chapter 1 G ETT ING S TART ED Congratulations on purchasing a Compaq iP AQ H3000 W i ndows Powered Pocket PC. Due to the s i ze and capabilities of your iP AQ H3000 Pocket PC, you can keep your most important business a nd personal inf ormation up-to-date and close at hand.
This reference guide describes your iP AQ H3000 Pocket PC hardware, provides a n over- view of the programs on your iP AQ H3000, and e xplains how to conne ct your iP AQ H3000 to a computer, a network, or the Internet. For instructions on setting up your iP AQ H3000, see the Getting Started car d.

If you are currently using a W indows CE-ba sed Palm-size PC and want to transfer your data to your iP AQ H3000 Pocket PC , follow this upgrade procedure: 1. Install Microsoft ActiveSync 3. 1 on your computer . For information on installing ActiveSync, see the booklet ac companying the ActiveSync CD.
chapter 2 B ASIC S KIL LS Learning to use you r iP AQ H3000 Pocket PC is eas y . This chapter describes the basic con- cepts of us ing and customizing your iP AQ H3000 Pocket PC. Item Component Function 1 Stylus Allows you to tap or write on the s creen.
3 Alarm/C harge Light Serves as both a batter y charge indicator a nd a visual alarm indi cator . • Flashing green: Notification alarm signal. • Flashing amber: Battery is char ging.
Item Component Function 1 Communications Port Connects your iP AQ H3000 to t he cradle or auto- sync c able. 2 Reset Button Lets you res et your iP AQ H3000. For more inf or- mation, see “ Res et the iP AQ H3000 and Clear Mem or y ” in A ppendix A.
Y our iP AQ H3000 comes with either a cradle or auto-sync cable, and an AC adapter . This allows you to re char ge your iP AQ H3000, as well as synchr onize the information b e tween your iP AQ H3000 and a computer using ActiveSyn c. For m ore information on s ynchroni- zation, see ActiveSync Help on your computer .
Y our iP AQ H3000 contains a r echargeable Lithium Polymer battery that is rechar ged each time you place your iP AQ H3000 in the cradle and c onnect the cradle to a n external power source with the AC adapter . Y ou never need to replace the battery .
Y our iP AQ fe atures the iP AQ Expans ion Pack System, which allows you to personalize the appear ance of your iP AQ H3000 or add extr a functionality . iP AQ Style Pac ks offer a range of s tyles to cus tomize your iP AQ , while Expansion Packs, such as the Compact- Flash Ca rd, or PC C ar d Expansion P ack, let you add extra features.
Slide the Expansion Pack down and off your iP AQ H3000. The optional C om paq iP AQ CF Card E xpansion Pack s upports T ype I and T ype II Com- pactFlash cards. The C ompactFlash slot a llows you to ins tall storage cards for backup and storage of data a nd applications.
2. Push the card, connector-side first into the slot until it stops. 1. Close all applications on your iP AQ H3000 that have open f iles on the C ompactFlash card. 2. Lever the CompactFlash card out of the slot us ing a fingernail. • Y our iP AQ H3000 automatically recognizes a wide range of CompactFlash cards approved for use with A ctiveSync.
Y our iP AQ H3000 has a s tylus for s electing items and enter ing information. T o use the stylus, press and hold the s tylus release button while pulling the stylus upward out of its compart ment. T o r eplace t he st ylus, ju st insert it ba ck into the com partm ent, th en push it until it clicks into pl ace.
When you turn on your iP AQ H3000 fo r the first time each day (or after 4 hours of inactiv- ity), you’ll s e e the T oday screen. Y ou can also display it by tapping then To d a y . On th e T oday screen, you can see at a glance important inf ormation for the day .
Y ou c an swit c h from one pr ogr am to another by s electing it from t he m enu. (Y ou can customize which programs you s ee on this menu. For information, s ee “ Adjus ting Set- tings ”, later in this chapter .) Y ou can also use QStart to switch between programs.
The following table contains a partial list of pr ograms that ar e on your iP AQ H3000. Look in the Compaq CD and the Extras folder on the ActiveSync CD for additional programs that you can i ns tall onto your iP AQ H3000. Icon Program Description Calenda r Keep track of your appointments and create meet ing reques ts.
