Chapter 1. About this manual This Hardware Maintenance Manual contains information to help you solve problems that might occur in your server . It describes the diagnostic tools that come with the server , error codes and suggested actions, and instructions for replacing failing components.

RoHS compliant ThinkServer™ TD230 parts have unique FRU part numbers. Before or after June 2006, failed RoHS compliant parts must always be r eplaced using RoHS compliant FRUs, so only the FRUs identied as compliant in the syst em Har dware Maint enance Manual or dir ect substitutions for those FRUs can be used.

Chapter 2. Gener al information This chapter provides some gener al information about your server . F eatur es and specications The following table pr ovides information about the featur es and specications of the server . Depending on the server model, some features might not be available, or some specications might not apply .

Chapter 3. Diagnostics This chapt er describes the diagnostic t ools that ar e available to help you solve pr oblems that might occur in the server . If you cannot diagnose and correct a problem by using the information in this chapter , see Appendix B “Getting help and technical assistance” on page 163 for more information.
Symptom Action 3. Replace the DVD drive. The DVD drive tray is not working. 1. Make sur e that the server is turned on. 2. Insert the end of a str aightened paper clip int o the manual tr ay-release opening. 3. Reseat the DVD drive. 4. Replace the DVD drive.
Symptom Action A problem occurs only occasionally and is difcult to diagnose. 1. Make sure that: • All cables and cor ds ar e connected secur ely to the rear of the server and attached devices. • When the server is turned on, air is owing from the fan grille.
• See the parts listing in the Hardware Maint enance Manual t o determine which components ar e customer replaceable units (CRUs) and which components ar e eld r eplaceable units (FRUs). • If an action step is preceded by “(T r ained service technician only), ” that step must be performed only by a tr ained service technician.
Symptom Action The server emits a continuous beep during the POS T , indicating that the startup (boot) micropr ocessor is not working corr ectly . 1. Make sure that the server supports all the micropr ocessors and that the micropr ocessors match in speed and cache siz e.
Symptom Action The monit or has scr een jitter , or the screen image is wavy, unreadable, rolling, or distorted. 1. If the monit or self-tests show that the monitor is working corr ectly, consider the location of the monitor .
Symptom Action 3. Replace the device that you just installed. A Lenovo optional device that used to work does not work now. 1. Make sur e that all of the hardwar e and cable connections for the device are secure. 2. If the device comes with test instructions, use those instructions to test the device.
Symptom Action 5. If you just installed an optional device, remove it, and r estart the server . If the server now starts, you might have installed more devices than the power supply supports. 6. See “Solving undet ermined pr oblems” on page 24. The server does not turn off.
Software problems • F ollow the suggest ed actions in the or der in which they are listed in the Action column until the pr oblem is solved. • See the parts listing in the Hardware Maint enance Manual t o determine which components ar e customer replaceable units (CRUs) and which components ar e eld r eplaceable units (FRUs).
3. Remove the adapt ers and disconnect the cables and power cor ds to all int ernal and external devices until the server is at the minimum congur ation that is requir ed for the server t o start (see “Solving undetermined pr oblems” on page 24 for the minimum congur ation).
Check the LEDs on all the power supplies. If the LEDs indicate that the power supplies ar e working correctly, do the following: 1. T urn off the server . 2. Make sure that the server is cabled corr ectly . 3. Remove or disconnect the following devices, one at a time, until you nd the failure.

