3 1. GENERAL OPERATION • Read, und erstand, an d follow all instructi ons in the operator’s manual and on the machi ne be fore start ing . 4 • Never leave a running machine unattended. Always turn off blade(s), place transmission in neutral, set park brake, stop engine and remove key before dismounti ng.

12 Ignition / Light Switc h To prevent acc idental startin g and/or battery d ischarge , remove the ke y from the ig nition s witch when th e tractor is not in use. The combinatio n ligh ts an d ignit ion sw itch ha s four positions . See Figure 8 for a descripti on of eac h positio n.
13 IMP ORT ANT: When using po wer take-off ope rated equipm ent, best performanc e is achie ved with th e throttle lever in the “FAST” pos ition. Seat Adju stment Lever The seat ad justment lever is located below the seat. This lev er is used to adjust th e seat forward or back.
14 SECTION 7: OPERATION Safety Interlock Switches This trac tor is eq uipped wit h a safet y interlock system for the protectio n of the opera tor. If the inte rlock sys tem sh ould e ver m alf uncti on, d o no t operate the tractor. C ontact yo ur authorize d Cub Cadet Dealer.
15 • Place the PTO switc h in the “ OFF ” position. Place the thro ttle contro l lever between the “ MID ” and “ FAST ” positions . Then turn the ignitio n key to the “ OFF ” posi tion. • Remove the k ey from the ignition switch . Dri ving The T ract or WARNING: Avoid sudden starts, excessiv e speed a nd sudden s tops.
16 Before opera ting the tractor on any slope, w alk the sl ope to look for possibl e hazards s uch as rocks . mounds, ruts, stum ps or other su rface irregulariti es which c ould cause th e tractor to b e upset. Back the tractor with attachmen t up the steepes t portion of ea ch slope yo u intend to w ork.
17 SECTION 8: ADJUSTMENTS Seat Adjustment WARNING: Do not adjust the seat when the tracto r is moving. A djusting the seat while the tractor is moving could cause the oper ator to lose contr ol of the trac tor. To allow for the comfort of the operator, an easy to operate ad justable seat is a feature of this tractor.
18 • Release the Parking Brake Lev er. If the tractor ca nnot be pushe d forward or rea rward, the brakin g force mus t be decreas ed. Adjusting th e Brake. Remove the rear drawbar fro m the frame by removing the four hex tap p screws . NOTE: The oil fil l tube/ dipstick will be p ulled from the transmis sion housing .

To remove the battery : • Open the trac tor hood by lifting it at the notche s in the side panels. • Remove th e upper baffle o f the bulkhead from the front of the dash panel by li fting upwar d on the locking t ab on each s ide of the baffle.

31 To remove the spa rk plugs , alway s use a sp ark plug wrench. C heck th e gap aft er every 100 hours of operation. Replac e a defective p lug with a new plug. Set t he spark plug gap at .030 inch. Tighte n the plug to 18-22 ft-lbs. See your a uthorized dealer f or the correc t replacemen t plug.
32 Servicing The Paper Ele ment Inspect a n replace the paper ele ment as necessa ry. See Figure 26. • Loosen t he air c leaner c over knob and re move t he cove r. • Loosen and remove the element cover wing nut. • Re mov e elem ent cov er by lifti ng str aig ht up.
33 SECTION 11: MOWER DECK Deck Le veling Adjustments The 44" mower deck is eq uip ped w ith ground follow ing front caster wh eels and is des igned to be op erated with caster wheels on th e ground. However, to ensure an even cut on al l types of te rrain, the mower d eck should be proper ly leveled.
34 7. Turn the hex lock nu t upward (tighten) on the thr eads of the lift rod to raise th e left side of the mower dec k. Turn the lock n ut down (l oosen) on t he thread s to lower th e left s ide of t he mower deck. Figure 29 8. Rechec k the mea surement s de- s c ri be d i n s te p 5 .
35 • Loosen the hex jam n uts and lock washers on the front l ift rod. • From the fro nt of the tractor, tu rn the front hex lo ck nuts cl ockwise to raise the front of the de ck, or countercl ockwise to lower the front of the deck.

39 6. Use the tr actor lift sys tem leve r to lower the li ft links. 7. Unlock the lef t lift li nk by sli ding the left l ift rod fu lly rearward i n the slot of the lift link (Se e Figure 42 ). 40 13. Slide the deck dri ve shaft f ully onto the PTO shaft of t he tractor (See Figure 45 ). The auto-lok col- lar of the d rive shaf t should snap into the l ocked po sition whe n the shaft is pro perly posi tioned on th e PTO shaft.
41 When reins talling the blade s, be su re they are in stalled s o that the win d wings a re pointing upward to ward the top of the deck. Tighten the nuts to 90 to 110 ft-lbs. (122 to 149 N·m). After repl acing the bla des, appl y grease to t he expos ed threads at the bottom of the spi ndle bol ts to pre vent rust build up.
42 C. Spindle Belt Replacement A worn spindle belt will affect th e qualit y of cut from the mower de ck and should be replaced. Referring to Figures 48, 50 and 52, rep lace the sp indle belt a s fol lows : NOT E: Clea n any accu mul ated gra ss clipping s from the mo wer deck befo re beginning belt repl acement .

44 Mowing With Dec k A. Normal Mowing WARNI NG: To avoid pos si- ble injury, n ever direct the discharge of material toward bystanders or allow anyone n ear the m achine while in oper ation. Although th e area has been supposed ly cleared of for- eign objects, small objects may be picked up and dis- charged by the mower.
