6 Setting Up Y our Inspiron Desktop Extend the Rear Stabilizing Feet With the computer sitting in an upright position, carefully lift the rear of the computer , and rotate the stabilizing feet outwards. The extended feet ensure maximum system stability .
7 Setting Up Y our Inspiron Desktop Connect the Keyboard and Mouse Connect the USB keyboard and mouse to the USB connectors on the back panel of your computer .

13 Setting Up Y our Inspiron Desktop Set Up Microsoft Windows Y our Dell computer is preconfigured with Microsoft ® Windows ® operating system. T o set up Windows for the first time, follow the instructions on the screen. These steps are mandatory and may take some time to complete.

16 Front V iew Features 1 FlexBay drive eject button — Opens the Flexbay cover when pressed. 2 FlexBay slot — Can support an optional Media Card Reader or an additional hard drive. 3 Power button — T urns the computer on or off when pressed. The light in the center of this button indicates the power state.

NOTE: T o connect to a powered speaker or sound system, use the audio connectors on the back of your computer . 6 Line-in or microphone connector — Connects to a microphone for voice or to an audio cable for audio input.

28 Solving Problems Network Problems Wireless Connections If the network connection is lost — The wireless router is offline or wireless has been disabled on the computer . Check your wireless router to ensure it is • powered on and connected to your data source (cable modem or network hub).
29 Solving Problems Power Problems If the power light is off — The computer is in hibernate mode, turned off, or is not receiving power . Press the power button to resume normal • operation. Reseat the power cable into both the • power connector on the computer and the electrical outlet.
30 Solving Problems If the power light is solid amber — The computer is in sleep or standby state. • Press a key on the keyboard, move the connected mouse, or press the power button to resume normal operation. There may be a problem with either the • system board or the power supply .
31 Solving Problems Memory Problems If you receive an insufficient memory message — Save and close any open files and exit any • open programs you are not using to see if that resolves the problem. See the software documentation for • minimum memory requirements.
32 Solving Problems Lockups and Software Problems If the computer does not start up — Ensure that the power cable is firmly connected to the computer and to the electrical outlet. If a program stops responding — End the program: Press <Ctrl><Shift><Esc> simultaneously .

36 Using Support T ools No boot device available — No bootable partition on hard drive, the hard drive cable is loose, or no bootable device exists. If the hard drive is your boot device, ensure • that the cables are connected and that the drive is installed properly and partitioned as a boot device.
37 Using Support T ools Hardware T roubleshooter If a device is either not detected during the operating system setup or is detected but incorrectly configured, you can use the Hardware T roubleshooter to resolve the incompatibility . T o start the Hardware T roubleshooter: Click 1.
38 Using Support T ools Starting Dell Diagnostics From Y our Hard Drive The Dell Diagnostics is located on a hidden diagnostic utility partition on your hard drive. NOTE: If your computer cannot display a screen image, contact Dell (see “Contacting Dell” on page 55 ).
39 Using Support T ools If you are experiencing memory issues c. press <y>, otherwise press <n>. The following message is displayed: “Booting Dell Diagnostic Utility Partition. Press any key to continue.” Press any key to go to the d. Choose An Option window .

Use System Restore as the first solution for restoring your operating system and preserving data files.

43 Restoring Y our Operating System Undoing the Last System Restore NOTE: Before you undo the last system restore, save and close all open files, and exit any open programs. Do not alter , open, or delete any files or programs until the system restoration is complete.
44 Restoring Y our Operating System T o schedule backups: Double‑click the Dell DataSafe Local icon 1. on the taskbar . Choose 2. Full System Backup to create and schedule automatic backup of all the data in your computer . To restore data: T urn off your computer .
45 Restoring Y our Operating System Dell Factory Image Restore CAUTION: Using Dell Factory Image Restore permanently deletes all data on the hard drive and removes any programs or drivers installed after you received your computer . If possible, back up the data before using this option.