Chapter 4. L ocating parts, controls, LEDs, and connectors This chapt er pr ovides information to help you locate your server parts, controls, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and connectors. Chapter 5. Replacing FRUs This chapter pr ovides detailed instructions for r eplacing FRUs in the server . FRU replacements ar e t o be done only by tr ained service t echnicians. This chapter does not contain the r emove or r eplace pr ocedure for all FRUs.
• T o view the error LEDs on the syst em boar d and internal components, leave the server connected to power . • Y ou do not have t o turn off the server to install or replace hot-swap fans, r edundant hot-swap ac power supplies, or hot-plug USB devices.
• T ake additional car e when handling devices during cold weather . Heating reduces indoor humidity and incr eases static electricity . W orking inside the server with the power on Attention: Stati.
4. Remove the cover . 5. Check for any obvious non-Lenovo alter ations. Use good judgment as t o the safety of any non-L enovo alter ations. 6. Check inside the server for any obvious unsafe conditions, such as metal lings, contamination, water or other liquid, or signs of r e or smoke damage.
Removing the server cover Attention: Do not open your server or attempt any repair before r eading and understanding the Safety Information and the Warranty and Support Information on the ThinkServer Documentation DVD that came with your product, and “Guidelines” on page 39 .
4. Loosen the two thumbscr ews attached on the r ear of the server cover and then slide the server cover to the r ear . Notes: a. The two thumbscr ews ar e securely installed and you need t o use a tool, for example a scr ew driver , to loosen the thumbscrews.
5. Pivot the server cover outward to completely remove it. Figure 12. Removing the server cover T o r einstall the server cover , see “Installing the server cover” on page 122.
3. Remove the fr ont bez el by releasing the thr ee plastic tabs 1 on the left side and pulling the front bezel outwar d. Figure 13. Removing the fr ont bezel 4.
The hard disk drive side door of the server is unlocked when shipped fr om the factory . Y ou can open the side door t o view the hot-swap har d disk drive LED status, install a new hard disk drive, and r emove or replace a failing hard disk drive.
2. Rotate the plastic latch of the side door to the closed position. Then, close the side door until it snaps into position. The side door is locked and cannot be opened when you press the blue button.
3. T o unlock the side door , r emove the server cover . See “Removing the server cover” on page 43. Then, rotat e the plastic latch of the side door to the open position. Reinstall the server cover . See “Installing the server cover” on page 122.

4. Open the retaining clips of the memory slot into which you want to install the memory module. Figure 17. Opening the retaining clips of the memory slot 5. T ouch the static-prot ective package that contains the new memory module to any unpainted metal surface on the outside of the server .
1. Remove all media fr om the drives and turn off all attached devices and the server . Then, disconnect all power cor ds from electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connected to the server . 2. Remove the server cover . See “Removing the server cover ” on page 43.
Removing the optical drive Attention: Do not open your server or attempt any repair before r eading and understanding the Safety Information and the Warranty and Support Information on the ThinkServer Documentation DVD that came with your product, and “Guidelines” on page 39 .
6. Remove the optical drive r etainers from both sides of the old optical drive and save them t o use when you install a new optical drive. Figure 21. Removing the optical drive retainers 7.
DANGER Some laser pr oducts contain an embedded Class 3A or Class 3B laser diode. Note the following. Laser r adiation when open. Do not stare into the beam, do not view directly with optical instruments, and avoid direct exposure to the beam. 7. Slide the new optical drive into the drive bay until it snaps into position. Figure 23. Installing the optical drive 8. Connect one end of the signal cable 2 t o the rear of the new optical drive and the other end t o an available SA T A connector (SA T A connector 5 recommended) on the system board.
Removing a hot-swap hard disk drive Attention: Do not open your server or attempt any repair before r eading and understanding the Safety Information and the Warranty and Support Information on the ThinkServer Documentation DVD that came with your product, and “Guidelines” on page 39 .
2. Locat e the hot-swap hard disk drive you want to r emove. Then, pr ess the blue release butt on 1 and rotat e the handle of the har d disk drive br acket to the open position.

