Chapter 2. Safety information This chapter contains the safety information that you need to be familiar with before servicing a computer . General safety F ollow these rules to ensur e general safety: • Observe good housekeeping in the area of the machines during and after maintenance.
Observe the following rules when working on electrical equipment. Important: Use only appr oved t ools and test equipment. Some hand tools have handles covered with a soft material that does not insulat e you when working with live electrical currents.

Be extremely careful during write operations such as copying, saving, or formatting. Data or progr ams can be overwritten if you select an incorr ect drive.

Chapter 5. Using the Setup Utility The Setup Utility pr ogram is used t o view and change the congur ation settings of your computer , regar dless of which operating system you are using. However , the oper ating-system settings might override any similar settings in the Setup Utility pr ogram.
Administrator P assword Setting an Administr ator Passwor d det ers unauthoriz ed persons fr om changing conguration settings. Y ou might want to set an Administrat or P assword if you are responsible for maintaining the settings of sever al computers.
T o set a P ower -On P assword, do the following: 1. Start the L enovo BIOS Setup Utility pr ogram (See ”Starting the L enovo BIOS Setup Utility pr ogram” on page 13.) 2. F rom the Security menu, select Set Power -On P assword and pr ess the Enter key .

Replacing the k eyboard and mouse Attention: T urn off the computer and wait 3 to 5 minutes to let it cool down before r emoving the cover . T o replace the keyboard and mouse Step 1. Remove any media (disks, CDs, DVDs or memory cards) from the drives, shut down the oper ating system, and turn off the computer and all attached devices.
Step 3. Disconnect the failing power cor d and adapter fr om the computer . Step 4. Connect the new power cord t o the same connector as shown. Removing the computer cover Attention: T urn off the computer and wait 3 to 5 minutes to let it cool down before r emoving the cover .

Step 5. Push then slide the har d disk drive and br acket upwar d and out of the chassis as shown. 1 2 1 2 Step 6. Push the pins and release the hard disk drive fr om the br acket. Step 7. Install the new hard disk drive as follows: a. Line up the new hard disk drive with the bracket and secure it with the pins.
Step 4. Remove the rear cover . Refer to “Removing the r ear cover” . Step 5. Push down the pin that locks the optical disk drive to the chassis then use the screwdriver push the disk out. 1 2 2 1 Step 6. Push a small iron stick (paper clip) into the small hole on the optical drive cover so that the disk springs out as shown.
Step 9. Separat e the cover fr om the defective optical drive. Step 10. Install the new optical drive as follows: a. Align the new optical drive with the cover , and then push the cover back into position. b. Scr ew the metal bracket back onto the new optical drive.
Step 9. Push up the middle cover upward with two hands to r emove it from pins. 3 1 2 2 3 Step 10. Slide the middle cover out as shown. 4 (F rom left to right) 4 Step 11. T o reattach the middle cover: a. Line up the middle cover with chassis, slide it back in position.
Replacing the converter board Note: T urn off the comput er and wait 3 to 5 minutes to let it cool down before r emoving the cover . Note: It may be helpful t o place the comput er face-down on a soft at surface for this procedur e.
Step 10. Lift up the converter board to r emove it. 3 3 Step 11. T o install the new converter board: a. Line up the new converter board with the mounting holes and pin, and then, secure converter board with screw and pins. b. Connect the 2 cables to the new converter boar d.
Step 6. Remove the optical drive. Refer to “Replacing the optical drive” . Step 7. Remove the middle cover . Refer t o “Removing the middle cover” . Step 8. Remove the screws that secure the EMI cover t o the chassis. Step 9. Lift up the EMI cover up to remove it.
Step 8. Remove the 2 screws that secure the camer a to the front bezel. Step 9. Disconnect the data cable fr om the camera. Step 10. T o install the new camer a: a. Connect the data cable t o the new camer a. b. Line up the new camera holes with the mounting holes on the fr ont bezel and secur e it with the 2 scr ews.
Step 3. Disconnect all cables attached to the computer . This includes power cor ds, input/output (I/O) cables, and any other cables that are connect ed t o the comput er . Refer t o “L eft and right view” and “Rear view” for help with locating the various connectors.

