Safety Precautions 10 Other Warnings • Avoid dropping or subjecting the battery to severe impacts. The above may cause explosions or leaks, result ing in fi re, injury and damage to t he surroundings.
Safety Precautions 11 Caution • Do not aim the camera at bright light sources (the sun, etc.). Doing so may cause malfunctions or damage the image sensor. • When using the camera on a beac h or at a windy location, be careful not to allow dust or sand to enter the camera.

13 1 Getting Started This chapter explains preparations before shooting, how to shoot in A mode, and then how to view and erase the images you take. The latter part of this chapter explains how to shoot and view movies and how to transfer images to a computer.
14 Use the incl uded charge r to charge th e battery . Be sure to ch arge the batt ery as it is not c harged at the ti me of purchas e. Remove the cover. Insert the battery. ∆ Align t he o marks on the ba ttery and charger, t hen inse rt the bat tery by sliding i t in and down .
Charging the Battery 15 Approximate Number of Sho ts That Can Be Taken • The number of shots th at can be taken is based on the Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA) measurement standard. • Under some shooting co nditions, the number of shots that can be taken may be less than mentioned above.

Inserting the Battery and Memory Card 18 Removing the Bat tery and Memory Ca rd Remove t he battery. ∆ Open the cover and pr ess the battery lo ck in the direc tion of the ar row. The batte ry will pop up. Remove the memory card. ∆ Push the memory ca rd in until you hear a click, then slowly relea se it.
19 The Date/Time se ttings screen will appear th e first time the c amera is turned on. Since th e dates and time s recorded int o your image s are based on the se settings, b e sure to s et them. Turn on the camera. ∆ Press th e power butt on. The Date/Time scr een will appe ar.
Setting the Date and Time 20 Changing the Date and Time You can change the curren t date and time settings. Display the menu. ∆ Press th e n button. 22 Before you us e a new memory car d or one that ha s been format ted in other devices, y ou should for mat the ca rd with this came ra. Formattin g (initial izing) a memory card erases all data on th e memory card. As you canno t retrieve the erased da ta, exerc ise adequate caution be fore formatting the memory card.
23 To take imag es that are i n focus, be sure to fir st press the shutter butt on lightly (hal fway) to focu s, then pre ss fully to shoot. Press halfway (lightly to focus). ∆ Press li ghtly unti l the camera be eps twice and AF frames app ear where th e camera focused.
24 Since the ca mera can dete rmine the subj ect and shoot ing conditi ons, you can let it automa tically select the best se ttings for t he scene and ju st shoot. The camera can a lso detect and focus on faces, setti ng the color a nd brightne ss to optimal le vels.
Taking Pictures (Smart Auto) 25 When the camera focuses , it will beep twice and AF frames will ap pear wher e the camera focuse d. Several AF fr ames will appea r when the camera focuse s on more than one point. Shoot. ∆ Press the shutte r button ful ly to shoot.
Taking Pictures (Smart Auto) 26 • What if whit e and gray frames appear when you point the camera toward a subject? When faces are detected, a white frame appears on th e face of the main subject, while gray frames appear on o ther detected faces. The frames will follow the subjects withi n a certain range.
27 You can view th e images you ha ve taken on the screen. Enter Playback mode. ∆ Press th e 1 button. The last i mage you took will appear. Choose an image. ∆ Pressi ng q or turni ng the – dial countercloc kwise will cycle throug h the images in the r everse order they were taken, from t he newest image to the oldes t.
28 You can choose and erase ima ges one at a time. Please note t hat erased images canno t be recover ed. Exercis e adequate caut ion before e rasing an image. Enter Playback mode. ∆ Press th e 1 button. The last i mage you took will appear. Choose an image to erase .
29 The camera can aut omaticall y select all se ttings so that you can shoot movi es just by pres sing the shut ter butto n. The audio wi ll record in stereo. If you continue shooting for a long time, the camera may beco me warm. This is not a malf unction.
Shooting Movies 30 Recording will start, a nd [ Rec] and the elapsed time will appear on the screen . ∆ Once shooting be gins, take your fing er off the shutter but ton. ∆ If you change t he compositi on of your shot during shoot ing, the fo cus, brightnes s and tone will automatica lly adjust.

Viewing Movies 32 • Instal l the included software (p. 34). • When wat ching a movie on a computer, fr ames may drop, it may not play smoothly, and the au dio may stop suddenly depen ding on the comput er’s capabilities.
33 You can use the incl uded software to transfer i mages you have sh ot with the camera to a computer for vi ewing. If you are al ready using ZoomBr owser EX/ImageBr owser, i nstall the so ftware from the inclu ded CD-ROM, overwri ting your current instal lation.

Zooming in More Closely on Subjects (Digital Zoom) 66 Digital Tele -Converter The foca l length of the len s can be inc reased by an equiva lent of 1. 4x or 2.3 x. This enables a fast er shutter spee d and less chance of ca mera shake than the zoom (inc luding digi tal zoom) u sed by itself at the same zoom fa ctor.

Changing the Color and Shooting 96 Color Swa p You can swap one color in an image for a nother when recording it . You can only swap one c olor. Choose Y . ∆ Follow Steps 1 – 2 on p. 5 4 to choose Y . Press the n button for more than one second. The unchanged image and the Color Swap image will bo th display.
