Chapter 2. Installing or r eplacing har dware This chapt er provides instructions on how t o install or r eplace hardwar e for your comput er . Handling static-sensitive devices Do not open the static-prot ective package containing the new part until the defective part has been removed from the computer and you are ready to install the new part.
Opening the comput er cover Attention: Do not open your computer or attempt any r epair before reading and understanding the “Important safety information” in the ThinkCentre Safety and W arranty Guide that came with your computer . T o obtain a copy of the ThinkCentre Safety and Warranty Guide , go t o: http://www.
T o r emove and r einstall the fr ont bezel, do the following: 1. Remove all media fr om the drives and turn off all attached devices and the comput er . Then, disconnect all power cor ds fr om electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that ar e connect ed t o the computer .
4. Open the r etaining clips. If you ar e r eplacing an old memory module, open the r etaining clips and remove the memory module being replaced as shown. Figure 7. Removing the memory module 5. Insert the notched end 2 of the new memory module int o the slot 1 .
T o r eplace the hard disk drive, do the following: 1. Remove all media fr om the drives and turn off all attached devices and the comput er . Then, disconnect all power cor ds fr om electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that ar e connect ed t o the computer .
10. Reconnect the power cable t o the optical drive. What to do next: • T o work with another piece of har dware, go to the appr opriate section. • T o complete the installation or r eplacement, go to “Completing the parts replacement” on page 25.
7. Slide the new optical drive into the drive bay until it snaps into position. Figure 13. Installing the optical drive 8. Connect the signal cable and the power cable t o the new optical drive. 9. Reinstall the front bezel. See “Removing and reinstalling the front bez el” on page 12.

3. Locate the internal speaker . See “L ocating components” on page 8. 4. Disconnect the internal speaker cable from the system board. See “Locating parts on the system board” on page 9. 5. Pr ess the int ernal speak er lock latch 1 , slide the int ernal speak er downwar ds t o r emove it from the chassis.
4. Disconnect the front audio and USB assembly cables from the system boar d and note the cables r outing. See “Locating parts on the system boar d” on page 9. 5. Remove the scr ew that secures the front audio and USB assembly to the chassis. Figure 18.

When you turn on your computer , you are pr ompted t o type the passwor d. The comput er cannot be used until a valid passwor d is typed in.

Chapter 3. Recover y information This chapter provides information about the r ecovery solutions provided by L enovo. This chapt er contains the following t opics: • Creating and using recovery medi.
Using recovery media This section provides instructions on how to use r ecovery media on differ ent oper ating syst ems. On the Windows 7 oper ating system and the Windows Vista oper ating system, you can use recovery media to rest ore the computer to the factory default settings only .
2. In the Rescue and Recovery main window , click the Launch advanced Rescue and Recovery arrow . 3. Click Back up your har d drive and select backup operation options.
• Restor e your hard disk drive to the fact ory default settings The Rescue and Recovery workspace enables you to rest ore the complete cont ents of your hard disk drive t o the factory default settings.
• T o create a r escue medium on the Windows 7 oper ating system, do the following: 1. F rom the Windows desktop, click Start ➙ All Programs ➙ Lenovo ThinkV antage T ools ➙ Enhanced Backup and Restore . The Rescue and Recovery pr ogram opens. 2.
2. Use Windows Explorer or My Computer t o display the dir ectory structure of your har d disk drive. 3. Go to the C:SWT OOLS direct ory . 4. Open the DRIVERS folder . Within the DRIVERS folder , ther e ar e several subfolders named for various devices installed in your computer , such as A UDIO or VIDEO .
Chapter 4. Using the Setup Utility pr ogram The Setup Utility pr ogram is used to view and change the congur ation settings of your comput er , regar dless of which oper ating syst em you are using. However , the operating system settings might override any similar settings in the Setup Utility progr am.
• Not be your name or your user name • Not be a common word or a common name • Be signicantly different fr om your pr evious passwor ds P ower-On Password When a P ower-On P assword is set, you are prompted to type a valid passwor d each time the computer is turned on.
2. F rom the Setup Utility pr ogram main menu, select Devices . 3. Depending on the device you want to enable or disable, do one of the following: • Select USB Setup to enable or disable a USB device. • Select A T A Drive Setup to enable or disable an internal or e xternal SA T A device.

Chapter 5. Updating system progr ams This chapter provides information about updating the POS T and BIOS, and how to recover fr om a POS T and BIOS updat e failure. Using system pr ograms System pr ograms are the basic layer of software built into your computer .

Chapter 6. T r oubleshooting and diagnostics This chapter describes some basic tr oubleshooting and diagnostic progr ams. If your computer pr oblem is not described here, see Chapter 7 “Getting information, help, and service” on page 45 for additional troubleshooting resour ces.
Symptom Action The operating system does not start. V erify that: • The startup sequence includes the device where the operating system resides. Usually, the oper ating system is on the har d disk drive. F or more information, see “Selecting a startup device” on page 37 .
PC-Doctor for Rescue and Recovery The PC-Doctor for Rescue and Recovery diagnostic progr am is part of the Rescue and Recovery workspace on each Lenovo comput er . Use the PC-Doctor for Rescue and Recovery diagnostic pr ogram if you are unable t o start the Windows oper ating system.
3. F ollow the instructions on the screen to select the diagnostic test you want t o run. Note: F or additional help, pr ess the F1 key . 4. Remove the diagnostic disc fr om the optical drive when you complet e the diagnostic pr ocess. Cleaning an optical mouse This section pr ovides instructions on how to clean an optical mouse.
