Protect your comput er and data when moving it. Before moving a comput er equipped with a hard disk drive, do one of the following, and make sur e that the power button is off or is blinking: • T urn it off. • P ut it in sleep mode. • P ut it in hibernation mode.
Conditions that requir e immediate action Products can become damaged due to misuse or neglect. Some pr oduct damage is serious enough that the product should not be used again until it has been inspect ed and, if necessary, repaired by an authorized servicer .

P ointing, selecting, and dr agging are all part of a single process that you can perform without moving your ngers fr om a typing position. F or more information, see “Using the Ultr aNav pointing device” on page 26.

4 Combo audio jack T o listen to the sound from your computer , connect a headphone or a headset that has a 3.5 mm 4-pole plug to the combo audio jack. Notes: • If you are using a headset with a function switch, for e xample, a headset for an iPhone ® mobile digital device, do not pr ess this switch while using the headset.

Note: The hidden service partition is the r eason why ther e is less fr ee space than e xpected on your har d disk drive or solid-state drive. This r eduction is more noticeable on the solid-state drive because of its smaller capacity . Rear view Figure 5.
System-status indicators 1 Wireless LAN/W AN/Bluetooth status indicator • Green : The wireless LAN, WAN, or Bluet ooth feature is on. • Off: Wireless network devices are disabled or the wireless r adio is turned off.

Machine type and model label The machine type and model label identies your computer . If you contact L enovo for help, the machine type and model number will help support technicians identify your comput er and pr ovide the highest level of service.
Certicate of Authenticity label The Microsoft ® Certicate of Authenticity label for the preinstalled operating syst em is attached. P rinted on this label ar e the pr oduct ID and the product key information for your comput er . Recor d this information and keep it in a safe place.

• Active Prot ection System The Active P rotection System progr am pr otects your hard disk drive when the shock sensor inside your computer detects a condition that could damage the drive, such as system tilt, e xcessive vibration, or shock. The har d disk drive is less vulner able t o damage when it is not oper ating.
• Message Center Plus The Message Cent er Plus progr am automatically displays messages t o inform you about important notices from Lenovo, such as alerts on system updates and alerts on conditions that r equire your attention.

On the Windows 8 operating system, pr ess the Windows key to switch between the curr ent workspace and the Start scr een. Y ou also can use the Windows key together with another key t o achieve other functions.
Using the T r ackP oint pointing device The T r ackP oint pointing device consists of a pointing stick 1 on the keyboard and three click buttons at the bottom of the keyboar d.
Note: If you r eplace the keyboar d, a new keyboard is shipped with the default cap. If you wish, you can keep the cap from your old keyboard and use it on the new one.
Disabling the T rackP oint pointing device or the touch pad T o disable the T r ackP oint pointing device or the touch pad, do the following: 1. Go t o Contr ol P anel and click Hardware and Sound ➙ Mouse ➙ UltraNav . 2. T o disable the T r ackPoint pointing device, clear the check bo x for Enable T rackP oint .
The ac power adapter that comes with your computer has two basic components: • The transformer pack that converts ac power for use with the computer . • The power cord that plugs into the ac outlet and into the transformer pack. Attention: Using an impr oper power cord might cause severe damage to your computer .
Managing your battery power T o achieve the best balance between performance and power saving, adjust your power plan settings. T o access power plan settings, do the following: • F or Windows 7: Start the P ower Manager progr am and then click the Power Plan tab.
Enabling the wakeup function If you put your computer into hibernation mode, and the wakeup function is disabled (this is the default setting), the comput er does not consume any power . If the wakeup function is enabled, it consumes a small amount of power .
DANGER If the rechargeable battery pack is incorrectly replaced, there is danger of an e xplosion. The battery pack contains a small amount of harmful substances. T o avoid possible injury: • Replace only with a battery of the type recommended by L enovo.
Note: Some models come with a built-in wireless W AN card enabling you to establish wireless connections over r emote public or privat e networks. Ethernet connections Y ou can connect t o your local network or a br oadband connection by use of the E thernet featur e built into your computer .
Tips for using the wir eless WAN feature T o achieve the best connection, use the following guidelines: • Keep your computer away from your body . • Place your computer on a at surface and open your computer display to an angel of slightly more than 90 degr ees.
3. Select Send T o ➙ Bluetooth Devices . 4. Select a Bluet ooth device and then follow the instructions on the scr een. Note: If you use the wireless feature (the 802.11 standar d) of your computer simultaneously with a Bluetooth option, the data tr ansmission speed can be delayed and the performance of the wir eless featur e can be degraded.
– Current location prole is connected. Access Connections wir eless status icon The Access Connections wir eless status icon displays the status and signal str ength of your wireless connection.
T o change the display settings, do the following: 1. Open Contr ol P anel and click Appearance and P ersonalization . 2. Click Display for further congur ation. Connecting a project or or e xternal display This topic pr ovides information about connecting a pr ojector or an ext ernal monit or .
6. Click the Monitor tab. Check the monitor information to make sur e that the monitor type is correct. If it is, click OK to close the window; otherwise pr oceed with the following st eps. 7. If more than two monitor types are displayed, select Generic PnP Monit or or Generic Non-PnP Monitor .
If the computer output does not appear on the DVI monitor , do the following: • F or a computer that supports NVIDIA Optimus Gr aphics: 1. Right-click on the desktop and select NVIDIA Control P anel . The NVIDIA Contr ol P anel window opens. 2. In the Select a T ask navigation pane at left under Display , click Set up multiple displays .
Using the Ext end desktop function Y our comput er supports a function named the Extend desktop function. With the Extend desktop function, you can display output on both the computer display and an e xternal monit or . Y ou also can display different desktop images on each monitor .
• F or Windows 8: Move the cursor to the t op-right or bott om-right corner of the screen to display the charms. Click the Search charm and sear ch X-Rite . If your computer comes with a color sensor , the display pr ovides a color prole that can work with the Microsoft Image Color Management (ICM) function.
Using the integr ated camer a If your computer has an integr ated camer a, you can use the camer a to preview your video image and take a snapshot of your curr ent image. T o start the camer a, do the following: • F or Windows 7: P ress Fn+F6 to open the Communications settings window .
• Secure Digital eXtended-C apacity (SDXC) card • MultiMediaCar d (MMC) Notes: • Y our computer does not support the CPRM feature for the SD car d.
Note: If you do not remove the card fr om your computer after you eject the car d from the Windows oper ating system, the car d can no longer be accessed.

