1. Introduction The AT-AR236E ADSL Ethernet & USB Combo Router is the perfect high-speed WAN bridge/router. This full -featured product is specifically designe d to connect to the Inte rnet and directly connect to your local a rea network via high spee d 10/100 Mbps Ethernet.

2. Your gateway at a glance The AT-AR236E ADSL Ethernet & USB Combo Router h as several ports an d LEDs. Let’s take a look at them. 2.1 Ports and buttons Reset and Restore to Factory Defaults: The restore to factory defaults feature will set the ADSL Router back to its factory default configurat ion.

4. Setting up your ADSL Router This section will guide you thro ugh your ADSL Router ’s configuration. Th e ADSL Router is shipped with a standard PPP configuration. 4.1 Log into your ADSL Router To configure your ADSL Router, op en your web br ow ser.
4.2 Quick Start The first screen (Figure 2) that appears (after th e log in scre en) is the Quick Start screen. Depending on the country that you reside in, some profile s had been preset for the VPI/VCI and type of encapsulation. For exampl e, if you resi de in New Zealan d, click on the button for New Zealand and then click Next.
4.3 Setup (for advance user) From this screen the u ser can setup th e ADSL Router (configure the LAN and WAN connection(s), configure the advanced config urati on options within the ADSL Router (secu.
4.4 Configuring the WAN Before the gateway will pass any data between the LAN interface(s) and the WAN interface, the WAN side of the modem must be configured.

Following is a description of the different option s: a. Username: The username for the PPPoA access; this is provided by your DSL service provider or your ISP. b. Password: The password for the PPPoA access ; this is provided by your DSL service provider or your ISP.
4.4.1.3 PPPoE Connection Setup PPPoE is also known as RFC 2516. It is a meth od of encapsulat ing PPP packets over Ethernet. PPP or Point-to-Point protocol is a method of establishing a network connection/session between network hosts. It usually provides a mechanism of a uthenticating users.

4.5 Configuring the LAN By default, your ADSL Router has DHCP server (LA N side) enabled. If you al ready have a DHCP server running on your ne twork, you mus t disa ble one of the two DHCP servers ; if you plug a second DHCP server into the network, you will expe rience network errors and the net work will not function normally.
In addition to the DHCP server feature, the AD SL Router sup ports the DHCP relay function. When the ADSL Router is configured as DHCP se rver, it assigns the IP addresses to the LAN clients.
The hostname can be any alphanume ric word that does not contain spaces. The domain name is used in conjunction with the host name to uni quely identify the gateway. To access the ADSL Router’s web pages th e user can type 192. 168.1.1 (the default IP addre ss) or type mygateway.
4.6 Advanced (for advance user only) The ADSL Router support s a host of advanced features. For basic ADSL Ro uter functionality, the user does not need to utilize these advanced features. The f eatures help with routing, security, port configuration, and plug a nd play capability.
4.6.2 Port Forwarding Using the Port Forwardi ng page, you can provide local services (for exam ple web hosting) for people on the Internet or play Internet game s. When users send this type of request to your network via the Internet, the ADSL Router will forward those request s to the appropriate PC.
4.6.3 Advanced Security In the presence of the firewall, anonymous Internet traffic is blo cked. Using the advanced security features, you can redirect this traffic to a dedi cate d computer on your local network (DMZ) or open the access from the Internet to t he ADSL Router' s management port s (web, telnet).
4.6.3.2 Enable Web from WAN Enabling the Web from WAN on your local network allows Web reque sts that come from th e Internet to be re-routed to a We b Server that is on a different sub net. This is different that the Web server rule that is co nfigurable via the port-forwardin g page.
4.6.6 MAC Address Filters The MAC filtering mechanism provide s a way for the users to define rules to allow/deny fram es through the bridge based on sou rce MAC address, destination MAC addre ss and/or frame type.
Note: The MAC filter table contains 3 hidden rul e s. These rules a re entered automatically by the system to ensure the user does not "lock" them out of the system. The first rule allows any an d all ARP frames through the system. The secon d rule allows all IPv4 frames with the destination MAC address of the bridge to go through.

At the system commands page, click on Save All . 4.6.8 Static Routing If the ADSL Router is connected to more than on e network, you may need to set up a stati c route between them.
4.6.9 Dynamic Routing Dynamic Routing allows the ADSL Router to aut omatically adj ust to physical changes in the network. The ADSL Router, using the RI P protocol, determines the network packets’ route based on the fewest number of hops bet ween the source and the destination.
4.7 Tools The ADSL Router supports a host of tools that will allow you to cu stomize and debug your ADSL Router. 4.7.1 System Commands To make the changes permanent you need to click on Tools (at the top of the page) and select System Commands . The following command s are used to configure the gateway: a.
4.7.3 Update Firmware You can remotely upgrade the A DSL Router’s fi rmware, cli cking on Update F irmware und er the Tools page. This will bring up the screen shown in Fi gure 19. The upgrade file shall be in *.img format. To upgrade the firmware, click browse, find the firmwa re file to download.
4.7.4 Ping Test Once you have your ADSL Router configured, it i s a good idea to ma ke sure you ca n ping the network. You can get to the Ping page und er the Tools title, by cli cking on Ping Test.
4.8 Status The Status section allows you to view the Status/S tatistics of different connections and interfaces 4.8.1 Network Statistics Select to view the Statistics of di fferent interfaces - Ethernet/USB/DSL. 4.8.2 Connection Status Select to view the Status of different connections.
4.8.6 System Log You can display the ADSL Ro uter’s log by going u nder the Status title, click S ystem log. From here you can view all lo gged information. Depending upon th e severity level, this logged info will generate log reports to a remote host (if remote log ging is enabled).

Check to see that the power LED is green and than the network ca bles are installed correctly.
5.3 The DSL Link LED continues to blink but does not go solid 1. This mean s that the DSL line is t rying to train but for some re ason it cannot establish a valid connection. The main cause of this is th at you are too far away from the central office.
