4. PROPERL Y SECURING THE CHILD RESTRAINT IN THE VEHICLE using a seat belt designed to r estrain a child restraint or by using LA T CH . Many seat belts are NO T safe to use with this child r estraint, even though they can easily be threaded thr ough or around the child restraint! V ehicle seat belt system MUST hold child restraint secur ely .
• SERIOUS CRIPPLING INJUR Y OR DEA TH can r esult if infant faces front of vehicle . The American A cademy of P ediatrics recommends that childr en should remain r ear-facing for as long as possible, but be at least one y ear of age befor e being positioned forward-facing .

7.1 V ehicle Seat Loca tion Requirements • Children ar e safer when properly restr ained in rear vehicle sea ting positions. Whenever possible secur e the child restraint in the cent er position of the seat directly behind the front seats .

7.4 F or Built-in Harness Only • Lap Belts - Manually adjusted when buck led, the belt is tightened manually by pulling on the fr ee end. • C ombination Lap/Shoulder Belt with Locking Latch Plate - Onc e it is buck led, this type of belt has a latch plate that will not allow the lap por tion of the belt to loosen.

United States F ederal Motor V ehicle Safety Standards ha ve defined a new system for installing child r estraints in vehicles. The system is called LA T CH . LA T CH stands f or : L ow er AN chors and T ether for CH ildr en. LA T CH in the v ehicle consists of a top tether anchor point and two low er anchor points.
NO TE: Some vehicle manufacturers have lo wer maximum weight ratings f or LA T CH anchors, so y ou must consult your v ehicle owner ’ s manual or call the vehicle manufacturer to c onfirm the limits on your vehicle ’ s LA T CH anchors .
8.2 LA T CH S ystem LA T CH consists of a permanently attached low er anchor belt and a top tether strap . ONL Y use LA T CH in a seating position rec ommended by vehicle manufacturer . LA T CH lo wer vehicle anchor points are defined as 11 inches from the c e nter of one LA T CH anchor to the cent er of another LA T CH anchor .
Y ou must car efully follow the instructions provided b y your vehicle manufacturer , in addition to the inf ormation in this manual. Befor e proceeding be sur e you hav e read and understood, “7.0 Choosing an Appropriate V ehicle Seat Loc ation” on pages 22-26.

Check your v ehicle owner ’ s manual f or the tether anchor location(s). If your vehicle is not equipped with a t ether anchor , it may be possible to install one.
