6 STEP 2 Installing th e Software System requirements To use the scanner, your comp uter must satisfy the following system requirements. Computer CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 1.6GHz or f aster Memory: 1 GB or more Hard disk: 3 GB or m ore available spac e required for installation of all software USB interface: Hi-Speed USB2.
7 Software Installation IMPORTANT • Install the software b efore connecting the scanner t o the computer. • Log on to Windows as an Ad ministrator. • Close all other applications before installing the software. 1 Insert the soft ware setup disc into t he DVD drive of the comput er.

12 STEP 3 Connect ing to a Comp uter Connect the scanner to the computer and the power supply. IMPORTANT • Do not connect the scanner to t he com puter before installing the software. • Before connecting the scanner to the computer, verify that the power of the scanner is OFF.
13 STEP 4 Turning the Power ON The power of the sc anner can be turned ON and OFF wit h the power button on the front of the scanner. 1 Make s ure th at the sca nner an d comput er are con necte d proper ly. 2 Press the powe r button. The power button lights blue when t he power turns ON.

16 Before Using the Sc anner Important Safety In structi ons To ensure the safe operation of this scanner, be sure to read the safety warnings and precautions described below. Installat ion Locat ion The performance of this s canner is affected by the enviro nment in which it is installed.
17 Moving the Scan ner ● When moving the scanner, always hold it with both hands to avoid dropping it. ● Make su re to disconnect the interface cable and AC adapter before moving the s canner. If the sc anner is transp orted with these items connected, the plug s and conn ectors may be d amaged.
18 ● When unplugging the power cord, grasp it firmly by its plug. Do not pull directly on the p ower cord, as this may damage or expose th e cord's internal wiring, resulti ng in a fi re or electric shock. ● Leave sufficient space around the power plug so that it can be unplugged easily.
19 Features of t he Scanner The main features of the DR-M160 d ocument scanner are de scribed below. ● Compact Design The scanner has a comp act size of 280 mm (11.02")(W) x 172 mm (6.77")(D) x 178 mm (7.01")( H) when the doc ument feed is c losed.
20 ● Prescan Function The scanner is eq uipped with a Presc an function that allows y ou to adjust the contrast and brightness of a prescanned image and then send the adjusted image to the appli cation software, without needing to scan the document again.

24 Basic Operation Do cum ents The scanner can scan docu ments ranging in size from business cards to LTR/A4. The docum ent sizes that t his scanner can s can are shown below. Plain Paper Size Width: 54 mm to 216 mm (2.12" to 8.5") Length: 50.

26 How to Place Docum ents Scanning mu ltiple documents Standard pa per feedin g should be used wh en scanning mul tipl e documents of a standard size at one time. Standard paper feeding enables multiple docum ents to be f ed while separating eac h page.
27 4 Adjust the document guides to fit th e width of the docume nt to be scan ned. 5 Place the doc umen t. After placing the doc ument, align the doc ument guides with both edges of the d ocument. IMPORTANT • When placing documents into the feed tray, take care not to cut your hand on the edges of the paper.

30 Placing Folded Docu ments Folio Scan ena bles you to scan documents that are larger than L TR/ A4 and therefore do not fit in the feeder. (The maximum size is 11" X 17"/A3.) To use the funct ion, fold the document in half lengthwise and place it into the f eeder.
31 8 Place the doc umen t with the folded ed ge facing right and the top ed ge facing downwa rd. After placing the doc ument, align the doc ument guides with both edges of the d ocument. IMPORTANT Adjust the document guides to fit t he width of the document.
32 3 Click [CANON DR-M160 USB] and click [Properties]. Scanner properties are displayed. 4 Click the [Ma intenance] tab, and th en select a Long Document mo de. Select [Long Doc ument Mode ( 1000 mm)] or [Long Document Mode (3000 m m)] depending on the length of the doc ument.

34 When using the double feed detec tion ignore func tion If a document double feed is det ected during scanning, document feeding stops when the double fed documents are ejected. T he following error code is displayed in the Job No. Indicator of the operating panel, and t he DFR button lights.

