1 About this Manual.
1.1 About this chapter This chapt er briefly descr ibes the conte nt of thi s manual. It will int roduce you to the standar d terms and typogra phic convent ions which a re used throu ghout the manual. It also describes the h ardware and software requirements o f the AirSta tion Pro.

Getting Started 10 WLA-AWCG User Manua l 2.2.3 Install ing the Wireless LAN card To ena ble an Ai rStat ion Pro to co mmunicate w ith a co mputer, a networ k adapte r must be installed in the P C or the laptop. Th e AirStati on Wireless LAN c ard (WLI- PCM-L11) consists of both LAN and radio functi ons.
11 Gett i ng Started WLA-AWCG User Manua l Installing an AirS tation Wireless LAN card o n a laptop PC If you are usi ng Windows 95/9 8 or 2000, yo u can install the networ k card whilst the laptop is swit ched on. To install the net work card, follo w these steps: 1 Insert the Wireless LAN network card into the PC card slot.

To attach th e ante nna adapter yo u must first disassem ble the AirSt ation Pro . To disassembl e the AirStation Pr o a nd attach the adapter, follow th ese steps.

GLOSSAR Y Access P o int An access point serves as a bridge between an ex isting wired network and wireless devices. The Air Station Pro i s a type of acc ess point. CD-ROM (Comp act Disc Read-Only Memory) An optic al disc that is physicall y the same as an a udio CD, but cont ains computer data.
ESS-ID (Extende d Serv ice S et ID) An ID used to r egulate comm unicatio n between wireless LAN PC’s a nd an AirSt ation Pro.Thi s ID allows yo u to access th e network and co nnect to an access point. The ESS-ID f orms part of the AirStation Pro a ddress and part of t he PC/laptop address, acting as a special identifier.
The p rotocol within TCP/IP tha t govern s the break-up of dat a messages into packets from sen der to destination network and sender to distribution network and station, and the r e-assembly of the packets i nto orig inal data messages at the d est inati on.
