Unle ss otherwise noted, each procedure assumes that: • Y ou have performed the steps in "Before W orking on Y our Computer" on page 9.
10 Before W orking on Y our Computer CAUTION: When you disconnect a cable, pull on its connector or on its pull-tab, not on the cable itself. Some cables have connectors with locking tabs; if you are disconnecting this type of cable, press in on the locking tabs before you disconnect the cable.

26 Drive Bezel Replacing the Drive Bezel NOTE: This procedure assumes that you hav e completed the removal procedure first. 1 W ith the computer set upright, align and insert the clamps on the left edge of the bezel into the bezel clamp slots along the left edge of the front panel.

Removing a PCI or PCI Express Card From a Mini T ower Computer 1 F ollow the procedure in "Befor e W o rking on Y our Computer" on page 9.

32 Cards 3 If you are installing a new card, r emove the filler bracket covering the emp ty ca rd slot. T o remo ve a f iller brac ket, gen tly i nsert a scr ibe un der t he top edge of the bracket. 4 If you are r eplacing a card that is al ready installed in the computer , r emove the card.
Cards 33 NOTE: For information on configuring the card, making internal connections, or customizing it for your computer , see the documentation that came with the card. WAR NI NG : Some network adapters automatical ly start the computer when they are connected to a network.
34 Cards 10 Secure the car d(s) by closing the card r etention latch and snapping it into place. CAUTION: Do not route card cables over or behind the cards. Cables routed over the cards can prevent the computer cover from closing properly or cause damage to the equipment.
Cards 35 14 Install any drivers requ ired for the car d as described in the card documentation. Removing a PCI or PCI Express Card From a Deskto p Computer NOTE: If applicable, see "Removing a Card Fr om the Optional Riser -Card Cage" on page 50.
36 Cards 5 If you are r eplacing a PCI Express x16 card , remove the installed card by gently pulling the release leve r away from the card until you release the securing tab from the dent in the card . 6 Grasp the card by its top corners, and ease it out of its connector .
Cards 37 4 If you are installing a new card, remove the filler bracket covering the empty card slot. T o remove a filler bracket, gently insert a scribe under the top edge of the bracket.
38 Cards WAR NI NG : Some network adapters automatically start the computer when they are connected to a network. T o guard agains t electrical sho ck, be sure to unplug your computer from it s electrical outlet before installing any cards.
Cards 39 NOTE: If you are installing a PCI Express x16 card, ensure that the securing tab on the connector’ s release lever fits into the notch on the front end of the card. 8 T o secure the car ds, gently rotate the release lever downward to move the card r etention latch into place.
40 Cards CAUTION: Do not route card cables over or behind the cards. Cables routed over the cards can prevent the computer cover from closing properly or cause damage to the equipment. 9 Connect any cables that should be attached to the card. 10 F ollow the procedure in "After W ork ing on Y our Computer" on page 17.

42 Cards 4 Disconnect the PS/2 serial-port cable from the system board (see "Mini T ower Computer System Boar d Components" on page 13). 5 If necessary , disconnect an y external cables connected to the adapter . 6 Ease the PS/2 serial-port adap ter bracket out of its slot.
Cards 43 4 Remove the filler bracket (if applicable). 48 Cards 5 Align the PS/2 serial-por t adapter bracke t in the slot and press down firmly . Ensure that the adapter is fully seated in the slot. 6 Before you close the card r ete ntion mechanism, ensur e that: • The tops of all cards and filler brackets ar e flush with the alignment guide .
Cards 49 8 Connect the adapter cable to the PS/2 serial-port adapter connector on the system board (see "Desktop Comput er System Boar d Components" on page 15). NOTE: For information about the cable connections, see the documentation for the PS/2 serial-port adapter .
50 Cards Removing a Card From the Optional Riser -Card Cage NOTE: The riser -card cage is an option for the desktop computer only . 1 F ollow the procedure in "Befor e W o rking on Y our Computer" on page 9. 2 Remove the computer cover (see "Removing the Desktop Computer Cover" on page 21).
Cards 51 7 If you are r emoving a card permanently , install a filler bracket in the empty card-slot opening. NOTE: Installing filler brackets in empty card-slot opening s is necessary to maintain FCC certification of the com puter . The brackets also keep dust and dirt out of your computer and maintain the airflow tha t cools your computer .
52 Cards b Ensure that the riser -card connectors are fully seated in the connectors on the system board. c Rotate the riser -card cage handle to the down position. Installing or Replacing a Card in the Optional Riser -Card Cage NOTE: The riser -card cage is an option for the desktop computer only .
Cards 53 4 Gently push the release lever on the car d retention latch to pivot the latch open. The latch remains in the open position. 5 If you are installing a new card, remove the filler bracket to cr eate an empty card-slot opening.

