General information 7 1 3 Touchpanel: Back Press to go back to the previous menu level. Home Press to return to the Home sc reen. The factory setting displays the date and time, but you ca n change the Home screen’s default setting (see Setting the Ready screen on page 12 .
Chapter 1 8 Touchscreen LCD 1 You can select three types o f screens for the Home scree n. When the Ho me screen is displayed , you can change the displayed screen by swiping left or righ t, or pressing d or c . The following screens display the machine s status when the machine is idle.
General information 9 1 NOTE Swiping is a ty pe of user operation on the Touchscreen that is per formed by brushing your finger across the screen to display the next page or item. 1 Modes: Fax Lets you access Fax mode. Copy Lets you access Copy mode.

22 2 Loading paper and print media 2 The machine can feed paper fro m the standard paper tray, multi-purpo se tray or optional lower tray. NOTE If your application so ftware supports paper size selection on the print menu, you can select it through the software.
Loading paper 23 2 b While pressing the b lue paper-gu ide release levers (1), slid e the paper guides to fit the pape r you are loading in the tray. M ake sure th e guides a re firmly in the slots. c Fan the stack of paper well to avoid paper jams and misfeeds.
Chapter 2 24 f Lift up the support flap (1) to prevent paper from sliding off the face-down output tray, or remove each page as soon as it comes out of the machine.
Loading paper 25 2 c Load paper in the MP tray and make sure: The paper stays under th e maximum paper tab (1) . The top edge of the paper is positioned between the and arrows (2). The side to be printe d on must be face up with the leading edge (top of the paper) in first.
Chapter 2 26 Printing on thick paper, labels and envelopes from the MP tray 2 When the back cover (face -up output tray) is pulled down, the machine has a straight paper path from the MP tray th rough to the back of the machine. Use this paper feed and output meth od when you want to print on thick paper, labels or e nvelopes.
Loading paper 27 2 d Pull out the MP tray support (1) and unfold the flap (2) . e Load paper, labe ls or envelopes in the MP tray. Make sure: The number of envelopes in the MP tray does not exceed three. The paper, labels or envelopes stay under the maximum pap er tab (1).
Chapter 2 28 f Send the print job to the machine. NOTE • Remove each enve lope as soon a s it has been printed. Stacking the envelopes may cause them to jam or curl. • If envelopes or thick pa per get smudged during printing set the M edia Type to Env.
Loading paper 29 2 Unscannable and unprintable areas 2 The figur es in the tab le show m aximum uns can nable and unprintable areas. These ar eas may vary depending on the paper size or se ttings in the application you are using.
Chapter 2 30 Paper settings 2 Paper Size 2 When you change the size of pape r in the tray, you must also change the setting for paper size at the same time so your machin e can fit the document or an incom ing fax on the page. You can use the following sizes of paper.
Loading paper 31 2 Tray Use in Copy mode 2 You can change the priority tr ay that the machine will use for printing copies. When you choose Tray#1 Only , MP Only or Tray#2 Only 1 , the machine pulls the paper only from that tray. If the selected tray is out of paper, No Paper will appear on the Touchscreen.

