2 23 Preparations Pr eparing the Power Supply Y ou can power the camcor der using a battery pack or dir ectly using the compact power adapter . If you connect the compact power adapter to the camcor der while a battery pack is attached, the c amcorder will dr aw power fro m the power outlet.
Preparing the Power Supply 24 • If there is a malfunction with the co mpact power adapter or battery pack, the charge in dicator will go out and charging wi ll stop. • For handling precautions regar d ing the battery pack, r efer to Battery Pack ( A 226).
25 Preparing the Power Supply Checking the Remaining Battery Charge With battery packs compatible with Intelligent System, you ca n check the estimated remaining usage time of the battery pack by l ooking at any r ecording/pla yback sc r een or the [Battery/Hour Meter ] status screen ( A 211).

27 Date, Time and Language Settings Date, Time and Language Settings Setti ng the Dat e and Time Y ou will need to set the date an d time of the camcorder befor e you can start using it. Wh en the camcord er’ s clock is not set, the [Date/Time] scre en will appear automatically with the day selected.

29 Using the Menus Using the Menus In mode, many of the camcorder’ s functions can be adjusted fr om the menu for genera l settings, which opens after pr essing the MENU button. Y ou can also re gister frequently used menu settings in a customized submenu (My Menu) for easy acce ss.

Attaching the Micr ophone Holder Unit Use the supplied screw s to attach the microphone holder unit to the hand le.
33 Preparing the Camcorde r Attachi ng and Deta ching the Eye Cu p Attach the eye cup so th at it cov ers the rubber portion of the viewf inder unit. • For left eye use, attach the eye cup so that the protr uding portion faces the opposite side. Detach the eye cu p as shown in the illustration.

Even whe n [OLED/ VF Simul .] is set to [Off], clo sing the OLED pan el will automatically activ ate the viewfinder .

39 Preparing Re cording Media Inserting a CF Car d Y ou can insert a CF car d into CF card slot A or slot B. If yo u have two CF car ds, you can use both slots. 1 Sl ide down the CF ca rd slot co ver swit ch and open the CF ca rd slot co ver . 2 Insert the CF card str aight, with the label facing away from the lens, all the way i nto the slot.

43 Preparing Re cording Media Checking the Available Recor ding Time on a Reco r ding Media In mode, the upper left of the scre en will show the icon of the r ecording media that is in use and next to it the approxim ate remaining r ecordi ng time in minutes*.

3 47 Recording Recor ding Video This section explains the r ecording basic s. Before you begi n r ecording, m ake a test recor ding first to check if the camcor der operates corr ectly . Record an M XF clip for a ppr oximately 6 minutes at 50 Mbps and an MP4 clip for approxim ately 20 minutes at 35 Mbps ( A 55).
Recordin g Video 48 Recording 1 Hold down the button on the Q switch and slide t he swi tch to CA MERA. • The camcorder turns on in m ode and enters record pause mode. • The access indicators of card slot s with recor ding media wi ll illuminate momenta rily in red.
49 Recording V ideo • Y ou can use [ w Other Functi ons] > [Review Rec ording] ( A 114) to revi ew part or all of the last clip r ecord ed. • If you set an assignable butt on to [Add $ Mark] or [Add % Mark] ( A 127), you can press the button to add an $ mark or % mark to the last MXF clip r ecorded.

