Preparations 19 Preparations This chapter desc ribes basic o perations, such as using the touch panel, navigati ng the menus, and firs t time settings to help you learn more about your camcorder . Getting Started Charging the Battery P ack The camcorder can be power ed with a battery pack or directly using the compact power adapter .
20 Preparations 5 Charging will start when the camcorder is turned off. • If the camcorder was on, the green ON/OFF (CHG) indicator will go out when you turn off the camcorder . After a moment, the ON/OFF (CHG) indicator will star t flashi ng in red (battery pack charging).
Preparations 21 • T o prevent equipment breakdowns an d excessive heating, do not con- nect the supplied compact power adapter to voltage converters for overseas travels or special power so ur ces such as those on aircraft and ships, DC-AC inverters, etc.
22 Preparations Preparing the Accessories Wireless Controll er First, insert the supplied CR2025 lithium button battery into the wire- less contr oller . 1 Press the tab in the direction of the arrow and pull out the battery holder . 2 Place the lithium bu tton battery with the + side facing up.
Preparations 23 Grip Belt and Straps Fasten the grip belt. Adjust the grip belt so that you can reach the zoom lever with your index finger , and the g butt on with your thumb. To remove the gr ip belt 1 Lift the padded handgrip's flap and detach the strap fr om the V elcro pad.
24 Preparations To attach an optional wrist strap Pass the attaching end of the wrist strap through the r ear b racket on the camcorder , thread the wrist strap through the loop and fasten. Y ou can also attach the wrist strap to the strap mount on the grip belt to use both for extra convenience a nd protectio n.
Preparations 25 NOTES • About the LCD scree n: The screen is produced using extremely high-pre- cision manufacturing tech niques, with more than 99.99% of the pixels operating to specification. Less than 0.01% of the pixels may occasion- ally misfire or appear as black, red, blue or gr een dots.
26 Preparations Basic Operation of the Camcorder Using the T ouch Screen The control buttons and me nu items that appea r on the touch screen change dynamically depe nding on the operating mode and the task you are performing. With the intuitive touch sc ree n interface you have all the contr ols at your fingertips .

Operating Modes Recording When recording video or photos, the c amcorder’ s ope rating mode is determined by the position of the mode switch and the onscr een con- trol buttons.
28 Preparations NOTES • a When switching to a playback mode, the memory selected for playback will be the same currently used for recor ding. • Y ou can also press and hold B on the wireless controller for mor e than 2 seconds to switch between recording and playback mode.

30 Preparations NOTES • A small font size is used in menu screens so you can see the options currently selected. Y ou can enla rge the font size by setting 6 8 [Font Size] to [ A Large] but only the icons of the currently selected options will appear on the screen.
Preparations 31 First Time Settings Setting the Date and Time Y ou will need to set the date and time of the camcor der before you can start using it. The [Date/ Time] scr een will appear automati cally when the cam - corder’ s clock is not set.
32 Preparations Changing the Language The default language of the camcorder is English. Y ou can set it to one of 26 other languages. * Only when performing the pr ocedure in a r ecording mode. NOTES • Some control buttons, su ch as [ZOOM], [FUNC.
Preparations 33 Using a Memory Card Memor y Cards Compatible for Use with the Camcorder Y ou can use comm ercially available SDHC (SD high c apacity) memory cards and SD memory c a rds with this camcor der . How- ever , depe nding on the memo ry card , you may not be able to r ecord movies.
34 Preparations Inserting and Removing a Memor y Card Make sure to initialize ( 0 36) all me mory cards be for e using them with this camcorder . 1 T ur n off the camcorder . Make sure the ON/OFF (C HG) indicator is off. 2 Open the memory card slot cover .
Preparations 35 POINTS TO CHECK • Be sure you understand t he information provided in Eye-Fi Cards ( 0 33) before using an Eye-Fi card. * When selecting t he memory , you can c heck the approximate availab le recording time/number of photos, base d on currently used settings.

38 Dual Shot Mode Dual Shot Mode This chapter cov ers how to easily record video and photos in the all-automatic Dual Shot mode, and how to use basic shoo t- ing functions like zoom and Quic k Start. 40 Dual Shot Mode IMPORT ANT • Observe the following precautions while the ACCESS indicator is on or flashing. Failing to do so may result in permanent data loss or damage to the memory . - Do not open the memory card slot cover . - Do not disconnect the power source or tur n off the camcor d er .
Dual Shot Mode 41 • Be sure to save your recor dings regularly ( 0 121), esp ecially after making important recor d ings. Canon shall not be liable for any loss or corruption of data. • When recor ding photos on an Eye- Fi card, photos will be uploaded automatically if you are within the ra nge of a configured network.
42 Dual Shot Mode Zooming There a re thr ee ways you can zoom in and out: using the zoom lever on the camcorder , using the zoom buttons on the wireless controller or using the zoom controls on the touch scr een. In addition to th e 15x optical zoom *, in mode, you can tur n on the 300x digital zoom with the 7 8 [Digital Zoom] setting.
Dual Shot Mode 43 2 T ouch the zoom controls to operate the zoom. T ouch anywher e within the Q area to zoom out or anywhere within the P area to zoom in. T ouch closer to the center for a slow zoom ([Speed 1]); touch clos er to the e / d icons for faster zooms ([Speed 3]).
44 Dual Shot Mode 2 When you wish to resume recording, open the LCD panel. The ON/OFF (CHG) indicat or turns b ack green and the camcorder is ready to recor d. IMPORT ANT • Do not disconnect the power source during standby mode (while the ON/OFF (CHG) indicator is lit in orange).