Loading paper 33 2 Acceptable paper and other print media 2 Print quality may vary a ccording to the type of paper you are using . You can use the following types of print media: plain paper, thin paper, thick paper , thicker paper, bond paper , recycled paper, labels, envelopes or glossy paper (see Print media on page 226).
Chapter 2 34 Paper Tray Capacity 2 1 Folio size is 215.9 mm 330.2 mm. 2 Load only one sheet of Glossy in the MP tray. Recommended paper specifications 2 The following paper specifications are appropr iate for this machine. Use plain paper that is appr opriate for laser/LED machines to make copie s.
Loading paper 35 2 Handling and using special paper 2 The machine is designed to wo rk well with most types of xerographic and bond paper. However, some paper variables may have an effect on print quality or handling reliability. Always test samples of paper before purchasing to ensure desirable performance.
Chapter 2 36 Envelopes 2 The machine is designed to wo rk well with most envelopes. Howeve r, some envelopes may have feed and print quality problems because of the way they have bee n made. Envelopes should have edges with str aight, well-creased folds.
Loading paper 37 2 Labels 2 The machine will print on most types of labels designed for us e with a laser mach ine. Labels should have an adhesive that is acrylic-b ased since this m aterial is mor e stable at the high temperat ures in th e fuser unit.
38 3 How to load documents 3 You can send a fax, make copies, and scan from the ADF (Automatic Document Fe eder) and the scanner gla ss. Using the automatic document feeder (ADF) 3 The ADF can hold up to 35 pages (MFC-L86 50CDW) or 50 page s (MFC-L8850CDW/MFC-L9550CDW) an d feeds each sheet ind ividually.
Loading documents 39 3 d Adjust the paper guides (1) to fit the width of your document. NOTE To scan non-standard docu ments, see Using th e scanner glass on page 39. Using the scanner glass 3 You can use the sca nner gl ass to fax, copy or scan pages of a book, one page at a time.
40 4 How to send a fax 4 The following steps explain how to sen d a fax. To send mu ltiple pages use the AD F. a Do one of the following to load your document: Place the docu ment face up in the ADF (see Usin g the automatic document feeder (ADF) on page 38).
Sending a fax 41 4 e Enter the fax number. Using the dial pad Using the Address Book Address Book Using call history Call History (For more information , see How to dial on page 59.) f Press Fax Start . Faxing from the ADF The machine starts sca nning the document.
Chapter 4 42 Transmission Verification Report 4 You can us e the Tran smission Verif ication Report as proo f that you sent a fax. This report lists the receiving par ty’s name or fax number, the time and date of transmissio n, duration of transmission, number of pages sent, and whether or not the tr ansmission was successful.
43 5 5 Receive modes 5 You must choose a receive mode de pending on th e exter nal devices and telephone services you have on your line. Choosing the receive mode 5 By default, your machine will automatically receiv e any faxes that are s e nt to it. The diagrams below will help you choose the co rrect mode.
Chapter 5 44 h Press Receive Mode . NOTE If you cannot change the Receive Mode , make sure the BT Call Si gn feature is set to Off (see Advanced User's Guide).
Receiving a fax 45 5 Using receive modes 5 Some receive modes answer auto matically ( Fax and Fax/Tel ). You may want to change the Ring Dela y before using these modes (see Ring Delay on page 46 ). Fax Only 5 Fax mode will automatically answer ever y call as a fax.
Chapter 5 46 Receive Mode settings 5 Ring Delay 5 The Ring Delay setting sets th e number of times the machine rings before it answers in Fax and Fax/Tel modes.
Receiving a fax 47 5 Fax Detect 5 If Fax Detect is On : 5 The machine can receive a fax automatically, even if you answer the call. When you see Receiving on the To uchscree n or hea r a click on the phone line through the handset you are using, just replace the handset.
Chapter 5 48 Fax Preview (Black and White only) 5 How to preview a received fax 5 You can view received faxes on the Touchscre en by pr essing ( Fax ) and then ( Received Faxes ). When the machine is in Ready mode, a pop-up message will appear on the Touchscreen to alert you of new fa xes.

How to print a fax 5 a Press ( Fax ). b Press Received Faxes . c Press the fax you want. d Press Start to confirm the fax to print. e Do one of the following: Press Print All Pages to print all pages.

51 6 6 How to use PC-FAX 6 PC-FAX Receive (Windows ® only) 6 If you turn on the PC -FAX Re ceive featur e your MFC will store received faxes in memory and send them to your computer automatically. Yo u can then use your computer to view and stor e these faxes.
Chapter 6 52 m Press . NOTE • Before you can set up PC- FAX Receive you must install the MFL-Pr o Suite software on your computer. Make sure your computer is connected and turned on (see Software and Network User's Gu ide).
53 7 7 Telephone line services 7 Setting the telephone line type 7 If you are connecting the machine to a line that features a PBX or ISDN to send and receive faxes, it is necessary to change the Telephone Line Type according ly by completing th e following steps.
Chapter 7 54 Connecting an external TAD 7 You can connect an external Telephone Answering Device (TAD) to the same line as your machine. When the TAD answers a call, your machine will “liste n” for the C NG (fax calling) tones sent by a sending fax machine.
Telephone and external de vices 55 7 Recording an outgoing message (OGM) 7 a Record 5 seconds of silence at the beginning of your messa ge. This allows your machine time to listen for fax tones. b Limit your speaking to 20 seconds. c End your 20-second message by giving your Remote Activ ation code for people sending manual faxe s.
Chapter 7 56 Operation from external or extension telephones 7 If you answer a fax call on an extension telephone, or an extern al telephone that is correctly connected to the machine through the T-piece con nection, you can make your machine take the call by using the Remote Activation code.