2. Locat e a hot-swap hard disk drive bay that you want t o install the drive. Then, press the blue release button 1 and r otate the handle of the hard disk drive br acket to the open position.
3. Gr asp the handle 1 and pull the hard disk drive br acket out of the drive bay . Figure 31. Removing the hot-swap hard disk drive bracket 4. Remove the plastic drive bay ller and save it for future use. Note: The EMI integrity and cooling of the server are pr otected by having all drive bays and PCI card slots cover ed or occupied.
6. Align the screw holes in both sides of the hard disk drive with the corr esponding holes in the hard disk drive br acket. Then, install the four scr ews to secur e the hard disk drive in the br acket. Note: Car efully install the hard disk drive without t ouching the circuit board on the bottom of the hard disk drive.
8. P ress the handle 1 to rotat e it to the closed position until the blue r elease button snaps into place and the bracket with the har d disk drive is securely locked in the drive bay . Figure 34. L ocking the hot-swap hard disk drive in the drive bay 9.
This section pr ovides instructions on how to remove a non-hot-swap hard disk drive. This section applies only to server models that have non-hot-swap hard disk drives installed. Attention: T o maintain proper system cooling, do not oper ate the server for more than 10 minutes without either a drive or a ller panel installed in each drive bay .
3. Locat e the non-hot-swap har d disk drive you want t o remove and disconnect the power cable and the signal cable from the hard disk drive. Then, pull the handle of the hard disk drive br acket to slide the brack et with the har d disk drive out of the drive bay .
• If the non-hot-swap har d disk drive is secur ed in the br acket by scr ews, r emove the four screws and then r emove the har d disk drive fr om the br acket.
1. Remove all media fr om the drives and turn off all attached devices and the server . Then, disconnect all power cor ds from electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connected to the server . 2. P ress the blue button 1 to open the side door .
3. Locat e a non-hot-swap har d disk drive bay that you want to install the drive. Then, pull the handle of the hard disk drive brack et t o slide the br acket out of the drive bay . Figure 40. • If you want t o secur e the har d disk drive in the br acket by scr ews, align the scr ew holes in both sides of the hard disk drive with the corr esponding holes in the brack et. Then, install the four scr ews t o secure the har d disk drive in the br acket.
7. P ush the har d disk drive t o slide the br acket with the hard disk drive into the drive bay until it snaps into position. Figure 43. Sliding the non-hot-swap hard disk drive into the bay 8. Locat e an available ve-wir e power connect or and an available signal cable connector .
Installing a PCI card Attention: Do not open your server or attempt any repair before r eading and understanding the Safety Information and the Warranty and Support Information on the ThinkServer Documentation DVD that came with your product, and “Guidelines” on page 39 .
7. P osition the new PCI car d on the PCI car d slot which you have r emoved the slot bracket in step 5 on page 73. Then, press the PCI card straight down until it is secur ely seat ed into the slot. Install the screw to secur e the PCI car d in place.
2. Remove the server cover . See “Removing the server cover ” on page 43. 3. Lay the server on its side for easier oper ation. 4. Locat e the PCI car d you want to remove. Then, depending on the type of the PCI car d, you might need to disconnect any cables from the PCI card or the system boar d.
This section provides instructions on how to install the E thernet card and how t o install the Ethernet car d driver on Windows oper ating systems. Use any documentation that came with the E thernet card and follow those instructions in addition to the instructions in this section.
5. If you ar e instruct ed t o r eturn the removed E thernet car d t o the manufacturer , follow all packaging instructions and use any packaging materials that ar e supplied to you for shipping. 6. T o complete the removal procedur e, go t o “Completing the parts replacement” on page 122.
5. Locat e the SA T A key connector on the system boar d. See “Locating parts on the system boar d” on page 33. Then, install the RAID 5 k ey int o the SA T A key connector . Figure 46. 1. Remove all media fr om the drives and turn off all attached devices and the server . Then, disconnect all power cor ds from electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connected to the server . 2. Remove the server cover . See “Removing the server cover ” on page 43.
3. Lay the server on its side for easier oper ation. 4. Remove the ThinkServer RAID 500 Adapter . See “Removing the RAID card” on page 88 and follow those instructions to remove the ThinkServer RAID 500 Adapt er . 5. Remove the TR 500 k ey fr om the ThinkServer RAID 500 Adapter .
About the RMM3 The RMM3 is a 1.23-inch x 2.30-inch printed circuit boar d. Figure 50. RMM3 The RMM3 is a kind of add-on card which offers convenient, remot e KVM (k eyboard, video, and mouse) access and control through the LAN or Internet.
4. Locat e the RMM3 connect or on the syst em boar d. See “L ocating parts on the system board” on page 33. 5. Remove the corr esponding PCI car d slot br acket by removing the screw that secures the bracket. Save the PCI card slot bracket in the event that you later r emove the RMM3 and need the br acket to cover the place.
8. Attach the RMM3 t o the slot br acket that came with the option package so that the two scr ew holes in the slot br acket ar e aligned with the corr esponding holes in the RMM3. Then, install the two scr ews that came with the option package to secure the RMM3 t o the slot br acket.
9. Insert the slot bracket with RMM3 into the position for the PCI card slot br acket you have removed. Then, secur e the slot br acket with RMM3 in place by installing the screw that you have r emoved in step 5 on page 83. Figure 53. Installing the slot bracket with RMM3 Chapter 5 .
10. Remove the ribbon cable fr om the option package. Connect one end of the ribbon cable t o the RMM3 connector on the syst em board. See “L ocating parts on the system board” on page 33. Then, connect the other end of the ribbon cable to the connector on the RMM3.
T o remove the RMM3, do the following: 1. Remove all media fr om the drives and turn off all attached devices and the server . Then, disconnect all power cords fr om electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connect ed t o the server . Wait three t o ve minutes to let the server cool befor e removing the server cover .
7. T o complete the removal procedur e, go t o “Completing the parts replacement” on page 122. Installing, removing, or replacing hardwar e devices This section provides instructions on how t o install, remove, or replace har dware devices for your server .
Installing the RAID card This section pr ovides instructions on the following: • “Installing the ThinkServer RAID 500 Adapt er ” on page 89 • “Installing the ThinkServer 8708EM2 RAID Adapter” on page 90 Note: This section only applies to server models with hot-swap har d disk drives.
9. Connect the mini SAS signal cables (port 0 t o port 3) to the corr esponding SA T A/SAS signal connect ors (connector 0 to connector 3) on the hot-swap har d disk drive backplanes. See “Locating connectors on the hot-swap har d disk drive backplanes” on page 37.
1. Remove all media fr om the drives and turn off all attached devices and the server . Then, disconnect all power cor ds from electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connected to the server . 2. Remove the server cover . See “Removing the server cover ” on page 43.

