5 Setup Disc Contents Install the following software nec essary for using the scann er from the supplied Setup Disc. • Capture OnTouch This is a dedicated scanning application f or this product. • CapturePerfect 3 .1 This is a scanning application for the DR series scanner .
6 STEP 2 Installing th e Software System requirements To use the scanner, your comp uter must satisfy the following system requirements. 7 Software Installation IMPORTANT • Install the software before connect ing the scanner to the computer. • Log on to W indows as an Administrator. • Close all other applications b efore installing the software. 1 Insert the softwar e setup disc in to the disk drive of the comput er.

12 STEP 3 Connect ing to a Comp uter Connect the scanner to the computer and the power supply. IMPORTANT • Do not connect the scanner to t he com puter before installing the software. • Before connecting the scanner to the computer, verify that the power of the scanner is OFF.
13 STEP 4 Turning th e Power ON The power of the sc anner can be turned O N and OFF with the power button on the front of the scanner. 1 Make s ure that the scanner an d comput er are con nected proper ly. 2 Press the powe r button. The power button lights blue when t he power turns ON.

16 Before Using the Sc anner Important Safety In structi ons To ensure the safe operation of this scanner, be sure to read the safety warnings and precautions described below. Installat ion Locat ion The performance of this scanner is affected by the environment in which it is installed.
17 Moving the Scan ner ● When moving the scanner, always hold it with both hands to avoid dropping it. ● Make su re to disconnect the interface c able and AC adapter b efore moving the s canner. If the scanner is transported with these it ems connected, the plug s and connectors m ay be damaged.
18 ● Do not place objects on top of the scanner. Such object s may tip or fall over, resulting in personal injury. ● Connect only to a power outlet of the rated voltage and power supply frequency (120 V, 60 Hz or 220-240 V, 50/60 Hz depending on your region).
19 Features of t he Scanner The main features of the DR-M140 documen t scanner are described below. ● Compact Design The scanner has a c ompact size of 313 mm (12.32") (W) x 93 mm (3.66") (H) x 181 mm (7.13") ( D) when the document feed tray is closed.
20 ● Prescan Function The scanner is eq uipped with a Presc an function that allows you to adjust the contrast and brightness of a prescanned image and then send the adjusted image to the appli cation software, without needing to scan the document again.

22 I Feed Selection Le ver Use this to change the way documents are fed. Set the lever to t he lower position when sc anning documents consecutively. (See p. 26) Set the lever to the upper pos ition when scanning documents one page at a time or scanning multi-page document s that are fastened together.
23 Displaye d Error Cod es When a scanning error occurs, the following error codes are displayed in the Job No. Indicator. Other Displ ays When the straight path tray is opened or closed, the eject method is displayed in the Job No. Indicator. : display ed when the upper unit is open.

25 • Lam inated documents may not be scanned corr ectly, depending on the document. • I t is recommended that thin documents be fed one page at a time. • Scanning the following types of d ocuments can cause a paper jam or malfunction. To scan such a document, make a photocopy of the document and t hen scan the photocopy.
26 How to Place Docum ents Switching the Fee d and Eject Metho ds Switch the feed and eject methods based on t he type of document you are scanning. Standard feeding is used to feed documents one page at a time. Non separation feeding is used to feed bound or fastened multi-page documents or folded documents without separating them.
27 Placing Docum ents 1 Switch the f eed method ba sed on the typ e of docume nt you are sc anning. When scanning plain paper or business cards, set the feed selection lever to the standard feeding position (lower posit ion). The pages of a multi-page docum ent will be separated and fed one page at a time.
28 5 Adjust the document guides to fit th e width of the docume nt to be scanned . 6 Place the doc ument. After placing the doc ument, align the document guides with both edges of the d ocument. IMPORTANT • W hen placing documents into the f eed tray, take care not to cut your hand on the edges of t he paper.
29 Placin g Cards 1 Set the feed selection lev er to the st andard fee ding position ( lower position). 2 Open t he document feed tray. 3 Open t he straight path tray. CAUTION Open the straight path tray when scanning cards. Scanning with the U-turn path may damage the card.
30 4 Place the doc ument with the fo lded edge facing right and the top ed ge facing dow nward. After placing the doc ument, align the document guides with both edges of the d ocument. IMPORTANT Adjust the document guides to fit t he width of the document.
31 2 Click the St art button, and then click [All Pro grams], [Canon DR-M 140], and [Canon imageFORM ULA Utility]. imageFORMULA Utility starts. 3 Click [CANON DR-M140 USB] and click [Properties]. Scanner properties are displayed. 4 Click the [Mainte nance] tab, and then se lect a Long Document mode .

33 When using the doubl e feed detec tion ignore function If a document double feed is detected during scanning, document feeding stops when the double fed documents are ejected. The following error code is displayed in the Job No. Indicator of the operating panel, and the DFR button lights.

