Chapter 1. About this manual This manual contains service and r eference information for ThinkCentre® computers listed on the cover . It is intended only for trained servicers who ar e familiar with Lenovo® computer pr oducts.

Chapter 2. Safety information This chapt er contains the safety information that you need t o be familiar with before servicing a computer . General safety F ollow these rules t o ensur e gener al safety: • Observe good housekeeping in the area of the machines during and aft er maintenance.
Important: Use only approved tools and test equipment. Some hand t ools have handles cover ed with a soft material that does not insulate you when working with live electrical currents. Many cust omers have, near their equipment, rubber oor mats that contain small conductive bers to decr ease electr ostatic dischar ges.
Safety inspection guide The int ent of this inspection guide is to assist you in identifying potentially unsafe conditions on these products. Each machine, as it was designed and built, had r equired safety items installed to pr otect users and service personnel from injury .
• Wear a gr ounded wrist str ap against your skin to eliminat e static on your body . • Pr event the part fr om touching your clothing. Most clothing is insulative and r etains a char ge even when you ar e wearing a wrist str ap. • Use the black side of a grounded work mat to pr ovide a static-free work surface.
• When possible, use one hand only to connect or disconnect signal cables. • Never turn on any equipment when there is evidence of re, water , or structur al damage.

Chapter 4. General Checkout Attention The drives in the comput er you ar e servicing might have been r earranged or the drive startup sequence changed. Be e xtremely careful during write oper ations such as copying, saving, or formatting. Data or progr ams can be overwritten if you select an incorr ect drive.
– Has this congur ation ever worked? – If it has been working, what changes were made prior t o it failing? – Is this the original r eported failure? • Diagnostics version – T ype and ver.
Chapter 5. T roubleshooting and diagnostics This chapter describes some basic tr oubleshooting and diagnostic progr ams. If your computer problem is not described her e, see “Diagnostics” on page 51 for additional tr oubleshooting resour ces.
Symptom Action The wir eless keyboar d or mouse does not work. V erify that: • The computer is turned on. • The battery or batteries installed in the wir eless keyboard or mouse ar e in good condition. • The wireless congur ations are all set corr ectly .
T r oubleshooting Use the tr oubleshooting information t o nd solutions to pr oblems that have denite symptoms. If the symptom your comput er is e xperiencing occurred immediat ely after a new har dware option or new software installed, do the following befor e referring to the tr oubleshooting information: 1.
• Some models have a front audio panel you can use to adjust volume. If you have a fr ont audio panel, verify that the volume is not set too low. • V erify that your ext ernal speakers (and headphones, if used) ar e connect ed t o the correct audio connector on the computer .

Black scr een instead of DVD video Symptom: Black screen instead of DVD video Actions: • Restart the DVD player progr am. • Close any open les, turn off the computer , and then r estart the computer . • T ry a lower screen resolution or color depth.
• Ensure that a DVD disc is in the drive with the shiny side of the disc facing down. • Ensure that video r esolution is set to less than 1152 x 864. • On computers that have a CD-ROM or CD-RW drive in addition t o a DVD-ROM drive, make sur e that the DVD disc is in the drive labeled “DVD”.
If these actions do not corr ect the pr oblem, have the computer and keyboar d serviced. See “ Additional information r esources” on page 30 for details. The mouse or pointing device does not work Symptom: The mouse or pointing device does not work.

Actions: Mak e sure that: • The cable is installed properly . The network cable must be securely connected t o both the E thernet connector of your computer and the RJ45 connector of the hub. The maximum allowable distance fr om the computer to hub is 100 meters.
If your computer is a Gigabit Ethernet model, it cannot connect to the network at 1000 Mbps. Instead, it connects at 100 Mbps Symptom: If your computer is a Gigabit Ethernet model, it cannot connect to the network at 1000 Mbps. Instead, it connects at 100 Mbps.
4. Select the Playback tab. 5. If you ar e using Headset pr ole, select Bluetooth Hands-fr ee Audio and click the Set Default button. If you are using A V pr ole, select Stereo Audio and click the Set Default butt on. 6. Click OK t o close the Sound window .

• Clean out your Inbo x, Sent Items, and Deleted Items folders fr om your e-mail application. The folder names and pr ocedures vary depending on your e-mail application.
• If the serial device has its own On/Off switch, make sur e it is in the On position. • If the serial device has an Online switch, make sur e it is in the Online position. • If the serial device is a printer , make sure paper is loaded correctly .

Running the diagnostic program from a diagnostic disc This section provides instructions on how to run the diagnostic pr ogram from a diagnostic disc that you creat ed. T o run the diagnostic progr am from a diagnostic disc that you cr eated, do the following: 1.

Chapter 6. Using the Setup Utility progr am The Setup Utility pr ogram is used t o view and change the congur ation settings of your comput er , regar dless of which oper ating system you ar e using. However , the oper ating system settings might override any similar settings in the Setup Utility progr am.
• Have at least eight char acters in length • Contain at least one alphabetic char acter and one numeric char acter • Setup Utility progr am is not case sensitive • Not be your name or your us.
• Select A T A Drive Setup to enable or disable an int ernal or ext ernal SA T A device. 4. Select the desired settings and press Enter . 5. P ress F10 to save changes and exit the Setup Utility pr ogram. See “Exiting the Setup Utility progr am” on page 59.
