Protocols allow users to gain access to network connected resources. The print server used on this Brother product supp orts the TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) protocol.
Introduction 6 1 Telnet 1 The Brother print server supports Telnet server for command line configuration. SNMP 1 The Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is us ed to manage network devices including computers, printers and terminals in a TCP/IP network.
7 2 2 Overview 2 Before using your Brother printe r in a network environm ent, you must configure the TCP/IP se ttings. In this chapter, you will learn the basic steps required to prin t over the network using the TCP/IP pro tocol. We recommend that you use the automatic installer a pplication on the CD-ROM we have provided with the machine.
Configuring your network printer 8 2 IP addresses, subnet masks and gateways 2 To use the machine in a networked TCP/IP environment , you need to configu re the IP address and subnet mask. The IP address you assign to the print server must be on the same logical n etwork as your host computers.

Troubleshooting 23 6 General problems 6 CD-ROM is inserted, but does not start automatica lly 6 If your computer does not support Autorun, the menu will not start automatically after inserting the CD-ROM. In this case, execute Setup.exe in th e root directory of the CD-ROM.
Troubleshooting 24 6 Network print software installation problems 6 The Brother print server is not found during the setu p of the network print software or from the installation of the Brother printer driver.
Troubleshooting 25 6 Printing problems 6 Print job is not printed 6 Make sure the status and configu ration of the print server. Check the following: a Make sure that the printer is p owered on, is on-line and ready to print.
Troubleshooting 26 6 Protocol-specific troubleshooting 6 Web Based Management (web brows er) troubleshooting (TCP/IP) 6 a If you can not connect to the p rint server using your web browser it may be worth checking th e Proxy Settings of your browser. Look in the Exceptions se tting an d if necessary, type in the IP address of the print server.
27 A A Using services A A service is a resource t hat can be acce ssed by computers that wish to print to the Brother print server. The Brother print server provides the following predef ined services.
Appendix A 28 A Note In order to enable BOOTP, simply use an editor to delete the“#” (if there is no “ #”, then BOOTP is already enabled). Then edit the BOOTP configuration file (usual ly /etc/bootptab) and enter the name, network type (1 for Ethernet), Ethernet address and the IP a ddress, subnet mask and gateway of the print se rver.
Appendix A 29 A Using APIPA to config ure the IP address A The Brother print server supports the Automatic Priva te IP Addressing (APIPA) protocol. With APIPA, clients automatically configure an IP address and subnet mask when a DHCP server is not available.
