T he rest of this section gives more det aile d inf or mat ion a bout how you can maximiz e your sa f et y. R emember, ho wever, that no saf et y system ca n prevent all injuries or deaths that can o ccu r i n a se vere crash, even when seat belts are proper ly w orn and t he air bags deploy.

Once your seat is adjusted correctly, rock it back and f orth to make sure t he se at is locke d in posit ion.

If you a re pr egna nt , t he best w ay t o prot ec t yours elf a nd your unborn child w hen dr iving or riding in a vehi cle i s to al ways wear a seat bel t, and keep the lap part of the belt as low a s poss ible a cros s t he hips .
If your han ds or arms are c lo se to an airb ag c over, they co ul d be in jure d if t he air bag inf la t es. Objects on the covers marked ‘‘SR S AIR BA G’’ could int er f er e w it h t he pr oper opera t ion of the a irba gs or be propelle d inside t he ve hicle a nd hurt someone if t he a irba gs inf la t e.
T he seat belts use the same monitor ing syst em a s t he f ront airb ags. The sy stem may no t work proper ly under t hese condit ions: T his syst em monitors t he f ront sea t belt s. If y ou turn the i g ni tio n swi tch to th e ON ( II) pos it ion bef or e your sea t belt is f ast ened, the beeper will sound and t he indicat or will f la sh.
T he lap and s ho ul der be lt g oe s o ver your s houlder, acr oss y our c hest , and a cr oss y our hips . For saf ety, you shou ld check the condit ion of y our sea t belt s regula rly . Pull ea ch belt out f ully , a nd look f or f ray s, cut s, burns, and w ear . Duri ng a frontal c rash, yo ur seat b elt res t ra ins your lowe r body and tor so, and t he f ront a irba g helps prot ec t you r head an d c hes t. A lt hough bot h airba gs nor mally inf lat e wit hin s plit second of each ot her, it is possible f or only one airb ag to de pl oy.
Y our f ront a irba gs a re a lso dua l- t hreshold a irba gs. A irbags wit h t his f eature have t wo deplo yment t hresholds th at depe nd on whe t her or not t he occupa nt is w ear ing a sea t belt . If t he oc cupant ’ s belt is , t he a irba g will deploy a t a slight ly lower threshold, because the occupant would need extra prot ec t ion.
T he d river’s ad vanced f ron t airbag system includes a seat position sensor under t he sea t . If t he se at is t oo f ar f orw a rd, t he air bag will inf lat e wit h less f orce, regardless of the severity of t he im pact.
Whe n t he a irba g is t ur ned of f , an indicat or in t he c ent er of t he dashboa rd w ill come on indicat ing passenge r a irbag ‘ ‘OF F’ ’ ( see pa ge ).
Only one air bag w ill deploy during a side impa ct . If the impa ct is on t he passenger’s side, the passenger ’s side ai rbag wil l dep loy even if t here is no passe nger. T o ge t t he be st prot e ct ion f r om t he sid e airb ags, f ront s eat oc cup a nts shoul d wear t heir seat belts and sit upright a nd we ll bac k in t heir sea t s.
In a m oderate to severe si de im pact, sensors wi ll d etect rapid decel eration and signa l t he c ont rol unit t o i ns tantl y i nflate th e s id e cu rtai n airb ag o n the d river’ s o r the passenge r’s s ide of t he v ehicle.
Thi s i nd ic ato r al erts you that the passe nge r’s f ront ai rbag has been shut of f beca use weight sensors det ect a n inf a nt or s mall c hild may be in t he f r ont passenge r’s s eat . It does mean there is a prob lem wi th th e air b ag .
Your ai rbag sys tems are vi rtuall y maint ena nce f ree , and t he re a re no parts you can saf ely s ervice. Howe ver, you m ust h ave you r vehi cle s ervi ced i f : If no one is riding in t he f ront sea t , t he a irba g will be aut oma t ica lly shut of f .
T oge t her, air bags and seat b elts pro vid e the be st prot ec t ion. T a mper ing could c ause t he a irba gs t o deploy , possibly caus ing ve ry serious injury . Th i s co u l d m a k e th e driv er’ s se at posit ion sensor or t he f ront passe nger’s weight sensor s inef f ec t ive.
− − − Child ren dep end on adults to protect them. However, despi te t heir best int ent ions, ma ny a dult s do not know how t o protect child passengers. If you have children , or ever need to driv e w it h a child in your ve hicle, be sure t o r ea d t his sect ion.
− Whenever possibl e, lar ger childre n should sit in th e ba ck seat , on a boos ter sea t if needed, and be pr operly res t ra ined w it h a sea t belt ( see page f or import ant inf orma t ion a bout prot ec t ing lar ger childre n).

− L e av ing childr en w it hout adult supe rv ision is illegal in most states an d Canad ian p rovi nc es, and can b e very haz ardo us. For exam ple, i nf ants and sm all c h i l d r e nl e f t i nav e h i c l e o nah o t day can d ie f rom heatstroke.
A n inf a nt must be proper ly res t ra ined in a re ar -f a cing, r eclining child sea t unt il t he c hild re ache s t he sea t make r’s weight or height limit f or the seat an d the chi ld i s at leas t one year ol d. Only a re ar -f a cing c hild sea t pr ovide s proper suppor t f or a ba by’s hea d, neck, and ba ck.
Of t he di f f erent s eats avai lab le, we recomme nd t hose t ha t hav e a f ive- poi nt harness system as sho wn. In any of t hese sit uat ions, we str ongly r ecommend t ha t you inst all t he child sea t dire ct ly be hind t he f ront passenger’s s eat , move the seat as f ar f orward as n eeded , an d leave i t unoccupied.
In sea t ing posit ions and v ehicle s not equipped w it h L A T CH, a L A T CH- compat ible child se at c an be inst a lled using a sea t belt . What ever t ype of sea t you choo se, to prov ide pr oper prot ect ion, a c hild seat should meet three requir ement s: L ook f or F MV SS 213 or CMVSS 213 on the bo x.

T he aut o door lock ing f ea t ure has two o r th ree p os si bl e se ttin g s, depending on t he t ra nsmission t ype (A /T or M/T ): Make sure t he shif t lever is in Park (P) , an d clo se the dri ver’s door. Turn the i gn iti on s wi tch to th e ON (II) posit ion.
Set the p arking brake. P u s ha n dh o l dt h ef r o n t o f t h e mast e r door lock swit c h on t he driv er’ s door . Y ou w ill hea r a clicking sound, and a f t er about 5 sec on ds, yo u wil l he ar an other clicking sound. R ele ase t he sw it ch, a nd t ur n t he i gn iti on s wi tch to th e LOCK (0) posit ion w ithin 5 se conds.
Open the dri ver’s doo r. On veh i cl es wi th a u to ma ti c tr ansmission, make s ure t he shif t leve r i s i n Park (P). Turn the i gn iti on s wi tch to th e ON (II) posit ion. Set the p arking brake. P u s ha n dh o l dt h ef r o n t o f t h e mast e r door lock swit c h on t he driv er’ s door .
Turn the i gn iti on s wi tch to th e ON (II) posit ion. Make sure t he shif t lever is in Park (P) , an d clo se the dri ver’s door. Set the p arking brake.
