropr ocessor retainer until it is open. 7. Loosen the protective cover 3 that pr otects the gold contacts on the new micropr ocessor 2 but do not remove it.
10. Use the thermal grease syringe to place five dr ops of grease on the top of the micropr ocessor . Each drop of gr ease should be 0.03ml (3 tick marks on the grease syringe). 11 . Position the heat sink on the heat sink mounting bracket and align the four holes of the heat sink with the holes on the system board.
Replacing a memory module Attention: Do not remove the computer cover or attempt any r epair before reading the “Important safety information” in the Quick Reference that was included with your computer or in the Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) for the computer .
Replacing an adapter Attention: Do not remove the computer cover or attempt any r epair before reading the “Important safety information” in the Quick Reference that was included with your computer or in the Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) for the computer .
3. Install the new adapter into the same adapter connector . 4. Ensure the adapter is fully seated into the adapter connector . 5. At the rear of the computer , align the scr ew hole and install the screw to secure the adapter . 6. Go to “Completing the installation” on page 29.
Important When you receive a new har d disk drive, you will also receive a set of Product Recovery CD . The set of Pr oduct Recovery CD will enable you to restore the contents of the hard disk to the same state as when your computer was originally shipped from the factory .
Replacing an optical drive Attention: Do not remove the computer cover or attempt any r epair before reading the “Important safety information” in the Quick Reference that was included with your computer or in the Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) for the computer .
Replacing the diskette drive Attention: Do not remove the computer cover or attempt any r epair before reading the “Important safety information” in the Quick Reference that was included with your computer or in the Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) for the computer .
5. Slide the new diskette drive into the drive bay so that the screw holes align with those in the drive bay . 6. Install the two screws to secur e the diskette drive.
4. Remove the four screws that secur e the system fan assembly at the rear of chassis. 5. Lift the system fan assembly out of chassis. 6. Install the new system fan assembly into the chassis so that the screw holes in the system fan assembly align with those in the chassis.
4. Remove the screw that secur es the front audio/USB panel card and lift the front audio/USB panel car d out of the lower slot. 5. Insert bottom of the new front audio/USB panel in the lower slot. 6. Align the front audio/USB panel with the scr ew hole.
Note: Y our keyboar d might be connected to the standard keyboar d connector 1 at the rear of the computer or to a USB connector 2 at either the fr ont or rear of the computer . 4. Disconnect the failing keyboard cable fr om the computer and connect the new keyboard cable to the same connector .
2. Locate the internal speaker 1 . 3. Locate the internal speaker connector , see “Identifying parts on the system board” on page 4. 4. Disconnect the speaker cable from the system boar d. 5. Remove the speaker by sliding it upward and out of the r etaining bracket.
3. Position the computer cover on the chassis so that the rail guides on the bottom of the computer cover engage the rails. Then, push the computer cover closed and install the screws. 4. If a cover lock is installed, lock the cover . 5. Reconnect the external cables and power cords into the computer .
Updating (flashing) BIOS from a diskette or CD-ROM Important Start the Setup Utility program to view your system information. See “Starting the Setup Utility” in your Quick Reference or in the Hardwar e Maintenance Manual .