36 Scanning met hods Scanning with Ca ptureOnTouch What is Capt ureOnTouch? CaptureOnTouch is a scanning application t hat allows you to s can a document with a simple operation by following the instruct ions on the screen. CaptureOnTouch is provided with mu ltiple scanning methods that can be selected according to the purpose and application.
37 Exiting CaptureOnTouch Click at the top of the window to close the Captur eO nTouc h main windo w . When doing so, the main window closes but CaptureOnTouch is kept as resident in the system. To stop CaptureO nTouch being resident in the sy stem, click the (CaptureO nTou ch iconj in the taskbar, and select [Exit] from the menu.
38 3 Set the sc an metho d in the top sc reen. A Specify whether to enable continuous scanning. When scanning multiple doc uments as o ne scanned image o r splitting up a large doc ument to scan in parts, select [ON] t o enable continuous scanning. B Specify whether to scan the document in full auto mode.
39 5 Configure the settings related to output an d then output the scan ned imag es. A Configure the settings related t o output. (See p. 45) B Click this button to output the scanned images. The button name differs for each output method. For example, it is [ Save] when the output method is set t o [Save to folder].
40 2 Enter the job name , and press the Enter key. Hin t Job numbers up to 9 are added (in numerical order) t o the end of the set job name. B y specifying the job number with the operating panel, you can start scanning after pressing the operating panel button.
41 Hin t • If you set [Check output after scanning] to [ON], you can check the output settings after scanning. • If you set [Enable continuous scanning] to [O N], you can continue to scan additional document s after all the pages of th e initial document are scan ned.
42 When [Check output after scanning] is set to [ON] The Output Confirmation screen appears before the scanned images are output. Change the settings for the output method if necessary and then click the output button. The name of t he output button differs for each selected output method.
43 Scanner Setti ngs By default, CaptureOnTouch scans with scanning condit ions that match the document because scanning in full auto m ode is enabled. If you want to specify, for example, the scanning mode and document size, you can conf igure the desired scanning condit ions in the scanner setti ngs.
44 Use advanc ed settings dialog box Configure scanner settings other t han the basic ite ms in the advanced settings dialog box ( scanner driv er). To open the scanner driver, select [ON] and then click the button. For details on t he setting items, s ee the Help of the dr iver settings dialog box.
45 C Preview Controls Control the preview im ages and c ancel or continue scanning with the following buttons. Settin g the Output Me thod CaptureOnTouch is provided with various output methods for processing scanned images. The output method specification is common to Scan First and Select Scan Job.
46 Print Prints the scanned images with a specified printer. W hen you specify this output method, s pecify the printer for printing. Send to ap plic atio n Saves the scanned image file in a specified folder and then opens it with a specified applicat ion.
47 Back Up / Restore Use the [Back Up] and [Rest ore] buttons to back up the conf iguration file (settings, registered jobs, etc.) of CaptureOnTouch and restore the settings from the bac kup data.
48 [Plugin] Tab On the [Plug in] tab, confirm the plugins that have be en added to CaptureOnTouch. [Maintenance] tab With the [Maintenance] tab, you can output log files for CaptureOnTouch maintenance purposes .
49 Scanning with Ca pturePerfect Scanning w ith Captur ePerfect This sectio n describes procedur es fr om launc hing CapturePerfect to selecting a scanner, as well as proc edures for scanning with the [Scan bat ch to fi le] fu ncti on. 51 Setting the Scann er Driver When you scan a document in an ISIS compatible or TWAIN compatible application (CaptureOnTouch, etc.), open the scanner driver and conf igure the scanning conditions and other s ettings. This section describes the configuration and functions of the scanner driver.
52 [Image proce ssing] tab Set the proces sing method for s canned images. [Feeding] tab Specify scanner operations related to document feeding. [Others] tab Configure special scan method and image processing settings.
53 Color mode Select the scanning mode. • [Advanced Text Enhancement] and [Advanced Text Enhancem ent II] remov e or proce ss the back ground color an d background surrounding text to enhance the text for easy reading.
54 Scanning Documents of Unregistered Page Sizes You can regist er a non-st andard page size t hat has not been registered as a page size by nami ng and registering it as a custom page size in the Custom Paper Size dialog box, wh ich is opened from the [Save] button on the [Basic] tab.
55 When you do not want to scan co lored lines a nd text Specify the color (red, green, blue, all c olors) to be ignored (dropped out) in the color drop-out settings on the [Image p rocessing] tab, and that color will be removed from the scanned image.
56 • Advanced Text Enhancement is suitable for a document with a light background color or a document with a non-uniform back ground (such as a pattern). If the backgr ound is uniform, it is removed where it surrounds the text, and if the background is non-uniform, it is processed to enha nce text r eadability.
57 When you w ant to use b a tch separati on for scanning When you want to divide and scan a document, you can separate a batch at the timing wit h whic h each next doc ument is placed and scanned. (Only enabled for applications that support batch separation.
58 Hint The following shows the setting conditions that can be set in t he multistre am sett ings. To scan barcodes Adding a barcode module (optional ) to the scanner enables you to scan document b arcodes. Click t he [Barcode] but ton on the [Ot hers] tab to configure barc ode scanning conditions.
59 Function Restrictions Depending on Color Mode Se tting Some of the setting items in each of t he driver tabs are di sabled as f ollows depending on the setting for [Color Mode] on the [ Basic] tab.
60 More Advanced Scan ning Methods Using a Patchcode fo r Scanni ng DR-M160 supports batch separation (automatic file sep aration) functions by using patchcodes.
61 IMPORTANT • Patchcodes must be printed in their normal s ize. If patchcodes are enlarged or red uced, they may not be recognized correc tly. • When copying provided patchcodes to create different sized patchcodes, ensure that the patchcode fits inside the effective range show n in the following diagra m.
62 Maintena nce Daily Mainte nance Clean the scanner on a regular basis, as describ ed below, to maintain peak scanning quality. CAUTION • When cleaning the scanner and the inside of the scanner, turn OFF the power sw itch and disconnect the power cord from the power outlet.
63 2 Pull the OPEN lever and pull o pen the front unit toward you. 3 Use com presse d air to remove dust and pa per partic les from the inside of the scanner.
64 5 Clean th e roller s. Clean the rollers while turning them. Wipe the rollers with a cloth that has been dampened with water and thoroughly wrung out, and then use a clean, dry and soft cloth to wipe away any moisture. 6 Remo ve the ret ard ro ller and fe ed rolle r.
65 9 Close the front unit by gently push ing it up on bot h sides until it cl icks into place. Make sure that the front unit is compl etely clos ed by push ing until you hear a click.
66 4 Click the [Ma intenance] tab and th en change the value of [Reduct ion ratio ad justment]. The adjustment value can be set within t he range from -3.0% to 3.0%. 5 Click [O K] to clos e the scanne r prope rties. Replaci ng Consum able Parts The two rollers (feed roller and retard roller) installed in the scanner are consumable parts.
67 2 Pull the OPEN lever and pull o pen the front unit toward you. Hin t The location of each of t he consumable parts is shown below. 3 When closing the fron t unit, make sure that it is completely closed by gently pres sing the left and right until you hea r a click.
68 Replacing the Feed Roller 1 Open t he roller cover. 2 Remove the feed roller. 3 Install the new fee d roller. 4 Clos e the roller cover . Replacing the Retard Roller 1 Open t he rolle r cover. 2 Pull the left leve r that secures the retard roller to the scanner, and remo ve the r oller.

