Read this rst Be sure to follow the important tips given her e t o get the most use and enjoyment out of your computer . F ailure t o do so might lead to discomfort or injury, or cause your computer t o fail. Protect yourself from the heat that your computer generates.
Protect your comput er and data when moving it. Before moving a comput er equipped with a hard disk drive, do one of the following, and make sur e that the power switch is off or is blinking: • T urn it off. • P ut it in sleep mode. • P ut it in hibernation mode.
Conditions that requir e immediate action Products can become damaged due to misuse or neglect. Some pr oduct damage is serious enough that the product should not be used again until it has been inspect ed and, if necessary, repaired by an authorized servicer .

Chapter 1. P roduct overview This chapter pr ovides information about the locations of connectors, locations of important pr oduct labels, computer featur es, specications, oper ating environment, and pr einstalled pr ograms.
1 Built-in microphones (on some models) The built-in microphones capture sound and voice when used with an application pr ogram capable of handling audio. 2 Integrated camer a (on some models) Use the camer a to take pictures or hold a video conference.
10 Black button When the oper ating system is working normally, pr essing the black button launches the SimpleT ap progr am on the Windows 7 operating system or the Lenovo PC Device Experience pr ogram on the Windows 8 operating syst em.

3 Port replicator or docking station connector Connect your computer t o a supported docking station or port replicat or thr ough this connector to e xtend the computer capabilities when you are in your ofce or at home.
1 P ower jack Connect the ac power adapter to the power jack to pr ovide ac power to the computer and charge the battery . 2 E thernet connector Connect your comput er to a LAN thr ough the Ethernet connect or . 6 Video gr aphics array (VGA) connector Attach a VGA compatible monitor or pr ojector to your computer to display the computer output. P ower status indicators 1 Sleep status • Green : The computer is in sleep mode. • Blinking green : The comput er is entering sleep or hibernation mode, or is r esuming normal oper ation. 2 Battery status • Green : The batt er y charge level is 20% or more.

Accessing Lenovo progr ams on the W indows 8 operating system If your comput er is preinstalled with the Windows 8 oper ating system, you can access L enovo progr ams by doing either of the following: • Click the Lenovo QuickLaunch icon from the taskbar .
The Client Security Solution pr ogram pr otects your computer by securing client data and deecting security br each attempts. It also can help manage your passwords, recover a forgott en password, monitor security settings on your comput er , and suggest how t o enhance your comput er security .
• Mobile Broadband Connect The Mobile Broadband Connect progr am enables your comput er to connect to the mobile br oadband (3G) network through a support ed wireless WAN card. • Passwor d Manager The P assword Manager pr ogram aut omatically captures and lls in authentication information for Windows progr ams and W eb sites.

Enabling or disabling the wir eless featur es • Fn+F5 Enable or disable the built-in wireless networking features. Note: T o use this function, the following device drivers must be installed on your.
V olume and mut e buttons Adjust the sound volume level of the built-in speakers by using the following thr ee butt ons: 1 Speaker mute button 2 Volume control button 3 Micr ophone mute butt on If you mut e the sound and then turn off your comput er , the sound will r emain muted when you turn on your computer again.
Windows key 1 Windows key On the Windows 7 operating syst em, pr ess the Windows key t o open the S tart menu. On the Windows 8 operating system, pr ess the Windows key to switch between the curr ent workspace and the Start scr een. Y ou also can use the Windows key together with another key t o achieve other functions.

