Preparations 19 Preparations This chapter desc ribes basic op erations, such as using the touch panel, navigati ng the menus, and firs t time settings to help you learn more about your camcorder . Getting Started Charging the Battery P ack The camcorder can be power ed with a battery pack or directly using the compact power adapte r .
20 Preparations 5 C harging will start when the camcorder is turned off. • If the camcorder was on, the green ON/OFF (CHG) indicator will go out when you turn off the camcorder . After a moment, the ON/OFF (CHG) indicator will star t flashi ng in red (battery pack charging).
Preparations 21 • T o prevent equipment br eakdowns an d excessive heating, do no t con- nect the supplied compact power adapter to voltage converters for overseas travels or special power so ur ces such as those on aircraft and ships, DC-AC inverters, etc.
22 Preparations Preparing the Accessories Wireless Controll er First, insert the supplied CR2025 lithium button battery into the wire- less contr oller . 1 Press the tab in the direction of the arrow and pull out the battery holder . 2 Place the lithium button battery with the + side facing up.
Preparations 23 Grip Belt and Str aps Fasten the grip belt. Adjust the grip belt so that you can reach the zoom lever with your index finger , and the g button with your thumb. To remove the gr ip belt 1 Lift the padded handgrip's flap and detach the strap from the V elcro pad.
24 Preparations To attach an optional wrist strap Pass the attaching end of the wrist strap through the r ear b racket on the camcorder , thread the wrist strap through the loop and fasten. Y ou can also attach the wrist strap to the strap mount on the grip belt to use both for extra convenience a nd protec tion.
Preparations 25 NOTES • About the LCD scree n: The screen is produced using extremely high-pre- cision manufacturing tech niques, with more than 99.99% of the pixels operating to specification. Less than 0.01% of the pixels may occasion- ally misfire or appear as black, red, blue or gr een dots.
26 Preparations Basic Operation of the Camcorder Using the T ouch Screen The control buttons and me nu items that appea r on the touch screen change dynamicall y depending on the operatin g mode and the task you are performing. With the intuitive touch sc ree n interface you have all the contr ols at your fingertips .
Preparations 27 Operating Modes Recording When recording video or photos, the cam corder’ s ope rating mode is determined by the position of the mode switch and the onscr een con- trol buttons. * The mode icon displayed will change according to the optimal mode selected by the Smart AUTO function ( 0 39).
28 Preparations NOTES • When switching to a playback mode, the memory selected for playback will be the same currently used for recor ding. • Y ou can also press and hold B on the wireless controller for more than 2 seconds to switch between recording and playback mode.

30 Preparations First Time Settings Setting the Date and Time Y ou will need to set the date and time of the camcorder before you can star t using it. The [D ate/Time] s creen will appear automaticall y when the cam- corder’ s clock is not set. When the [Date/Time] scr een appears, the year will be s elected.
Preparations 31 Changing the Language The default language of the camcor der is English. Y ou can set it to one of 26 other languages. * Only when performing the procedure in a recording mode. NOTES • Some control buttons, such as [ZOOM], [FUNC.
32 Preparations Using a Memory Card Memory Cards Compatible for Use with the Camcorder Y ou can use comm ercia lly available Secur e Digital (SD) car ds with this camcor der . However , depending on the memory car d, you may not be able to recor d movies.
Preparations 33 SDXC Memory Cards As of May 2010, SDXC memory cards have been tested to work under Windows 7. For details on whether your computer's o perating system is SDXC-com patible, check with your computer's manufa cturer .
34 Preparations Inserting and Removing a Memor y Card Make sure to initialize ( 0 36) all memory car ds be fore using them with this camcorder . 1 T urn off the camcorder . Make sure the ON/OFF (CHG) indi cator is off. 2 O pen the memory card slot cover .