55 Video Config uration: Movie Format, Bit Rate, Resolution and Frame Rat e Video Configuration: Movie Format, Bit Rate, Resolution and Frame Rate Before y ou recor d, select the movie format, bit rate, r esolu tion (frame size) and frame rate that best match your creativ e needs.
Video Configuration: Movie Format, Bit Rate, Resolution and Frame Rate 56 Selecting the Frame Rate When [Bit Rate/Resolution] is set to [35 Mbps 1440x1080 ] (MXF clips), the frame rate is set aut omatically and can not be changed. The frame rate of MP4 clips is alway s set automatically and it cannot be changed.
57 Changing Main Camera Functions with the Joystick Changing Main Camera Functions with the Joystick Y ou can adjust three main camera fu nctions –shutter sp eed, white balanc e and gain– using on ly the joystick (direct setting m ode). This section will explain the basic operation of the dir ect setting mode.
Shutter Sp eed 58 Shutter Speed Set the shutter speed based on the reco rding conditions . For example, you may want to set slower shutter speeds in darker envir onments. The cam corder offers the following 6 mo des. OFF: The camcord er uses a stan dar d shutter speed based on the frame rate.
59 Shutter Speed Autom atic Shut ter Using the Joystick 1 Set t he SHU TTER sw itch to ON. 2 Pr ess SE T and pus h the j oysti ck left /right until the shu tter s peed mo de icon is hi ghligh ted in orange . 3 Push the joystick up/down to select the icon and then p ress SET .
Shutter Sp eed 60 Manua l Shut ter When the shutter speed mode is set to manual, you can select to adjust the shutte r as a shutter speed, angle value, clear scan fr equency or slow shu tter speed accordi ng to your shooting needs. Changing the Shutter Speed Mode and Valu e 1 Set the SHUTT ER switch to ON.
61 Shutter Speed NOTES • Closing down the apertur e when reco r ding under brig ht conditions may cause the pictur e to appear soft or o ut of focus. T o avoid the loss of sharpness due to dif fractio n, use a faster shutter speed or open up the aper ture ( A 65).
Gain 62 Gain Depending on the shooting conditions you may want to ad just the brightn ess of the ima ge. Y ou can do so by changing the gain value to adjust th e sensitivity of the sensor .
63 Gain Setting the Gain Limi t (AGC Limit) For each g ain position, you ca n activate the gai n limit to prevent the camcorder from setting a level higher than a preset lim it between 0 dB an d 27 dB. When you set the camcor der to full auto mode ( A 49) or infrared mode ( A 124), [AGC Limit] will be set to [Of f/27 dB].
Gain 64 NOTES • When the gain and apertur e are set to m anual and th e shutter speed mode is not set to [Automatic], the exposure bar will app ear on the scr een ( A 67).
65 Aperture Apertur e Y ou can affect the brig htness of your reco rdings or ch ange the depth of field by adjusting the ape rture. For example, use a sm all aperture value for a shallow depth of field that isolates the subject in focus and nicely blurs the backgr ound.
Aper tu re 66 Manual Aperture Usin g the Ir is Rin g 1 Set the IRIS (ND) switch to M. • will appear on the screen next to the aperture value. 2 T urn the i ris rin g to ad just the a pertur e. • The aperture value displayed on the screen will change in 1/4-st op incr ements.
67 Aperture ND Filter At default settings, the camco rder’ s ND f ilter is activated au tomatically depending on the apertur e value. T he ND filter is first activ ated when you clos e down the aperture to F4.0 ([ND 1/2] will appear on the scr een).
Aper tu re 68 Light Me tering Mode Select the light metering mode to match the recor ding co nditions. Usin g the appro priat e setting will ensur e that the camcor der obtains the most suitable exposur e level wh e n either the aperture, shutter speed or gain is set automatically by the cam corder .
69 White Balance White Balance The camcor der uses an electr onic white balance pr ocess to calibrate the pictur e and ensure accurate colo rs under differ ent lighting conditions. Ther e ar e 4 methods of setting the white balance. Auto white balanc e (AWB): The cam corder automatically adjusts the white balance to the optimal level.
White Balance 70 Auto White Balance (AWB ) The camcor der constantly adjusts the white balance autom atically to achieve an optimal level. The cam corder will adjust the white bala nce if the light sou rce chang es. Using the Joystick 1 Set the WHITE BAL.
71 White Balance Pre set White Balance/Color T emperatur e The camcor der features two preset white bal ance se ttings for recor ding outdoors (daylight) and indoors (incandescent light).
White Balance 72 Custom Wh ite Balance Y ou can store two custom white balance settings in the camc order for r ecording under more dif ficult lighting conditions. Using the Joystick 1 Set the WHITE BAL. switc h to A or B. 2 Press SET and push the joys tick left/right unti l the whit e bala nce ic on is h ighli ghte d in o range.
73 White Balance 4 Pr ess [ Å ]. • If a custom white balance has not yet been stor ed, [ Å ] will f lash slowly . • During the pro cedure, [ Å ] will f lash quickly . When it stops flas hing, the procedur e is completed and the setting will be applie d on the camcord er .
Zooming 74 Zooming Y ou can operate the zoom (optical zo om 20x) using the zoom r ocker on th e side grip or the one on the h andle. Y ou can also use the zoom ring on the lens or th e zoom buttons on the supplied wireless contr oller .
75 Zooming Using the Zoom Ring Zoom in an d out on a subject by t urning the zoom ring . The zoom speed depends on how fast you tur n the zoom ring. NOTES • Y ou can change the direction of the adju.
Zooming 76 Setting the Zoom Speed Refer to the followi ng table for approxim ate zoom speeds of the entir e zoom range (end to end). 1 Open the zoom [Speed Level] submenu. [ ~ Camera S etup] > [Zoom] > [Speed Level] 2 Sel ect [Fast ], [No rmal] or [Slow] and the n press SE T .