35 Scanning met hods Scanning with Ca ptureOnTouch What is Capt ureOnTou ch? CaptureOnTouch is a scanning application that allows you to scan a document with a simple operation by following the instruct ions on the screen. CaptureOnTouch is provided with mu ltiple scanning methods that can be selected according to the purpose and application.
36 Exiting CaptureOnTouch Click at the top of the window to close the Captur eOnTou ch mai n windo w . When doing so, the main window closes but CaptureOnTouch is kept as resident in the system. To stop CaptureO nTouch being resident in the system, click t he (CaptureO nTou ch iconj in the taskbar, and select [Exit] from t he menu.
37 3 Set the sc an method in the top screen. A Specify whether to enable continuous scanning. When scanning multiple document s as one sc anned image or splitting up a large doc ument to scan in parts, select [ON] to enable continuous scanning. B Specify whether to scan the document in full auto mode.
38 5 Configure the settings related to output an d then output the scan ned images. A Configure the settings related t o output. (See p. 44) B Click this button to output the scanned images. The butt on name differs for each output method. For example, it is [Save ] when the output method is set to [Sav e to folder].
39 2 Enter the job name , and press the Enter k ey. Hin t Job numbers up to 9 are added (in numerical order) to the end of the set job name. B y specifying the job number with the operating panel, you can start scanning after pressing the operating panel button.
40 Hin t • If you set [Enable co ntinuous scanning] to [ON], you can continue to scan additional documents af ter all the pages of the initial document are scan ned. • If you set [Check output after scanning] to [ ON], you can check the output settings after scanning.
41 When [Check output afte r scanning] is set to [ON] The Output Confirmation screen appears before the scanned images are output. Change the settings for the output method if necessary and then click the output button. The name of t he output button differs for each selected output method.
42 Scanner Set tings By default, CaptureOnTouch scans with scanning conditions that match the document because scanning in full auto mode is enabled. If you want to specify, for example, the scanning mode and document size, you can conf igure the desired scanning conditions in the s canner setti ngs.
43 Use adv anced settin gs dialo g box Configure scanner settings other t han the basic ite ms in the advanced settings dialog box ( scanner driv er). To open the scanner driver, select [ON] and then click the button. For details on t he setting items, see the Help of the driver settings dialog box.
44 C Preview Controls Control the preview im ages and c ancel or continue scanning with the following buttons. Settin g the O utput Me thod CaptureOnTouch is provided with various output methods for processing scanned images. The output method specification is common to Scan First and Select Scan Job.
45 Print Prints the scanned images with a specified printer. W hen you specify this output method, s pecify the printer for print ing. Send to appl ica tion Saves the scanned image file in a specified folder and then ope ns it with a specified applicat ion.
46 Back Up / Restore Use the [Back Up] and [Rest ore] buttons to back up the configuration file (settings, registered jobs, etc.) of Capt ureOnTouch and restore the settings from the bac kup data.
47 [Plugin] Tab On the [Plug in] tab, confirm the plugins that have been added to CaptureOnTouch. [Maintenance] tab With the [Maintenance] tab, you can output log f iles for CaptureOnTouch maintenance purposes .

49 6 Configure t he scanning conditions. (See p. 50) 7 Place the doc ument. (See p. 26) 8 Click [Sca n Batch to File] in th e [Scan] menu . 9 Configu re the sav e destin ation, the name of the file to be saved and the file form at, and then click [ Save] to star t scanning.
50 Setting th e Scanner Driver When you scan a document in an ISIS compatible or TWAIN compatible application (CaptureOnTouch, etc.), open the scanner driver and conf igure the scanning conditions and other settings. This section describes the configuration and functions of the scanner driver.
51 [Image proce ssing] tab Set the proces sing method for scanned images. [Feeding] tab Specify scanner operations related to docum ent feeding. [Others] tab Configure special scan method and image processing settings.
52 Color mode Select the scanning mode. • [Advanced Text Enhancement] and [Advanced Text Enhancement II] remov e or process the background color and background surrounding text to enhance the text for easy reading.
53 Scanning Documents of Unregistered Page Sizes You can regist er a non-standard p age size that has not been registered as a page size by nami ng and registering it as a custom page size in the Custom Paper Size dialog box, wh ich is opened from the [Save] button on t he [Basic] tab.
54 When you do not want to scan co lored line s and text Specify the color (red, green, blue, all colors) to be ignored (dropped out) in the color drop-out settings on the [Image p rocessing] tab, and that color will be removed from the scanned image.
55 When you w ant to enhan ce text that is di fficult to re ad because o f factors s uch as the background of the scanned do cument Select [Advanced T ext Enhancement] or [ Advanced Text Enhancement II] in the mode setting on the [Basic] tab.
56 When you wa nt to rotate the im ages of a doc ument placed horizontally to correct the orientation Specify the rotation angle in [ Document Orientation] on the [Others] tab.
57 A When you want to specify different scanning conditions for the front and back pages of a document, select [Skip Blank Page] or [Both] for [Scanning Side] on the [Basic] tab i n advance. B Specify the num ber of scanning conditions to apply in [Stream count of Front].

