T hi s spreads t h e f orces of a crash over t he st rongest bone s in your upper body. If the seat belt t ouch es or crosses your n eck, or i f it crosses your arm instead of your shoul der, you n eed to adjust t he s eat belt a nch or heig ht.

If you a re pr egnant , the be st w ay t o prot ect y ourself and y our unborn child w hen driv ing or riding in a vehi cle is t o always wear a se at belt, and keep t he lap part of t he belt as low a s possible a cross t he hips.
If they do, they could be v ery ser iously injur ed in a crash. A pa ssenger w ho is not wea ring a sea t belt dur ing a cr ash or eme rgency st op can be t hrown aga inst t he inside of t he vehic le, aga inst ot her occ upant s, or out of t he vehic le.
Y our seat belt syst em includes la p/ shoulder belt s in a ll seat ing posit ions. T he f ront sea t belt s ar e also equipped w ith a utoma tic sea t belt te nsioners.
T he la p/shoulder be lt goe s over your s houlder, a cross y our chest , and a cross your hips. To f as ten the be lt, in se rt the la tch plat e int o the buckle , then t ug on the belt t o make sure t he buckle is lat ched ( see page f or how t o proper ly posit ion the belt ).
For adde d prote ction, t he f ront se at belt s ar e equipped w ith a utoma tic seat belt t ensioners. W hen act ivat ed, the tensioners im mediately t ig ht en the be lts to h el p ho ld the dri ver and a f ront passe nger in posit ion. T he tensi on ers can be ac t i vated during a collision in w hich the f ront airb ags .
If a seat belt is worn du ring a crash, it must be r eplace d by your dea ler. A belt t hat ha s been w orn during a crash may n ot pro vide the s ame l evel of pr otec tion in a subs equent cr ash. T he de aler should a lso inspect t he anchor s f or da mage a nd repla ce them if needed.

The total tim e f o r in f l ati on an d def lation is one-t ent h of a sec ond, so f a st t hat most occupant s are not aware that the airbags dep lo yed u ntil they see t hem lying in t heir l a ps. Af ter a cras h, yo u m ay s ee what looks lik e smoke.

T he driver’ s ad vanced f ro nt airbag system includes a seat position sensor under t he seat . If t he sea t is t oo f ar f orwa rd, t he a irbag w ill inf late wit h l ess f orce, regardless of the severity of t he i mpact .
CONT INUED T o ensure t hat t he passenger’s advan ced f ro nt ai rbag s ystem will wor k proper ly, T his include s: A r ear pa ssenger pushing or pulling on t he back of t he f r ont passenger’s seat . Moving t he f r ont sea t f orcibly back again st cargo on th e s eat or f loor behind it .
T here will be some d elay bet ween t he moment t he pass enger mov es int o or out of the a irbag deploy ment p a t ha n dw h e nt h e i n d i c a t o rc o m e s on or goe s of f . A f ront sea t pa ssenger should not use a cushion or a nothe r object as a backrest.
If t he impact is on t he passenger’s side, t he passenge r’s side c urta in airb ag wil l in f l ate even if t he re are no occupant s on tha t s ide of t he vehicle. T o get t he be st pr otec tion f rom t he side cur tain air bags, occupa nts shoul d wear their seat belts and sit upright a nd well ba ck in t heir s eat s.
Whe n you tur n the ignit ion swit ch to t he ON ( II) posit ion, this indica tor comes on brief ly then g oes of f . T his t ells you t he syst em is wor king proper ly. If t he indica tor comes on or f l a s h e so na n do f f w h i l ey o ud r i v e .
Thi s i nd ic ator al er ts y ou tha t th e passe nger’s f ront ai rbag has been shut of f because we ig ht sensor s det ect about 65 lbs ( 29 kg) or less (t he w eight of an inf ant or sma ll child) on t he f ront pass enger’s sea t. It does there is a p roble m wi th the ai rb ag.
If w ate r or anot her liquid soa ks int o a sea t- back , i t can p revent the side airbag cutof f system f r om working proper ly. T ampe ring could ca use t he airba gs t o deploy, possibly caus ing ver y serious injur y. T oget her, a irbags a nd seat b elts pro vide t he best prot ect ion.
− − − Child ren dep end on adul t s to protect them. However, despi t e their best int entions, ma ny adult s do not k now how t o protect child passengers. If you have chi ldren , or ever need t o driv e wit h a ch ild in your v ehicle, be sure t o rea d this sect ion.
− If t he v ehicle sea t is too f ar f orward, or the chil d’s head is t hrown f orwa rd during a c ollision, an in f latin g f ront ai rbag c a n strike the child w ith en ough f orc e to kill or very se rio usly in jure a small chil d.

In sea ting pos itions a nd vehic les not equipped w ith L A T CH , a L A T CH- compat ible ch ild seat c an be ins ta lled using a sea t be lt. What ever type of seat you choo se, to prov ide proper prot ect ion, a child seat should meet thr ee requir ements: L ook f or F MV SS 213 or CMV SS 213 on t he box.

Push and pull the child seat f or war d and f r om side-t o-side t o verif y t hat i t is se cure en ough to sta y upright dur ing normal dr iving maneuv ers.
A chi ld seat with a tether can be inst alled in a ny sea ting pos ition in the ba ck se at. Each rea r out side sea ting pos ition has a n anchor age point on t he sea t- b ac k, an d the ce nte r s eati ng p o si tio n has a n anchor age point in t he ceiling near t h e tai lg at e.

Does t he shoulder belt cr oss b etw ee n the ch il d’ s n ec k a nd arm ? Is t he lap pa rt of t he belt a s low a s possible, t ouching th e child’s thi gh s? Will t he child be a ble t o st ay .
A c hild may cont inue using a boost er sea t unt il t he t ops of t heir e ars ar e ev en wi th the top o f the veh ic le’ s or b o o ste r’s se at-b ack . A ch il d o f thi s height should be t all enough t o use t he lap/shoulder belt w ithout a b o o ste r s eat.
T his could re sult in serious neck injur ies during a crash. Th i s c o u l d cause ve ry ser ious injuries during a crash . It also increases t he chan ce t hat t he child w ill slide under t he belt in a cr ash and be injure d. If they do, they could be v ery ser iously injur ed in a crash.
