4 14.Lightning — For added protecti on of this product during a light ning storm, or when it is left u nattended and u nused for long periods of time, disconnect it from the wall outlet and disconnect the antenna . This will prevent damage to the product due to lightning and power-line surges.
5 T he Adv anta g es of D VDs With a DVD you just pr ess the recordi ng start/ stop butto n and the camcorde r will find the empty sp ace on the disc ( 33). Don’t waste time fast for warding and rew inding a tape to find from wher e to sta rt a new re cording.
6 An Introduction to D VDs Y ou have pr obably hea rd of DVD di scs and th ey come in var ious types and in two sizes - the more commo n 12 cm DVDs and 8 cm Mini D VDs. This camc order uses 8 cm DVD-R discs (lik e the supplie d one) or D VD-RW discs (commerc ially availa ble).

Move the / switch to the (Movies) position. 3. Slide the OPEN sw itch fully in t he direction of the arrow an d gently open the disc cover completely until it stop s.
32 Y ou will be ask ed to confirm the disc specifi cation you se lected. Use t he multi select or to select ( ) [YES] and pres s ( ) to contin ue, or select [NO] and pres s ( ) to return and select a different disc specifi cation. A confirmati on message will ap pear on the scr een.

36 Selecting the Media for the S till Images Y ou can rec ord still image s on the memory car d or the disc. The default med ia for still images is the memory c ard. As lon g as you do not change th e recordin g destinati on, still images wil l be record ed to the la st selected media.
37 Basic Functions Recording E Zooming The zoom is available when recording mov ies or still images. When rec ording movies ( ), in addition to the 10x optic al zoom you can also use the 200 x digital zoo m ( 80). 10x Optical Zoom Move the zoom lever toward W to zoom out (wid e- angle).
38 Selecting the Aspect R atio of y our R ecor dings (16:9 W idescreen or 4:3) Y ou can selec t the aspect ra tio of your re cordings to match your TV .

58 About the AF- Assist Lamp: While you pre ss the PHOTO butto n halfway , if the subjec t is too dark the assist lamp may ligh t up briefly in order to ena ble the camcor der to focus more accurately (AF-as sist lamp). Y ou can also set [A F AST LAMP] to [OFF] so the assist lamp does not ligh t up.

The image stabil izer is desi gned to compensa te for a normal degree of camco rder shake. The image stabil izer may not be e ffective when reco rding in dark places using t he Night modes.

86 Deleting Scenes Y ou can delete t hose scenes that you are not intere sted in keepin g. Remember that when you delete scenes in the pl aylist, y ou do not affect your original re cordings; Ho wever , when you dele te an original recording, it will be dele ted also from the playlis t.

88 Dividing a Scene Y ou can div ide your recor dings in order to leave only t he best parts and later cut out the rest. Remember th at when you divide scenes in the playlis t, you do not aff ect your original recordings . Photomovi e scenes and sce nes create d by converti ng single sti ll images cannot be divided.
89 Editing Functions Disc Options (DVD-RW in VR mode only) E Protecting the Disc Y ou can pro tect the whol e disc in order to prevent th e accidental erasur e of important recordin gs. Available only wit h DVD-RW discs recor ded in VR mode. Initializ ing the dis c ( 9 0) will per manently era se all re cordings, e ven if the dis c is protected.
90 Initializing the Disc Y ou need to initialize a DVD-R W disc when fi rst insertin g it into the camcorder an d you may have t o initialize a disc if yo u get the “D ISC ERROR” message. Y ou can also c hoose to initializ e the disc if you wi sh to erase all the recordings on the disc or in orde r to change the disc speci fication .
91 Editing Functions Disc Options (DVD-RW in VR mode only) E Changing the Disc Title Before you fi nalize your d isc, you can gi ve it a titl e. The disc titl e will be disp layed on the index screen when playing t he finalized di sc in most DVD pla yers.
92 Stil l Image Option s Erasing Still Ima ges Y ou can erase s till images rec orded on the memory card or on the disc ( DVD-RW only), one at a time or al l at once. Be careful when eras ing images . Erased i mages can not be reco vered. Protected images on the memor y card and image s on a protec ted disc canno t be erased.

94 Copying Still Images Betw een the Disc and Memor y Card Y ou can copy still image s recorded on th e memory card to t he disc (for e xample, to add them to a Phot omovie scene ( 95)), or f rom the disc to the memory c ard (for ex ample, to set print orders for a DPOF compa tible printer ( 120)).
95 Editing Functions St ill Image Options E Con v er ting Still Ima ges into Photomo vie Scenes S till image s are recorded using JPEG co mpression, but a DVD player on ly recognizes the MPEG standard.
96 Protecting Still Ima g es on the Memor y Card Y ou can pro tect still ima ges recorded o n the memory card from accidental eras ure while displaying a single image or from the i ndex screen. Initializing the memory card ( 97) will permanently e rase all reco rded still images, e ven the protec ted ones.
