38 User Connections Analog Current Control (applies in Fixed mode only) The setup sho wn in Figure 4-11 allows an external dc voltage to p rogram the Agilent SA S o utp ut current in Fixed mode. A voltage applied to the differential current programming input programs the output current.
User Connections 39 Note The Agilent SAS is shipped from the factory with its GPIB add ress set to 5. T he Agilent SAS prim ary and secondary addresses can be changed from the front panel as described un d er Changing the GPIB Address in chapter 5. For Agilent SA S GP IB interface capabilities, see appendix A.

Front Panel Operation 41 5 Front Panel Operation Introduction Note Only in Fixed m o de are front panel op e ratio ns fully functional. The Agilent SAS can be operated as a standard dc so urce in Fixed mode. SAS functions are available w hen the unit is set to Simu lator or T able mode.
42 Front Panel Operation Table 5-1. Front Panel Controls and Indicators (See Figure 5-1) Control or Indicator Function or Indication Display VOLTS Shows present output voltage o f the Agilent SAS. AMPS Shows present output current o f the Agilent SA S.

44 Front Panel Operation Programming the Output Important These instructions sho w how to program a single Ag ilent SAS from the f ront panel. T hese instructions apply primarily when the unit is set to operate in Fixed mode.
Front Panel Operation 45 Programming Curr ent You may program the Ag ilent SAS current w itho ut a load , but must have a load in order to draw output current. These tests assum e you have the load con nected in accordance w ith the inf o rmation in chapter 4 - User Connections and Considerations .
46 Front Panel Operation Clearing The OVP Condition With the OVP tripp ed, return to the meter mode and try to clear the condition by pressing . Nothing will appear to happen because the OV trip voltage is still below th e programm ed o utput voltage.
Front Panel Operation 47 CV Mode VS. CC Mode Once you pr ogram a vo lta ge (V SE T ) and a current (I SET ), the Agilent SAS w ill maintain itself in either CV or CC m o de, depending on the resistance of the load (R L ). If the load demands less current than I SET , operatio n will be in CV m o de with the voltage maintained at V SET .
48 Front Panel Operation 3. T urn o ff the Agilent SAS. 4. Hold in the key and turn the Ag ilent SA S back on. The display indicates RCL 0 PWR-ON to verify that the A gilent SAS has configured its turn-on state to that stored in lo cation 0. 5. From now on the unit w ill always turn on to the state defined in location 0.
Remote Programming 49 6 Remote Programming GPIB Capabilities of the Agilent SAS All A gilent S AS f unctions except f or settin g the GPIB address are program mable ov er the IEEE 488 bu s (also k now n as the General Purpose Interf ace B us or "GPIB" ).
50 Remote Programming Types of SCPI Commands SCPI h as tw o types of com mands , com mon and subsy stem . ■ Common comm ands (see table 7-1) generally are not related to sp ecific op eratio n but to controlling o verall Agilent SAS functions, such as reset, status, and synchronization.
Remote Programming 51 Moving Among Subsystems In order to co mbine comm ands from different subsystem s, you need to be able to restore the active path to the ro ot.
52 Remote Programming The following figure illustrates the SCPI message structure: Figure 6-2. Command Message Structure The Message Unit The simplest SCPI com man d is a single m essage unit consistin g of a com mand header (or k eyw ord) followed by a message termin ator.
Remote Programming 53 SCPI Data Formats All data programm e d to or returned fro m the unit is ASCII. The data may be numerical or charact er string. Numerical Data Table 2-1. Numerical Data Formats Symbol Data For m Talking Formats <NR1> Digits with an im plied d ecimal point assumed at the right of the least-significant digit.
54 Remote Programming Examples Most examples given here are generic, without regard to the programming language or ty pe of GPIB inter face. Because SCPI c o mmands are sent a s ASCI I outp ut strings within the pro gramming language statements, the SCP I syntax is independ ent o f both pro gramm ing language and interface.
Remote Programming 55 The following example illustrates auto-parallel operation in T able mode. 1000 ! 2 Units in auto-parallel - Table Mode 1010 OUTPUT 705;”*RST” Resets the master unit.
56 Remote Programming Writing to the Display You can include messages to the front panel LCD in your programs. The description o f DISP:T EXT in chap ter 7 shows the number and types of perm itted display characters.
Remote Programming 57 Assigning the GPIB Address In Programs The Agilent SAS address cannot be set remotely; it mu st be set from the front panel. Once the address is set, you can assign it inside programs. Refer to chapter 5 under “Setting the GPIB Address” for more information.
