ENGLISH 4 INTRODUCTION About this manual This manual mainly e xplains operations using the b uttons on the remote control. Y ou can also use the buttons on the control panel f or the same operations if the y hav e the similar or same marks. • On some discs, their actual operations ma y be different from what is e xplained in this manual.
ENGLISH 5 Installing the batter y When the controllable range or eff ectiveness of the remote controller decreases, replace the battery . 1 . Remove the battery holder . 1) Push out the batter y holder in the direction indicated by the arrow using a ball-point pen or a similar tool.
ENGLISH 6 Starting playback 1 Press PO WER to turn on the power . The lamps on the buttons on the unit light up . 2 Press OPEN on the unit. The loading slot cov er opens. DO NO T force the co ver open b y hand. 3 Insert a disc into the loading slot. The unit draws in the disc automatically .
ENGLISH 7 Listening with headphones 1 Connect the headphones to the PHONES jack on the unit. 2 While holding SHIFT ( S ), then press H/P V OL 5 or H/P V OL ∞ to adjust the headphones volume . DO NO T use the headphones while driving. It is dangerous to shut off the outside sounds while driving.
ENGLISH 8 Showing the on-screen bar Y ou can show the follo wing information on the screen while a disc is loaded. T o sho w the disc information, press DISPLA Y ( D )/ TIME . Each time you press the b utton, the follo wing on-screen bar appears in sequence.
ENGLISH 9 6 : Indicates whether the disc contains subtitles. (Ex.: When no subtitle is recorded on the disc. See page 10 for more details.) 7 : Current selected audio language and the total number of the audio languages recorded on the disc. (Ex.: “ENGLISH” is selected as the only recorded audio language on the disc.
ENGLISH 10 DVD PLA YBACK 3 Some D VDs contain se v eral audio languages, subtitles, and multi-angle vie ws. When you find the f ollowing marks on the D VD or its package , you can select these elements recorded on the D VD . Subtitles are recorded on the disc.
ENGLISH 11 T o erase the on-screen bar , press DISPLA Y ( D )/ TIME . Selecting audio languages While pla ying a disc containing audio languages (sound trac ks), you can select the language (sound) to listen to . • Y ou can set your f av orite audio language as the initial audio language shown on the screen.
ENGLISH 12 MENU-DRIVEN PLA YBACK Menu operations Menu-driven pla yback is possib le while playing back a D VD with menu-driven f eatures or a VCD with the PBC function. While playing a DVD: D VD discs generally ha ve their o wn menus or title lists. A Men u usually contains various inf or mation about the disc and playbac k selections.
ENGLISH 13 While playing a VCD: The Playbac k Control function (PBC) allows y ou to operate the VCD using menus . When you start playback, a men u will automatically appear on the screen. • A menu may be a list of items, divided screens , or some moving pictures .
ENGLISH 14 SEARCH FUNCTIONS Searching for a particular point Y ou can search for a par ticular por tion while playing a disc — F orward/Re v erse Search.
ENGLISH 15 Locating a particular point directly Y ou can use the following Search Modes to locate a par ticular por tion directly while pla ying a disc. • For D VD: Title Search, Chapter Search, and Time Search • For VCD and CD: T rack Search and Time Search 1 Press SEARCH MODE (M) to select Search Mode.
ENGLISH 16 REPEA T PLA YBACK Playing Repeatedly Repeat Play Y ou can repeat a chapter, tr ack, or disc. T o repeat pla yback, press REPEA T ( )/ A-B RPT while pla ying or pausing.
ENGLISH 17 When a CD is playing * : 2 While holding SHIFT (S), press REPEA T ( )/A-B RPT again to select the end point. The repeat mode indication changes as follo ws, and A-B Repeat begins. The unit automatically locates point A and star ts repeated playbac k of the portion between points A and B.
ENGLISH 18 SPECIAL EFFECTS PLA YBACK Slow-Motion Playback Y ou can enjoy slow-motion pla yback while pla ying a D VD or VCD . T o start Slo w-motion Playbac k, press SLO W while pla ying a D VD or VCD .
ENGLISH 19 Zoom Y ou can zoom up a par ticular por tion of the picture while playing a D VD and VCD . • Y ou can select the star t point of zoom and adjust how precisely the z oomed-up por tion is mov ed. (See page 27.) 1 Press ZOOM to zoom in to the picture.
ENGLISH 20 DVD DVD SETUP MENU Y ou can store the initial selection for subtitle languages, audio languages (sound), and other settings using the Setup Menu. • D VD Setup menu can only be display ed while a disc is not playing. Setting initial audio language Y ou can select the initial language for audio sound.
ENGLISH 21 DVD 4 Press Cursor ∞ (or 5 ) to select a desired language, then press ENTER. • T o use the original language on the disc, select “ORIGINAL. ” If a language y ou want is not listed on the screen, f ollow the procedure below; 1 Press 5 or ∞ to select “O THERS.
ENGLISH 22 DVD Setting initial disc menu language Y ou can select the initial language for the disc menu. Howe v er , in the follo wing cases, the disc menu will be display ed in the original language on the disc regardless of your setting. – If the language you ha ve selected is not recorded on the disc.
ENGLISH 23 DVD 3 Press ENTER. Digital Out selecting screen appears. 4 Press Cursor ∞ (or 5 ) to select an appropriate output, then press ENTER. • STREAM : Select this when connecting an amplifier or a decoder compatible with Dolb y Digital and with DTS Digital Surround.
ENGLISH 24 DVD 2 Press Cursor ∞ (or 5 ) to select “A UDIO , ” then press ENTER. A udio menu appears. 3 Press Cursor ∞ (or 5 ) to select “A UDIO DURING ¡ , ” then press ENTER. Sound on/off selecting screen appears. 4 Press Cursor ∞ (or 5 ) to select a desired setting, then press ENTER.
ENGLISH 25 DVD Setting monitor type Set the monitor type when you w atch a wide screen picture. • This setting takes effect only when pla ying back a D VD recorded with 16:9 wide screen video signal. T o go bac k to the previous screen during the procedure, press RETURN .