The T r ackP oint cent er button 3 , called the scr oll bar , enables you to scroll Web pages or documents in any direction with no need to use the gr aphic scr oll bars on the side of the window .
Note: If you r eplace the keyboar d, a new keyboard is shipped with the default cap. If you wish, you can keep the cap from your old keyboard and use it on the new one.
Disabling the UltraNav pointing device and using an external mouse If you attach an ext ernal mouse t o a USB connect or , you can use the e xternal mouse simultaneously with the T r ackP oint pointing device and the touch pad.
T o check for detailed battery status information, do the following: • F or Windows 7: Open the P ower Manager pr ogram and click the Battery tab. • F or Windows 8: Open the L enovo Support progr am and click Battery Health , or open the L enovo Settings progr am and click P ower .
Maximizing batter y life T o maximiz e the life of the battery, do the following: • Use the batt ery until the charge is completely deplet ed; that is, use the battery until the battery status indicator starts blinking or ange. • Recharge the battery complet ely before using it.
– F or Windows 7: Start the P ower Manager progr am and then click the P ower Plan tab. F or instructions on how t o start the P ower Manager progr am, see “ Accessing L enovo pr ograms on the Windows 7 operating system” on page 14.
DANGER Do not attempt to disassemble or modify the battery pack. Attempting to do so can cause an e xplosion, or liquid leakage from the battery pack. A battery pack other than the one specied by Lenovo, or a disassembled or modied batt er y pack is not covered by the warranty .
DANGER There is a danger of an e xplosion if the backup battery is incorr ectly placed. The lithium battery contains lithium and can e xplode if it is not pr operly handled, or disposed of.
Wireless W AN Wireless Wide Area Network (wireless WAN), using cellular networks for data tr ansmission, enables you to establish wireless connections over r emote public or private networks.
Attention: • If you want to use the wir eless features on an airplane, check the wireless services with the airline before boarding the airplane. • If ther e ar e restrictions on the use of comput er wireless featur es on an airplane, you need to disable your computer wir eless features befor e boarding.
• Access Connections gauge states: wir eless LAN – P ower t o the wir eless r adio is off or no signal. – P ower to the wir eless radio is on. The signal strength of the wir eless connection is poor . T o improve the signal str ength, move your computer closer t o the wireless access point.
– Signal level 1 – Signal level 2 – Signal level 3 Note: If you have trouble in making a connection, try moving your computer closer to your wir eless access point.
2. T urn on the e xternal monitor . 3. Change the display output location by pr essing Fn+F7. This enables you to switch between viewing output on the e xternal monitor , the computer monitor , or both monitors. Note: If your computer cannot detect the e xternal monitor , right-click on the desktop, then select Scr een resolution .

Using the Mini DisplayP ort connector Depending on the model, your computer might have a Mini DisplayP ort connector , a digital display interface for connecting various external devices, such as CRT monitors, LCD monitors, project ors, or even high-denition televisions.
1. Right-click on the desktop, and click Screen resolution . 2. Click the monitor -1 icon (for the primary display, the computer display). 3. Set the resolution for the primary display . 4. Click the monitor -2 icon (for the secondary display, the e xternal display).
Using an int egrated camera If your computer has an integr ated camer a, you can use the camer a to preview your video image and take a snapshot of your curr ent image. T o start the camer a, do the following: • F or Windows 7: Pr ess Fn+F6 t o open the Communications Utility settings window .

Chapter 3. Y ou and your comput er This chapter provides information about accessibility, comfort, and travelling with your computer . Accessibility and comfort Good er gonomic pr actice is important to get the most from your personal comput er and to avoid discomfort.

Head position : K eep your head and neck in a comfortable and neutr al (vertical, or upright) position. Chair : Use a chair that gives you good back support and seat height adjustment.
Assistive technologies Some accessibility t echnologies are available thr ough the Accessibility Options progr am. Depending on your oper ating system, the number of accessibility options available varies. In gener al, accessibility options enhance the way users with hearing, vision, or mobility limitations navigate and use their computer .
• External mouse, if you are accustomed to using one • Ethernet cable • Extra batt ery, charged • A quality carrying case that provides adequate cushion and prot ection • External stor age device If you are traveling to another country, you might want to consider taking an ac power adapt er for the country to which you are tr avelling.
Chapter 4. Security This chapter provides information about how t o protect your computer fr om theft and unauthorized use. • “ A ttaching a mechanical lock” on page 47 • “Using passwords”.
2. T ype the mast er hard disk password. Note: T o r eturn to the icon , press F1 again. If this icon is displayed, type a supervisor passwor d. P ower-on password Y ou can set a power -on password to help pr otect your computer against access by unauthorized users.

BitLocker uses a T rusted Platform Module to pr ovide enhanced pr otection for your data and to ensur e early boot component int egrity . A compatible TPM is dened as a V1.2 TPM. T o check the BitLocker status, go to Control P anel and click System and Security ➙ BitL ocker Drive Encryption .

