Read this rst Be sur e to follow the important tips given her e to continue to get the most use and enjoyment out of your computer . F ailure to do so might lead t o discomfort or injury, or cause your computer to fail. When your computer is turned on or the batt ery is charging, the base, the palm rest, and some other parts may become hot.
Protect your computer and data when moving it. Before moving a comput er equipped with a hard disk drive, do one of the following, and make sure that the power switch is off or is blinking: • T urn it off. • P ress Fn+F4 t o put it in sleep (standby) mode.
Conditions that require immediate action Products can become damaged due to misuse or neglect. Some pr oduct damage is serious enough that the pr oduct should not be used again until it has been inspected and, if necessary, repaired by an authoriz ed servicer .
Replaceable Units, or CRUs. L enovo provides documentation with instructions when it is appropriate for customers to install options or replace CRUs. Y ou must closely follow all instructions when installing or replacing parts. The Off state of a power indicator does not necessarily mean that voltage levels inside a product are zer o.
Do not use any power cords where the electrical contacts on either end show signs of corr osion or overheating or where the power cord appears to have been damaged in any way .
Hazardous voltage, current, and energy levels are present inside any component that has this label attached. There are no serviceable parts inside these components.

When disposing of the battery, comply with local ordinances or regulations. The battery pack should be stored at room temperature, charged to approximat ely 30 to 50% of capacity .

4 Combo audio jack T o listen t o the sound from your computer , connect a headphone or a headset, that has a 3.5mm 4-pole plug, to the combo audio jack. Notes: • If you are using a headset with a function switch, for example, a headset for an iPhone mobile digital device, do not press this switch while using the headset.

3 USB connector (left) The Universal Serial Bus connector is used for connecting devices compatible with a USB interface, such as a print er or a digital camera. Note: Y our computer is compatible with USB 1.1 and 2.0. When you attach a USB cable to the connect or , make sure that the mark is t o the upper side.

5 Monitor connector Y ou can attach an e xternal monit or or a pr ojector t o your comput er to display comput er information. Note: If you attach your computer to the ThinkP ad X220 Ultr abase and use a monitor connect or , use the monitor connect or on the ThinkP ad X220 Ultr abase, not the one on the computer .
1 Battery Use your computer with battery power whenever ac power is unavailable. By installing a second battery, available as an option, in the n the serial Ultrabay slim, you can extend the operating time of the comput er . Y ou can also use P ower Manager to adjust your power setting as needed.

Status indicators 1 Device Access A hard disk drive or an optional drive, such as a drive in the Ultr abay, is being used to r ead or write data. When this indicator is blinking, do not put the computer into sleep (standby) mode, remove the device from the bay, or turn off the computer .
8 Numeric lock By default, when the numeric lock is on, the numeric lock indicator is displayed on the screen. T o change the settings of the numeric lock indicat or , see “Changing display settings” on page 70. Note: Another mode available for your computer , though there is no indicator for it, is Scroll L ock mode.

Chapter 2. Using your computer Y our computer is powerful and is loaded with featur es and applications. Use it t o accomplish anything, any day, any time.
On the go and need to use battery power more effectively? • T o conserve power , or t o suspend oper ation without exiting applications or saving les, see the explanation about “power -saving modes” on page 59 .

3. Close the computer display slowly, holding the upper left and right sides with both hands. Note: Make sure that the display is r otated at 180 degr ees, so that the back of the display faces the keyboard. 4. Y our computer is now in the tablet mode .
2. F ollow the dir ection shown by the display swivel indicator and r otate the display slowly (gure below shows count er-clockwise rotation as an e xample) until the fr ont of the display is facing the keyboar d. Y our computer is now in the notebook mode .
Note: The pen contains pr essure sensors. Do not push the tip of the pen for an ext ended period of time. Do not subject the pen to shock or vibr ation. The T ablet Digitizer P en consists of a tip 2 , a click button 3 , and an er aser tip 4 . Hold the pen and point the tip at the display to move the cursor 1 .
F or a single click, tap the display once with your nger . F or a double click, tap the display twice without pausing. F or a right click, tap the display once and then hold your nger on the display until a circular symbol appears. When you take your nger off the display, the right-click menu will open.

ThinkV antage button The blue ThinkV antage butt on can help you in many situations when your computer is working normally, and even when it is not. Y ou can also use the ThinkV antage button to inter.
T o enable or disable the numeric keypad, press and hold Shift or Fn and then pr ess NmLk ( ScrLk ). Note: The ne xt drawing shows the locations of the keys that serve as the 10-key numeric keypad.
F unction key combinations By setting the function keys, you can change operational features instantly . T o use this function, pr ess and hold the Fn key 1 ; then press one of the function keys 2 .
– T o use Fn+F3, Fn+F4, and Fn+F12 key combinations, you must have the ThinkP ad PM device driver installed on your comput er . F or information on the power management function, refer to “P ower management” on page 58.
Notes: If you want to use Fn+F5 to enable or disable the wireless features, the following device drivers must be installed on your computer beforehand: – P ower Management driver – OnScreen Display Utility – Wireless device drivers F or information on the wir eless features, r efer to “Wireless connections” on page 62.
V olume and mute buttons Y ou can adjust the sound level of the built-in speakers by using the following thr ee buttons: If you mute the sound and then turn off your comput er , the sound will r emain muted when you turn on your computer again. T o turn on the sound, pr ess the plus ( + ) or minus ( - ) button.
• F or details about contr olling volume, refer to your Windows online help. Setting the microphone mut e button in Windows 7 and Windows Vista By default, you can toggle all of your r ecording devices between the mut e state and the un-mute stat e by pressing the microphone mute button.
T o display the shortcut menu for an object, select the object on the desktop or within an application and then pr ess this key . Using the UltraNav pointing device Y our comput er may come with the UltraNav pointing device.
If you ar e not familiar with the T r ackP oint, these instructions will help you get started: 1. Place your hands in the typing position, and pr ess gently with either index nger on the pointing stick in the direction in which you want the point er t o move.
Note: If you replace the keyboard, a new k eyboard is shipped with the default cap. If you wish, you can keep the cap from your old keyboar d and use it on the new one. Using the touch pad The t ouch pad is below the T rackP oint buttons at the bott om of the keyboar d.
3. Click the UltraNav tab and proceed t o customizing the touch pad. F or details, refer to the Help in the Utility . Behavior of the UltraNav and an external mouse By default, the T rackP oint and the t ouch pad ar e set to Enabled . Note: If you want t o attach an e xternal mouse to a USB connector , select “Disabled.
Y ou can now change the properties of Ultr aNav by clicking the UltraNav icon on the syst em tray . P ower management When you need to use your computer away fr om electrical outlets, you depend on battery power to keep your computer running. Differ ent computer components consume power at differ ent rat es.
– If the battery has not been used for a long time. Before you charge the batt er y, make sure that its temper ature is at least 10°C (50°F). Charging the battery When you check battery status and.

