Read this rst Be sur e to follow the important tips given her e to continue to get the most use and enjoyment out of your computer . F ailure to do so might lead t o discomfort or injury, or cause your computer to fail. When your computer is turned on or the batt ery is charging, the base, the palm rest, and some other parts may become hot.
Protect your computer and data when moving it. Before moving a comput er equipped with a hard disk drive, do one of the following, and make sure that the power switch is off or is blinking: • T urn it off. • P ress Fn+F4 t o put it in sleep (standby) mode • P ress Fn+F12 t o put it in hibernation mode.
Conditions that requir e immediate action Products can become damaged due to misuse or neglect. Some pr oduct damage is serious enough that the pr oduct should not be used again until it has been inspected and, if necessary, repaired by an authoriz ed servicer .
Replaceable Units, or CRUs. L enovo provides documentation with instructions when it is appr opriate for customers to install options or replace CRUs. Y ou must closely follow all instructions when installing or replacing parts. The Off state of a power indicator does not necessarily mean that voltage levels inside a product are zer o.
P ower cords and power adapters DANGER Use only the power cords and power adapters supplied by the product manufacturer . The power cords shall be safety approved. F or Germany, it shall be H05VV -F , 3G, 0.75 mm 2 , or better . F or other countries, the suitable types shall be used accordingly .
Plugs and outlets DANGER If a r eceptacle (power outlet) that you intend to use with your computer equipment appears to be damaged or corroded, do not use the outlet until it is replaced by a qualied electrician. Do not bend or modify the plug. If the plug is damaged, contact the manufacturer to obtain a replacement.
Batteries DANGER P ersonal computers manufactured by Lenovo contain a coin cell battery t o provide power to the system clock. In addition, many mobile pr oducts, such as notebook computers, utilize a rechargeable battery pack to provide system power when in portable mode.
Rechargeable battery notice DANGER Do not attempt to disassemble or modify the battery pack. A ttempting to do so can cause an explosion, or liquid leakage from the battery pack. A battery pack other than the one specied by Lenovo, or a disassembled or modied battery pack is not covered by the warranty .
Heat and product ventilation DANGER Computers, ac power adapters, and many accessories can generate heat when turned on and when batteries ar e charging.
Electrical current safety information DANGER Electric current from power , telephone, and communication cables is hazardous. T o avoid a shock hazard: • Do not use your computer during a lightning storm.
Modem safety information DANGER F or North America T ype: CA UTION: T o reduce the risk of re, use only No. 26 A WG or larger (for example, No. 24 AWG) telecommunication line cord listed by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) or certied by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA).
Using headphones or earphones If your computer has both a headphone connector and an audio-out connector , always use the headphone connector for headphones (also called a headset) or earphones. CA UTION: Excessive sound pressure from earphones and headphones can cause hearing loss.

• Y our computer may look slightly differ ent from the illustr ations. • Y our computer is compatible with USB 1.1 and 2.0. Some models are also compatible with USB 3.0. • If your comput er is a USB 3.0 model, any function specic to USB 3.0 will not work until your Windows operating system has been started.

4 F an louvers (rear) The int ernal fan and louvers enable air to cir culate in the computer and cool the centr al processor . Note: T o avoid impeding airow , do not place any obstacle in front of the fan.
Status indicators Y our comput er has system-status indicat ors and power -status indicators. The status indicat ors show the current status of your computer . System-status indicators 1 Device Access A hard disk drive or an optional drive, such as a drive in the Ultr abay, is being used to r ead or write data.
P ower-status indicators 1 Sleep (standby in Windows XP) status • Green : The computer is in sleep (standby) mode. • Blinking green : The computer is ent ering sleep (standby) or hibernation mode, or is r esuming normal operation. 2 Battery status • Green : The battery has more than 20% charge.

Locating important product information This section provides information to help you locate your machine type and model label, FCC ID and IC Certication label, and Windows Certicate of Authenticity . Machine type and model label The machine type and model label identies your comput er .
FCC ID and IC Certication number label There is no FCC ID or IC Certication number for the PCI Express Mini Car d shown on the enclosure of your computer . The FCC ID and IC Certication number label is afxed on the card installed in the PCI Express Mini Card slot of your computer .
Certicate of Authenticity label The Micr osoft ® Certicate of Authenticity label for the pr einstalled oper ating system is attached. Print ed on this label ar e the product ID and the pr oduct key information for your comput er . Record this information and keep it in a safe place.

The Lenovo Solution Center progr am enables you to troubleshoot and resolve computer pr oblems. It combines diagnostic t ests, system information collection, security status, and support information, along with hints and tips for maximum system performance.
P assword Manager The P assword Manager program enables users to manage and remember all their sensitive and easy-to-for get application and W eb site login information, such as user IDs, passwords, and other personal information.
SimpleT ap The SimpleT ap pr ogram pr ovides you with a quick way to customiz e some basic comput er settings such as muting the speakers, adjusting the volume, locking the computer operating system, launching a progr am, opening a W eb page, opening a le, and so on.
Chapter 2. Using your comput er Y our computer is powerful and is loaded with featur es and applications. Use it to accomplish anything, any day, any time.

