Software overview The computer comes with a preinstalled operating system and several pr einstalled applications. Software provided by Lenovo The following software pr ograms are provided by Lenovo to help you impr ove productivity and r educe the cost associated with maintaining your computer .
Lenovo System T oolbox The Lenovo System T oolbox diagnostic program is preinstalled on your har d disk drive. This diagnostic program works thr ough the W indows operating system to diagnose hardwar e problems and report operating-system-contr olled settings that can cause hardwar e failures.

Locating connectors on the rear of your computer Figure 2 shows the locations of the connectors on the rear of your computer . Some connectors on the rear of your computer ar e color-coded to help you determine where to connect the cables on your computer .
Connector Description Audio line-in connector Used to receive audio signals fr om an external audio device, such as a stereo system. When you attach an external audio device, a cable is connected between the audio line-out connector of the device and the audio line-in connector of the computer .
Locating components Figure 3 shows the locations of the various components in your computer . T o remove the computer cover , see “Removing the computer cover” on page 14.
Locating parts on the system board Figure 4 shows the locations of the parts on the system board. 1 4-pin power connector 13 Front panel connector 2 Micropr ocessor 14 Clear CM.
Internal drives are installed in bays. In this manual, the bays ar e referred to as bay 1, bay 2, and so on. Figure 5 shows the locations of the drive bays. The following list describes the type and size of the drive that you can install in each bay: 1 Bay 1 - Maximum height: 43.
Chapter 2. Installing or replacing hardware This chapter provides instr uctions on how to install or replace hardwar e for your computer . Handling static-sensitive devices Do not open the static-protective package containing the new part until the defective part has been removed fr om the computer and you are ready to install the new part.
Installing external options Y ou can connect external options to your computer , such as external speakers, a printer , or a scanner . For some external options, you must install additional software in addition to making the physical connection.
6. Press the cover -release button on the side of the computer and slide the cover to the rear of the computer to r emove the cover . Removing and reinstalling the front bezel Attention Do not open yo.
2. Remove the front bezel by r eleasing the three plastic tabs on the left side and pivoting the front bezel outwar d. 3. T o reinstall the front bezel, align the thr ee plastic tabs on the right side of the front bezel with the corr esponding holes in the chassis, then pivot the front bezel inwards until it snaps into position on the left side.

3. If you are installing a PCI car d, remove the appropriate metal slot cover . If you are r eplacing an old PCI card, grasp the old card that is curr ently installed and gently pull it out of the slot. Note: The card fits tightly into the car d slot.
6. Pivot the card latch to the closed position to secur e the PCI card. What to do next: v T o work with another piece of hardware, go to the appr opriate section. v T o complete the installation or replacement, go to “Completing the parts replacement” on page 40.
v Use 1 GB, 2 GB, or 4 GB memory modules in any combination up to a maximum of 16 GB. v Install memory modules in the sequence of DIMM 1, DIMM 3, DIMM 2, and DIMM 4. See “Locating parts on the system board” on page 1 1. T o install or replace a memory module, do the following: 1.
5. Position the new memory module over the memory slot. Make sure that the notch 1 on the memory module aligns correctly with the slot key 2 on the system board. Push the memory module straight down into the slot until the retaining clips close.
v If you are r eplacing an optical drive, disconnect the signal cable and the power cable from the r ear of the optical drive, press the blue release button, and then slide the optical drive out of the front of the computer . 4. Install the optical drive retainer on the side of the new optical drive.
5. Slide the new optical drive into the drive bay from the fr ont of the computer until the optical drive snaps into position. 6. Connect the signal cable and the power cable to the new optical drive. 7. Reinstall the front bezel. See “Removing and r einstalling the front bezel” on page 15.
Replacing the power supply assembly Attention Do not open your computer or attempt any repair befor e reading and understanding the “Important safety information” in the ThinkStation Safety and Warranty Guide that came with your computer . 10. Secure the power supply assembly cables with the cable clips and ties in the chassis. What to do next: v T o work with another piece of hardware, go to the appr opriate section. v T o complete the replacement, go to “Completing the parts replacement” on page 40.
5. Carefully r emove the four screws 1 that secure the heat sink and fan assembly to the system board. Note: Carefully r emove the four screws from the system boar d to avoid any possible damage to the system board. The four scr ews cannot be removed fr om the heat sink and fan assembly .
What to do next: v T o work with another piece of hardware, go to the appr opriate section. v T o complete the replacement, go to “Completing the parts replacement” on page 40.