Using Optional Conversion Lenses 80 Using Optional Conversion Lenses Y ou can use the following optional conv ersion lenses with this camcorder . 81 Adjusting the Focus Adjusting the Focus The camcor der of fers 3 ways to focus. When yo u use manual focus, you can use focus assistance functions, such as peaking and magni fication, to help you focus mor e accurately . Autofocus (AF): The camcorder conti nuously adjusts the focus automatica lly .
Adjusting the Focus 82 Setting the Au tofocus Mode Y ou can select how fast the cam cor der focuses using autofocus. 1 Open the AF mode’ s [Speed] submenu. [ ~ Camera S etup] > [AF Mode] > [Speed] 2 Sel ect the desired opt ion and then press SET .
83 Adjusting the Focus Manual Focus (MF) Using the Focus Ri ng 1 Set the FOCUS swit ch to M. • A appears on the left of the scr een. 2 T ur n the focus ring on the lens to adju st the focus. • Focusing speed w ill depend on how you operate the foc us ring.
Adjusting the Focus 84 - The corr ect subject distance will not be displayed when an optional conversion lens is attached. • If you operate the zoom after focusing, the focus on the su bject may be lost. • If you focus manually and then leave the camcorder w ith the power turned on, the focus on the subje ct may be lost after a whil e.
85 Adjusting the Focus NOTES • Peaking/Magnificatio n appears only on the c amcorder scr een. It will not appear on an extern al monitor connected to the cam corder and wi ll not affect yo ur recor dings.
Adjusting the Focus 86 Options [Face Priority] : When ther e is no face detected, the camcord er focuses au tomatically on the subject a t the center of the scr een. [Face Only] : When t here is no face d etected, t he camcor der is set t o manual focus.
87 Image Stabilizer Image Stabilizer Use the image stabilizer to compensate for cam corder shake in order to achieve steadier shots. There a re 3 methods of image stabilization; select the method th at best suits your needs.
Onscr een Markers and Zebra Patterns 88 Onscr een Markers and Zebra Patterns Using onscr een markers allows you to make sur e your su bject is correctly framed an d is within the appr opriate safe area. The z ebra patterns help you identify ar eas that are overexposed.
89 Onscr een Markers and Zebra Patterns NOTES • Y ou can turn off all other onscr een disp lays, lea ving only the onscr een markers ( A 53). • If you set an assignable button to [Markers] ( A 127), you can press the button to turn the onscreen markers on/ off.
Setting the Time Code 90 Setting the Time Code In mode, the camcor der can generate a tim e code si gnal and embed it in M XF clips. Y ou can have the camcorder o utput the time code signal fr om the 3G/HD - SDI terminal*, MON. terminal* or TIME CODE terminal* ( A 95).
91 Setting the Time Code • T o rese t the time code to [00:0 0:00:00], select [Reset ] instead. If the running mode is set to [Free Run], the time code w ill be reset the mom ent you press SET and keep ru nning continuously f rom 00 :00:00:00. 3 Push the joystick up/down to set the hours and then press SET to move to the minutes.
Setting the Us er Bit 92 Setting the User Bit The user bit display can be selected from the date or the time of recor ding, or an identification code consisting of 8 characters in the hexadecimal system. T here ar e sixteen possible characte rs: the numbers 0 to 9 and the letters A to F .
93 Synchronizing with an External Device Synchr onizing with an External Device Using Genlock synchronization, y ou can synchronize this ca mcor der’ s video signal to that of an external video device. Similarly , using an external time code signal, you can synchronize this camcor der’ s time code to the external signal.
Synchronizing with an External Device 94 NOTES •W h e n [ ¢ Video S etup] > [3G/HD-SDI] is set to [Dir ect], the camcorder will synchr onize with a Genloc k signal that has the same fre quenc y as that used for rec ording. • When a suitable G enlock signal is in put, the Genl ock synchro nization stabilizes after approximately 10 seconds.
95 Synchronizing with an External Device Refer ence Video Signal Output After changing the GE NLOCK/SYNC OUT term inal’ s functi on to [SYNC Output], you can output the camcorder’ s video signal as a refer ence sync signal (HD tri-level sig n al) to synchronize an external device to this camcor der .
Recording Audio 96 Rec or ding A udi o The camcor der features 4 -channel or 2-channel linear PCM audio r ecording and playback for MXF clips and 2-channel AAC audio r ecording a nd playback for MP4 c lips. The sampling f requency is 4 8 kHz for all au dio recor ding modes.