Step 8. Remove the EMI cover . Refer to “Removing the EMI cover” . Step 9. Remove the 4 screws that secure the system fan to the heat-sink and lift the system fan up to remove it. Step 10. Separate the defective fan fr om the good one as shown. Step 11.

Step 11. Remove the 8 scr ews that secur e the heat-sink t o the motherboar d, and detach the cables attached t o the heat-sink, then lift up the heat-sink t o remove it. Step 12. T o install the new heat-sink: a. Line up the new heat-sink with mounting holes on motherboard and secure it with the 8 screws.
Step 11. Lift the small handle and open the r etainer . Attention: Do not touch the gold contacts on the bottom of the micr oprocessor . When handing the micropr ocessor , touch only the sides. Step 12. Lift the micropr ocessor str aight up and out of the socket.
Important: T o avoid damaging the micr oprocessor contacts, keep the micr oprocessor completely level while installing it into the socket. Step 15. Lower the micropr ocessor str aight down into its socket on the motherboard.
Step 10. Lift up the rear I/O module. Step 11. Disconnect the TV antenna cable from the rear I/O module by removing the 2 scr ews. Step 12. Remove the 2 scr ews that secure the r ear I/O module to the metal bracket. 1 2 1 2 Step 13. Lift the rear I/O module up from connect ors on the motherboard then slide it out.
Step 2. Unplug all power cor ds from electrical outlets. Step 3. Disconnect all cables attached to the computer . This includes power cor ds, input/output (I/O) cables, and any other cables that are connect ed t o the comput er . Refer t o “L eft and right view” and “Rear view” for help with locating the various connectors.
Step 6. Remove the optical drive. Refer to “Replacing the optical drive” . Step 7. Remove the middle cover . Refer t o “Removing the middle cover” . Step 8. Remove the EMI cover . Refer to “Removing the EMI cover” . Step 9. Remove the screw that secur es the TV - T uner card t o the motherboard.
Step 10. Detach the speaker system fr om the rubber scr ews. Step 11. T o install the new speaker system: a. Secur e the new speaker system to the chassis with the rubber screws. b. Connect the new speaker cable to motherboard. Step 12. Reattach the EMI cover , middle cover , optical drive, comput er stand and the r ear cover .
Step 11. Lift up the t ouch control boar d to r emove it. 1 2 2 2 1 1 Step 12. T o install the new touch contr ol boar d: a. Line up the holes on the new touch control board with the mounting holes on the middle fr ame and secure it with the 2 screws.
Step 11. Remove the 4 scr ews that secur e the scalar boar d to the motherboard and chassis, then lift it up t o r emove it. 1 2 2 2 2 1 1 Step 12. T o install the new scalar boar d: a. Line up the holes on the new scalar boar d with the mounting holes and secure it with 4 screws.
Step 17. Remove the TV tuner car d. Refer to “Replacing the TV tuner card” . Step 18. Remove all the cables connect ed to the motherboard. Step 19. Remove the 4 screws that secure the motherboard to the chassis and slide it out as shown. Step 20. T o install the new motherboar d: a.

Step 24. Remove the Wi-Fi ant enna from the fr ont bez el. Step 25. Detach the power board cable, front function board cable, front indicator boar d cable and LED cable fr om the chassis. Step 26. Push the pins out t o r elease the chassis and lift the chassis up and set it aside.
Replacing the power switch board Note: T urn off the comput er and wait 3 to 5 minutes to let it cool down before r emoving the cover . T o replace the power switch boar d Step 1. Remove any media (disks, CDs, DVDs, or memory cards) fr om the drives, shut down the oper ating system, and turn off the computer and all attached devices.
Step 27. Disconnect the cable from the power switch board. Step 28. T o install the new the power switch boar d: a. Connect the power switch cable to the power switch board. b. Insert the power switch board, snap it in position and secur e it with the pins.
