Setting Up and Using Y our Computer 35 Using Blank CDs and DVDs CD-R W drives can write to CD record ing media only (including high-speed CD-R W) while DVD-writable drives can write to both CD and D VD recor ding media. Use blank CD-Rs to recor d music or p ermanently store data files.

94 T r oubleshooting T ool s Drivers What is a Driver? A driver is a program that controls a device such as a printer , mouse, or keyboar d. All devices require a driver program. A driver acts like a translator between the device and any other programs that use the device.
T roubleshooting T ools 95 Reinstalling Drivers and Utilities NOTICE: The Dell Support website at support.dell.com and your Drivers and Utilities media provide approved drivers for De ll™ computers. If you install drivers obtained from other sources, your computer might no t work correctly .
96 T r oubleshooting T ool s Using the Drivers and Utilities media If using Device Driver Rollback or Sy stem Restore ("Restoring Y our Operating System" on page 98) does not resolve the problem, then r einstall the driver from the Drivers and Utilities media.
T roubleshooting T ools 97 Manually Reinstalling Drivers After extracting the driver files to your har d drive as described in the previous section, do the following: 1 Click Start , and right-click Computer . 2 Click P roperties → Device Manager . NOTE: The User Account Control window may appear .
98 T r oubleshooting T ool s W indows Vista: 1 Click the W indows Vista Start button , and click Help and Support. 2 Ty p e hardware troubleshooter in the search field and press <Enter> to start the search. In the search results, select the option that best describes the problem and follow the remaining troubleshooting steps.
T roubleshooting T ools 99 Starting Sy stem Restore Wi n d o w s X P : NOTICE: Before you restore the computer to an earlier operating state, save and close any open files and exit any open pr ograms. Do not alter , open, or delete any files or programs until the sy stem restoration is complete.
100 T r oubleshooting T ool s Enabling Sy stem Restore NOTE: Windows Vista does not disable Sy st em Restore; regardless of low disk space. Therefore, the steps be low apply only to Windows XP . If you reinstall W indows XP with less than 200 MB of fr ee hard-disk space available, System Restore is automatically disabled.
T roubleshooting T ools 101 NOTICE: If you do not want to proceed with PC Restore, click Reboot in the following step. 3 On the next scr een that appears, click Res t or e . 4 On the next scr een, click Confirm . The restor e process takes approximately 6–10 minutes to complete.
102 T r oubleshooting T ool s 7 Click the checkbox to confirm that you want to continue reformatting the hard drive and r estoring the system so ftware to the factory condition, then click Next . The restor e process begins and may take five or more minutes to complete.
T roubleshooting T ools 103 6 Right-click Local Disk (C) in W indows Explorer , click P rop erties , and verify that the additional disk spac e is available as indicated by the increased value for F ree Space . 7 Click Fi n i s h to close the PC Re st or e Rem ov al window .