Wireless LAN A wireless local ar ea network covers a relatively small geographic ar ea, such as an ofce building or a house. Devices based on the 802.11 standar ds can connect to this network. Wireless W AN A wireless wide ar ea network covers a broader geographic area.
Wireless upgr adeable ThinkP ad models Y our computer can be wireless upgr adeable. This means that your comput er has an antenna that can support wir eless LAN access when wireless LAN access points are available. Wir eless devices ar e available from Lenovo.
Note: If you use the wir eless featur e (the 802.11 standard) of your computer simultaneously with a Bluetooth option, data tr ansmission speed can be delayed and the performance of the wir eless featur e can be degraded.
T o use the Bluet ooth featur es, do the following: 1. Double-click the My Bluetooth Places icon on the desktop. 2. F or Windows XP , go to Bluetooth T asks and double-click View devices in r ange . A list of the devices on which Bluet ooth has been enabled appears.
F or details, r efer to the help for Bluetooth . T o see the help, double-click My Bluet ooth Places , and click Help and then Bluetooth help . Another way t o start the help is to right-click Bluet ooth Congur ation in the system tr ay of the task bar , and click Advanced Congur ation and then Help .
2. Click P erformance and Maintenance ; then click System . 3. Click the Hardware tab; then click Device Manager . 4. Double-click Bluetooth Radios to e xtract the Bluetooth Radios device tree. 5. Double-click the ThinkP ad Bluetooth with Enhanced Data Rate icon to open the P roperties window .
– P ower to the wireless r adio is on. The signal str ength of the wir eless connection is ex cellent. • Access Connections Gauge stat es: wir eless W AN – No signal – Signal level 1 – Signal level 2 – Signal level 3 Note: F or more information about Access Connections Gauge, see the Help in Access Connections.
Enabling or disabling the wireless feature T o enable or disable the wir eless featur e, press Fn+F5. A list of wir eless features is displayed. Y ou can turn the feature on and off with a single click. Y ou can also enable or disable the feature by the following procedur es.
3. Under F ont Size , click Large F onts or Extra Large F onts . 4. Click Apply to apply the settings. 5. Click OK . If you are prompt ed to restart the computer after you click OK or Apply , the change will take effect aft er the computer restarts. Numeric lock T o change the numeric lock setting, do as follows: F or Windows 7: 1.
Connecting an ext ernal monitor T o attach an e xternal monit or , do as follows: F or Windows 7: 1. Connect the e xternal monit or to the monitor connector; then connect the monitor to an electrical outlet 2. T urn on the external monitor . 3. Change the display output location by pressing Fn+F7.
3. Right-click on the desktop, and click Screen resolution . Note: If your comput er cannot detect the ext ernal monitor , click the Detect button. 4. Set Resolution . 5. Click Advanced Settings . 6. Click the Monitor tab. Check the monit or information window to make sur e that the monitor type is correct.
16. Set Resolution and Colors in the Display Settings window. 17. Click OK . F or Windows XP: 1. Connect the e xternal monitor to the monitor connect or , and then connect the monit or to an electrical outlet. 2. T urn on the e xternal monitor and the comput er .

Playing sound Y our project or might have one or more audio-input connectors. T o pr oject sound, you will need to attach the combo audio jack on your computer to these connectors, using an audio cable (commer cially available). Using dual displays Using the Extend desktop function Y our computer supports a function named the Extend desktop.
F or Windows Vista: 1. Connect the e xternal monit or to the monitor connector; then connect the monitor to an electrical outlet. 2. T urn on the external monitor . 3. If this is the rst time the e xternal monitor has been connected, the New Display Det ected dialog bo x opens.
• Recording and playback of PCM and W A V les in 16-bit or 24-bit format. • Playback of a WA V le at a sample r ate of 44.1KHz to 192 KHz. • Playback of MIDI les thr ough a Wave table synthesizer under Micr osoft Windows oper ating systems.
Y ou can also use the integr ated camer a with other progr ams that pr ovide features such as photogr aphing, video capturing, and video confer encing. T o use the integr ated camer a with other progr ams, open one of the progr ams and start the phot ographing, video capturing, or videoconferencing function.

Note: Y ou might want t o note your power -on password in a safe place. Otherwise, if you for get it, you have to tak e your computer to a Lenovo r eseller or a marketing r epresentative to have the password canceled.
