AV1 Getting Started 1-3 Complementing its audio perfor mance, the AV1 features two broadcast-quality video switcher s. A wide-bandwidth component video switcher accepts analog component o r RGB video signals, while a composite and S-video sw it cher accepts high-quality NTSC, P AL or SECAM video signals.

AV1 Getting Started 1-5 REMOTE CONTROL BATTERY I NSTALLATION The remote control requires two AA batteries. The batteries should be re placed as need ed. Alkaline batteries, which last longer without leaking, are recommended. Wh en battery power is low , th e remote cont rol enters a low-voltag e cond ition, preventing it from op erating the AV 1 .

Basic Operation JBL Performa nce 2-2 FRONT-PANEL OVERVIEW The numbers in the fro nt-panel illustration corresp ond with the numbered items below . 1 STANDBY BUTTON Use the Standby button to activate or deactivate standby mode. The Standby button per forms no function when the AV1 is pow- ered off with the rear panel po wer switch.
AV1 Basic Operation 2-3 3 IR RECEIVER The IR Receiver receives in frar ed commands from the AV1 remote control. There are three associated LED s. • The amber LED blinks when a remote control command is received. • The red LED lights when the A/D converters are overloading.

The command matrix that beginning on page 2-10 indi- cates the commands remote control buttons per form when each command bank is active.

AV1 Setup 3-3 INPUT SETUP Selecting the SETUP men u INPUTS option prompts the select ion of the desired input (for example, DVD1). S electing an input opens the corresponding INPUT SETUP menu, which ca n be used to change input names, assign au dio and video input connectors, select preferred listening modes, and configure advanced settings.

Setup JBL Performa nce 3-6 ASSIGNING AUDIO & V I DEO INPUT CONNECTORS The AV1 has eight configurable inputs, each of which can be assigned to its eight digital audio, eight analog audio, five compos- ite video, five S-video or three component video input connectors.
AV1 Setup 3-7 DIGIT AL IN COAX-1 to 4, OPTICAL-1 to 4, NONE Opens the DIGI T AL I N menu, whic h assigns a digital audio input connector for the s elected input. The A V1 has eight configur able inputs, each of which can be assi gned to any of its eight digital audio input connectors.

Setup JBL Performa nce 3-10 ASSIGNING AUDIO & V IDEO INPUT CONNECTORS (continu ed) MANUAL -18dB to +12dB Provides manual adjustment of 2-channel analog audio inp ut levels. When manual adjustments are ma de, the A V1 automatically sets the ANLG IN L VL menu AUTO parameter to OFF and deactivates automatic input level adjustment.
AV1 Setup 3-11 LEVEL METERS Indicate fluctuating input lev e ls in the fro n t left (L) and fr ont right (R) channe ls for the select ed input. Th ese level m eters are also included on the ST A TUS menus, a llowing them to indicate input levels for both analog and digi tal audio input sources.

AV1 Setup 3-13 SELECTING PREFERRED LISTENING MODES The INPUT SETUP menus include three preferred listening mode selection parameters labeled 2-CH, DOLBY D, and DTS-ES. These parameters select a pr eferred listening mode for 2-channel, Dolby Digital and DTS(-ES ) input sources.

The AV1 automatically activates the selected listening mode whenever a new inp ut is selected or a new 2-cha nnel source is present.

The A V1 automatically acti- vates the selected listening m o de whenev er a new input is selected or a new DTS(-ES) source is present.

