9 Chapter 1 Installa tion Diagrams 1 Po wer Button On: Pr ess the power button to turn on the T eraStation. Off : Press the po wer button twice within 3 seconds to turn off the T eraStation. 2 Reset Button This resets the T eraStation. Use a toothpick or similar object to hold down this switch for a sec ond, then release it.
10 USB hubs are not supported. 9 Po wer C onnectors Use the included power cables t o connect these to a UPS, surge protector , or outlet. 10 Pow er Status Glowing green: po wer is on Blinking green: power is off Glowing red: error Blinking red: power supply fan error 11 UPS Port Connect to a UPS.
11 3 F ollow the steps on the screen t o connect the T eraStation ’ s Ethernet and power cables and turn it on. Note: Use LAN port 1 for initial setup . After setup, y ou may connect a second cable to LAN port 2. If you use LAN port 2, configure the IP address at Network - IP Address in Settings.
12 If you are prompt ed to enter the administrator passw ord f or the T eraStation, it is “passwor d” by default. 8 Right-click on your T eraStation ’ s icon and choose S ettings . 9 Changing the passwor d from the default in File Sharing - Users - admin - Edit is recommended.
13 Notes: • F or best results, use an NTP server to maintain the time settings on the T eraS tation and other network devices. Clocks for the network devices may run a t slightly differen t speeds. If these devices get out of sync it may cause network problems.

20 Chapter 3 A cc ess Restric tions Y ou may restrict access to specific shar ed folders, including external USB drives . Notes: • Access r estrictions can be set separately for each shared f older , but not for folders within the shared f olders. • Configure ac cess restrictions through Settings.
21 Notes: • Names may contain up to 27 alphanumeric characters , hyphens (-), and underscor es (_). Do not use a symbol as the first character in a name. • The description may contain up t o 75 alphanumeric characters, hyphens (-), underscor es (_), and spaces.

30 13 Click OK . Notes: • If you change the T eraStation’ s name, you will no longer be able to use domain users and g roups or access r estric- tions. T o repair this , rejoin the domain. • If both read-only and read & write permissions are given to a user , the user will have r ead-only access.
31 5 Click Y es . 6 Enter a workgr oup name. Select “ Assign authorization to external SMB server ” and enter the authentication server ’ s IP address (rec ommended) or name. Check “ Automatic user registra tion ” and “Use shared folder f or authorization testing ” , and enter the name of the folder to use.

Notes: • If access restrictions are set for users or gr oups from the authentication server , guest and anonymous connec- tions will not be possible with AFP or FTP connections.
33 Chapter 4 Managing St or age RAID Arra y s T eraStations support many types of RAID. The type of R AID arra ys available f or use depends on how many drives ar e installed in your T eraSta tion. Notes: • If you change the RAID mode, all data on the array is delet ed.
34 RAID 51 RAID 51 arrays are a vailable for T eraSta tions with 6 or more hard drives . In this mode, two RAID 5 arrays are c ombined into a RAID 1 array . The t otal usable space for 6 drives in a RAID 51 arra y is 2 x the capacity of the smallest drive.
35 3 Click Delete RAID Array . Once JBOD mode is configured , create shar ed folders on each drive to use them. Changing RAID Mode T o change the RAID mode, first put the drives in JBOD . 1 Select RAID. 2 Click the array to delete . Note: If the “R AID Mode ” field is blank , the arra y is already in JBOD .
36 Note: After changing the RAID mode, cr eate a shared f older . C onfiguring a Hot Spare If you have a hot spar e configured and an array fails , the T eraStation immediately switches over t o the hot spare.
37 RMM (RAID Mo de Manager) With RMM, y ou can create or expand a RAID array without er asing the data on the drives. Changing from JBOD to RAID 1 Y ou must have at least two driv es available in JBOD (not in a RAID array) to build the RAID 1 array with RMM.
38 Changing the RAID mode while adding a drive: • Selec t the drive you w ant to add to the RAID array and choose the mode f or the array . Enter the “C onfirm Operation ” number and click OK . • The “Confirm Opera tion ” screen will open.
39 5 Move the RAID scanning switch to the position to enable RAID scanning. Note: Normally “I15” information message or code will be notified in NAS Navigat or2, Settings, or error LED , howev er , it may not be displa yed if your T eraStation’ s firmware v ersion is 2.
40 Dismounting Drives If the T eraStation is power ed on, dismount drives (internal and external) befor e unplugging them. Y ou may dismount any drive fr om Settings. If the T eraStation is off , then all drives are alr eady dismounted and may be unplugged saf ely .
41 3 Select the drive to test, then click Check Disk . 4 Click Check . Y ou have the option of deleting information files fr om Mac OS during the check if desired.
42 3 The S.M.A.R.T . information for the drive will be displa yed. Diff erent inf ormation may be displayed depending on the brand of drives in your T eraStation. Critical attributes are display ed in bold. Attributes with curren t value less than or equal to the threshold value ma y be significant.
43 4 Select a format type, then click F ormat . 5 The “Confirm Operation ” screen will open. Enter the displayed number , then click OK . 6 Depending on the size of your drive , the format may take sev eral minutes or several hours t o complete. “I20 DISKx F ormatting” will be displayed in NAS Navigator2 until the f ormat is complete.
44 Encr ypting Driv es Internal drives (and arrays) can be encrypted with 128-bit AES during formatting. Encrypted drives and arrays ar e then readable only from that specific T eraStation. T o unencr ypt a driv e or array , uncheck “Encr yption ” and format it again.
45 • All logs deleted If you remov e a drive and then erase all data on the T eraStation, NAS Navigator2 will show the err or “HDx Error E22 HDx Can ’t Mount” where X is the hard drive you r emoved. Y ou can still use the T eraStation. F ollow the procedur e below to completely and permanently er ase all data from your T eraStation.
46 • If both user and group quotas are configur ed for a user , the most restrictive quota will always apply . Quotas for U sers F ollow this procedur e to limit the total drive space a vailable for a user . 1 In Settings, click to the right of “Users” .
47 Size Limits If L VM is enabled , volumes can be created with maximum siz e limits. Up to 32 L VM and iSCSI volumes are supported. 1 In Settings, click Drives . 2 Select L VM . 3 Select the drive where the volume will be located and click Enable L VM on Volume .
48 8 Configure the desir ed settings, then click OK . 9 Click Close . 10 Click Close . 11 Navigate to F ile Sharing - F older Setup . 12 Click Create F older .