Preparations 35 POINTS TO CHECK • Be sure you understand the i nformation provided in Eye-Fi Cards ( 0 33) before using an Eye-Fi card. * When selecting the memory , you can c heck the ap proximate availabl e recording time/number of photo s, based on curr ently used settin gs.

38 Dual Shot Mode Dual Shot Mode This chapter cove rs how to easily record video and photos in the all-automatic Dual S hot mode, and how to use basic sh oot- ing functions like zoom and Quic k Start. T o enjoy full ac cess to menus and mor e advanced functi ons, refer to the relevant chapters for vi deo ( 0 54) and photos ( 0 100).

40 Dual Shot Mode IMPORT ANT • Observe the following precautions while the ACCESS indicator is on or flashing. Failing to do so may result in permanent data loss or damage to the memory . - Do not open the memory card slot cover . - Do not disconnect the power source or tur n off the camcor der .
Dual Shot Mode 41 • Be sure to save your recor dings regularly ( 0 121), especially after making important recor d ings. Canon shall not be liable for any loss or corruption of data. • When recor ding photos on an Eye-Fi card, photos will be uploaded automatically if you are within the ra nge of a configured network.
42 Dual Shot Mode Zooming There a re thr ee ways you can zoom in and out: using the zo om lever on the camcorder , using the zoom buttons on the wireless controller or using the zoom controls on the touch scr een. In addition to th e 15x optical zoom *, in mode, you can tur n on the 300x digital zoom with the 7 8 [Digital Zoom] setting.
Dual Shot Mode 43 2 T ouch the zoom controls to operate the zoom. T ouch anywher e within the Q area to zoom out or anywhere within the P area to zoom in. T ouch closer to the center for a slow zoom; touch closer to the e / d icons for faster zooms.
44 Dual Shot Mode 2 When you wish to resume recording, open the LCD panel. The ON/OFF (CHG) indicat or turns b ack green and the camcorder is ready to recor d. IMPORT ANT • Do not disconnect the power source during standby mode (while the ON/OFF (CHG) indicator is lit in orange).

50 Video 3D Flip View 3D Flip Vi ew is a fun way to display yo ur video r ecordings (original scenes) in a 3D layout, or ganized by recording date. In any index screen, touch [ b ] 8 [3D Flip View] . During single photo view , touch the screen once to display the controls then touch [ Q ] to open the [Photos] index screen.
Video 51 Narrowing Down the Scenes Shown in the Index Screen From the [Orig inal] index scr e en, you can narr ow down the scenes shown, leaving only scen es that were recor ded on a specific date or only those scenes in which peo ple's faces were detected.
52 Video 2 O pen the calendar screen. • Dates that contain scenes (that i s, movie s were r ecorded on that date) appear in black against a silver background. Dates without recordings appear grayed out. •T o u c h [ y ] or [ A ] to jump to the previous/next calendar month that contains recordings.
Video 53 • T o select all the scenes at once : T ouch [Select All] instead of touching individual scenes. (Rem ove in advance any checkmarks from scenes you may have selected individually .) 4 Delete the scenes. * T ouch [Stop] to interr upt the operat ion while it is in pro gress .
54 Video Advanced Functions Shooting Video in y Manual Mode When the mode switch is set to y (Manual mode), you can enjoy full access to the menus and manually adjust the exposur e, focus, white balance and many mor e of the camcorder's setti ngs to your prefer- ence.
Video 55 NOTES • The zoom, Quick Start function, po wer s aving modes, etc. operate the same way in mode as in mode. For deta ils, refer to Dual Shot Mode ( 0 38). Selecting the Video Quality (Recording Mode) Th e c am c ord er off er s 5 rec o rdin g mo de s.
56 Video Special Scene Recording Programs Recording in a very bright ski resort or capturing the full colors of a sunset or a fi reworks display become s as easy as s electing a S pecial Scene recording program. Approximate recording times Default value 1 Recorded in 1,920 x 1,080 r esolution.
