Introduction Introduction W elcome Y our EPSON Stylus ® COLOR 640 pr inter is the ideal output device f or small of fice or home printing. Y ou can pr int anything from r epor ts and resumes to photos and g reeting cards with great r esults.

3 S ystem Requirements T o use your printer and its software with a PC, your system should hav e: ■ An IBM ® compatible PC with at least a 386/25 MHz (f or Windows 3.1x), 486/25 MHz (f or Windo ws 95 or Windows NT ® 4.0), or 486/66 MHz (for Windo ws 98) processor (Pentium ® pr ocessor recommended) ■ Windo ws 3.

About Y our Soft ware 6 About Y our Software The EPSON Stylus COLOR 640 CD-R OM includes all the software you need f or photo-quality output: ■ Y our printer dr iv er r uns your printer and lets you control ho w your documents look. Y ou can’t use your printer without it.
7 Y ou also ha ve a CD-R OM containing Broderbund ® The Print Shop ® Premiere Edition. Y ou can vie w your electronic EPSON Stylus COLOR 640 Manual from the CD-R OM or you can copy it to y our hard drive. Adobe ® Acrobat ® Reader installs automatically if it is not already on y our system.

11 Printing a Memo Here are the basic steps f or printing a document on letter size paper , for e xample if you want to print a memo or resume. For details on adv anced print settings, see your electr onic EPSON Stylus COLOR 640 Manual . 1. Make sure y our pr inter and computer ar e tur ned on.
12 5. Make sure y our EPSON Stylus COLOR 640 pr inter is selected. 6. If your application’ s Print dialog bo x contains a Proper ties button, click it and go to step 7. If you see a Setup , Printer , or Options button, click it. Y ou see another dialog box that contains the Proper ties button.
13 9. Click the P aper ta b at the top of the dialog box if you need to c hange the paper size, number of copies, or page orientation. 10. Click OK until you see the Print dialog box a gain. 11. Click OK to start pr inting. After a moment, the Progress Meter (Despooler in Windows 3.
Printing a Photograph Here are the basic steps to print a photogr aph. F or more details on advanced settings, see your electronic EPSON Stylus COLOR 640 Manual . 1. Make sure y our pr inter and computer are tur ned on. 2. Make sure y our paper is against the r ight edg e guide and that the left edge guide is snug against the left paper edge.
15 5. Make sure y our EPSON Stylus COLOR 640 printer is selected. 6. If your application’ s Print dialog box contains a Proper ties button, clic k it and go to step 7. If you see a Setup , Pr inter , or Options button, click it. Y ou see another dialog box that contains the Properties button.
16 8. Change the Media T ype to Photo P aper . (If you are using a different type of paper , see “Selecting the Correct Media T ype” on page 19.) 9. Set the Mode option to A utomatic. The pr inter software automaticall y analyzes y our image data and selects the correct settings.
17 11. Click the P aper tab to chang e the paper size, number of copies to pr int, or pag e or ientation. If you loaded EPSON 4 x 6 inch Photo P aper , c hange the paper size to Photo P aper 4 x 6 in . 12. Click the La yout tab (not available in Windows 3.
18 13. Click OK to close the printer software and return to y our application’ s Print dialog box. 14. Click OK to start printing. After a moment, the Progress Meter (Despooler in Windo ws 3.1) will appear and sho w the prog ress of your print job. Y ou can cancel , pause , or restart your print job as necessar y .
19 Selecting the Correct Media T ype Follow the guidelines in this ta ble when selecting the Media T ype setting for y our paper . There are more detailed media loading guidelines in y our electronic EPSON Stylus COLOR 640 Man ual .
Maintenance 20 Maintenance Cleaning the Print Head Caution: Don’t use the cleaning sheets that may be included with your special media; they may damage the printer . If your printed image is une xpectedly light or faint, or dots are missing from the imag e, you ma y need to clean the print head.
21 Using the Head Cleaning Utility Follow these steps to run the utility: 1. Make sure the printer is turned on but not pr inting, and that the black and color ink out lights are off. If either ink out light is on, you must r eplace the ink cartridge befor e cleaning the print head.
22 6. Make sure paper is loaded in the printer and clic k Pr int nozzle check patter n . Then click Ne xt . The nozzle check pattern prints on your printer; see page 23 f or instructions on e xamining the nozzle check pattern. 7. If your print quality has impro ved, click Finish .
23 Examining the Nozzle Check Pattern Examine the nozzle c heck patter n after printing it. It should look something like this: Each stagger ed hor izontal and str aight vertical line should be complete, with no gaps in the dot pattern. If your pr intout looks okay , you’ re done.
24 Replacing an Ink Cartridge When a black or color ink out light f lashes, the indicated car tridge is lo w on ink. This is a good time to make sure y ou hav e a new cartridge. When the light stays on, the cartr idg e is empty and y ou need to replace it.
25 Removing an Empty Ink Cartridg e Y ou can replace a cartr idg e when the black or color ink out light is either f lashing or on. Not e: If you press the cleaning button when neither ink out light is flashing or on, the printer cleans the print head as described on page 2 2.
26 Installing the New Cartridge Once you ha ve removed the empty cartridg e, you’ re read y to install the new one. Follow these steps: 1. Remove the ne w ink cartr idge from its pac kage. 2. Remove onl y the yellow part of the tape seal on the top of the car tridge.
27 4. Press do wn the ink car tr idg e clamp until it loc ks in place. W arning: If ink gets on your hands, wash them thoroughly with soap and water . If ink gets into your eyes, flush them immediately with water . 5. If you need to r eplace the other ink cartr idge, remov e it as described in “Removing an Empty Ink Cartridge” on pag e 25.
28 Replacing an Outdated Ink Cartridge If an ink cartridge is more than six months old, you may need to r eplace it. If your printouts don’t look as good as they used to and print quality doesn’t improve after cleaning and aligning the print head, tr y replacing one or both car tridges.
29 Aligning the Print Head For best results, use EPSON ink jet paper whenever you check the print head alignment. If your printouts contain vertical banding or jagged v er tical lines, you may need to align the print head. T o use the print head alignment utility , your printer must be connected to a local port, not through a network.
30 T ransporting the Printer If you w ant to mo ve y our printer , you need to prepar e it for transportation and repac k it in the or iginal box. Follow these steps: 1. T ur n on the printer and wait until the print head locks in the far right position.