59 Function Restrictions Depending on Mode Se tting Some of the setting items in each of t he driver tabs are di sabled as f ollows depending on the setting for [Color Mode] on the [ Basic] tab.
60 More Advanced Scan ning Metho ds Using a Patchc ode fo r Scanni ng DR-M140 supports batch separation (automatic file sepa ration) functions by using patchcodes.
61 IMPORTANT • Patchcod es must be printed in their nor mal size. If patchcodes are enlarged or red uced, they may not b e recognized correctly. • W hen copying provided patchcodes to create different sized patchcodes, ensure that the patchcode fits inside the effective range show n in the following diagram.
62 Maintena nce Daily Mainte nance Clean the scanner on a regular basis, as de scribed below, to maint ain peak scanning quality. CAUTION • When cleaning the scanner and the inside of the scanner, turn OFF the power sw itch and disconnect the p ower cord from t he power outlet.
63 3 Use com presse d air to rem ove dust and pa per partic les from the inside of the scanne r. 4 Wipe an y dirt off the sca nning glass. Wipe any d irt off the scanning glass with a cloth that has been dampened with water and thoroughly wrung out, and t hen wipe the glass dry w ith a clean, dry an d soft cloth.
64 7 Wipe the rem oved rollers with a cloth that has bee n dampen ed with water and thorough ly wrung out. 8 Reattach the ret ard roller and feed ing roller. (See p. 67, p. 67) 9 Close the upp er unit by gently pushing down on the left and ri ght side s.
65 3 Click [C anon DR-M 140 USB] and cli ck [Propertie s]. Scanner properties are displayed. 4 Click the [Maintenance] tab and th en change the value o f [Reduct ion ratio adjust ment]. The adjustment value can be set within t he range from -3.0% t o 3.
66 2 Raise the OPEN lever, and open the upper unit. Hin t The location of each of t he consumable parts is shown below. 3 Close the upper unit by gen tly pushing down on the left and right sides. Push until it clicks i nto place to make sure that i t is complete ly closed.
67 Replacing the Retard Roller 1 Unlock t he roller cover and op en it. 2 Remove the re tard rol ler. 3 Install th e new retard rolle r. 4 Press t he rol ler co ver to close i t. Replacing the Feed Roll er 1 Lower the se curing leve r for the feed roller for ward.
68 3 Remove the feed roller, det aching the left side firs t. 4 Install the new fe ed roller, a ttaching the right side first. 5 Slide the se curing l ever for the f eed roller to the right. 6 Lower the se curing leve r for the feed roller un til it clicks into pla ce.

71 Troublesho oting Common Problems and Solutions This section prov ides recommended solutions to common pr oblems. If you have a problem that is not solved by the following, contact your local authorized Canon dealer. Probl em 1 The scanner will not tu rn on.
72 Problem 8 Scan ned images are saved in TIFF instead of JPEG format. Solutions When documents are scanned with CapturePerfect while [Color Mode] is set to [Detect automatically] in the scanner driver, documents detec ted as black a nd white are automatically s aved in TIFF form at, even if the file type is specified as JPEG format.
73 Software Troublesh ooting This section des cribes troubleshooting problem s and solutions for operating the supplied s oftware (CaptureOnTouch and CapturePerfect).
74 Use ful ti ps Here are some useful tips for scanning documents. Where are scanned images saved? Can the save destination be changed? Images are sav ed to the following locations, ac cording to program setti ngs. For examp le, save locations suc h as the following can be set in CaptureOnTouch.
75 CapturePe rfect The rules for the f ile names of scanned images and the folder in which scanned images are saved can be set and then applied during scanning.
76 Clearing Paper Jams a nd Skewed Docume nts When paper jams and skewed documents are detected during scanning, the following error codes are displayed in the scanner’s display panel and sc anning is interrupted. When a paper jam or double feed occurs during scanning, use t he following procedures to clear them.
77 IMPORTANT Make sure to pull the document out carefully, without applying too much force. If the jammed paper tears while you are pulling it out, make sure to remove any remaining pieces from inside the scanner. 4 Close the upp er unit by gently pushing down on the left and ri ght side s.
78 Uninstalling the Software If the ISIS/TWAIN driver, CaptureO nTouch or C apturePerfect is not operating normally, f ollow the procedure below to unins tall them. Then, re-install the software from the Setup disc. (See p. 7) IMPORTANT Log on to Wind ows as an A dministrator.
