Chapter 1. Important safety information CAUTION: Before using this manual, it is important that you read and understand all the related safety information for this product. Refer to the ThinkCentre Safety and Warranty Guide that you received with this product for the latest safety information.

Chapter 2. Features and specifications This chapter provides an intr oduction to your computer features and specifications. Features This section provides an overview of the computer featur es and preinstalled software. System information The following information covers a variety of models.

Preinstalled software Y our computer might come with preinstalled softwar e. If it does, an operating system, device drivers to support built-in features, and other support pr ograms are included. Chapter 3. Software overview The computer is manufactured with a pr eloaded operating system, W indows V ista, and several preloaded applications. Software provided with your Windows operating system This section describes the W indows applications included with this product.
PC Doctor for Windows, PC Doctor for Windows PE The diagnostic programs ar e preinstalled from the factory on your har d disk drive. Tw o diagnostic programs ar e available to assist you in diagnosing hardware problems.
Chapter 4. Using the Setup Utility The Setup Utility program is used to view and change the configuration settings of your computer , regardless of which operating system you ar e using. However , the operating-system settings might override any similar settings in the Setup Utility program.
Password considerations A password can be any combination of up to 16 characters (A-Z, a-z and 0-9). For security reasons, it is a good idea to use a str ong password that cannot be easily compromised.
To enable or disable a device, do the following: 1. Start the Setup Utility program. See “Starting the Setup Utility program” on page 9. 2. From the Setup Utility program menu, select Device . 3. Select Floppy Drive Setup or ATA Drives Setup . 4. Select the desired devices and settings and press Enter .
Advanced settings On some computer models, the Advanced menu includes a setting to enable or disable HyperThreading. This featur e works only with HyperThreading-aware operating systems, such as W indows V ista and W indows XP . The default setting for HyperThreading is Enabled .
Chapter 5. Updating system programs This chapter contains information about updating POST/BIOS and how to recover from a POST/BIOS update failur e. Using system programs System programs ar e the basic layer of software built into your computer .

Chapter 6. T roubleshooting and diagnostics This chapter describes some basic troubleshooting and diagnostic pr ograms. If your computer problem is not described her e, see Chapter 8, “Getting information, help, and service,” on page 31 for additional troubleshooting r esources.
Symptom Action The keyboard does not work. The computer does not respond to the keyboard. V erify that: v The computer is turned on. v The monitor is turned on and the brightness and contrast controls are set correctly . v The keyboard is securely connected to the keyboar d connector on the computer .

Running diagnostics from the Rescue and Recovery workspace Yo u can run the PC-Doctor for W indows PE diagnostic program from the Rescue and Recovery workspace. To run diagnostics from the Rescue and Recovery workspace, use the following procedur e: 1.
Non-optical mouse The non-optical mouse uses a ball to navigate the pointer . If the pointer on the screen does not move smoothly with the mouse, you might need to clean the mouse. To clean the non-optical mouse: Note: The following illustration might be slightly dif ferent from your mouse.

Chapter 7. Recovering software This chapter will help you become familiar with recovery solutions pr ovided by Lenovo. This chapter explains when and how to use the following recovery methods: v Creat.
v W indows V ista: Use Product Recovery discs to r estore your computer to the original factory contents only . When using Product Recovery discs on W indows XP , you ar e given the option to enter the Rescue and Recovery workspace and choose from a variety of r ecovery operations.
v On a second hard disk drive installed in your computer v On an externally attached USB hard disk drive v On a network drive v On recordable disc (a r ecordable CD or DVD drive is requir ed for this .
the Rescue and Recovery workspace operates independently from the W indows operating system, you can restor e the factory contents even if you cannot start the W indows operating system.
To create rescue media, do the following: 1. Click Start → All Programs → ThinkV antage → Create Recovery Media . 2. In the Rescue Media area, select the type of rescue media you want to cr eate. Yo u can create r escue media using a disc, a USB hard disk drive, or a second internal hard disk drive.
2. Insert the Recovery Repair diskette into diskette drive. 3. T urn on the computer and follow the instructions on the screen. Note: If the r epair operation finishes without error , you will be able to access the Rescue and Recovery workspace by repeatedly pr essing the F1 1 key while you restart your computer .
Setting a rescue device in the startup sequence Before you start the Rescue and Recovery pr ogram from a disc, USB hard disk drive, or any external device, you must first change the startup sequence in the Setup Utility . To view or change the startup sequence, do the following: 1.