50 Using the T eraStation as an iSCSI De vice Introduction iSCSI is a protocol f or carr ying SCSI c ommands over IP networks. Unlike traditional SAN pr otocols such as fibre channel , which requires special-purpose cabling , iSCSI can be run over long distances using existing netw ork infrastructure.
51 W indows 8.1, Window s 8, W indows 7, Window s V ista, W indow s Ser v er 2008, W indows Server 2012 If you are using W indows 8.1, W indows 8, W indows 7, W indows V ista, Windo ws Ser ver 2008, or Windows Server 2012, the Microsoft iSCSI Sof tware Initiator is alr eady installed on your computer .
52 10 Enter a volume name, v olume description, volume, and siz e, then click OK . 11 Click Close . 12 Connect the new volume. The process for this will depend on your iSCSI software .
53 Mutual Authen tication with the T eraStation The T eraStation can per form mutual authentica tion (two-way authentication). Dual passwords ensur e that only authorized client computers can acc ess the volumes on the T eraStation.
54 OS. Expanding the V olume Size Y ou can expand the size of a volume . If the iSCSI volume is on an L VM- enabled drive or array , you can also create or delete the volume . 1 In Settings, click Drives . 2 Choose iSCSI . 3 Click the volume you wan t to expand.
55 Navigate to Driv es - iSCSI . Select the iSCSI volume to disconnect and click Disable Connection . T o reconnect the volume, click Enable Connection . Similarly , you may c onnect or disconnec t a v olume from the editing page by enabling or disabling V olume Connection .
56 3 Click the Security tab. 4 Click Edit . 5 Enable “ A ccess Restrictions” , enter the username and password, and click OK . Note: T o use mutual authentication with access r estrictions, config.
57 5 Click Close . Mutual Authen tication Ac cess Restrictions by Username and P assw ord T o set access restrictions using mutual authentication in addition to regular ac cess restrictions, configure the settings as shown below .
58 • Do not change the order of the hard drives in the T eraStation. For e xample, pulling out drive 1 and replacing it with drive 2 may cause data to be c orrupted or lost. • If a new drive is not recogniz ed, click Rediscov er Disk in Settings. • If two drives fail at the same time, replac e and resync them one at a time.
59 2 Select the hard drive with the flashing status LED and click Dismount Disk . 3 The status LED will stop flashing and glow st eadily . 4 Unlock the failed drive by pushing the unlock button and swing ing the lock mechanism out. 5 Pull out the hard driv e car tridge and r emove it from the T eraStation.
60 Chapter 5 Backup Back Up from the T eraSta tion Y ou can back up T eraStation folders to: • A different folder on the T eraStation • Another LinkStation on the network • Another T eraStation on the network Y ou can also configure backup jobs from Easy Setup .
61 4 Click Add , enter the IP addr ess of the target LinkStation or T eraSta tion, and click Close . If your setup meets the requirements belo w , you don ’ t have to configur e these settings: • The source and target T eraSta tions are on the same network.
62 2 Click to the right of “Backup” . 3 Click Create New Job . Note: Up to 8 backup jobs can be configured . 4 Select backup settings such as date and time to run. The follo wing types of backup jobs may be selected: T ype F iles included Normal backup All files in the source will be backed up to the destina tion.
63 T ype F iles included Management backup Each time a backup is executed , management information is stor ed, and only files that have changed ar e copied or deleted.
64 Note: If the backup task is not added to the list, try refreshing the browser . 11 Click Close . Replication Replication copies all data from a shar e to a share on a diff erent T eraStation. This is an easy wa y to configure a reliable system to pr ovide data protection in the event y our main T eraStation fails.
65 7 Click Browse under “Replication T arget” . 8 Select the shared folder that will be the replication tar get, then click OK . 9 Click OK . 10 Click Y es . Notes: • During setup, y ou may choose to encrypt and/or compress replication data. Encrypted data will transferr ed securely on the network.