Video 57 Options ( Default value) [ F Portrait] The camcorder uses a large aper- ture, to achieve a shar p focus on the subject while blurring the background. [ G Sports] T o recor d sports sc enes such as tennis or golf. [ q Night Scene] T o recor d nightscap es with lower noise.
58 Video NOTES •[ F Portrait]/[ G Sports]/[ I Snow]/[ J Beach]: Th e picture may not appear smooth during playback. •[ F Portrait]: The blur effect of the bac kground increases the mor e you zoom in ( P ). •[ I Snow]/[ J Beach]: The subject may become overexposed on cloudy days or in shaded places .
Video 59 recor dings while on land, we recommend usin g the [ s Surface] recording pr ogram. - T o switch the recording program between [ r Underwater] and [ s Surface] while the camcorder is in the waterproof case, turn on the camcorder while holding j pre ssed down.
60 Video To change the fram e rate Advanced Image Stabilization The image stabil izer reduces camcor der blur (blur due to the cam- corder moving) so you can get nice , stable shots. S elect the image s ta- bilization mode according to the shooting conditions.
Video 61 NOTES • If the degree of camcorder shake is too high, the image stabilizer may not be ab le to fully compen sate. • Power ed IS is not available in mode. • For surveying and foll owing shots, when you p an the camcorder from side to side or tilt it up and down, we recommend setting the IS mode to [ P Dynamic] or [ Q Standard].
62 Video 1 Activate the pre-recor ding function. • d appears. • Repeat, selecting [ B Off], to tur n off pre-r ecording. 2 Press g . The scene recorded in the memory will start 3 seconds before g was pressed. NOTES • While pre-r ecording is activated, the camcorder will not emit any notifi- cation sounds.
Video 63 By default, face detection is activa ted. If the function was turn ed off, per- form the following pro cedure to turn it on. T o select the main s ubject If there is mor e than one person in the picture, the camcor der will auto- matically select one person it determ ines is the ma in subject.
64 Video T ouch & T rack When recor ding people, face detection will track the main subject and keep it always i n focus. But also when recording other mov ing subjects such as your pet, a moving v ehicle or people no t facing the camera directl y , you can use T ouch & T rack to keep your subject in fo cus at all times.
Video 65 1P r e s s z . • A blue border appears on the screen. • Press z again to return to normal video recording mode. 2P r e s s g . • By default, the camcorder recor ds for about 4 seconds (the blue frame serves as a visual progress bar) and then automatically returns to record pause mode.
66 Video To fade in/out Press g in recor d pause mode ( M ) to start recording with a fade in. Pr ess g while recor ding ( N ) to fade out and pause the reco rding. Options ( Default value) NOTES • When you apply a fader , not only the pictur e b ut also th e sound wi ll fade in or out.
Video 67 Options ( Default value) NOTES •[ B Shutter -Pri. AE]: - On screen only the denomi nator is displayed – [ B 250] indicates a shutter speed of 1/250 sec ond, etc.
68 Video Shutter Speed and Ap erture V alue Guidelines X With slower shutter speed you can add a nice motion blur and sense of movement. With faster shutter speeds you can “freeze th e action” for powerful images of moving subjects. W X With small aperture values only the subject is in focus and the background is softly blurred.
Video 69 Manual Exposure Adjustment At times, backlit subjects may appe ar too dark (underexposed) or sub- jects under very str ong lights may appear too bright or gl aring (overex- posed).
70 Video NOTES • If the recording pr ogram is change d during exposure lock, the cam- corder will return to automatic exposur e. • When shooting subj ects with a strong light source behind them, the camcorder automatically corrects for th e backlight.
Video 71 POINTS TO CHECK • Adjust the zoom before you start the procedure. 1 Open the manual foc us screen. 2 T ouch a subject that app ears inside the X frame. • The T ouch AF mark ( P ) will fl ash and the focusing distan ce will be adjusted automatically .