6. Pull on the blue handle 3 to release and r emove the hard disk drive from the drive cage. 7. Flex the sides of the blue bracket to remove the har d disk drive from the bracket.
10. Align the drive cage pivot pin with the slot 1 in the upper drive cage and slide the hard disk drive cage into the chassis. 11 . Connect the signal cable and the power cable to the new hard disk drive.
T o replace the secondary hard disk drive, do the following: 1. Remove the computer cover . See “Removing the computer cover” on page 14. 2. Locate the secondary hard disk drive. See “Locating internal drives” on page 11 . 3. Disconnect the signal cable and the power cable from the har d disk drive.
7. T o install a new hard disk drive into the blue bracket, flex the bracket and align pin 1 , pin 2 , pin 3 , and pin 4 on the bracket with the corresponding holes in the har d disk drive. Do not touch the circuit board 5 on the bottom of the hard disk drive.
9. Install the hard disk drive cage into the chassis until it snaps into position underneath the metal tab. Make sure that the har d disk drive cage release button is secured in the chassis. 10. Connect the signal cable and the power cable to the new hard disk drive.
2. Remove the front bezel. See “Removing and r einstalling the front bezel” on page 15. 3. Disconnect the card r eader cable from the front USB connector on the system board.
Replacing the front fan assembly Attention Do not open your computer or attempt any repair befor e reading and understanding the “Important safety information” in the ThinkStation Safety and Warranty Guide that came with your computer . 4. Release the two tabs 1 that attach the front fan assembly to the chassis as shown and then completely remove the fr ont fan from the chassis. Figure 28.
5. Insert the two tabs 2 of the new front fan assembly into the corr esponding holes in the chassis, and press the other two tabs 1 thr ough the holes until the front fan assembly is secur ed in place. 6. Connect the front fan assembly cable to the power fan connector on the system board.
Replacing the rear fan assembly Attention Do not open your computer or attempt any repair befor e reading and understanding the “Important safety information” in the ThinkStation Safety and Warranty Guide that came with your computer . 6. Pull on the tips of the rubber mounts until the r ear fan assembly is secured in place. 7. Connect the rear fan assembly cable to the system fan connector on the system board. What to do next: v T o work with another piece of hardware, go to the appr opriate section.
This section provides instr uctions on how to replace the keyboard. T o replace the keyboard, do the following: 1. Remove any media from the drives. Then, turn of f all attached devices and the computer . 2. Disconnect all power cords fr om electrical outlets.
3. Disconnect the old mouse cable from the computer . Note: Y our mouse might be connected to a PS/2 mouse connector 1 or a USB connector 2 . Depending on where your mouse is connected, see “Locating connectors on the rear of your computer” on page 8 or “Locating connectors on the front of your computer” on page 7.
4. Position the computer cover on the chassis so that the rail guides on the bottom of the computer cover engage the rails on the chassis. Then, push the cover to the front of the computer until it snaps into position. 5. If the computer cover is secured with thumbscr ews, install them.
Note: Make sure that any security cables you installed do not interfer e with other computer cables. Integrated cable lock An integrated cable lock, sometimes referr ed to as the Kensington lock, can be used to secure your computer to a desk, table, or other non-permanent fixtur e.
Padlock Y our computer is equipped with a padlock loop so that the cover cannot be removed when a padlock is installed. Password protection T o deter unauthorized use of your computer , you can use the Setup Utility program to set a passwor d. When you turn on your computer , you are prompted to type the password.
6. T urn on the computer and leave it on for approximately 10 seconds. Then, turn off the computer by holding the power switch for appr oximately five seconds. 7. Repeat step 1 and step 2. 8. Move the Clear CMOS /Recovery jumper back to the standard position (pin 1 and pin 2).
Chapter 3. Recovery information This chapter will help you get familiar with recovery solutions pr ovided by Lenovo. This chapter explains when and how to use the following recovery methods: v Creatin.
v T o create Product Recovery discs on the W indows V ista operating system, click Start → All Programs → ThinkV antage → Create Product Recovery Media .
Performing backup and recovery operations The Rescue and Recovery program enables you to back up all your har d disk drive contents including the operating system, data files, software pr ograms, and personal settings.
4. Follow the instructions on the scr een. v T o perform a recovery operation using the Rescue and Recovery program on the W indows V ista operating system or the W indows XP operating system, do the following: 1. From the W indows desktop, click Start → All Programs → ThinkV antage → Rescue and Recovery .
