Preparat ion Starting & Stopping the Eng ine Basic Oper ation & R iding Always f ollow the proper starting procedure described below. For your saf ety, avoid starting or operating the engine in an enclosed area such as a garage.
Starting Proce dure Starting & Stopping the Eng ine Basic Oper ation & R iding Any Air Temperature The engine will not start if the throttle is f ully open (because the electronic control module cuts of f the f uel supply). This motorcycle has a fuel-injected engine with an automatic choke.
− 55 Flooded Engine Bank Angle Se nsor Igni tion Cut-of f Sy stem Starting & Stopping the Eng ine Basic Oper ation & R iding If Y our Engine Quits or W on’t Start , If the engine f ails to start af ter repeated attempts, it may be f looded w ith excess f uel.
How to Stop the Engine Starting & Stopping the Eng ine Basic Oper ation & R iding Normal Engine Stop To stop the engine, shif t into neutral and turn the ignition switch OFF. The engine stop switch should normally remain in the RUN position even when the engine is OFF.
shifting pattern 57 Shif ting Gears Basic Oper ation & R iding Learning when to shif t gears comes with experience. Keep the f ollowing tips in mind: Close the throttle and pull the clutch lever in completely bef ore shif ting. Improper shif ting may damage the engine, transmission, and drive train.
Shif ting Gears Basic Oper ation & R iding Shif ting Up: Shif ting Down: Avoid downshif ting to help slow your motorcycle when engine rpm is near its allowable maximum (near the tachometer red zone). In this situation, the rev limiter in the engine ignition control module may not prevent excessive engine speed which could damage the engine.
Braking Basic Oper ation & R iding As a general rule, the f ront braking system provides about 70 percent of total stopping power. For f ull braking ef f ectiveness, use both the lever and pedal sim ultaneously. Using both braking systems will stop your motorcycle f aster with greater stability.
Braking Basic Oper ation & R iding To slow or stop, apply the brake lever and brake pedal smoothly, while downshif ting to match your speed. Gradually increase braking as you f eel the brakes slowing your speed. The increase in engine compression f rom downshif ting will help slow your motorcycle.
Braking Basic Oper ation & R iding Your ability to brake in a turn and to brake hard in an emergency s ituation are important riding skills. We s uggest attending a Motorcycle Saf ety Foundation experienced rider training course (page ) to retain these skills.
Combined ABS Basic Oper ation & R iding Braking This model is equipped with Combined ABS (Combined Anti-lock Brake System). When the ignition switch is turned ON, the system perf orm s a self -analys is and when the vehicle speed reaches 6 mph (10 km /h) the system starts to operate and remains on while riding.
Braking Basic Oper ation & R iding In some situations , a motorcycle with Combined ABS may require a longer stopping distance to stop on loose or uneven surf aces than an equivalent motorcycle without Combined ABS.
Combined ABS Indicator Basic Oper ation & R iding Braking When Combined ABS does not f unction, the brakes work like a conventional braking system. On conventional braking systems, operating the f ront brake lever applies the f ront brake and operating the rear pedal applies the rear brake.
Braking Basic Oper ation & R iding If the Combined ABS indicator lights or f lashes and remains on while riding, stop the motorcycle in a saf e place and turn of f the engine. Turn the ignition ON again. The indicator should come on, and go of f af ter you ride the motorcycle at a speeds above 6 mph (10 km/h).
Parking Basic Oper ation & R iding Cata lyti c Conv erter Look f or a level parking area.