The na vigation ba r is l ocated a t the t op of the scre en and displays the title of the active program and cur rent time. I t also allows you t o switch to programs and close s creens. Use the comm and bar at the bot tom of the screen t o perf orm ta sks in progr a ms.
W ith pop-up menus , you ca n quickly choose an a ction for an item. For example, you can use the pop-up menu in the contact list to quickly delete a contact, make a c opy of a con- tact, or se nd an e-mail message to a contact. T he actions in the pop-up me nus vary from program t o program.
Y ou have several options for entering new inf ormation: • Enter typed text in the input panel by us ing the soft keyboard or Character Recognizer . • W rite or draw pictures directly on the s creen. • Speak into your iP AQ H 3000 microphone to record a message.
When you us e the input panel, your iP AQ H3000 anticipates the word you are typing or writing and dis plays i t above the input panel. When you tap t he displayed word, it is inserted into your text at the insertion point. T he more you use your iP AQ H3000, the more words i t learns to anticipate.
In any pr ogram that accepts writing, s uch as the Not e s program and the Notes ta b in Cal- endar , Contacts, and T asks, you can use your stylus to wr ite direc tly on the screen. W rite the way you do on pa per . Y ou can edit and format what you’ ve written and convert the informa tion to te xt a t a la ter ti me.
Y ou can cut, copy , and paste written text in the s ame way you work with typed text: tap and hold the s elected words then tap an editing command on the pop-up menu, or tap the command on the Ed i t m e nu.
If t he conversion is incor rect, you can select dif ferent wor ds from a l ist of alternates or return to the original wr iting. T o do so, tap and hold the incorrect wor d (tap one word at a time). On the pop-up menu, tap Alt ernates . A menu w ith a list of alterna te words appears.
Y ou can draw on the sc reen in the same way th a t you wr ite on the s creen. The dif ference between writing and drawing on the s creen is how you s elect items and how they c an be edited. For example, selected drawings can be r esized, while writing cannot.
In any pr ogram where you c an write or draw on the screen, you can also quickly c apture thoughts, reminders, and phone numbers by r ecording a message.
The Find feature on your iP AQ H3000 helps you qui c kly locate inf ormation. On the menu, tap Find . Enter the text you want to f ind, select a data type, then tap Go to start the sea rch. Y ou can cus tomize your iP A Q H3000 by adjus ting iP AQ H3000 s etti ngs and installing additional software.
Password se curity is provided to help protect against unauthorized use of your i P AQ H3000. For immediate protection, Compaq recommends s etting up the pa ssword security through the Passwo rd utility in the Sett ings of your iP AQ H3000 a s soon as possible.
Programs added to your iP AQ H3000 at the factory are stored in R OM (read-only mem- ory). Y ou cannot r emove or modify this software, a nd you’ll never acc identally lose ROM contents. Progr ams and data f iles added to you r iP AQ H3000 after factory ins tallation are stored in RAM (random access memory).
Using F ile Exp lorer on your iP AQ: 1. T ap , Pr ograms , File E xplor er , and l ocate the program (tap the folder list, labeled My Document s by default, then My D e vic e to see a list of all folders on your iP AQ). 2. T ap and hold the program and tap Cu t on the pop-up menu.
When you are wor king with your iP AQ H3000 and using battery power , you can monitor the charge held in the battery by using the Power window . T o conser ve battery power , your iP AQ H3000 automatically powers off whenever it is idle for a continuous peri od of time.
The backlight on your iP AQ H3000 lets you view text and graphics clearly whether you'r e indoors or outdoors, in a dim study or at a brightly lit worksite. Y ou can manually c hange the backlight setting on your iP AQ H3100 Ser ies Pocket PC by pressing the QM enu button and tapping B acklight .
1. Press the QMenu button, then tap B ackli ght , P r op ert ies . 2. Use the drop-down menus to set the amount of idle time before the bac kl ight turns of f when your i P AQ is using battery power and external power . QStar t allows you to quickly access pr ograms on your i P AQ Pocket PC.
Customizing your iP AQ Pocket PC is both convenient and easy when you use the QMenu and the QUtilities . The QMenu and Q U tiliti es let you quic kly acce ss several important setting contr ols. The QMenu als o lets you s witch between, or clos e, open a pplications.
