Chapter 1. About this manual This manual contains service and refer ence information for ThinkCentre ® computers listed on the cover . It is intended only for trained servicers who are familiar with Lenovo ® computer products. Before servicing a Lenovo pr oduct, be sure to read the Safety Information.

Chapter 2. Safety information This chapter contains the safety information that you need to be familiar with before servicing a computer . General safety Follow these rules to ensur e general safety: v Observe good housekeeping in the area of the machines during and after maintenance.
CAUTION: Electrical current from power , telephone, and communication cables can be hazardous. To avoid personal injury or equipment damage, disconnect the attached power cords, telecommunication systems, networks, and modems before you open the server/workstation covers, unless instructed otherwise in the installation and configuration procedures.
v Always look carefully for possible hazar ds in your work area. Examples of these hazards ar e moist floors, nongrounded power extension cables, power surges, and missing safety grounds. v Do not touch live electrical circuits with the r eflective surface of a plastic dental mirror .
5. Check for any obvious alterations. Use good judgment as to the safety of any alterations. 6. Check inside the unit for any obvious unsafe conditions, such as metal filings, contamination, water or other liquids, or signs of fire or smoke damage. 7.

CAUTION: When replacing the lithium battery , use only Part Number 33F8354 or an equivalent type battery recommended by the manufacturer . If your system has a module containing a lithium battery , replace it only with the same module type made by the same manufacturer .
CAUTION: The power control button on the device and the power switch on the power supply do not turn off the electrical current supplied to the device. The device also might have more than one power cord. To remove all electrical current from the device, ensure that all power cords are disconnected from the power source.

Chapter 4. General Checkout Attention The drives in the computer you are servicing might have been r earranged or the drive startup sequence changed. Be extremely car eful during write operations such as copying, saving, or formatting. Data or programs can be overwritten if you select an incorrect drive.

Chapter 5. Diagnostics using PC-Doctor for DOS Diagnostics are pr ovided by the PC-Doctor program for DOS. These include a full range of diagnostic utilities to determine the operating condition of the computer ’s hardwar e components.
Starting PC-Doctor from a diagnostic diskette or CD-ROM Note: If your computer has no internal diskette drive, an external USB diskette drive is requir ed when using the diagnostic diskette. 1. If your computer is already on when you start this pr ocedure, shut down the operating system and turn off the computer .
T est selection To select one or more tests, use the following procedur e. 1. Open the corresponding test category . 2. Using the cursor movement keys, highlight the desired test. 3. Press the space bar . A selected test is marked by >> . Pressing the space bar again de-selects a test and removes the >>.

Chapter 6. Using the Setup Utility The Setup Utility program is stor ed in the electrically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM) of the computer . The Setup Utility program is used to view and change the configuration settings of the computer , regar dless of which operating system you are using.
Password considerations If you are setting any of the various types of passwor ds on your computer , you should read and understand the following information: v If you type an incorrect passwor d, you will see an error message. If you type an incorrect passwor d three consecutive times, you must turn the computer off and start again.
Attention Make sure that the IDE Drive Master passwor d is stored in a safe place. If both the IDE Drive User password and the IDE Drive Master passwor d are lost or forgotten, the IDE har d disk drive must be replaced.
Selecting a startup device If the computer does not start up (boot) from a device such as the CD-ROM, diskette, or hard disk as expected, use one of the following pr ocedures to select a startup device. Selecting a temporary startup device Use this procedur e to startup from any boot device.
Chapter 7. Symptom-to-FRU Index The Symptom-to-FRU index lists error symptoms and possible causes. The most likely cause is listed first. Always begin with Chapter 4, “General Checkout,” on page 43. This index can also be used to help you decide which FRUs to have available when servicing a computer .

Chapter 8. Replacing FRUs Important Before you r eplace any FRU, read Chapter 2, “Safety information,” on page 5. These precautions and guidelines will help you work safely . FRU replacements ar e to be done by trained service technicians only . This chapter does not contain a remove and r eplace procedure for all FRUs.
Locating the connectors on the rear The following illustration shows the locations of the connectors on the rear of the computer . 1 PCI adapter slot 8 Ethernet connector 2 Integrate.

4. Make sure the notch 1 on the new memory module is aligned corr ectly with the connector key 2 on the socket. Insert the memory module straight down into the connector until it snaps into position and the retaining clips ar e closed. 5. Go to “Completing the FRU replacement.
4. Remove the PCI riser from the computer by pulling straight up on the blue handle provided. 5. Pivot the blue adapter latch upward and r emove the failing adapter . 6. Remove the new adapter from its static-pr otective package. 7. Install the new adapter into the PCI connector in the riser .
2. Pivot the drive bay assembly upward to gain access to the system boar d. 3. Locate the rear fan bracket assembly . See “Locating components” on page 91. 4. Lift the rear fan bracket assembly up to gain access to the battery . 5. Remove the old battery .
Removing and replacing the power supply Attention Never remove the cover on a power supply or any part that has the following label attached. Hazardous voltage, curr ent, and energy levels are pr esent inside any component that has this label attached.
7. Install the new power supply and insert the four screws that hold the power supply in place. 8. Replace the PCI riser . See “Removing and replacing a PCI adapter” on page 93. 9. Reconnect all power supply cables to the system board and the drives.
7. Remove the heat sink from the micr oprocessor by gently twisting the heat sink to break the seal formed by the thermal gr ease and lifting it straight up. 8. Place the heat sink on its side on a clean work surface so that the thermal grease is not contaminated.
10. To remove the micropr ocessor 1 from the failing system board, lift the small handle 2 on the micropr ocessor socket to its maximum vertical position.

7. Position the micropr ocessor so that the pins are aligned with the socket and with the beveled corner 1 on the micropr ocessor is aligned in the socket as shown. 8. Lower the handle until it is fully in the down position and locked into the socket.
Removing and replacing an optical drive 1. Open the cover . See “Opening the cover” on page 90. 2. Push the optical drive eject button and slide the optical drive out of the front of the computer . 3. Slide the new drive into the bay until it is latched into position.
Removing and replacing a hard disk drive 1. Open the cover . See “Opening the cover” on page 90. 2. Pivot the drive bay assembly upward to gain access to the har d disk drive. 3. Disconnect the signal and power cables from the r ear of the hard disk drive.
10. Go to “Completing the FRU replacement..” Completing the FRU replacement. After replacing FRUs, you need to install any r emoved parts, replace the cover , and reconnect any cables, including telephone lines and power cor ds.
Chapter 9. FRU lists Note: A CRU (Customer Replaceable Unit) is identified by a single asterisk (*) or two asterisks (**) in the CRU ID column. An N in the CRU ID Column means that the part is not a CRU. A single asterisk (*) means that the part is a T ier 1 CRU; two asterisks (**) mean that the part is a T ier 2 CRU.