Assistive technologies Some accessibility t echnologies are available thr ough the Accessibility Options progr am. Depending on your oper ating system, the number of accessibility options available varies. In gener al, accessibility options enhance the way users with hearing, vision, or mobility limitations navigate and use their computer .
• External mouse, if you are accustomed to using one • Ethernet cable • Extra batt ery, charged • A quality carrying case that provides adequate cushion and prot ection • External stor age device If you are tr aveling to another country, you might want to consider an ac power adapt er for the country t o which you are tr aveling.

2. T ype the master hard disk password. Note: T o r eturn to the icon , press F1 again. Note: P ress the Backspace key if you ent er a wrong passwor d while you ar e typing your passwor d. P ower-on passwor d Y ou can set a power -on password to help pr otect your computer against access by unauthorized users.

If you forget your hard disk passwor d, L enovo cannot r eset your passwor d or r ecover data fr om the har d disk. Y ou must take your computer to a L enovo authorized servicer or a marketing r epresentative t o have the hard disk drive r eplaced. Proof of purchase is requir ed, and a fee will be char ged for parts and service.
• Y our nger is very dry . • Y our nger is stained with dirt, mud, or oil. • The surface of your nger is very different fr om when you enr olled your ngerprint. • Y our nger is wet. • A nger is used that has not been enrolled.
Using and understanding rewalls If your system is preinstalled with a r ewall pr ogram, it pr otects against computer Internet security threats, unauthorized accesses, intrusions, and Int ernet attacks.
Chapter 5. Recovery overview This chapt er provides information about the recovery solutions pr ovided by L enovo on the Windows 7 operating system and the P ush Butt on Reset progr am on the Windows 8 oper ating system.
T o cr eate r ecovery media on the Windows 7 operating system, click Start ➙ All Progr ams ➙ Lenovo ThinkV antage T ools ➙ F actory Recovery Disks .
P er forming a recovery operation T o perform a recovery operation using the Rescue and Recovery progr am on the Windows 7 oper ating system, do the following: 1. F r om the Windows deskt op, click Start ➙ All Programs ➙ Lenovo ThinkVantage T ools ➙ Enhanced Backup and Restor e .
• T o rescue les from your hard disk drive or fr om a backup, click Rescue les and follow the instructions on the scr een. • T o r estore your hard disk drive from a Rescue and Recovery backup or to r estore your hard disk drive to the factory default settings, click Restore your system and follow the instructions on the screen.
3. In the Boot Menu window , select the USB har d disk drive as the rst boot device and pr ess Ent er . The rescue medium starts. • If you have cr eated a rescue medium using the secondary internal har d disk drive, set the secondary internal hard disk drive as the rst boot device in the startup device sequence to start the rescue medium.
Solving recovery pr oblems If you ar e unable to access the Rescue and Recovery workspace or the Windows envir onment, do one of the following: • Use a rescue medium t o start the Rescue and Recovery workspace. See “Cr eating and using a rescue medium” on page 66 .
1. Move your cursor to the t op-right or bottom-right corner of the screen to display the charms. Click Settings ➙ Change PC settings ➙ Gener al . 2. In the Advanced startup section, click Restart now ➙ T roubleshoot ➙ Advanced options . 3. Restart your computer following the instructions on the scr een.