Y ou can us e the Fil e Explorer to find files on your iP AQ and to organize these files into folders. Press the QMenu button, then t ap Fil e E xpl or er . The Self T est utility within QUtiliti es activates a debugging and system diagnostic tool. Use this tool to verify any problems that you may have exper ienced on your iP AQ.
3. Press the QMenu button, then tap QUtilities , then Self T est . 4. T ap the chec k boxes to select the items you want to test, then tap Next . 5. T ap Start . Y our iP AQ will reset ( unless you have dis abled this option) , and the test will start automatically .
The Vo l u m e utility provides an easy way to adjust the v olume of your iP AQ H3000. 1. Press the QMenu button, then tap Vo l u m e . - or- T ap , Setting s , System , then Sounds & Reminder s . 2. Adjust t he volume level on the sli de r . 3. T ap OK to save the new setting.
T o avoid losi ng your data in the event t hat your iP AQ Pocket PC is lost, stolen, or bec omes defective, Compaq recommends per iodic backups to t he computer or a CompactFlash card. Depending on your usage, you may want to pe rform a backup as of ten as once a day .
4. Press the QMenu button, then tap QUtilit ies , Bac kup , the n Bac kup . The s creen dis - plays a list of all the items that will be ba cked up, so it is easy to identify the data a nd size that is saved to the Compact F lash st or age car d. 5. T ap the Start button to begin the backup process.
chapter 3 M ICROSOFT A CT IVE S YNC Using Microsoft ActiveSync, you can synchr onize the information on your computer with the information on your iP AQ H3000 Pocket PC. Synchr onization compares the data on your iP AQ H3000 Pocket P C with your computer and updates both computers with the most r ecent informati on.

chapter 4 M ICROSOFT P OCKE T O UT LOOK Microsoft Pocket Outlook inc ludes Calendar , Contacts, T asks, Inbox, and Notes. Y ou can use these progr a ms individually or together . For example, e-mail addresses s tored in Con- tacts can be used to addr ess e-mail mes sages in I nbox.
Use Calendar to schedule appointments, including meetings and other events. Y ou can check your appointments in one of several views (Agenda, Day , W ee k, Month, and Y ear ) and easily s witch vie ws by us ing the Vi ew menu.
1. T ap the desired date and time for the appointment if you are in Day or W eek view . 2. T ap Ne w . 3. Enter a des cription and a location using the input pane l . T a p first to select the field. 4. T ap the date and time to change them, if nee ded.
When you tap an appointment in Calendar , a summary screen is di splayed. T ap the top portion of the summary s creen to change the appointment..
Y ou can use Ca lendar to s et up m e etings with users of Outlook, Pocket Outlook, or Sched- ule+. T he meeting notice will be create d automatically and sent either when you synchro- nize Inbox or when you connect to your e-mail server . Indicate how you want meeting requests sent by ta pping T ools the n Options .
Contacts maintains a list of your friends and colleagues so that you can eas ily find the information you’re looking for, whether you’re at home or on the road. Using the iP AQ H3000 infrared por t, you can quickly share Conta cts information with other W i ndows- powered de vice user s.
1. T ap New . 2. Enter a name and ot he r contact i nfor mation using the input panel. Y ou will need t o scroll down to see all available fields. 3. Scro ll to and tap Categories and select a c ategory f rom the list to as sign the conta ct to a categor y .
When you tap a conta ct in the contact list, a summary screen is displayed..
Use T asks to keep tr ack of what you ha ve to do. I n the task list, ove rdue tasks are dis- played in bold ( and in r ed on the color iP AQ H3000 and 3000).
1. T ap New . 2. Enter a description using t he input panel. 3. Enter a start date a nd due date or enter other information by first tapping the field. I f the input panel is open, you will need to hide it to see all ava ilable fields. 4. T ap Categories and s elect a category from the list to assign the task to a category .
When you tap a tas k in the task list, a summary screen is dis played..
Quickly capture thoughts , reminders, ideas, drawings, and phone numbers wit h Notes. Y ou can create a written note or a re cording. Y ou can also include a re cording in a note. I f a note is open w hen you create the recording, it will be included in the note as an icon.
