4 SECTION 1: TRACTOR PREPARATION Connect the Battery Battery posts, terminals and related accessories contain lead and lead compou nds. Wash hands after hand ling . The tractor is shipped with a sealed battery, with the positive battery cable factory connected.

6 • Never leave a running machi ne unattended. Always turn off blade(s), place transmission in neutral, set park brake, stop engine an d remove key before dismou nting.
7 • Avoid starting or stopping on a slope. If tires lose tra ction, disen- gage the blade(s) a nd proceed slowly straight down the slope. • Follow the manufacture rs recom- mendations for wheel weights or counterweights to improve stability. • Use extra care with grass catchers or other attachments.
8 • To reduce fire hazard, keep the machine free of grass, leaves or other debris buil d-up. Clean up oil or fuel spillage. Allow machine to cool at least 5 minutes before storing. • Before cleaning, repairing or inspecting, make certain the b lade and all moving parts have stopped.

Reference to FRONT indicates the grille end of the tractor; to REAR, the drawbar end. Steering Wheel The steering wheel, centered on the dash panel, is used to turn the tractor left or right while drivin g.
13 • The hour meter is activated whe n the key switch is turned to either the “NORMAL MOWING” or the "REVERSE CAUTION MODE" switch positions. A record of the actual hours of operation shou ld be kept to assure maintenance proce- dures are completed according to the schedule in this manual.
14 D. P arking Brake Lever Figure 6 The parking brake lever is loca ted to the right of the steering whee l in the dash panel. With the brake peda l depressed fully, push the parking brake lever downward and release th e brake pedal to lock the parking brake.
15 M. Fuel Fill Cap The fuel fill cap is located on the fender to the left of the seat. N. Cup Holder The cup holder is located on the fender to the left of the seat. O . Hydraulic Lift L ever The hydraulic lift lever is located on the fender to the le ft of the seat.
16 IMPORTANT: When u sing power take-off operated equipment, best performance is achieved with the throttle lever in the “FAST” position. V . Choke Le ver The choke lever is locate d to the left of the steering wheel in the throttle/choke lever pod.

18 Driving On Slopes Refer to the SLOPE GAUGE on page 41 to help determine slopes where you may not operate safely. WARNING: Do not mow on inclin es with a sl ope in excess of 15 degrees (a r ise of approximately 2-1/2 feet every 10 feet). The tractor could overturn and cause serious injury.
19 Using the REVERSE CA UTION MODE ke y position The REVERSE CAUTION MODE position of the key switch module allows the machine to be operated in reverse with the blades (PTO) engaged. IMPORTANT: Mowing in reverse is not recommended . Use extreme caution while operating the tractor in the “Reverse Caution Mode”.
20 Engagin g Differential Loc k Fully depress the diff. lock pedal to lock the transmission differential and provide constant power to both rear wheels when increased traction is needed. Release the diff. lock pedal when extra traction is not needed. Depressing the brake pedal also actuates the diff.
21 SECTION 8: ADJUSTMENTS Seat Adjustment WARNING: Do not adjust the seat when the tractor is moving, as th is could cause the opera tor to lose contro l of the tractor. For the comfort of the operator, the tractor is equipped with an easy to operate adjustable seat.
22 Brake Inspection and Adjustment During normal operation, the tractor brake is su bject to minimal we ar. How- ever, the brake should be periodical ly tested, and adjusted if necessary. Checking the Brake. Place the tract or on a firm and level surface.

25 Accessing Engine Compar tment The engine compartment can be accessed by raising the hood as follows: • Lift the hood straight upward at the recessed notches of the si de panels to disengage the i nternal hood latch. • Carefully pivo t the hood forw ard to open.
26 with a solution of ammonia/water or baking soda/water. • NEVER connect (or disconnect) battery charger clips to the ba ttery while the charger is turned on, as it can cause sparks. • Keep all sources of ignition (cig a- rettes, matches, lighters) away from the battery.
27 Charging the Battery Test and, if necessary, recharge the battery after the tractor has been stored for a period of time. • A voltmeter or load teste r should read 12.6 volts (DC) or higher across the battery terminals. • Charge the battery wi th a 12-volt battery charger at a MAXIMUM rate of 10 amps.

30 Fuse Fuses are install ed to protect the tra c- tor’s electrical system from damage caused by excessive amperage. Always use the same capacity fuse for replacement. Refer to the Specifica- tions Chart. If the electrical system does not function , check the fuses.

33 Cleaning The Engine This tractor has an air-cooled engine. Air must be able to circulate freely around the engine through the flywheel screen, through the cooling shrouds and over the fins of the cylinder head and cylin der block.
34 Refer to Figure 27 for information regarding the proper typ e of oil to ad d to the crankcase. • Place the tractor on a level surface and engage the parking brake. Sto p the tractor engine and remove the ignition key. • Clean the area around the oil filler cap to prevent debris from entering the crankcase.
35 • Attach the flexible tubing to the drain valve. Place an approp riate container below the open end o f the tubing to collect the old oil. • To open the drain valve, pu sh it slightly inward and turn it counterclockwise until it stops, then pull it outward.
36 WARNING: Operating the engine with loose or dam- aged air clean er components will allow unfiltered air in to the carburetor , causing e x- tensive wear and eventual failure of the engine. Servicing The Precleaner Wash and re-oil the foam pre cleaner more often under extreme ly dusty or dirty conditions.