1. Note the t op view and bottom view of the battery car d assembly . Then, insert the batt ery pack harness connector into the J4 batt ery pack harness connect or on the backside of the battery card assembly . F or more information, r efer t o the following illustrations.
3. Hold the battery card assembly with the batt ery side up and the J5 board-t o-board connector lining up with the J10 BBU connector 1 on the RAID car d. Car efully press the batt ery car d assembly onto the RAID card so that the two connectors are rmly joined.

T o remove the heat sink and fan assembly, do the following: 1. Remove all media fr om the drives and turn off all attached devices and the server . Then, disconnect all power cor ds from electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connected to the server .
• If you have installed a second micr oprocessor and you ar e r emoving the heat sink and fan assembly for micr oprocessor 2, disconnect the heat sink and fan assembly cable from the syst em fan 1 connector on the system board. See “L ocating parts on the system boar d” on page 33.
8. T o install the heat sink and fan assembly, see “Installing the heat sink and fan assembly” on page 99. Installing the heat sink and fan assembly Attention: Do not open your server or attempt a.
4. T ouch the static-prot ective package that contains the heat sink and fan assembly to any unpainted surface on the outside of the server . Then, remove the heat sink and fan assembly fr om the package. Note: When handling the heat sink and fan assembly, do not t ouch the thermal gr ease 1 on the bottom of it.
5. Place the heat sink and fan assembly on the syst em board so that the four screws on the heat sink and fan assembly ar e aligned with the corr esponding mounting studs on the syst em board.
This section pr ovides instructions on how to r emove a fr ont fan. DANGER Hazardous moving parts. K eep ngers and other body parts away . T o remove a front fan, do the following: 1. Remove all media fr om the drives and turn off all attached devices and the server .
6. The fr ont fan is attached t o the chassis by four rubber mounts 1 . Remove the front fan by cutting the rubber mounts and gently pulling the fr ont fan out of the chassis.

Remove all media fr om the drives and turn off all attached devices and the server . Then, disconnect all power cor ds from electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connected to the server .
4. Install the front fan by aligning the four rubber mounts with the corresponding holes in the chassis, and then push the rubber mounts through the holes.

5. The r ear fan is attached t o the chassis by four rubber mounts. Remove the rear fan by cutting the rubber mounts and gently pulling the rear fan out of the chassis.