1. T ap New . 2. Create your note by wr iting, drawing, typing, and recording. For more inf ormation about using the input panel, writing and dr aw ing on the screen, and creating record- ings, see Chapter 2 ( Basic Ski lls ) .
Use Inbox to s end and receive e-mail mes sages in either of thes e ways: 1. Synchronize e-mail mes sages with Microsoft Exchange or Outlook on your computer . 2. Send and receive e- ma il messages by connecting directly to an e- mail server through an Internet s ervice provider (ISP) or a network.
Messages you receive are disp layed in the mes sage list. B y default, the most recently received messages are displayed fir st in the list..
When you re ceive a mess age, tap it in the list to open it. Unread mes sages a re displayed in bold. When you connec t to your e -mail server or synchronize with your computer , Inbox down- loads only the first 100 lines of ea ch new message by default.
1. T ap New . 2. Ente r an e-mail address in To , or select a name f rom the contact li st by tapping the Address B ook button. All e-mail addresses entered in the e-mail fields in Contacts appear in the Address Book. 3. Compose your mes sage. 4. T ap Send when you’ve finished the m e ssage.
By default, mes sages are displayed in one of four fo lders for ea ch service you’ ve create d: Inbox, Deleted (loc al), Outbox, and Sent. The Deleted folder contains messages that have been deleted on the iP AQ H3000. If you a re using I MAP4, you may s ee a Deleted Items folde r .
chapter 5 C O MPA NION P ROG RAMS The companion programs consis t of Microsoft Pocket W ord, Microsoft Pocket Excel, Microsoft Money*, W indows Media Player f or Pocket PC, Microsoft R eader , and Microsof t Pocket St ree ts* . * A vailable for English operating systems onl y .
Pocket W ord contains a l ist of the files stored on your iP AQ H3000. T ap a file in the lis t to open it. T o delete, make copies of, and send files, tap and hold a f ile in the li s t .
Using the input pa nel, enter typed text into the document. For more information on enter - ing typed text, see Chapter 2 (Basic Skills) . T o format existing text and to edit text, first select the text. Y ou can s elect text as you do in a W ord document, using your stylus instead of the mouse to drag through the text you want to s elect.
In writing mode, use your stylus to write dir ectly on the screen. Ruled lines are displayed as a guide, and the zoom magnif ication is greater than in typing mode to allow you to write more e asily . For more i nformation on writing a nd s electing writing, see Chapter 2 (Bas ic Skills) .
In drawing mode, use your stylus to dr aw on the screen. Gridlines appear as a guide. When you lift your stylus of f the screen after the first stroke, you’ll see a drawing box indicating the boundaries of the drawing. Every subsequent stroke within or touching the drawing box becomes part of the dr awing.
Pocket Excel works with Microsoft E xcel on your computer to give you easy acce ss to copies of your workbooks. Y ou can create ne w workbooks on your iP AQ H3000, or you can copy wor kbooks from your computer to your iP AQ H3000.
Note the following when working in large w orks heets i n Pocket Exce l : • V iew in f ull-screen mode to see as much of your worksheet as possible. T ap Vi e w then Full S creen . T o exit full-s c ree n mode, tap Restore . • Show and hide window elements.
1. T ap , Pr ograms , Microsoft Money , then New . A s creen for enter ing a ccount details with a Requir ed and an Optional tab appears. 2. Enter the name and type of the account on the Re quir ed tab and the other information you want to r ecord on the Optional ta b the n tap OK .
T o view the Account Register for an account, tap it in the Acc ount Manager . The Account Register displays all transactions for that ac count that are stored on your iP AQ H3000. For each transaction, you wil l see the date, the payee, the amount , and the running balance of your account as a r esult of the transaction.
Once you have the Account R egister open, tap New to c reate a new transaction. On the Requir ed tab, Micr osoft Money automatically cr eates a withdrawal and enters today’ s date. If you ar e not entering a withdr awal, tap the Ty p e box and s elect Deposit or Tr a n s f e r .
In the Inves tments screen, you can track the value of the investments in your portfolio. The Investments screen displays e ach inve stment with the curr ent number of shares, their price, and market value. The total mar ket value for all of your inves tments is dis played at the bottom of the screen.