59 8 8 How to dial 8 You can dial in any of the following ways. Manual dialling 8 a Load your documen t. b Do one of the following: When Fax Preview is set to Off , press ( Fax ). When Fax Preview is set to On , press ( Fax ) and Sending Faxes .
Chapter 8 60 Storing numbers 8 You can set up your machine to do the following types of easy di alling: Address Book and Groups for broadca sting faxes. When you dial an Address Book number, the Touchscreen displa ys the number. NOTE If you lose electrical power, the Address Book numbers that are in the memory will not be lost.
Dialling and storing numbers 61 8 Changing Address Book names or numbers 8 You can ch ange or dele te an Addre ss Book name or numb er that has alre ady been stored. If the stor ed number has a sche duled job , such as a delayed fax or a fax forwarding number, it will be dimmed on the Touchscreen.
62 9 How to copy 9 The following steps explain the basic copy operation. a Do one of the following to load your document: Place the docu ment face up in the ADF (see Usin g the automatic document feeder (ADF) on page 38). Load your document face down on the scanner glass (see Using the scanner glass on page 3 9).
Making copies 63 9 h Swipe up or down, or press a or b to display the available options , and then press your new option. Repeat steps g and h for each setting you want. NOTE If you want to save the settings as a Shortcut, press Save as Sh ortcut . i Press OK .
64 10 With the Direct Print feature, you do not need a comput er for prin ting. You ca n print by just plugging your USB flash dri ve into the machine’s USB direct interface. You ca n also connect and print directly from a camera set to USB mass storage mode.
Printing from a USB flash drive or di gital camera supporting mass storage 65 10 Printing directly from the USB flash drive or digital camera supporting mass storage 10 NOTE • Make sure your digital camera is turn ed on. • Your digital camera must be switched from PictBridge mode to mass storage mode.

68 11 Printing a document 11 The machine can rece ive a document from your computer and print it. To print from a computer, you must install the printer driver.
69 12 12 Before scanning 12 To use the machine as a scanner, install a scanner driver. If the machin e is on a network, configure it with a TC P/IP address. Install the scanner d rivers from the CD- ROM or Brother Solu tions Center at http://solutions.
Chapter 12 70 Scanning a document as a PDF file using ControlCenter4 (Windows ® ) 12 (For Macintosh, see Softwar e and Network User's Guide.) NOTE The screens on you r computer may vary depending on yo ur model. ControlCenter4 is a software utility that lets you qui ckly and easily access th e applications you use most often.
How to scan to a computer 71 12 e Click File . f Press Scan . The machine starts the scanning proc ess. The folder where the scanned data is saved will open automatically.

74 A Replacing supplie s A You must replace supplies when the machine indica tes that the life of the supply is over. You can replace the following supplies yourse lf: Using non-Brother supplies may affect th e prin t quality, hardware performan ce, and machine reliability.
Routine maintenance 75 A The messages in the table appear on the Touchscreen. These messag es provide advanced warnings to replace th e supply item s before th ey reach end of life. To avoid any inconvenience, you may want to buy spare supply item s befo re the machine stops printing.
76 You must clean the machine regularly an d replac e the supply items when the me ssages in the table are d isplayed on the Touchscreen. 1 A4 or Letter size single-sided pages. 2 Approximate cartridge yield is decla red in accordance with ISO/IEC 19798.