3. When you hear beeps or see a logo screen, r elease the F1 1 key . 4. If you have set a Rescue and Recovery password, type your passwor d when prompted. The Rescue and Recovery workspace opens after a short delay . Note: If the Rescue and Recovery workspace fails to open, see “Solving recovery pr oblems” on page 52.
4. In the Rescue Media area, select the type of r escue media you want to create. Y ou can create a rescue medium using a disc, a USB har d disk drive, or a secondary internal hard disk drive.
Creating a recovery repair diskette This section provides instr uctions on how to create a recovery r epair diskette. T o create a recovery r epair diskette, do the following: 1. T urn on the computer , and make sure that your computer has Internet access.
4. Open the DRIVERS folder . W ithin the DRIVERS folder , there are several subfolders named for various devices installed in your computer , such as AUDIO or VIDEO. 5. Open the appropriate device subfolder . 6. Do one of the following: v In the device subfolder , look for a README.
Chapter 4. Using the Setup Utility program The Setup Utility program is used to view and change the configuration settings of your computer , regar dless of which operating system you are using. However , the operating system settings might override any similar settings in the Setup Utility program.
Password considerations A password can be any combination of up to 64 alphabetic and numeric characters. For security reasons, it is r ecommended to use a strong password that cannot be easily compromised.
Enabling or disabling a device This section provides information on how to enable or disable user access to the following devices: Floppy Driver A When this option is set to Disabled , the floppy drive cannot be accessed. USB Setup Use this option to enable or disable a USB connector .
Selecting or changing the startup device sequence T o view or permanently change the configured startup device sequence, do the following: 1. Start the Setup Utility program. See “Starting the Setup Utility pr ogram” on page 53. 2. From the Setup Utility pr ogram main menu, select Startup .
Chapter 5. Configuring RAID This chapter provides information about how to configur e Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) for your computer . Note: The information about configuring RAID in this chapter is applicable only for a W indows environment.
4. Use the arrow keys to select a RAID level in the RAID Level field and pr ess T ab. 5. If appropriate, use the arr ow keys to select a Stripe Size in the Stripe Size field and press T ab. 6. T ype a volume size in the Capacity field and press T ab. 7.
Chapter 6. Updating system programs This chapter contains information about updating POST/BIOS and recovering fr om a POST/BIOS update failure. Using system programs System programs ar e the basic layer of software built into your computer . System programs include the POST , the BIOS code, and the Setup Utility program.
Note: If you want to change the machine type/model, press Y when prompted. T ype in the machine type/model and then press Enter . 6. Follow the instructions on the scr een to complete the update.
Note: The recovery session will take two to thr ee minutes. During this time you will hear a series of beeps. 11 . After the recovery session is completed, the series of beeps will end, and the system will automatically turn off. Remove the disc fr om the optical drive before the system completely turns of f.

Chapter 7. T roubleshooting and diagnostics This chapter describes some basic troubleshooting and diagnostic pr ograms. If your computer problem is not described her e, see Chapter 8, “Getting information, help, and service,” on page 69 for additional troubleshooting r esources.
Symptom Action The operating system does not start. V erify that: v There is no diskette in the diskette drive. v The startup sequence includes the device where the operating system r esides. Usually , the operating system is on the hard disk drive. For more information, see “Selecting a startup device” on page 55.
The Lenovo System T oolbox program is a diagnostic program that works thr ough the W indows operating system and enables you to view symptoms and solutions for computer problems, access the Lenovo tr oubleshooting center , update system drivers, and review system information.
1. Download a self-starting bootable CD/DVD image (known as an ISO image) of the diagnostic program fr om: http://www .lenovo.com/support 2. Use any CD/DVD burning software to cr eate a diagnostic disc with the ISO image.
T o clean the optical mouse, do the following: 1. T urn off your computer . 2. Disconnect the mouse cable from the computer . 3. T urn the mouse upside down to look at the lens. a. If there is a smudge on the lens, gently clean the ar ea with a plain cotton-tipped swab.
4. Place your hand over the retainer ring and ball 2 , and then turn the mouse right-side up, so that the retainer ring and ball fall out into your hand. 5. W ash the ball in warm, soapy water then dry it with a clean cloth. 6. Blow air carefully into the ball cage 4 to dislodge dust and lint.
Chapter 8. Getting information, help, and service This chapter contains information about help, service, and technical assistance for products manufactur ed by Lenovo. Information resources Y ou can use the information in this section to access useful resources r elating to your computing needs.