50 Video 3D Flip View 3D Flip View is a fun way to display your video r ecordings ( original scenes) in a 3D layout, or ganized by recording date. In any index screen, touch [ b ] 8 [3D Flip View]. During single photo view , touch the screen once to display the controls then touch [ Q ] to open the [Photos] index screen.
Video 51 Narrowing Down the Scenes Shown in the Index Screen From the [Orig inal] index scr een, you can narr ow down the scenes shown, leaving only scen es that were recor ded on a specific date or only those scenes in which peo ple's faces wer e detected.
52 Video 2 Open the calendar screen. • Dates that contain scenes (that i s, movie s were r ecorded on that date) appear in black against a silve r background. Dates without recordings appear grayed out. •T o u c h [ y ] or [ A ] to jump to the previous/next calendar month that contains recordings.
Video 53 • T o select all the scenes at once : T ouch [Select All] instead of touching individual scenes. (Rem ove in advance any checkmarks from scenes you may have selected individually .) 4 Delete the scenes. * T ouch [Stop] to interrup t the operation while it is i n progr ess.
54 Video Advanced Functions Shooting Video in y Manual Mode When the mode switch is set to y (Manual mode), you can enjoy full access to the menus and manually adjus t the exposure, focus, white balance and many mor e of the camcorder's setti ngs to your pr efer- ence.
Video 55 NOTES • The zoom, Quick Start function, po wer saving modes, etc. operate the same way in mode as in mode. For deta ils, refer to Dual Shot Mode ( 0 38). Selecting the Video Quality (Recording Mode) Th e c am co rd er off er s 5 rec o rdin g mo de s.
56 Video Special Scene Recording Programs Recording in a very bright ski resort or capturing the ful l colors of a sunset or a fi reworks display become s as easy as s electing a S pecial Scene recording program. 58 Video NOTES •[ F Portrait]/[ G Sports]/[ I Snow]/[ J Beach]: The pict ure may not appear smooth during playback. •[ F Portrait]: The blur effect of the background increases the more you zoom in ( P ). •[ I Snow]/[ J Beach]: The subject may become overexposed on cloudy days or in shaded places .
Video 59 - p will appear on the screen when the camcord er's temperature becomes too high. If this happens, tur n off the camcorder , take it out of the waterproof case and keep it in a cool place until the temperature goes down. If the camcorder becomes too hot, it will tur n off automatically .
60 Video To change the fram e rate Advanced Image Stabilization The image stabil izer reduces camcorder blur (blur due to the cam- corder moving) so yo u can get nice, stable shots. Sele ct the image sta- bilization mode according to the shooting conditions.
Video 61 NOTES • If the degree of camcorder shake is too high, the image stabilizer may not be ab le to ful ly compen sate. • Powered I S is not available in m ode. • For surveying and foll owing shots, when you p an the camcorder from side to side or tilt it up and down, we recommend setting the IS mode to [ P Dynamic] or [ Q Standard].
62 Video 1 Activate the pre-recording function. • d appears. • Repeat, selecting [ B Off], to turn off pre-r ecording. 2 Press g . The scene recorded in the memory will start 3 seconds before g was pressed. NOTES • While pre-recor ding is activated, the camcorder will not emit any notifi- cation sounds.
Video 63 By default, face detection is activa ted. If the function was turn ed off, per- form the following pro cedure to turn it on. T o select the main s ubject If there is mor e than one person in the picture, the camcor der will auto- matically select one person it determ ines is the main su bject.
64 Video T ouch & T rack Wh en rec ord i ng pe op le , f a ce de te ct io n ( 0 62) will track the main sub- ject and keep i t always in focus.
Video 65 1P r e s s z . • A blue border appears on the screen. • Press z again to return to normal video recording mode. 2P r e s s g . • By default, the camcorder recor ds for about 4 seconds (the blue frame serves as a visual progress bar) and then automatically returns to record pause mode.
66 Video To fade in/out Press g in recor d pause mode ( M ) to start recording with a fade in. Pr ess g while recor ding ( N ) to fade out and pause the reco rding. Options ( Default value) NOTES • When you apply a fader , not only the pictur e but also th e sound wi ll fade in or out.
Video 67 Options ( Default value) NOTES •[ B Shutter -Pri. AE]: - On screen only the denominator is displayed – [ B 250] indicates a shutter speed of 1/250 sec ond, etc.
68 Video Shutter Speed and Ap erture V alue Guidelines X With slower shutter speed you can add a nice motion blur and sense of movement. With faster shutter speeds you can “freeze the action” for powerful images of moving subjects. W X With small aperture values only the subject is in focus and the background is softly blurre d.
Video 69 Manual Exposure Adjustment At times, backlit subjects may appe ar too dark (underexposed) or sub- jects under very str ong lights may appear too bright or gl aring (overex- posed).
70 Video NOTES • If the recording pr ogram is change d during exposure lock, the cam- corder will return to automatic exposur e. • When shooting subj ects with a strong light source behind them, the camcorder automatically corrects for th e backlight.
Video 71 POINTS TO CHECK • Adjust the zoom before you start the procedure. 1 Open the manual focus screen. 2 T ouch a subject that appears inside the X frame. • The T ouch AF mark ( P ) will fl ash and the focus ing distan ce will be adjusted automatically .
72 Video White Balance The white balance f unction helps yo u to accurately reproduce colors under differ ent lighting conditions so that white objects will always look truly white in your recor dings. POINTS TO CHECK • Select a record ing program other th an the Special Scene r ecording pr o- grams.
Video 73 NOTES • When you select the custom white balance: -S e t 7 8 [Digit al Zoom] to [ B Off]. - Reset the white balance when you ch ange locations or the lighting or other conditio ns change. - Depending on the light source, g may keep flashing.

