iii A BOUT T HIS G UIDE Congratulations on your purchase of th e 5-Port 10/100M Switch. This device integrates 100Mbps Fast Ethern et and 10Mbps Ethernet network capabili ties in a high ly flexibl e desktop package. Purpose This manual discusses how to install your 5-Port 10/100M Switch.
I NTRODUCTION This chapter describes th e features of the Switch and some background information about Ethern et/Fast Ethernet switching technology. Fast Ethernet Technology The growing im portance of L ANs and the incre asing complexity of de sktop computing applications are fueling the need for high performance networks.
Switching Technology Another approach t o pushing beyond the limits of Ethern et technology is the deve lopment of switching technology . A switch bridges Ethern et packets at the MA C address lev el of the Ethernet protoc ol. It transmits packets among conn ected Ethernet or Fast Ethernet LAN segments.
Switching LAN technolo gy is a marked improvem ent over the previous gener ation of network bridges, which were characterized by higher latencies. Today switches are an ideal solution to most kinds of l ocal area network cong estion problems.
The Switch is an unman aged 10/100 Fast Ethern et Switch that offers solutions in accelerating small Ether net workgroup bandwidth. Other key features are: Auto-MDI (media dependent interface) port .
U NP ACKING AND S ETUP This chapter provides unpacking an d setup information for DSS-5+. Unpacking Open the shipping cartons of the Switch and carefully unpacks its contents.
I DENTIFYING E XTERNAL C OMPONENTS This section identi fies all the maj or external com ponents of the DSS-5+. Both the front and rear panels are show n followed by a description of each panel feature. The indicator panel is described in detail in the next chapter.
its power adapter into a power outlet will immedia tely power it on. Auto-MDI Jacks: These jacks suppor ts automatic MDI/MDIX crossover detection function gives true ‘pl ug and play ’ capability without the need of confusing crossover cables or crossover ports.
C ONNECTING T HE S WITCH This chapter describes how to connect the DSS -5+ to your Fast Ethernet network. PC to Switch A PC can be connected to the Switch via a two-pair Cat egory 3,4, or5 UTP/STP straight-through cable. For 100Mbps operation Ca tegory 5 must be used.