F iles are not added to the selected f older and the amount of used space does not increase. 7 Enter the bucket name, ac cess key ID , and secret acc ess key of the Amazon S3 bucket, then click OK .
73 Chapter 6 Remot e A c cess W ebAc cess W ebAccess is a pr ogram f or accessing the files in the shared f older of your T eraStation from your comput er , smartphone, or tablet through the Internet.
74 • T o use SSL encr yption f or more secure data tr ansfers, enable “HT TPS/SSL Encryption” . • Y ou may use the default BuffaloNAS.com reg istration, or disable to use a diff erent DNS server . • Choose a “BuffaloNAS.com name” for your WebAc cess account.

80 Chapter 8 Multimedia DLNA DLNA is a set of guidelines for sharing digital media. The T eraStation includes a DLNA server compliant with the DLNA guidelines. The movies, photos, and music sa ved on this product can be played back on DLNA-compliant T Vs, st ereo equipment, game consoles, and other devic es within the network.
81 4 Enable “DLNA ” under “LAN Protoc ol Suppor t” , then click OK . 5 Click Ser vices . 6 Move the DLNA switch to the position to enable DLNA. 7 Click the icon to the right of “DLNA Ser ver” . 8 Click Edit . 9 Select an inter val f or DLNA ser v er database updates and click OK .

87 Initial Setup Installing Client T ools Download the client tools below fr om ww w .buffalotech.com and install them on your computer . Camera P olicies - Registers that a netw ork camera is connected and ready to rec ord. Live Viewer - L ets you view video as it is being r ecorded.
88 • Use the dedicated utility provided with the network camer a or other program to c onfirm that the network cam- era operates pr operly . Enable the Sur v eillanc e Camer a Enable surveillance camera in Settings. Note: F irst, complete the initial settings f or the T eraStation and the network camera.
89 8 T o enable sur v eillance cameras, change the switch t o . Notes: • If the target shared folder specified as the st orage location for r ecorded video is deleted , the sur veillanc e camera is automatically disabled. • Do not directly edit recorded video data in the shar ed storage folder .
90 T o deactivate the license, click . 5 Check that the “Sur veillanceC amera 1 camera ” and “HardDisk” were added to “Installed Licenses” . The free license is no w enabled. Registering the Rec ording P olic y of the Networ k Camer a Register the network camera that is used.

94 An additional network camera can be regist ered by selecting “ Y es” when asked “Do you want to add an additional camera?” 12 Click Save . Recording will begin.
95 Email Error Notifica tion Y ou may configure the T eraStation to send you an email notification when the av ailable space for rec ording is low , or when recor ding fails due to a camera malfunction, network disconnection, or other cause.

97 4 Select the sec tion to export and click Expor t . This will register the video to the export queue. 5 Open the Export screen, register the export information from “Expor t Job Configur ation ” , and click Star t Expor t . The video is exported in MOV format.

104 Data Ser vic e P olicies Data Ser vice P olicies is a software prog ram for crea ting data ser vic e policies. The policy types that can be created ar e shown below . Note: T o use migration and duplication, an additional backup license must be pur chased.
105 Starts “Mini V ault Status ” for enabling the display of basic monitoring information. Sets the security status. Shuts down or restarts a por tion ( V ault) of the surveillance cameras. Changes the properties. Performs a diagnosis of the surveillance camera.
106 All clients and T eraStations located on the network are indicated b y and labels. These can be moved by dragging and dropping them. Clients are displa yed only when a job is being ex ecuted and activities are indicated by a line linking the client and T eraStation.
