21 3 FREQUENCY SETTING ■ When fi r st applying po wer (CPU resetting) Bef ore fi rst applying power , make sure all connections required f or your system are complete by ref erring to chapter 2. Then, reset the transceiver using the f ollow- ing procedure.

A UTO TUNING STEP FUNCTION (AM/FM only) When selecting AM or FM, the quick tuning step is au- tomatically selected by the auto tuning step function. 24 3 FREQUENCY SETTING ■ Adv anced tuning functions QUICK TUNING STEP The operating frequency can be changed in kHz steps (1, 5, 9 or 10 kHz selectable) f or quick tuning.
■ T win PBT operation The twin PBT (P assband T uning) function electronically narrows the receiv er ’ s IF passband widths to reduce interf erence. Moving both [TWIN PBT] controls to the same position shifts the IF . - The LCD shows the passband width graphically .
26 4 RECEIVE AND TRANSMIT ■ A uto notch function The auto notch function automatically attenuates more than 3 beat tones, tuning signals, etc., e ven if they are mo ving. The auto notch functions in SSB mode only . q Select SSB mode. w Push [A UTO NO TCH] to tur n the auto notch func- tion ON.
The receiv ed CW audio pitch and monitored CW audio can be adjusted to suit your pref erences (300 to 900 Hz) without changing the operating frequency .
The fi lter selection s witches the IF passband width as shown in the tab le at right. The fi lter selection is automatically memorized in each mode. When an optional fi lter is installed, set the optional fi l- ter setting in set mode. (p . 55) Optional fi lters are not selected by def ault.
When you fi nd a DX station on 21.025 MHz/CW and the station is picking up stations tr ansmitting slightly up from 21.025 MHz. q Push [RIT] and [ ∂ TX] to turn both the RIT and ∂ TX functions ON. w Rotate [RIT/ ∂ TX] to find the DX station ’ s receiv e fre- quency .
30 4 RECEIVE AND TRANSMIT Dualwatch monitors 2 frequencies with the same mode simultaneously . During dualwatch, both frequencies should be on the same band because the bandpass fi lter in the RF cir- cuit is selected f or the main readout frequency .
31 4 RECEIVE AND TRANSMIT Split frequency operation allows y ou to transmit and receiv e in the same mode on two diff erent frequen- cies. The split frequency operation is basically per- f or med using 2 frequencies on the main and sub readouts. F ollo wing is an e xample of setting 21.
32 4 RECEIVE AND TRANSMIT When you fi nd a DX station, an important considera- tion is how to set the split frequency . When you push the [SPLIT] s witch for 2 sec., split fre- quency operation is turned ON, the sub readout is equalized to the main readout frequency and enters standby f or transmit frequency input.
33 4 RECEIVE AND TRANSMIT The monitor function allows y ou to monitor your tr ans- mit IF signals in any mode through the speak er . Use this to check v oice characteristics while adjusting transmit tones . (p . 54) The CW sidetone functions re- gardless of the [MONIT OR] s witch setting.

36 4 RECEIVE AND TRANSMIT The memor y ke yer memorizes and can re-transmit 4 CW ke y codes f or often-used CW sentences, antenna types, etc. T otal capacity of the memor y k ey er is 55 characters in each memory channel. • Programming the memory ke yer q Push [CW] to select CW mode.
37 4 RECEIVE AND TRANSMIT This function allows y ou to displa y the relative strengths of signals around the center frequency . The span can be set to ± 12.5 kHz, ± 25 kHz, ± 50 kHz and ± 100 kHz. Ideal f or monitoring band conditions in an instant.
38 4 RECEIVE AND TRANSMIT A repeater ampli fi es receiv ed signals and retransmits them at a diff erent frequency . When using a repeater , the transmit frequency is shifted from the receiv e fre- quency by an offset frequency .
■ Antenna tuner operation The internal automatic antenna tuner matches the transceiv er to the connected antenna automatically . Once the tuner matches an antenna, the v ar iable ca- pacitor angles are memor ized as a preset point f or each frequency range (100 kHz steps).
• AH-3 HF A UT OMA TIC ANTENNA TUNER The AH-3 matches the IC-756 to a long wire antenna more than 3 m/10 ft long (3.5 MHz and abov e) or more than 12 m/40 ft long (1.8 MHz and abov e). • See p . 18 for the tr ansceiver and AH-3 connection. • See the AH-3 instruction manual for AH-3 installation and antenna connection details.
41 5 MEMOR Y OPERA TION ■ Memory channels The transceiv er has 101 memory channels. The mem- or y mode is v er y useful f or quickly changing to often- used frequencies. All 101 memor y channels are tunable which means the programmed frequency can be tuned tempor ar ily with the tuning dial, etc.