If you forget your hard disk passwor d, L enovo cannot r eset your passwor d or r ecover data fr om the har d disk. Y ou must take your computer to a L enovo authoriz ed servicer or a marketing r epresentative t o have the hard disk drive r eplaced. Proof of purchase is requir ed, and a fee will be char ged for parts and service.
• Y our nger is very dry . • Y our nger is stained with dirt, mud, or oil. • The surface of your nger is very different fr om when you enr olled your ngerprint. • Y our nger is wet. • A nger is used that has not been enrolled.
Using and understanding rewalls If your system is preinstalled with a r ewall pr ogram, it pr otects against computer Internet security threats, unauthorized access, intrusions, and Internet attacks.
Chapter 5. Recovery overview This chapter provides information about the r ecovery solutions on computers preinstalled with the Windows 7 oper ating syst em or the Windows 8 oper ating system.
Creating recovery media Note: On the Windows 7 oper ating system, you can cr eate r ecovery media using discs or e xternal USB stor age devices. T o cr eate r ecovery media on the Windows 7 operating system, click Start ➙ All Progr ams ➙ Lenovo ThinkV antage T ools ➙ F actory Recovery Disks .
2. In the Rescue and Recovery main window, click the Launch advanced Rescue and Recover y arrow . 3. Click Back up your hard drive and select backup oper ation options.
Note: If the Rescue and Recovery workspace fails to open, see “Solving r ecovery problems” on page 64. 4. Do one of the following: • T o rescue les from your hard disk drive or fr om a backup, click Rescue les and follow the instructions on the scr een.
2. Repeatedly press and release the F12 key when turning on the comput er . When the Boot Menu window opens, r elease the F12 key . 3. In the Boot Menu window, select the USB har d disk drive as the rst boot device and pr ess Enter . The rescue medium starts.
Attention: If you need updated device drivers, do not download them from the Windows Updat e Web sit e. Obtain them from L enovo. F or mor e information, see “Making sure device drivers ar e current” on page 132.
Advanced startup options Advanced startup options enable you to change the startup settings of your Windows oper ating syst em, start the comput er from an ext ernal device, or restor e the Windows oper ating system from a system image. T o use the advanced startup options, do the following: 1.

Chapter 6. Replacing devices This chapter provides instructions on how to install or replace some har dware for your computer . • “Static electricity prevention” on page 67 • “Replacing the .
Note: If an unauthoriz ed battery is installed, the following message will be displayed: “The battery installed is not supported by this system and will not charge. Please replace the battery with the corr ect Lenovo battery for this system”. DANGER If the rechargeable battery pack is incorrectly replaced, there is danger of an e xplosion.
4. Insert a fully char ged battery until it clicks int o place. 5. Slide the battery latch to the locked position. 6. T urn the computer over again. Connect the ac power adapt er and all cables. Replacing a memory module Before you start, print these instructions.
3. Remove the batt ery. See “Replacing the battery” on page 67. 4. Loosen the scr ews 1 , then remove the cover 2 . 5. If the a memory module already is installed in the memory slot, pr ess out on the latches on both edges of the socket at the same time.
7. Make sur e that the notch on the memory module aligns corr ectly with the key in the memory slot, then insert the memory module int o the socket at an angle of about 20 degr ees. P ress it in rmly . 8. Pivot the memory module downwar d until it snaps int o place.
Replacing the har d disk drive or solid state drive Before you start, print these instructions. When r eplacing the drive, be sure to follow the pr ecautions. Attention: The hard disk drive or solid stat e drive is very sensitive. Incorrect handling can cause damage and permanent loss of data.
5. Remove the hard disk drive or solid stat e drive by pulling out the tab. 6. Detach the side rubber r ails from the hard disk drive or the side spacer rails fr om the solid state drive. 7. Attach the side rubber r ails to the new hard disk drive or the side spacer rails t o the new solid state drive.
8. Insert the hard disk drive or solid state drive into the bay, then slide it rmly into place. 9. Reinstall the cover of the bay 1 , then reinstall the screw 2 . 10. Reinstall the batt ery. See “Replacing the battery” on page 67. 11. T urn the computer over again.
4. Loosen the screws on the cover 1 , then r emove the cover 2 . 5. Remove the two scr ews that secure the keyboar d. 6. T urn the computer over and open the display . 7. Push hard in the dir ection shown by the arr ows 1 to unlatch the fr ont side of the keyboard.
8. Car efully lift the keyboard until you can see how it is connected. Hold the k eyboard above the computer , and then detach the connect or 1 . Remove the keyboard 2 .
2. Insert the keyboar d. Make sure that the front edges of the keyboard ar e under the fr ame, and then press the keyboard downwar d. 3. Slide the keyboard until it is secured in place. 4. Close the computer display, and turn the computer over . Reinstall the two screws.
5. Reinstall the memory slot cover and tight en the scr ews. 6. Reinstall the batt ery. See “Replacing the battery” on page 67. 7. T urn the computer over again.
4. Loosen the scr ews 1 , then remove the cover 2 . 5. If a t ool for removing connectors is included in the package with the new car d, use it t o disconnect the cables from the car d. If no such tool is included, disconnect the cables by picking up the connect ors with your ngers and gently unplugging them.
7. Remove the card. 8. Align the contact edge of the new PCI Express Mini C ard with the corr esponding socket contact of the computer . Note: If the new PCI Expr ess Mini Card has two connectors, as in the following illustr ation, put the white cable in the cable prot ection tube.
9. Pivot the car d until you can snap it into place by pressing the upper side of the connectors 1 , and secure the card with the screw 2 . 10. Connect the cables to the new PCI Expr ess Mini Card.
12. Reinstall the batt ery. See “Replacing the battery” on page 67. 13. T urn the computer over again. Connect the ac power adapt er and all cables.