Chapter 6. Replacing devices This chapter provides instructions on how to install or replace some har dware for your computer . • “Static electricity prevention” on page 71 • “Replacing the .
2. Unlock the bay lock latch and hold it in the unlocked position. Then, slide the bay eject latch in the direction shown by the arr ow, then pull out the Ultr abay device. 3. Insert the new device rmly into the bay . Replacing the battery Before you start, print these instructions.

5. Slide the batt er y latch t o the locked position. 6. T urn the comput er over again. Connect the ac power adapter and all cables. Replacing the SIM card Before you start, print these instructions. Y our comput er might require a SIM card to establish wir eless WAN connections.
5. Hold the new card with the metal contact facing upward, and insert the car d rmly into the slot until you hear a click. 6. Reinstall the batt ery back in place. See “Replacing the battery” on page 72. 7. T urn the comput er over again. Connect the ac power adapter and all cables.
4. L oosen the screw that secur es the cover of the slot, and then r emove the cover . 5. Remove the har d disk drive or solid-state drive by pulling out the tab. 6. Detach the side rubber rails from the hard disk drive or the side spacer r ails from the solid-state drive.
7. A ttach the side rubber r ails to the new har d disk drive or the side spacer r ails to the new solid-state drive. 8. Insert the hard disk drive or solid-state drive into the slot. 9. Slide the hard disk drive or solid-state drive rmly int o place.
10. Reinstall the cover of the slot, and tighten the scr ew. 11. Reinstall the battery . See “Replacing the batt ery” on page 72. 12. T urn the comput er over again. Connect the ac power adapter and all cables. Replacing the k eyboard Before you start, print these instructions.
5. Remove the scr ews that secur e the keyboar d. 6. T urn the comput er over and open the display . 7. P ush hard in the direction shown by the arrows 1 t o unlatch the fr ont side of the keyboard. The keyboard will be detached slightly . Chapter 6 .
8. C arefully lift the keyboard until you can see how it is connected. Hold the keyboard above the computer , and then detach the connector . Remove the keyboard. Installing the keyboard T o install the keyboard, do the following: 1. A ttach the connector .
2. Insert the new keyboard. Make sur e that the r ear edges of the k eyboard are under the fr ame. 3. P ush down the keyboard rmly and then slide the keyboard in the direction shown by the arr ows.
4. Close the comput er display, and turn the computer over . Reinstall the screws. 5. Reinstall the memory slot cover back in place. 6. Reinstall the battery . See “Replacing the batt ery” on page 72. 7. T urn the comput er over again. Connect the ac power adapter and all cables.
• Use either a PC3-10600 or a PC3-12800 DDR3 SDRAM memory module in your computer . If you install a memory module that is not supported by your comput er , the computer might beep, and the syst em might not start or might not work properly .
8. Pivot the memory module downward until it snaps int o place. 9. Make sure that the memory module is rmly xed in the slot and cannot be moved easily . 10. Reinstall the keyboar d. See “Replacing the keyboar d” on page 78. 11. Reinstall the battery .
6. Find the notch on the contact edge side of the new memory module you are installing. Attention: T o avoid damaging the memory module, do not t ouch its contact edge. 7. Make sure that the notch on the memory module aligns corr ectly with the key in the memory slot, then insert the memory module int o the socket at an angle of about 20 degr ees.
11. Reinstall the battery . See “Replacing the batt ery” on page 72. 12. T urn the comput er over again. Connect the ac power adapter and all cables. Checking the total amount of memory installed in your comput er T o make sure that the memory modules are installed corr ectly, do the following: 1.
5. If a tool for r emoving connectors is included in the package with the new card, use it to disconnect the cables from the car d. If no such tool is included, disconnect the cables by picking up the connect ors with your ngers and gently unplugging them.
8. Align the contact edge of the new PCI Express Mini Card with the corresponding socket contact of the computer . Note: If the new wir eless LAN car d has two connect ors, put the white cable in the cable pr otection tube.
10. Connect the cables to the new wir eless LAN car d. Be sur e t o attach the gr ay cable to the connector marked TR1 or Main on the car d, the whit e cable to the connector marked RO or TR3 (cent er), and the black cable to the connector marked TR2 or Aux .
5. If a wireless W AN car d is already installed, disconnect the cables. Note: Depending on the syst em conguration of your comput er , the card might have only one connect or .
8. Align the contact edge of the new wir eless WAN car d with the corr esponding socket. 9. Pivot the car d until you snap it into place. Secur e the car d with the scr ew. Note: Depending on the syst em conguration of your comput er , the card might have only one connect or .
13. T urn the comput er over again. Connect the ac power adapter and all cables. Replacing the backup battery Before you start, print these instructions. Chapter 7. Enhancing your computer This chapter provides instructions on installing har dware devices t o expand your computer capabilities. • “Finding ThinkP ad options” on page 95 • “Using.
1. Click the triangular icon in the Windows notication area t o show hidden icons, then click the Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media icon, and then stop the device. 2. Remove and insert the Ultrabay device as introduced in “Replacing the Ultrabay device” on page 71.
3. Insert the hard disk drive with the label facing upward as shown: Note: If your har d disk drive has a strap, be sur e not t o leave it under the drive. 4. Connect the har d disk drive to its connector . 5. Close the hard disk drive stopper . Chapter 7 .