The IN PUT SETUP menu can be used to assign one digita l and one analog audio input con- nector for the selected input.
AV1 Setup 3-19 INPUT SELECT PAR AMETER SETTINGS The table below desc ribes INPUT SELECT parameter settings. DIGIT AL ANALOG AUTO The A V1 autom atically sets the INPUT SELECT parameter to DIGIT AL when the ANALOG IN parameter is set to NONE. • The AV1 sends the assigned digital audio input connector to the audio output connectors.
Setup JBL Performa nce 3-20 CONFIGURING ADV ANCED SETTINGS (continued) 2-CH ANLG BYP ON, OFF Allows 2-channel analog audio in put sources to bypass A/D conver- sion and internal processing. When ON, the AV1 passes analog audio input signals to the corresp onding audio output connectors.
AV1 Setup 3-21 S-VIDEO 16:9 AUTO, OFF Controls the passag e of anamorphic trigger signals present in some video sources. When set to AU TO, the A V1 allows anamorphic video input signals to pass thro ugh the S-video switch er , enabling compatible disp lay devices to automatically sw itch between anamorphic and non-anamorph ic display modes.
Setup JBL Performa nce 3-22 CONFIGURING ADV ANCED ZONE SETTINGS (continued) S-VIDEO OSD 4:3 ON, OFF Controls the appearance of the on-scree n display when the display device is connected to an S-vide o output connector . When ON, the display device shows th e on-screen display in a 4:3 aspect ratio* regardless of the incoming s ignal.
AV1 Setup 3-23 COMPONENT OSD ON, OFF Controls the appearance of the on-screen di splay when the di splay device is connected to the comp onent video output con nector . When ON, the display device s hows the on-screen display as a 480i video signal on a full blue screen background.
Setup JBL Performa nce 3-24 SPEAKER SETUP Selecting the SET UP menu SPEAKERS option open s the SPEAKER SETUP menu, which can be used to conf igure the audio outp ut connecto rs for the desired speaker setup, set speaker distances and calibrate output levels.
AV1 Setup 3-25 In general, low frequencies will be redirected from spea kers with the highest crossover points to s p e a ke r s w it h t h e lo w e s t c r o s sover points. Low- frequency signal s lower than the lowest cro ssover point will be re direc ted to the subwoofer .

When set to FULL, the AV1 sends a full-range audio output signa l to these connectors.

AV1 Setup 3-31 THX UL TRA2 SUB ON, OFF Indicates whether or not the su bwoofer connected to the audio output connector labeled Subwoofer is Ultra2 certified. Select ON if the connected subwoofer is Ultr a2 certified and OFF if the con- nected subwoofer is not Ultra2 certified.

AV1 Setup 3-33 THX SPEAKER SETUPS When the SPEAKER S ETUP menu THX SETUP option is selected, the THX SPEAKER SETUP message appears in the on -screen and front- panel displays.

AV1 Setup 3-37 CALIBRATING OUTPUT LEVELS Selecting the SPEAKER SETUP me nu LEVELS CALIBRA TION option opens the LEVELS CALIBRA TION menu, which is used to calibrate output levels fo r the audio output connectors. Calibration ensures that output levels co rrespond to THX referenc e levels (75dB) for input sources such as DVDs.
Setup JBL Performa nce 3-38 CALIBRA TING OUTPUT LEVELS (continued) Note: The A V1 auto matically sets volume level to +0dB whe n the internal noise test begins. A void adjustin g master volume level while the test is in progress to achieve a 75dB THX reference level (a 75dB SPL me ter reading).
AV1 Setup 3-39 EXTERNAL NOISE TEST Opens the SPEAKER LEVEL A DJUST menu, which is used to adjust output levels wh ile the ex ternal noise tes t is conducted. The exter- nal noise test requires an ex tern al calibration source, such as an audio calibration disc.
Setup JBL Performa nce 3-40 SPEAKER LEVEL ADJUST SPEAKER LEVEL ADJUST is used to adjust output levels during the internal and exte rnal noise tests. FRONT LEF T & RIGHT -18.0dB to +12. 0dB Sets the output leve ls for the speakers connected to the audio out- put connectors labeled Front L/R.
AV1 Setup 3-41 BASS PEAK LIMITER Opens the BASS PEAK LIMITER menu, which is use d to set ampli- tude limits for all speakers to wh ich low frequencies are redirected, including the subwoofer . The AV1 is equipped with an internal limiter that pre vents low-fre- quency output sign als from excee d ing a designated level.

AV1 Setup 3-47 ON-SCREEN DISPLAY SETUP Selecting the D ISPLA Y SETUP menu ON-SCREEN DIS PLAY option opens the ON-SCREEN DISPLAY menu, which is used to customize the on-screen display . AV1 Setup 3-49 BACKGROUND ON, OFF Activates and deacti vates the me nu backgrou nd. When ON, on- screen display menus appear over a solid blue or gray background (depending on the display device ) . W h e n O F F , o n - s c r e e n d i s p l a y menus appear over the video input si gnal.