56 Drives Drive Interface Connectors The drive cable connectors ar e keyed for correct insertion. P roperly align the cable connector key on t he cable and the drive before connecting. Connecting and Discon necting Drive Cables When connecting and disconnecting a SA T A data cable, disconnect the cabl e using the pull-tab.
Drives 57 The SA T A interface connectors are k eyed for corr ect insertion; that is, a notch or a missing pin on one connector ma tc hes a tab or a filled-in hole on the other connector . Optical Drive Removing an Optical Drive From the Mini T ower Computer 1 F ollow the procedure in "Befor e W orking on Y our Computer" on page 9.
58 Drives b Remove the unused data cab le from the computer . c Install a drive panel insert to co ver the empty drive bay opening (see "Installing an Optical Drive P anel Insert" on page 59). d F ollow the procedure in "After W orking on Y our Computer" on page 17.
Drives 59 5 Connect the data cable to the syst em board connector on the system board. 6 F ollow the procedure in "After W ork ing on Y our Computer" on page 17.
60 Drives 2 Remove the computer cover (see "Removing the Desktop Computer Cover" on page 21). CAUTION: Do not pull the drive out of the computer by the drive cables.
Drives 61 b Insert the three shoulder screws r emo ved from the insert into the sides of the new drive and tighten them. c Lift the drive release latch up and insert the new optical dr ive.
62 Drives 6 F ollow the procedure in "After W ork ing on Y our Computer" on page 17. 7 Update the configuration information in the system setup program by setting the appropriate Drive option (0 or 1) under Drives . F or more information on using the system setup program, see the Dell T echnolog y Guide on your computer or at support.
Drives 63 5 Disconnect the power and data cables from the back of th e floppy drive. 6 Grasp the drive release latch and slide it toward the bottom of the computer until the drive panel snaps open. While holding the drive release latch in place, slide the drive out of the computer .
64 Drives Replacing or Adding a Floppy Drive or Media Car d Reader in the Mini To w e r C o m p u t e r NOTE: This procedure assumes that you hav e completed the removal procedure first. 1 If you are r eplacing a floppy drive or media card r eader , remove the shoulder screws from the existing drive and attach the screws to the replacement drive.
Drives 65 4 Attach the power and data cables to th e floppy drive or media card r eader and to the system board..
66 Drives 5 F ollow the procedure in "After W ork ing on Y our Computer" on page 17. 6 Enable the new f loppy drive or medi a card reader in the system setup program. F or information on using the system setup program, see the Dell Te c h n o l o g y G u i d e on your computer or at support.
Drives 67 3 Remove the optical drive and set it aside (see "Removing the Optical Drive F rom the Desktop Computer" on page 59). CAUTION: Do not pull the drive out of the comp uter by the drive cables. Doing so may cause damage to cables and the cable connectors.
68 Drives Replacing or Adding a Floppy Drive or Media Car d Reader in the Desktop Computer NOTE: This procedure assumes that you hav e completed the removal procedure first. 1 If you are installing a new floppy drive or media card reader: a Remove the drive panel inse rt installed in the drive bay .
Drives 69 4 Attach the power and data cables to th e floppy drive or media card r eader . 5 Align the shoulder screws with the sc rew guides on the chassis, and slide the drive into the bay (the slot labe led "2") until it clicks into place.
70 Drives 9 Enable the new f loppy drive or medi a card reader in the system setup program. F or more information on using the system setup program, see the Dell T echnology Guide on your computer or at support.dell.com . 10 V erify that your compute r works corr ectly by running the Dell Diagnostics (see "Dell Diagnostics" on page 136).

Drives 75 2 While gently pulling the edges of the bracket away from the hard drive, lift the hard drive out of the bracket. 3 Place the hard drive brack et on a fl at surface, with the label face -up.
76 Drives Removing a Hard Drive From a De sktop Computer CAUTION: If you are rep lacing a hard d rive that contains data you want to keep, back up your files before you begin this procedure. 1 Check the documentation for the drive to verify that it is configured for your computer .
Drives 77 7 Lift the drive out of the computer . 8 Disconnect the power and data cables from the drive . Replacing or Adding a Hard Drive in a Desktop Computer NOTE: This procedure assumes that you have completed the removal procedure first. 1 Check the documentation for the drive to verify that it is configur ed for your computer .
78 Drives 5 Locate the correct bay for the drive, an d slide the drive into the bay unti l it clicks in to place . 6 Replace the floppy drive (see "Replaci ng or Adding a Floppy Drive or Media Card Reader in the Desktop Computer" on page 68).
Drives 79 11 Enter the system setup program and update the SA T A port option under the Drives option list. F or more information on usi ng the system setup program, see the Dell T echnology Guide on your computer or at support.dell.com . 12 Exit the system setup program, and r eboot the computer .

Memory Modules 91 Align the notch on the bottom of the module with the crossbar in the connector .. CAUTION: T o avoid damage to the memory m odule, press the module straight down into the connector while you apply equal force to each end of the module.
