6 user’ s gu ide NOTE: PCs use software drivers to control peripheral devices. When you add a Plug and Play (ready to use) peripheral, memory, or add-in card, the PC automatically loads the correct driver for the device.
setting up your pc 7 pc front The front of your computer has the drives, the On button and hard disk drive activity indicator light. Some PC models also have connectors on the front of the PC. IN IN G H K L A B C E F D connecting the modem The modem is used for connecting to an ISP that provides telephone dial-up connection to the Internet.
8 user’ s gu ide Check with your ISP for specifics on your connection. Before you can connect to the Inter net and send or receive e-mail and faxes using telephone dial-up, you must co nnect your telephone s ervice line to the modem, which is inside the PC.
setting up your pc 9 To connect the cable between the mo dem and the telephone service line: 1 Plug one end of a modem cable ( D ) into the modem co nnector ( A ) on the back of the PC ( C ). This connector may be labeled with either Line or a modem connector symbol.
10 user’ s guide To connect the Ethernet c onnector to the network: 1 Plug the network cable into the E thernet connector ( A ) on the back of the PC. WARNING: Do not plug the telephone service li ne cable or modem cable into the Ethernet connector.
setting up your pc 11 4 Click an option to select y our language (if applicable for your model). Click OK and then confirm your selection by clicking Ye s . W ait until the PC makes preparations. (It may take up to 30 minutes to set up the language on the PC.
12 user’ s guide standby mode When the PC is in standby mode, it goes into a low-power state and the monitor is blank as if it is turned off. The ad vantages of using sta ndby mode include: • Y ou save time and electricity w ithout having to wa it for the PC to go through the normal startup routine when you wake it again.
setting up your pc 13 hibernation mode When the PC is in hiber nation mode, it sa ves everything that is in PC memory to the hard disk drive, turns off the monitor and the hard disk drive, and then turns itself off. When you turn on the PC again, yo ur programs, folders, and documents are restored to the screen.
14 user’ s guide 7 Click the Power Schemes tab to set the timers for standby and hibernation. In the Power Schemes box, select a power scheme from the drop-down list. Choose the settings: • T o turn on automatic s tandby for the PC, click the time to elapse before standby (such as After 20 mins ) in the System stan dby list.

working with sound, pictures, and video 55 using the diskette (floppy) drive The diskette (floppy) drive is available on se lect model PCs. If your PC does not already have a diskette drive, you cannot add one to the PC chassis as an internal drive.
56 user’ s guide If you are connected to the Inte rnet when playing a music CD, MusicMatch Jukebox searches a CD databas e on the Internet, displays the song titles in the Playlist area, and then begins playing the CD.

With the TV-out feature, you can view the computer im ag e, watch DVD movies (if you have a DVD player), or play games o n your TV.
64 user’ s guide • If your TV has a composite video jack and your PC has a composite video jack, connect a composite video cable to the V ideo In jack on the TV to the composite video jack on the back of the PC.

Some options and menus in this procedure may be different for your PC. 1 Make sure the video and audio cables ar e connected before you turn on the TV and the PC.
66 user’ s guide disabling the tv option When you want to dis connect the TV from your PC , you may need to disable the TV option to return your PC display to its original resolution. 1 Right-click an empty area of the screen, and chose Properties .
taking care of your pc 67 pr otecting your pc from power surges Power surges, for example voltage spikes, power o utages, or brownouts ma y cause software problems. Symptoms of voltage sp ikes include a flickering video display, unexpected PC startups, and the PC not r esponding to your co mmands.
68 user’ s guide The virus-scanning program manufacturer provides free virus scan updates through your Internet connection for an initial period after your PC purchase. You can purchase a subscription serv ice for updates after the initial free period expires.

troubleshooting 75 hard disk drive Symptom Problem Solution PC seems to be locked up and not responding. Program in use has stopped responding to commands. Use the W indows T ask Manager to close any programs not responding or to Restart the PC: 1 Press the Ctrl , Alt , and Del keys on the keyboard at the same time.

Y ou can later return the PC to the settings recorded at the r estore point. Y ou can create a specific restor e point, or have the operating sy stem create a restor e point.

using application recover y and system recover y 85 using recover y cd-dvd creator Make recovery CDs or DVDs for your PC by using the Compaq Recovery CD-DVD Creator program before you experience any problem. The recovery discs set is a complete image of the original PC hard disk drive contents and is matched to your PC model number.

After you make the Compaq Recovery Tools CD, you can use it to: • Read instructions to use each utility on the Recovery T ools CD. • Start the System Recovery program from the r ecovery partition.

Remove the backup CD or diskette you’ve made. 2 Press the Eject button on the top disc drive, and wait for the tray to open.

98 user’ s guide • T o release a hard disk drive fr om the chassis of the 8000 series, slide the drive lock mechanism (1) to unlock the drive in the drive bay , remove the metal drive shield (2) by pressing and lifting the two tabs on one sid e of the shield, and then pull the drive out of the drive bay (3) .
upgrading and ser vicin g the pc 99 7 For the S0000 series 7-In-1 memory card reader , remove the reader from the drive bay adapter if the ad apter is not included with your replacement reader . Remove the two screws (left and right sides) that secure the reader to the adapter .