72 Video White Balance The white balance f unction helps yo u to accurately reproduce colors under differ ent lighting conditions so that white objects will always look truly white in your recor dings. POINTS TO CHECK • Select a record ing program other th an the Special Scene r e cording pr o - grams.
Video 73 NOTES • When you select the custom white balance: -S e t 7 8 [Digital Zoom] to [ B Off]. - Reset the white balance when you ch ange locations or the lighting or other conditio ns change. - Depending on the light source, g may keep flashing.

80 Video Using the Mini Advanced Shoe Using the mini advanced shoe, you ca n attach to the camcor der a range of optional ac cessories to ex pand its functionality . For details about optional acc essories available for use with your camcorder , refer to Accessories ( 0 188).
Video 81 Using the SM-V1 Surround Mi cropho ne or DM-100 Directional Stereo Microphone Using the SM-V1 you can add a sense of depth and presence to your recor dings with 5.1ch surround sound. Using the DM-100 you can accurately record audio coming di rectly from the direction you are recor ding.
82 Video • Playing back recordin gs made with the optional SM-V 1 Surround Micro- phone: Y ou can enjoy 5.1ch surround sound playback on HDTVs com- patible with 5.1ch surr ound sound connected to the camcorder using an HDMI cable. Audio ou tput from the A V OUT/ X terminal (inclu ding headphone output) will be converted to 2ch stereo.
Video 83 NOTES • In mode, the only available func tions are tur ning the power on/off, starting/stopping a recording, and zoom. Selecting the Playback Starting Point If you have a very long sc ene, you may want to start playing back the scene from a certain poi nt.
84 Video To change the interva l between frames T o display changes in the scene’ s main s ubject • The timeline ruler wi ll show frames taken fr o m the scene every time the main subject detected by the camcorder changed.
Video 85 Playing Back Scenes Set to Background Music Y ou can play back video snapshot sc enes, scenes in the playlis t and photo slideshows set to ba ckground music (instead of the original sound). Y ou can use o ne of the supplied musi c tracks or connec t an external audio player to use y our favorite songs as background music.
86 Video 3 Back in the index screen, touch a scene to start the pl ayback set to the selected music track. In mode, touch a photo to go to single photo view and continue with the slideshow procedure ( 0 108). To delete a music track In the music track sel ection scre en, touch [ Z ] or [ O ] to select th e track you want to delete.
Video 87 2 Activa te the external audio input. 3 Connect the exter nal player to the camcorder's MIC terminal. 4 Adjust the audio input as necessary . • Start the music playback on the exte rnal player and adjust its volume according to the onscreen indications.
88 Video NOTES • Y ou can also add to th e playlist just the vide o snaps hot scenes you want to watch and arrange their playback order . • Initializing a memory card will permanently erase any music files you may have transferred from the supp lied Camcor der Supplemental Disc to the card.

90 Video Playlist and Scene Operations Editing the Playlist: Adding, Deleting, Moving and Playing Back Create a playlist to play back onl y the scenes you prefer and in the order of y our choice. Y ou can play back the scenes in the pla ylist using your favorite so ng as background music ( 0 85).
Video 91 • Y ou can copy scenes from the built-in memory to the memory card ( 0 121) to include in the memory ca rd’ s playlis t also scenes that were originally recor ded in the built-in memory . Deleting Scenes from the Playlist Deleting scenes from the playlist will not affect your or iginal r ecordings.
92 Video Capturing Photos and Video Snapshot Scenes fro m a Movie Y ou can captur e video sn apshot scenes, single photo s or a series of continuous photos fr om a pre viously rec orded scene .
Video 93 NOTES • A video snapshot scene can be captu red only during playback; it c an- not be captured during pl ayback pause mod e. • The captured video snapshot scene is sa ved to the same memory that contains the source scene. • Video snapshot scenes cannot be ca ptured from any of the following types of scenes.