F ir st see “Diagnosing Problems” to help deter mine what the problem ma y be. Then see “Problems and Solutions” on page 34 for solutions to common setup and softw are problems.
The power light is on when the printer is on and ready to print. The power light flashes when the printer is receiving a print job or performing a maintenance operation such as cleaning a print head. When the paper out light comes on , your paper r an out or is incorrectly loaded.
33 Running a Printer Check Y ou can r un a printer check to determine whether the problem comes fr om the printer itself or some other source. ■ If the results are satisf actor y , the problem lies in softw are settings, the interf ace ca ble, or your computer .
34 Problems and Solutions Here are some basic tr oubleshooting tips if you ha ve any pr oblems setting up your printer or pr inting. Y ou can also turn to “T roubleshooting, ” in y our electronic manual or look in y our pr inter software online help.
35 If you need help with the creative software on your CD-ROM . . . ■ F or installation instr uctions, see the Start Her e card or page 7. ■ F or assistance using the creativ e or Inter net software, contact the company that produced it. F or contact information, see page 42.
36 Problems Getting Good Print Quality If your printout has horizontal banding . . . ■ Clean the pr int head (see page 20). ■ Make sure the Media T ype setting matches the paper you loaded (see pag e 19). ■ Make sure the printable side of the paper is face up.
37 If your printout is blurry or smear ed . . . ■ Check the thic kness le ver position. If it’ s in the + position, your printer is set f or thicker paper or env elopes and y our imag e ma y smear . For most paper s, set the thickness lev er to the 0 position.
38 If your printout contains incorrect colors or some of the colors ar e missing . . . ■ Make sure the Ink setting is set to Color f or color images. ■ Clean the print head (see page 20). ■ Make sure the ink cartridges aren’ t low on ink. If an ink out light is f lashing, replace the ink cartridge (see page 24).
39 If your printout is grainy . . . ■ T r y using a higher quality paper . ■ Run the Print Head Alignment utility (see page 29). ■ If you are printing a photograph, y ou may need to increase the photogr aph’ s resolution or print it in a smaller size.
40 Uninst alling Printer Software If you need to uninstall and then r einstall your pr inter softwar e, follow the steps in this section. Windows 95, Windows 9 8, and Windows NT 4.

45 6. After the software installation is complete, tur n on your printer . IMPORT ANT: After you turn on y our pr inter , you ma y see a screen telling y ou that Windo ws has detected your printer and asking you to install a driver diskette. If you see this screen, AL W A YS select Cancel .

47 Configuring for a Windows Network If your computer is on a Windows 95 or W indow 98 netw ork and you want other users to share the printer connected to it, you need to: 1. Set up the system connected to the printer (host system) so the printer can be shared.