72 Troublesho oting Common Problems and Solutions This section prov ides recom mended solutions to c ommon pr oblems. If you have a problem that is not solved by the following, contact your local authorized Canon dealer. Probl em 1 The scanner will not tu rn on.
73 Problem 6 Pages are missing. Solutions When the scanner driver’s [Scanning Side] setting is [Skip Blank Page], documents with very little bl a ck may be unintentionally skipped. Click the [Setting] button and decrease the [Set the li kelihood of skipping blank page] value, or select another scan mode setting such as [Simplex] or [Duplex].
74 Problem 12 Memory becomes insuffi cient and scanning stops. Solutions If you configure scanni ng conditions that use a large amount of the computer's mem ory, scanning may st op because of insufficient memory.
75 Software Troublesh ooting This section des cribes troubleshooting problems and solut ions for operating the supplied s oftware (CaptureOnTouch and CapturePerfect).
76 Use ful t ips Here are some useful tips for scanning documents. Where are scanned images saved? Can the save destination be changed? Images are sav ed to the following locat ions, according to program setti ngs. For examp le, save locations such as the f ollowing can be set in CaptureOnTouch.
77 CapturePe rfect The rules for the f ile names of scanned images and the folder in which scanned images are saved can be set and then applied during scanning.
78 Clearing a Pape r Jam When paper jams are detected during scanning, the following error codes are display ed in the scanne r’s display panel and scanning is interrupted. When a paper jam or double feed occurs during scanning, use t he following procedures to clear them.
79 IMPORTANT Make sure to pull the document out carefully, without applying too much force. If the jammed paper tears while you are pu lling it out, make sure to remove any remaining pieces from inside the scanner. 4 Close the front unit by gently push ing it up on bot h sides until it cl icks into place.
80 Uninstalling the S oftware If the ISIS/TWAIN driver, CaptureO nTouch or C apturePerfect is not operating normally, f ollow the procedure below to uninstall them. Then, re-install the software from the Setup disc. (See p. 7) IMPORTANT Log on to Wind ows as an Administrator.
