Chapter 1. Important safety information CAUTION: Before using this manual, it is important that you read and understand all the related safety information for this product. Refer to the ThinkCentre Safety and Warranty Guide that you received with this product for the latest safety information.

Chapter 2. Overview This guide provides information about installing and or r eplacing Customer Replaceable Units (CRUs). However , this guide does not include procedures for all parts. It is expected that cables, switches, and certain mechanical parts be replaced by trained service personnel without the need for step-by-step procedur es.
Handling static-sensitive devices Do not open the static-protective package containing the new part until the defective part has been removed fr om the computer and you are r eady to install the new part. Static electricity , although harmless to you, can seriously damage computer components and parts.
Locations This section provides illustrations to help locate the various connectors, contr ols, and components of the computer . Locating controls and connectors on the front of your computer Figure 1 shows the location of the contr ols and connectors on the front of your computer .
Locating connectors on the rear of your computer Figure 2 shows the location of connectors on the r ear of your computer . Some connectors on the rear of your computer ar e color-coded to help you determine where to connect the cables on your computer .
Connector Description USB connector Used to attach a device that requir es a Universal Serial Bus (USB) connector , such as a USB keyboard, a USB mouse, a USB scanner , or a USB printer . If you have mor e than eight USB devices, you can purchase a USB hub, which you can use to connect additional USB devices.
Locating components To open the computer cover , see “Opening the cover” on page 11 . This section shows the location of the various components in your computer .
Identifying parts on the system board The system board (sometimes called the planar or motherboar d) is the main circuit board in your computer . It provides basic computer functions and supports a variety of devices. Figure 4 shows the location of parts on the system boar d.

Chapter 3. Installing options and replacing hardware This chapter provides an intr oduction to the features and options that ar e available for your computer . Yo u can expand the capabilities of your computer by adding or replacing memory , adapter car ds, and drives.
5. Car efully lift and position the computer upside down as shown in 6. 6. Pivot the cover -release button 1 on the r ear of the computer and then raise the cover as shown. Installing internal options Important Read “Handling static-sensitive devices” on page 4 before opening the computer cover .
3. Insert the notched end 2 of the memory module into the socket 1 . Pr ess the memory module firmly , and pivot the memory module until it snaps into place. Make sure that the memory module is firmly fixed in the slot and does not move easily .
4. Install the new battery . 5. Reconnect all the cables to the system boar d and close the computer cover . See Chapter 4, “Completing the parts replacement,” on page 31. Note: When the computer is turned on for the first time after battery replacement, an err or message might be displayed.
2. Remove the fr ont bezel by releasing the two tabs and pivoting the bezel forward to r emove completely . 3. Disconnect the fr ont audio and USB assembly cables from the system boar d.
8. To r einstall the front bezel, align the plastic tabs on the bottom of the bezel with the corresponding holes in the chassis, then pivot the bezel inwar d until it snaps into position. 9. Go to Chapter 4, “Completing the parts r eplacement,” on page 31.

5. Lift the micr oprocessor straight up and out of the socket. Notes: a. Note the orientation of the notches 1 on the micr oprocessor . This is important when reinstalling the micr oprocessor on the system boar d. b. Do not dr op anything onto the micropr ocessor socket while it is exposed.
10. To secur e the micropr ocessor in the socket, close the micropr ocessor retainer and lock it into position with the small handle. 11 . Install the heat sink on the system board. See “Replacing the heat sink” on page 16. 12. Go to Chapter 4, “Completing the parts r eplacement,” on page 31.
8. Install the two short r ubber mounts in the new system fan assembly as shown in Figure 16. 9. Install the two long r ubber mounts into the rear of the chassis. Push the mounts through the holes of the chassis. If necessary , pull the mounts thr ough the holes from inside the chassis.

7. To install the new har d disk drive into the plastic bracket, flex the bracket and align pin 1 , pin 2 , pin 3 , and pin 4 on the bracket with the holes in the hard disk drive. Do not touch the cir cuit board 5 on the bottom of the hard disk drive.
2. Remove the fr ont bezel by releasing the two tabs and pivoting the bezel forward to r emove completely . 3. Disconnect the signal and power cables fr om the rear of the optical drive. 4. Pr ess the optical drive lock button to remove the optical drive out the fr ont of the computer .
6. Slide the new optical drive into the drive bay until it snaps into position. 7. Connect the signal and power cables to the drive. 8. To r einstall the front bezel, align the plastic tabs on the bottom of the bezel with the corresponding holes in the chassis, then pivot the bezel inwar d until it snaps into position.
4. Insert the notched end 2 of the new memory module into the socket 1 . Press the memory module firmly , and pivot the memory module until it snaps into place. Make sure that the memory module is firmly fixed in the slot and does not move easily .
3. Pr ess inward on the two side tabs and then pivot the system boar d to release it from the chassis. 4. Place the system boar d on a clean and flat surface. 5. Locate the adapter car d slot. See “Identifying parts on the system board” on page 9.

Chapter 4. Completing the parts replacement After completing all parts replacements, you need to close the cover and r econnect cables, such as power cords. Depending on the parts r eplaced, you might need to confirm the updated information in the Setup Utility program.
3. Close the computer cover and then pivot the cover -release button on the r ear of the computer to the locked position. 4. If a cover lock is installed, lock the cover . 5. Reconnect the external cables and power cor ds to the computer . See “Locating connectors on the rear of your computer” on page 6.
Chapter 5. Security features To help prevent har dware theft and unauthorized access to your computer , several security lock options are available. In addition to a physical lock, unauthorized use of your computer can be prevented by a softwar e lock that locks the keyboard until a correct passwor d is typed in.
Erasing a lost or forgotten password (clearing CMOS) This section contains instructions on erasing some lost or for gotten passwords, such as a user password. For mor e information about lost or forgotten passwor ds, go to the ThinkV antage ® Productivity Center program.
