3 INTRODUCTION Introduction Thank you for choosing Harman Kardon! With the purchase of a Harman Kardon A VR 7000 you are about to begin many years of listening enjoyment. T he A VR 7000 has been custom designed to provide all the excitement and detail of movie sound tracks and every nuance of musical selections .
4 SAFETY INFORMA TION Safety Information Important Safety Information V erify Line V oltage Before Use Y our A VR 7000 has been designed for use with 120-volt AC current. Connection to a line volt- age other than that for which it is intended can create a safety and fire hazard and may damage the unit.
5 FRONT P ANEL CONTROLS 1 Main P ower Switch: Press this button to apply power to the A VR 7000. When the switch is pressed in, the unit is placed in a Standby mode , as indicated by the amber LED 3 surrounding the System P ower Control 2 . This button MUST be pressed in to oper- ate the unit.

Before using the remote , it is important to remember to press the Device Control Selector button bc that corresponds to the unit you wish to operate .

System Installation After unpacking the unit, and placing it on a solid surface capable of supporting its weight, you will need to mak e the connections to your audio and video equipment.

17 INST ALLA TION AND CONNECTIONS Installation and Connections External Audio P ower Amplifier Connections If desired, the AVR 7000 may be connected to optional, external audio power amplifiers or used with equalizers or speak er systems that require connection between the preamp and amplifier sections of a receiver .
18 SY STEM CONFIGURA TION System Configuration When all audio , video and system connections have been made , there are a few configuration adjustments that must be made . A few minutes spent to correctly configure and calibrate the unit will greatly add to your listening experience .
19 SY STEM CONFIGURA TION System Setup Once the speak ers have been placed in the room and connected, the remaining steps in the setup process are to program the A VR 7000’ s bass management system for the type of speak ers used in your system, calibrate the output levels , and set the delay times used by the surround sound processor .
20 SY STEM CONFIGURA TION System Configuration the settings for the first input, many settings may be duplicated for the remaining inputs . It is also a good idea to set the configuration data in the order these items are listed in the Main Audio Setup Menu, as some settings require a specific entry in a prior menu item.

26 OPERA TION Operation Surround Mode Chart MODE FEA TURES DELA Y TIME RANGE DOLBY DIGIT AL Available only with digital input sources encoded with Dolby Digital data. It provides Center: 0 ms – 5 ms up to five separate main audio channels and a special dedicated Low F requency Effects Initial Setting – 0 ms channel.
27 OPERA TION Operation programs and standard stereo progr ams. In all, a total of ten listening modes are available on the A VR 7000. Selection of a surround mode is based on per- sonal taste , as well as the type of program source material being used.
28 OPERA TION Operation example , DTS bitstreams will cause the unit to switch to DTS decoding, and Dolby Digital bit- streams will enable Dolby Digital decoding. When the unit senses PCM data, as is present from CDs and LDs , the unit will allow the appropriate surround sources to be selected manually .
29 OPERA TION Operation 5. When a Dolby Digital or DTS source is play- ing, it is not possible to make an analog record- ing using the T ape ‚ and VID 1 h record outputs . However , the digital signals will be passed through to the digital audio outputs ‡ .
30 OPERA TION Operation Output Level T rim Adjustment Normal output level adjustment for the A VR 7000 is established using the test tone, as outlined on page 23. In some cases, however , it may be desirable to adjust the output levels using program material such as a test disc, or a selection you are familiar with.
31 ADV ANCED FEA TURES Advanced F eatures T he A VR 7000 is equipped with a number of advanced features that add extr a flexibility to the unit’ s operation. While it is not necessary to use these features to operate the unit, they provide additional options that you may wish to use .

34 PROGRAMMING THE REMO TE Progr amming the Remote T he A VR 7000 is equipped with a powerful remote control that will control not only the receiver’ s functions , but also most popular brands of audio and video equipment, including CD players , cassette decks , TV sets, cable boxes , VCRs , satellite receivers and other home-theater equipment.
35 PROGRAMMING THE REMO TE Progr amming the Remote Learning Codes In addition to using codes from the remote’ s internal code library , the AVR 7000’ s remote is able to “learn” codes from remotes that may not be in the code library .
Programmed Device Functions Once the A VR 7000’ s remote has been pro- grammed for the codes of other devices , press the appropriate Input or Video Selector c to change the remote from controlling the A VR 7000 to controlling the additional product.

Press either the AV R b or the TV Device Control Selector , depending on which system’ s volume control you wish to have attached for the punch-through mode . Note that the red light under the AV R button or Device Control Selector will blink twice and then go out to confirm the data entry .
