Chapter 1. About this manual This manual contains service and r eference information for ThinkCentre ® computer machine types listed on the front cover . This manual is intended only for trained Service P roviders who are familiar with Lenovo ® computer pr oducts.

Chapter 2. Safety information This chapt er contains the safety information that you need to be familiar with befor e servicing a comput er . General safety F ollow these rules to ensure gener al safety: • Observe good housekeeping in the ar ea of the machines during and after maintenance.
Important: Use only appr oved t ools and test equipment. Some hand tools have handles cover ed with a soft material that does not insulat e you when working with live electrical curr ents. Many customers have, near their equipment, rubber oor mats that contain small conductive bers t o decr ease electr ostatic dischar ges.
V oltage-selection switch Some computers ar e equipped with a voltage-selection switch located near the power -cord connection point on the computer . If your computer has a voltage-selection switch, ensur e that you set the switch t o match the voltage available at your electrical outlet.
5. Check for any obvious alter ations. Use good judgment as to the safety of any alter ations. 6. Check inside the unit for any obvious unsafe conditions, such as metal lings, contamination, wat er or other liquids, or signs of r e or smoke damage.

Chapter 5. Diagnostic progr ams Diagnostic progr ams ar e used to t est hardwar e components of your comput er . Diagnostic progr ams can also r eport oper ating-system-contr olled settings that interfere with the correct oper ation of your system.
Running the diagnostic pr ogram fr om the diagnostic disc This section pr ovides instructions on how to run the diagnostic pr ogram from the diagnostic disc that you creat ed. T o run the diagnostic pr ogram from the diagnostic disc that you creat ed, do the following: 1.

Chapter 6. Using the Setup Utility pr ogram Y ou can use the Setup Utility progr am to view and change the conguration settings of your comput er , regar dless of which oper ating syst em you are using. However , the oper ating syst em settings might override any similar settings in the Setup Utility progr am.

Locating connect ors, contr ols, and indicators on the front of your computer Figure 1 “F r ont connector , contr ol, and indicator locations” on page 74 shows the locations of the connectors, controls, and indicat ors on the front of your comput er .
Locating connect ors on the r ear of your computer Figure 2 “Rear connect or locations” on page 75 shows the locations of the connectors on the rear of your computer . Some connect ors on the rear of your computer ar e color -coded to help you determine where t o connect the cables on your computer .
Locating components Figure 3 “Component locations” on page 76 shows the locations of the various components in your computer . T o r emove the comput er cover , see “Removing the computer cover ” on page 79.
Locating parts on the syst em board Figure 4 “System board parts locations” on page 77 shows the locations of the parts on the system board. Figure 4.
Locating internal drives Internal drives ar e devices that your computer uses t o read and stor e data. Y ou can add drives to your computer to increase stor age capacity and enable your comput er t o read other types of media. Internal drives ar e installed in bays.
When you handle comput er parts and components, take these precautions to avoid static-electricity damage: • Limit your movement. Movement can cause static electricity to build up ar ound you. • Always carefully handle the parts and other computer components.
4. Remove any locking device that secur es the comput er cover , such as a padlock or an integr ated cable lock. 5. Remove any screws that secure the computer cover . 6. Pr ess the cover -release button on the side of the computer and slide the cover to the r ear of the computer to r emove the cover .

3. At the rear of the comput er , press the release button 1 to open the car d latch 2 . Figure 8. Opening the PCI card latch 4. Depending on whether you are installing or replacing a PCI card, do one of the following: • If you are installing a PCI card, r emove the appr opriate metal slot cover .

7. Pivot the card latch to the closed position t o secur e the PCI card. Figure 10. Installing a PCI card 8. T o complet e the installation or r eplacement, go to “Completing the parts replacement” on page 113.
• If you are r eplacing an old memory module, open the retaining clips and gently pull the memory module out of the memory slot. Figure 11. Removing a memory module • If you ar e installing a memory module, open the r etaining clips of the memory slot into which you want t o install the memory module.
7. P osition the new memory module over the memory slot. Mak e sure that the notch 1 on the memory module aligns corr ectly with the slot key 2 on the system boar d. P ush the memory module straight down into the slot until the retaining clips close. Figure 13.
• If you are replacing an optical drive, disconnect the signal cable and the power cable fr om the r ear of the optical drive, pr ess the blue release butt on, and then slide the optical drive out of the fr ont of the computer . Figure 14. Removing the optical drive 5.
6. Slide the new optical drive into the drive bay fr om the fr ont of the computer until the optical drive snaps into position. Figure 16. Installing the optical drive 7. Connect the signal cable and the power cable to the new optical drive. Figure 17.
Note: The card r eader is only available in some models. F or new installation, see “Installing the car d r eader ” on page 89. F or r eplacement, see “Replacing the card reader” on page 91. Installing the card reader T o install the card reader , do the following: 1.

Replacing the card reader T o r eplace the card r eader , do the following: 1. Remove all media from the drives and turn off all attached devices and the comput er . Then, disconnect all power cor ds fr om electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connected to the computer .
8. Slide the new car d reader int o the drive bay until it snaps into position. Figure 24. Installing the card reader 9. Reconnect the card reader cable to F ront USB connector 2 on the system board. See “L ocating parts on the system board” on page 77.

