Introduction 3 1 Types of network connection 1 Network connection example 1 Generally there are two types of network connec tions: Peer-to-Peer and Network Shared environment. Peer-to-Peer printing using TCP/IP 1 In a Peer-to-Peer environment, each compute r directly sends and receives data to each device.
Introduction 4 1 Network Shared printing 1 In a Network Shared environment, e ach computer sends data via a ce ntrally controlled computer . This type of computer is often called a “Server” or a “Print Server”. Its job is to control the printing of all print jobs.
Introduction 5 1 Protocols 1 TCP/IP protocols and funct ionalities 1 Protocols are the standardize d sets of rules f or transmi tting data on a network. Protocols allow users to gain access to network connected resources. The print server used on this Brother product supp orts the TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) protocol.
Introduction 6 1 Telnet 1 The Brother print server supports Telnet server for command line configuration. SNMP 1 The Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is us ed to manage network devices including computers, printers and terminals in a TCP/IP network.
7 2 2 Overview 2 Before using your Brother printe r in a network environm ent, you must configure the TCP/IP se ttings. Appendix A 28 A Note In order to enable BOOTP, simply use an editor to delete the“#” (if there is no “ #”, then BOOTP is already enabled). Then edit the BOOTP configuration file (usual ly /etc/bootptab) and enter the name, network type (1 for Ethernet), Ethernet address and the IP a ddress, subnet mask and gateway of the print se rver.
Appendix A 29 A Using APIPA to config ure the IP address A The Brother print server supports the Automatic Priva te IP Addressing (APIPA) protocol. With APIPA, clients automatically configure an IP address and subnet mask when a DHCP server is not available.
Appendix A 30 A (web browser), Telnet (using the SET IP ADDRESS command) or factory re set the print server (which will then allow you to use the ARP command aga in). Using the Telnet console to configure the IP address A You can also use the Telnet command to change the IP address.
Appendix A 31 A Using the Brother Web BRAdmin server so ftware for IIS* to configure the IP address A The Web BRAdmin server software is designed to ma nage all LAN/WAN Brother network connected devices.