Use W i ndows Media Player for Pocket PC to listen to digital audio files. T o switch to W indows Media Player , tap , W i ndows Media Player . Use W indows Media M anager fo r Pocket PC on the computer to create digital audio files in W indows Media format and to tr ansfer audio content to your iP AQ H3000 or storage card.
W indows Media Manager is included i n the Extras folder on the ActiveSync C D. Y ou must install W indows Media Manager on your computer to copy and conve rt digital audio file s. Packaged content is digital music that has been enc rypted for distribution to prevent unau- thorized access to copyrighted content.
Use the pla ylis t ma nager to s et the tr ack p layback or der . All My Mus ic i s the default play- list. It contains all digit al audio files available for playback on your iP AQ H3000 and s tor- age card. T o see a list of recentl y selected playl ists, tap Sele ct Playlist .
Y ou can download book files from the W eb. Just visit your fa vorite eBook retailer and fol- low the instr uctions to download the book files . Sample books and a dictionary are also included in the MSReader folde r in the Extras folder on the ActiveSync CD.
In addition to the text, eac h book page includes a page number and book title. Y ou can als o page through a book by using the Navigation button on your iP AQ H3000. Reading a b ook electronically gives you several options not available with paper books.
• Drawings. When you add a drawing, a drawing icon appears in the bott om-left corner of the page, and drawing tools appear across the bottom of the page. Draw by dragging your s tylus. When you’ve finished reading a book, you may want t o delete it to conserve space on your iP AQ H3000.
1. Draw a box around the area you want to s ave as a map in Mi crosoft Expedia Str eets and T rips 2000, AutoRoute E xp ress Grea t Britain 2000, or Mic rosoft MapPoint 2000. 2. Click Create M ap For Pock et S treets on the T ools menu. 3. Click Create .
chapter 6 P OCKE T I NTERNE T E XP LORER Use Pocket Internet Explorer to view W eb pages in either of thes e ways: • During s ynchronization with your computer , download your favorite links, mobile favorites, and mobile channels that are stored in the M obile Favorites subfolder in Internet Explorer on t h e computer .
If you ar e using M icrosoft In t ernet Explorer 5 on your computer , you c an download mobile favorites. ( Y ou can install Microsoft I nternet Explorer 5 from the Extras folder on the ActiveSync CD.
Channels are websites designed specifically for offline view ing on your i P AQ H3000. Y ou can subscribe to two types of channels at no fee: A vantGo Channels ( A v ailable for English operating sy stems only . ) and mobile channels. * A vailable for English operating systems onl y .
Mobile channels are s i tes you subscribe to on your computer . They are stored in the Chan- nels subfolder in the Mobile Favorites folder in I nternet Explorer 4.
1. T ap the Favorites button to display your list of favo rites. 2. T ap the mobile f avorite or c hannel you want to view . Y ou’ll see the page that was downloaded the last time you synchronize d with your com- puter . I f the page is not on your iP AQ H3000, the favorite will be dimmed.
1. Connect to the Internet or your network in eith e r of the f ollowing ways: 2. Connect using Con n ections , a s described in Chapter 7 ( Getting Connected) . T hen switch to Pocket Internet E xplorer by tapping it on the m enu. 3. Connect in Pocket Internet Explorer .
chapter 7 G ETT ING C ON N ECT ED Y ou can us e your iP A Q H3000 to excha nge information with other W indows -powered devices as well as your computer , a ne twork, or the Internet. Us e the Infrared ( IR) port on your iP AQ H3000 to send and r eceive files between t wo devices.
Using the IR port on your iP AQ H3000, you c an send a nd receive information, such as contacts and appointm ents, with another W indows-powered device at s pe eds of up to 1 15.2Kbps. 1. Switch to the pr ogram where you created the item you want to send and locate the item in the li s t.
Y ou can conne ct to your ISP by cr eating a modem conne ction. Once connected, you can send and receive e-mail me ssages and view W eb pages. 1. Get the f ollowing information from your ISP: ISP dial-up a ccess telephone number , user name, pas swor d, and TCP/I P settings .