45 5 MEMOR Y OPERA TION All memor y channels (including scan edges) can be tagged with alphanumeric names of up to 10 charac- ters each. Letters (capitals), numerals , some symbols ( ⁄ , ?, M ) and spaces can be used.
46 5 MEMOR Y OPERA TION • Writing frequencies and operating modes into memo pads Y ou can simply wr ite the accessed readout frequency and operating mode b y pushing [MP-W]. When you write a 6th frequency and operating mode, the oldest written frequency and operating mode are automatically erased to make room f or the new set- tings.

49 6 SCANS Fine scan functions as programmed or ∂ F scan, b ut scan speed decreases when the squelch opens and does not stop . The scanning tuning step shifts from 50 Hz to 10 Hz while the squelch opens. q Select the scan screen from the star t up screen by pushing [ (F-4) SCAN].

51 7 CLOCK AND TIMERS The transceiv er has a built-in 24-hour cloc k with power-off and po wer-on timer functions . This is useful when logging QSO ’ s and so on.
52 7 CLOCK AND TIMERS The transceiv er can be set to tur n OFF automatically after being activ ated via the power-on timer . The pow er-off per iod can be set to 5 – 120 min. in 5 min. steps. q If the star t up screen is not selected (if [F-5] ’ s func- tion is [EXIT]), push [F-5] one or more times to exit.
53 8 SET MODE ■ Set mode description Set mode is used f or programming infrequently changed values or conditions of functions . This trans- ceiver has a le vel set mode, displa y set mode, timer set mode and miscellaneous (others) set mode.
Tx tone (Treble) This item adjusts the treble le v el of the transmit audio tone in SSB/AM mode from – 12 dB to +12 dB in 2 dB steps. 54 8 SET MODE Tx tone (Bass) This item adjusts the bass le vel of the transmit audio tone in SSB/AM mode from – 12 dB to +12 dB in 2 dB steps.
55 8 SET MODE Power-ON timer set This item sets the power-on time . See p . 51 for details . Time (now) This item sets the current time f or the b uilt-in 24-hour clock. See p . 51 for details . ■ Timer set mode 15:00 Push [ (F-4) SET] to enter the time.
56 8 SET MODE Beep (band edge) A beep sounds when an operating frequency enters or e xits an amateur band. This functions independent of the con fi rmation beep setting (above). The volume le vel can be set in le v el set mode. (p . 54) Beep (confirmation) A beep sounds each time a s witch is pushed to con- fi r m it.
57 8 SET MODE FM split offset (HF) This item sets the offset (diff erence betw een tr ansmit and receive frequencies) f or the quick split function. Howe ver , this setting is used f or HF bands in FM mode only and is used to input the repeater offset f or an HF band.
58 8 SET MODE Tuner (PTT start) T uning of the internal antenna tuner can be star ted automatically at the moment the PTT is pushed after the operating frequency is changed (more than 1% from last-tuned frequency).

When “ ON ” is selected, changing the frequency , op- erating mode , etc. on the IC-756 automatically changes those of connected transceiv ers (or re- ceivers) and vice v ersa.