Routine maintenance 79 A Replacing the toner cartridges A a Make sure the machine is turned on . b Press the fro nt cover relea se button and pull open the fron t cover.
80 d Hold the handle of the tone r cartridge and gently push it towar d the machine to unlock it. Then pull it out of the drum unit. Repeat this for all the toner cartridges. WARNING • DO NOT put a toner cartridge into a fire. It could explode, resulting in injuries.
Routine maintenance 81 A IMPORTANT • Handle the toner ca rtridge carefully. If toner scatters on your hand s or clothes, immediately wipe or wash it off with cold water. • To avoi d print qua lity problems , DO NOT touch the shaded parts shown in the illustrations.
82 g Unpack the new toner cartri dge, then pull off the protective cover. IMPORTANT • Unpack the toner cartridg e just before you put it in the machine.
Routine maintenance 83 A h Hold the handle of the toner ca rtridge and slide the toner cartridg e into the drum unit then gently pull it toward you until you hear it clic k into place. Make sure that you match the tone r cartridge colour to the same colour label on th e drum unit.
84 Replacing the dr um unit A Model Name: DR-321CL A new drum unit can print approximately 25,000 A4 or Letter size single-sided pa ges. 1 1 Drum life is approximate and may vary by type of use. IMPORTANT For best performance, use a Brother Original drum unit and Brothe r Original toner units.
Routine maintenance 85 A b Press the fro nt cover relea se button and pull open the fron t cover. c Hold the blue handle of the drum unit. Pull the drum unit out until it stops.
86 d Turn the blue lock lever (1) a t the left of the machine counterclockwise to the release position. Holdin g the blue handles of the drum unit, lift the front of the drum unit a nd remove i t from the machine.
Routine maintenance 87 A e Hold the handle of the toner ca rtridge and gently push it forward to unlock it.Then pull it out of the drum unit. Repeat this for all the toner ca rtridges. WARNING • DO NOT pu t a toner ca rtridge into a fire. It could explode, resulting in injuries.
88 NOTE • Be sure to seal up the used drum unit tightly in a bag so that ton er powder doe s not spill out of the drum unit. • Go to http://www.b rother.com/original/ index.html for instructions on how to return your used supply items to th e Brother recycling program.
Routine maintenance 89 A h Make sure the blue lock lever (1) is in the release position as shown in the illustration. i Gently slide the drum unit into the machine until it stops at the blue lock lever. j Turn the blue lock lever (1) clockwise to the lock position.
90 m When you replace the drum unit with a new one, you must reset the dr um counter. In structions of how to do this can be found in the box your new drum unit came in. Replacing the belt unit A Model name: BU-320CL A new belt unit can print approximatel y 50,000 (5 pages per job ) or 20,000 (1 page per job) A4 or Letter size single-sided pages.

92 d Turn the blue lock lever (1) a t the left of the machine counterclockwise to the release position. Holdin g the blue handles of the drum unit, lift the front of the drum unit a nd remove i t from the machine.
Routine maintenance 93 A e Hold the blue handle of the belt unit with both hands an d lift the belt unit up, then pull it out. IMPORTANT To avoid print quality problems, DO NOT touch the shaded parts shown in the illustrations. f Unpack the new be lt unit and install the new belt unit in the m achine.
94 g Make sure the blue lock lever (1) is in the release position as shown in the illustration. h Gently slide the drum unit into the machine until it stops at the blue lock lever. i Turn the blue lo ck lever (1) clockwise to the lock position. j Push the drum unit in until it stops.
Routine maintenance 95 A l When you replace the belt unit with a new one, you need to reset the belt unit counter. In structions of how to do this can be found in th e box your n ew belt unit came in. Replacing the waste toner box A Model name: WT-320CL The life of a waste toner box is approximately 50,000 A4 or Letter size single-sid ed pages.
96 b Press the fro nt cover relea se button and pull open the fron t cover. c Hold the blue handle of the drum un it. Pull the drum unit out until it stops.
Routine maintenance 97 A d Turn the blue lock lever (1) a t the left of the machine counterclockwise to the release position. Holding the blu e handles of the drum unit, lift the front of the drum unit and remove it from the machine.