8. Align the contact edge of the new card with the corresponding socket contact of the computer . Note: If the new PCI Expr ess Mini Card has two connectors, as in the following illustr ation, put the white cable in the cable prot ection tube.
10. Connect the cables to the new PCI Expr ess Mini Card. Be sur e t o attach the gr ay cable to the connector marked “TR1” on the car d, the whit e cable to the connector marked “RO” or “TR3” (center), and the black cable to the connector marked “TR2”.
2. Close the computer display, and turn the comput er over . 3. Remove the batt ery. See “Replacing the battery” on page 67. 4. Loosen the scr ews 1 , then remove the cover 2 . 5. If a t ool for removing connectors is included in the package with the new car d, use it t o disconnect the cables from the car d.
7. Remove the card. 8. Align the contact edge of the new wireless WAN card with the corr esponding socket. 9. Pivot the car d until you can snap it into place by pr essing the upper side of each connector 1 .
10. Connect the cables t o the new wireless WAN card. Note: Depending on the model, the marking for the connectors on your car d might look differ ent from the one shown in the illustration above. Be sur e t o attach the r ed cable t o the MAIN or M connector , and the blue cable to the AUX or A connect or .
4. Loosen the scr ews 1 , then remove the cover 2 . 5. If a t ool for removing connectors is included in the package with the new car d, use it t o disconnect the cables from the car d. If no such tool is included, disconnect the cables by picking up the connect ors with your ngers and gently unplugging them.
7. Remove the car d with the br acket. 8. Pull the card out of the br acket. 9. Insert the new card int o the bracket. 10. Align the contact edge of the new wireless WAN card with the corr esponding socket.
11. Pivot the car d until you can snap it into place by pr essing the upper side of each connector 1 . Secure the card with the screw 2 . Note: Depending on the syst em conguration of your comput er , the card might have only one connect or . 12. Connect the cables to the new PCI Express Half Mini car d.
14. Reinstall the batt ery. See “Replacing the battery” on page 67. 15. T urn the computer over again. Connect the ac power adapt er and all cables. Replacing the Serial Ultr abay Slim device T o r eplace the Serial Ultr abay Slim device, do the following: 1.
Y our comput er might require a SIM card to establish wir eless WAN connections. Depending on the country of delivery, the SIM card might already be installed in your computer or will be part of the shipping cont ents that came with your comput er .
Replacing the backup battery Before you start, print these instructions. DANGER If the backup battery is incorrectly replaced, there is danger of an e xplosion. The backup battery contains a small amount of harmful substances. T o avoid possible injury: • Replace only with a battery of the type recommended by L enovo.
7. Reinstall the k eyboard. See “Replacing the keyboard” on page 74. 8. Reinstall the batt ery. See “Replacing the battery” on page 67. 9. T urn the computer over again.

Chapter 7. Enhancing your computer This chapt er pr ovides information on installing devices and taking advantage of your comput er's high-technology featur es.
2. Replace the device following instructions in “Replacing the Serial Ultrabay Slim device” on page 92. Installing a secondar y hard disk drive into the Serial Ultr abay Slim bay Y ou can upgr ade the capacity of your computer by installing a secondary har d disk drive.
2. Insert the har d disk drive into the adapt er with the label facing upwar d. Note: If your har d disk drive has a strap, be sur e not t o leave it under the drive.
4. Close the hard disk drive stopper to secur e the har d disk drive in place. Notes: • Make sure that the har d disk drive is inserted tightly into the hard disk drive adapter . • Y ou cannot insert a har d disk drive for other ThinkPad comput ers into this ThinkP ad Serial Har d Drive Bay Adapter III.

Chapter 8. Advanced congur ation While it is important t o prot ect les, data, and settings that are on the har d disk drive, you also might need t o install a new operating system, install new device drivers, update your system UEFI BIOS, or recover pr einstalled softwar e.
– After installing the oper ating system, you should not change the initial UEFI/L egacy Boot setting in ThinkP ad Setup. The UEFI/L egacy Boot setting must be the same as it was when the Windows operating system image was installed. Otherwise, the operating syst em will not boot correctly .

