Make sure you understand all the saf ety messages. Know how to operate all the controls. You f eel well and are in good physical and mental condition.
Not wearing a helmet increases the chance of serious inj ury or death in a crash. Be sure you and your passenger always wear a helmet, eye protection, and other protective apparel when you ride.

Bright-colored and ref lective clothing can help make you more noticeable in traf f ic. Avoid loose clothes that could get caught on any part of your motorcycle.

41 Preparat ion Starting & Stopping the Engine Basic Oper ation & Riding Always f ollow the proper starting procedure described below. For your saf ety, avoid starting or operating the engine in an enclosed area such as a garage.

44 How to Stop the Engine Starting & Stopping the Engine Basic Oper ation & Riding Normal Engine Stop To stop the engine, shif t into neutral and turn the ignition switch OFF. The engine stop switch should normally remain in the RUN position even when the engine is OFF.
shifting pattern 45 Shif ting Gears Basic Oper ation & Riding As a general rule, shif t while moving in a straight line. Close the throttle and pull the clutch lever in completely bef ore shif ting. Improper shif ting may damage the engine, transmission, and drive train.
46 Shif ting Gears Basic Oper ation & Riding Shif ting Up: Shif ting Down: Avoid downshif ting to help slow your motorcycle when engine rpm is high. Downshif ting when engine speed is near its allowable maxim um may over- rev the engine and cause possible damage.
47 Braking Basic Oper ation & Riding Applying the brakes too hard may cause the wheels to lock and slide, reducing control of your motorcycle. If this happens, release the brake controls, steer straight ahead until you regain control, then reapply the brakes more gently.
48 Braking Basic Oper ation & Riding When possible, reduce your speed or complete braking bef ore entering a turn. Avoid braking or closing the throttle quickly while turning. Either action may cause one or both wheels to s lip and reduce your control of your motorcycle.

If you can’t park on a paved s urf ace, make sure the ground surf ace is f irm, especially under the side stand. If you must park on a hill, leave the transmission in gear and position the rear tire against the curb at a 45 degree angle.

Riding with a helmet attached to the holder can interfere with the rear wheel or suspension and could cause a crash in which you can be seriously hurt or killed. Use the helmet hol der only whi le parked. Do not ride with a hel met secured by the holder.