Note: If your har d disk drive has a strap, be sur e not t o leave it under the drive. 4. Ensur e that the har d disk drive is connected rmly . Then put the cover lm back to place. 5. Close the hard disk drive stopper . 6. Insert the ThinkP ad 12.
Notes: If you install the secondary hard disk drive using hot swap or warm swap, and the hard disk drive is prot ected by a password, you cannot get access t o the drive right after inserting the adapt er into the bay . T o get access to it, do the following: 1.

Updating your system UEFI BIOS The Unied Extensible Firmware Int erface (UEFI) BIOS is a part of the system pr ograms that make up the basic layer of softwar e built int o your comput er . The UEFI BIOS tr anslates the instructions from other software layers.
This updating process can be done after normal working hours and on weekends, to save time and increase productivity . Users ar e not interrupt ed during normal working hours, and LAN trafc is kept t o a minimum. If a computer is turned on by the W ake on LAN function, the Network Boot sequence is used.
Flash update Y our network administrator can remot ely updat e the system pr ograms on your comput er fr om a management console. The following r equirements must be met: • Y our comput er must be started over the LAN. • Y our computer must be engaged in a Pr eboot eXecution Envir onment (PXE).

• When installing the hard disk drive, solid-state drive, or optical drive, follow the instructions shipped with your hardwar e, and apply pr essure only where needed on the device. • T urn off your computer if you ar e r eplacing the hard disk drive or solid-stat e drive.

2. While the computer is turned off, remove all power sources from the computer (battery and the ac power adapter). Hold down the power button for 10 seconds. Plug in the ac power adapter while keeping the battery out of the computer . If the computer does not turn back on, continue with step 3.
• Message : 0187: EAIA data access err or Solution : The access to EEPROM is failed. Have the computer serviced. • Message : 0188: Invalid RFID Serialization Information Area Solution : The EEPROM checksum is not correct (block # 0 and 1). The syst em boar d should be replaced, and the box serial number needs t o be r einstalled.
Solution : The thermal sensor has pr oblem. Shut down the computer immediately and have the computer serviced. • Message : This system supports only batteries specially designed for this specic syst em and manufactured by Lenovo or an authoriz ed builder .
If the problem persists, have the comput er serviced. • Problem : My screen goes blank while the comput er is on. Solution : Y our screen saver or power management might have been enabled. Do either of the following: – T ouch the T r ackP oint pointing device or the touch pad, or press a k ey t o exit the screen saver .
The network cable must be securely connected both to the E thernet connector of your comput er and to the RJ45 connector of the hub. The maximum allowable distance from the comput er to hub is 100 met ers. If the cable is connected and the distance is within acceptable limits but the problem persists, try a different cable.
Make sure that the wireless radio is enabled by double-clicking the Access Connections icon in the Windows notication area. F or Windows 7 operating system, check the Network Name (SSID) and your encryption information. Use the Access Connections pr ogram to verify this case-sensitive information.
Keyboar d problems • Problem : All or some keys on the keyboar d do not work. Solution : If an ext ernal numeric k eypad is connect ed: 1. T urn off the comput er . 2. Remove the e xternal numeric keypad. 3. T urn on the comput er and try using the keyboar d again.
6. Click the Monit or tab. Ensur e that the corr ect device driver name is shown in the adapter information window. 7. Click the Pr operties butt on. If you ar e prompt ed for an administr ator passwor d or conrmation, type the password or provide conrmation.