Note: If you have logged on with an administrat or user ID in Windows XP , and you press Fn+F3, the panel for selecting a power scheme appears. If you have logged on with another user ID in Windows XP , and you press Fn+F3, the panel does not appear .

The purpose of this method is to change the brightness level tempor arily . On Windows Vista, the default brightness level is loaded aft er sleep (standby), hibernation, reboot, or detaching or attaching an ac power adapter .
Setting the volume Each device has volume contr ols, which you can set. T o open the window for adjusting the output volume or the r ecording volume, do the following: F or Windows 7 and Windows Vista: 1. Click Start ➙ Control P anel ➙ Har dware and Sound ➙ Sound .
Windows key and Application key The following two keys ar e on your comput er k eyboard: 1 Windows key If you pr ess this key, the Start menu of Windows is displayed or hidden. If you press this key and another key at the same time, the System P roperties window or the Computer (in Windows XP , My Comput er) window is displayed.
Using the UltraNav pointing device Y our comput er may come with the UltraNav pointing device. The Ultr aNav consists of the T rackP oint and the touch pad, each of which is itself a pointing device with both basic and ext ended functions.
Using the T r ackPoint pointing device The T rackP oint pointing device consists of a pointing stick (1) on the k eyboard and thr ee click butt ons at the bottom of the keyboar d.
3. Click the UltraNav tab. Under T rackP oint, pr oceed to changing the settings. F or details, refer to the Help in the Utility . Changing the cap The cap (1) on the end of the T r ackP oint pointing stick is removable. Y ou can r eplace it as shown in the drawing.
F or details, r efer to the Help in the Ultr aNav . Customizing the touch pad T o customize the touch pad, do as follows: 1. P ress Fn+F8. A panel for Ultr aNav Device Settings pops up. 2. Click Manage Settings t o open the Mouse properties window . 3.

P ower management When you need to use your computer away fr om electrical outlets, you depend on battery power to keep your computer running. Different computer components consume power at differ ent rat es. The more you use the power -intensive components, the fast er you consume battery power .
Before you charge the batt er y, make sur e that its t emperatur e is at least 10°C (50°F). Charging the battery When you check battery status and nd that the per centage of power remaining is low or when the power alarm alerts you that remaining power is low , you need to char ge your battery or replace it with a charged battery .
Notes: Y ou can also turn off the computer display as follows: 1. P ress Fn+F3. A panel for selecting a power plan (in Windows XP , power scheme) appears. 2. Select Fn+F3 Settings . 3. Select P ower off display . 4. Click OK . The ne xt time you press Fn+F3, you can turn off the computer display .
3. F or Low battery alarm or Critically low battery alarm , set the percentage of the power level and set the action. Note: If your computer enters sleep (standby) or hibernation mode when the battery is low, but the alarm message has not yet appeared, the message will appear when the comput er resumes.
DANGER Do not put the batt er y pack in trash that is disposed of in landlls. When disposing of the battery, comply with local ordinances or regulations and your company's safety standar ds. DANGER There is a danger of an e xplosion if the backup battery is incorrectly placed.
Connecting to the network Y our computer has one or more network adapt ers for connecting to the Internet and t o your company's wired LAN or wir eless LAN network. Note: Some models come with a built-in wir eless W AN card enabling you to establish wireless connections over remote public or private networks.
Making wireless LAN connections Y our comput er comes with a built-in wir eless networking card and a congur ation utility t o help you make wireless connections and monitor the status of your conn.

Pr esentations and multimedia Y our comput er comes with many featur es to increase the enjoyment of your comput er and help you give presentations with condence. Changing display settings Y ou can change the display settings, such as font siz e or color mode or numeric lock.
1. Right-click on the desktop, and click Personaliz e . 2. Click Display Settings . 3. Click Advanced Settings , select the On Screen Display tab, and then click Num Lock Settings . 4. The setting window opens. 5. F ollow the instructions on the screen.
3. If this is the rst time the external monitor has been connected, the New Display Det ected dialog bo x opens. Select one of the following, and then click OK .

Y ou can cr eate a pr esentation scheme by following the instructions of the Pr esentation Director , with the project or attached t o your computer . Y ou can save the scheme for a future pr esentation with the same equipment. Playing sound Y our project or might have one or more audio-input connectors.
Note: T o change the color settings, right-click on the deskt op, and click Screen resolution . Click Advanced Settings , select the Monitor tab, then set Colors . F or Windows Vista: 1. Connect the ext ernal monitor to the monitor connector; then connect the monitor to an electrical outlet.
Note: T o use the DisplayP ort feature or DVI monit or on the docking station, you need to switch to High P erformance Gr aphics. Switching the Gr aphics P rocessing Unit If your computer supports NVIDIA Optimus Graphics, the Gr aphics Pr ocessing Unit is switched automatically depending on the settings of the power plan you use.

Conguring camer a settings Y ou can congure the camer a settings t o meet your needs, such as adjusting the quality of the video output. T o congure the camera settings, do the following: 1. P ress Fn+F6. The Communications settings window opens.

• Problem : When you connect a headphone to your computer while playing sound, a speaker does not produce sound in the MUL TI-S TREAM mode at SmartAudio (Windows 7). Solution : Once the headphone is attached, the str eaming is automatically r edirected to it.