5. Enter a name for the connection, such as “ISP Connection”. 6. Select your mode m type in the Select a modem list. If your modem type does not appear , tr y re-inserting the modem card. 7. Enter the access phone number, and tap Next . 8. Select other desired options, and tap Fin ish .
1. Get the f ollowing information from your network administrator: dial-up ac cess tele - phone number , user name, password, domain name, a nd TCP/IP settings. 2. Install a CompactFlash modem card us i ng the optional iP AQ CF Card Expansion Pack or a P CMCIA modem card us ing the optional iP AQ PC Card Expansion Pack.
Y ou do not nee d to c reate a new connection on your iP AQ H3000. Instead, you must pur - chase and configure an Ethernet c ard that is compatible with your iP AQ H3000. 1. Get the following information from your network a dministra tor: use r name, password, and domain name.
If you started the connection fr om a program, such as Inbox or Pocket Internet Explorer , disconnect from that program first. Then, tap then To d a y . T ap or at the bottom of the scr een then Disconnect . T o end a networ k connection, remove the card from your iP AQ H3000.
3. Select a connec tion f rom the Con nectio n list. If you have not c reated a connection, selec t Cr e ate new connection and follow the s t eps in the wizard. When you return to this screen at the end of the wizard, select the connection you created from the Con - nection list.
appendix a T IPS AN D T ROUBL ESHOO TING This chapter contains t roubles hooting infor mation that can help you to s olve any problems you might encounter with your iP AQ H3000. It also has a tips section that may help you to get better service from your iP A Q H3000.
If you want to clear all data from your iP AQ H3000 and return it t o the fa c tory settings , you should clear the memor y . 1. Using the stylus, slide open the On/Off door on the base of the iP AQ H3000. 2. Slide the On /Off sw i tch to the Off position using the stylus.
3. Close the Battery On/Off door using the stylus. When the battery is low , you w ill see a batter y icon in the s t atus bar of the To d a y screen. Rechar ge a low battery as soon as possible. If your iP AQ H3000 shuts down, you still have about 24 hours to recharge the battery befo re you lose the data on your Pocket PC.
The iP AQ H3000 produces sounds in response to a number of events, such as warnings, appointments, and s creen taps or hardware-button presses. T o optimize battery life, tur n of f any sounds you don’t need. T ap then Settin gs . On th e Pers onal tab, tap Sou nds & Reminder s a nd clear check boxes on the Vo l u m e and Remi nde rs tabs.
• Move data t o a storage card. •T a p , Pr ograms , th e n File E xpl or er . T ap and hold the file you want to move, and tap Cut . Br owse to the My Doc ume nts folde r in the stor age ca rd folder , tap Ed it, then tap Paste .
• Stop programs you are not currently using. In most cas es, programs automatically stop to free needed memory . However , in s om e situations, such as when confirmation dia - log boxes are waiting f or a user response, the program may not be able to automati- cally stop.
• T urn on the backlight, by holding down the Power button for one second. • Adjust t he backlight brightness l e vel. Press the QMenu button, then tap Backlight , Supe r Bri g ht . • Position a lamp so that the light shines directly on the screen.
Y ou may encounter the following pr oblems when us ing a modem. Additional trouble- shooting information is available in Connec tions Help on the iP AQ H3000 and Active- Sync Help on the computer . • Remove your iP AQ H3000 from the c radle. Y ou cannot connect using a modem i f your iP AQ H3000 has an active connection wi th the c omputer .
• Make s ure the network to which you are trying to connect s upports the Point-to-Point Protoc ol (PPP) . Y our Internet service provider or netw ork administr at or can verify this. • V erif y that the location is correct. T ap then Sett ings . On the Connectio ns ta b, tap Modem .
• The fol lowing solutions may help if you e ncounter problems when usin g a network card for network connections. Additional tr oubleshooting information is available in Connections Help on the iP AQ H3000 and ActiveSync He lp on the computer . • V erify that you have an Ethernet card that is compatible with your iP AQ H3000.

The Character Recognizer input panel is divided into thr ee writing areas. Letters writ te n in the left area (labeled ABC ) creates uppercase letters, and letters written in the middle area (labeled abc ) cr eates lower case letters.