80 Video Using the Mini Advanced Shoe Using the mini advanced shoe, you ca n attach to the camcor der a range of optional ac cessories to expand its functionality . For details about optional acc essories available for use with your camcor der , ref er to Accessories ( 0 188).
Video 81 Using the SM-V1 Surround Mi cropho ne or DM-100 Directional Stereo Microphone Using the SM-V1 you can add a sense of depth and presence to your recor dings with 5.1ch surround sound. Using the DM-100 you can accurately record audio coming di rectly from the direction you are recor ding.
82 Video • Playing back recordings made with the optional SM-V1 Surround Micro- phone: Y ou can enjoy 5.1ch surround sound playback on HDTVs com- patible with 5.1ch surr ound sound connected to the camcorder using an HDMI cable. Audio ou tput from the A V OUT/ X terminal (inclu ding headphone output) will be converted to 2ch stereo.
Video 83 NOTES • In mode, the only availa ble func tions are turning the power on/off, starting/stopping a recor ding, and zoom. Selecting the Playback Starting Point If you have a very long sc ene, you may want to start playi ng back the scene from a certain poi nt.
84 Video To change the interva l between frames T o display change s in the scene’ s main s ubject • The timeline ruler will sh ow frames taken from the scene every time the main subject detected by the camcorder changed.
Video 85 Playing Back Scenes Set to Background Music Y ou can play back video snapshot sc enes, scenes in the playlis t and photo slideshows set to ba ckground music (instead of the original sound). Y ou can use o ne of the supplied mus ic tracks or co nnect an externa l audio player to use y our favorite so ngs as background music.
86 Video 3 Back in the index s creen, touch a scene to start the playback set to the selected music track. In mode, touch a photo to go to single photo view and continue with the slideshow procedure ( 0 108). To delete a music track In the music track sel ection scre en, touch [ Z ] or [ O ] to select the track you want to delete.
Video 87 2 Activate the exter nal audio input. 3 Connect the external player to the camcorder's MIC terminal. 4 Adjust the audio input as necessary . • Start the music playback on the exte rn al player and adjust its volume according to the onscreen indications.
88 Video NOTES • Y ou can also add to th e playlist just the vide o snaps hot scenes you want to watch and arrange their playback order . • Initializing a memory card will permanently erase any music files you may have transferred from the supp lied Camcor der Supplemental Disc to the card.

90 Video Playlist and Scene Operations Editing the Playlist: Adding, Deleting, Moving and Playing Back Create a playlist to play back only the scenes yo u prefer and in the order of y our choice. Y ou can play back the scenes in the pla ylist using your favorite so ng as background music ( 0 85).
Video 91 • a Y ou can co py scenes from the bu ilt-in memory to the memory card ( 0 121) to include in the memory ca rd’ s playlist also scenes that were originally recor ded in the built-in memory . Deleting Scene s from the Playlist Deleting scenes from the playlist will not affect your origi nal record ings.
92 Video Capturing Photos and Video Snapshot Scenes fro m a Movie Y ou can captur e video snapshot scenes, single photo s or a series of continuous photos fr om a previo usly recorded scene.
Video 93 NOTES • A video snapshot scene can be captu red only during playback; it c an- not be captured during pl ayback pause mod e. • a The captured video snapshot sc ene is saved to the same mem- ory that contains the source scene. • Video snapshot scenes cannot be ca ptured from any of the following types of scenes.