– If your comput er uses discs as the recovery media, do not remove the disc fr om the drive until prompt ed to do so. • F or suspected hard disk drive issues, r efer to “Diagnosing problems” on page 137 prior t o calling the Customer Support Center .
T aking care of your computer Although your computer is designed t o function r eliably in normal work envir onments, you need to use common sense in handling it. By following these important tips, you will get the most use and enjoyment out of your computer .
• T urn off your computer if you ar e r eplacing the hard disk drive or solid state drive. • When r eplacing the primary hard disk drive or solid state drive, r eattach the cover of the drive slot. • Stor e your external and r emovable hard disk or optical drives in the appropriate containers or packaging when they ar e not being used.

2. While the machine is turned off, remove all power sour ces fr om the computer (battery and ac power). Hold down the power button for 10 seconds. Plug in the ac power while keeping the battery out of the computer . If the computer does not turn back on, continue to step 3.
Solution : Checksum of the supervisor passwor d in the EEPROM is not corr ect. The syst em board should be replaced. Have the comput er serviced. • Message : 0182: Bad CRC of Security Settings in EEPROM. Enter ThinkP ad Setup. Solution : Checksum of the Security settings in the EEPROM is not correct.
Solution : Neither the date nor the time is set in the computer . Set the dat e and time, using the ThinkPad Setup. • Message : 1802: Unauthoriz ed network car d is plugged in - P ower off and remove the network card. Solution : The mini PCI Expr ess network card is not supported on this computer .
– Restor e the system conguration t o what it was before your comput er enter ed hibernation mode. – If the memory siz e has been changed, r e-create the hibernation le. • Message : F an error Solution : Cooling fan has failed. Have the computer serviced.
2. If you still see only the cursor on the scr een, do the following: – If you have used the partition softwar e, e xamine the partition on the har d disk drive by using the software, and recover the partition if r equired.
Networking The following are the most common networking pr oblems: Ethernet problems • Problem : Y our computer cannot connect to the network. Solution : Make sur e that: – The cable is installed pr operly . The network cable must be securely connected both to the E thernet connector of your comput er and to the RJ45 connector of the hub.
A wireless LAN problem Problem : Y ou cannot connect t o the network using the built-in wireless network card. Solution : Make sur e that: • Y our wir eless LAN driver is the latest version. • your comput er is within r ange of a wir eless access point.
– When the T r ackP oint pointing device is kept pressed for a long time – When the temper ature changes • Problem : The T r ackP oint pointing device or touch pad does not work. Solution : Make sure that the T rackP oint pointing device or t ouch pad is enabled in the Ultr aNav Device Setting window.
3. Select Change display settings . Check whether the screen resolution is correctly set. 4. Click Advanced Settings . 5. Click the Adapter tab. Ensur e that the correct device driver name is shown in the adapter information window. Note: The device driver name depends on the video chip that has been installed on your computer .
Solution : Make sur e that: – The monitor information is correct and the appr opriate monitor type is select ed. Refer t o the solution to the above pr oblem.
• Problem : Recordings made using the micr ophone input ar e not loud enough. Solution : Make sur e that the Microphone Boost function is turned on and set by doing the following: 1. Open Contr ol P anel and click Har dware and Sound . 2. Click Sound .
Solution : Once the headphone is attached, the str eaming is automatically r edirected t o it. If you want to listen t o sound from the speakers again, be sur e to set those speakers as the default device. F or details, refer to the help information system for Realt ek HD Audio.
• Problem : The computer does not oper ate with a fully char ged batt ery pack. Solution : The surge prot ector in the batt ery pack might be active. T urn off the computer for one minute t o reset the pr otector; then turn on the comput er again. • Problem : The battery pack cannot be char ged.
c. Remove the battery . Refer to “Replacing the batt ery” on page 67. d. Remove the memory (SO-DIMM). Refer t o “Replacing a memory module” on page 69. e. Remove the PCI Expr ess Mini C ard. Refer to “Replacing a PCI Express Mini Car d for wir eless LAN/WiMAX connection” on page 78 .
– The battery is char ged. – The oper ating t emperatur e is within the acceptable range. Refer to “Oper ating environment” on page 13. If the battery is charged and the t emperature is within range, have the comput er serviced. • Problem : A critical low-batt ery err or occurs, and the computer immediately turns off.
Solution : On the Boot menu of ThinkPad Setup, make sure that the hard disk drive is on the Boot priority order list. If it is on the Ex cluded from boot order list, it is disabled. Select the entry for it on the list and press Shift+1 t o move it back t o the Boot priority order list.
Solution : Be sur e that the disc meets the standar ds for your country . Usually, a disc that meets the local standards is marked with a CD logo on the label. If you use a disc that does not meet these standards, we cannot guar antee that it will play, or that, if it does play, the sound quality will be good.