5. Lay the computer on its side and remove the four scr ews at the r ear of the chassis that secur e the power supply assembly . Figure 27. Removing the screws for the power supply assembly 6. Slide the power supply assembly to the fr ont of the comput er and then lift it out of the chassis.
2. Remove the comput er cover . See “Removing the computer cover ” on page 79. 3. Lay the computer on its side for easier access to the system boar d. 4. Locat e the heat sink and fan assembly . See “Locating parts on the system boar d” on page 77.
10. Connect the heat sink and fan assembly cable t o the micropr ocessor fan connect or on the syst em board. See “L ocating parts on the system board” on page 77. 11. T o complet e the installation or r eplacement, go to “Completing the parts replacement” on page 113.

b. Note the orientation of the micropr ocessor in the socket. Y ou can either look for the small triangle 1 on one corner of the micropr ocessor or note the orientation of the notches 2 on the micropr ocessor . This is important when installing the new micr oprocessor on the system board.

1. Release the lever securing the microprocessor r etainer and open the retainer to access the micropr ocessor . 2. Gr asp the micropr ocessor on the sides and lift it str aight up and out of the sock et. Do not touch the contacts on the micropr ocessor socket.

6. Insert the two tabs 2 of the new front fan assembly into the corresponding holes in the chassis, and press the other two tabs 1 through the holes until the fr ont fan assembly is secured in place. 5. The rear fan assembly is attached to the chassis by four rubber mounts. Remove the rear fan assembly by br eaking or cutting the rubber mounts and gently pulling the r ear fan assembly out of the chassis. Note: The new rear fan assembly will have four new rubber mounts attached.
7. Pull on the tips of the rubber mounts until the r ear fan assembly is secur ed in place. Figure 44. Installing the rear fan assembly 8. 3. Locat e the internal speak er connector on the system board. See “Locating parts on the system board” on page 77. 4. Disconnect the internal speaker cable fr om the system board. 5. Push the metal tab 1 on the top of the internal speaker outwar d and slide the internal speaker upwar d to completely remove it fr om the chassis.
6. P osition the new int ernal speak er int o the four metal clips 1 and push downwar d on the internal speaker until it is secured in place. Figure 47. Installing a new internal speaker 7. 4. T o reinstall the front bezel, align the other three plastic tabs on the bott om of the fr ont bezel with the corresponding holes in the chassis, then pivot the front bez el inward until it snaps into position.

P osition the new memory module over the memory slot. Mak e sure that the notch 1 on the memory module aligns corr ectly with the slot key 2 on the system boar d.
3. Rotate the PCI card retainer to the open position. 4. Depending on whether you are installing or replacing a PCI card, do one of the following: • If you are installing a PCI card, r emove the appr opriate metal slot cover .
6. Install the new car d into the appropriat e card slot on the system board and rotate the car d retainer t o the closed position. See “Locating parts on the system boar d” on page 77. Figure 61. Place the new heat sink and fan assembly on the system boar d so that the four screws ar e aligned with the corresponding holes in the syst em board.
10. Lower and position the heat sink fan duct on the top of the heat sink and fan assembly until the two screw holes in the heat sink fan duct are aligned with those in the heat sink and fan assembly . Install the two scr ews t o secur e the heat sink fan duct.

6. Pivot the optical drive upward and disconnect the power supply assembly cables fr om all drives and from power connectors 1 and 2 on the syst em boar d. Figure 81. Power connectors on the system board Note: Y ou might also need to release the power supply assembly cables fr om some cable clips or ties that secur e the cables to the chassis.
7. At the r ear of the computer , remove the three screws that secur e the power supply assembly . Pr ess the power supply clip 1 downwar d to release the power supply assembly and then slide the power supply assembly t o the fr ont of the comput er .
11. Lower and position the heat sink fan duct on the top of the heat sink and fan assembly until the two screw holes in the heat sink fan duct are aligned with those in the heat sink and fan assembly . Install the two scr ews t o secur e the heat sink fan duct.
3. Locat e the syst em board and disconnect all cables connected t o the syst em board. See “L ocating parts on the syst em boar d” on page 77. 4. Remove the heat sink and fan assembly with the fan duct. See “Replacing the heat sink and fan assembly” on page 139.
b. Note the orientation of the micropr ocessor in the socket. Y ou can either look for the small triangle 1 on one corner of the micropr ocessor or note the orientation of the notches 2 on the micropr ocessor . This is important when installing the new micr oprocessor on the system board.
12. Reinstall the heat sink and fan assembly with the fan duct as shown. See “Replacing the heat sink and fan assembly” on page 139. Figure 88. Reinstalling the heat sink and fan assembly with the fan duct 13. Reconnect all cables that wer e disconnected fr om the system boar d.
4. Remove the har d disk drive. See “Replacing the har d disk drive” on page 134. 5. Pivot the optical drive bay assembly upward to gain access to the system board. See “ Accessing the system board components and drives” on page 124. 6. Remove all memory modules and PCI car ds that ar e currently installed.
16. Lower the optical drive bay assembly . See “ Accessing the system boar d components and drives” on page 124. 17. Install the har d disk drive. See “Replacing the hard disk drive” on page 134. 18. T o complet e the r eplacement, go t o “Completing the parts replacement” on page 113.
