Printing Methods 3 1 Acceptable paper and other print media 1 Print quality may vary according to the type of paper you are using. You can use the following types of print media: thin paper, plain paper, thick paper, bond paper, re cycled paper, labels or envelopes.
Printing Methods 4 1 1 Legal or Folio size paper is not availabl e in some regions outside th e USA and Canada. Bond paper Rough paper– 60 to 163 g/m 2 (16 to 43 lb) p Bond Paper Thin paper 60 to 75.
Printing Methods 5 1 Recommended paper specifications 1 The following paper specifications are suitable for this machine. Use paper that is made for plain-p aper copying. Use paper that is 75 to 90 g/m 2 (20 to 24 lb). Use long grain paper with a neutr al Ph value, and a moisture content o f approx.
Printing Methods 6 1 Handling and using special paper 1 The machine is designed to work well with most types of xerographic and bond paper. However, some paper variables may have an effect on print quality or hand ling reliability. Always test samples o f paper before purchasing to ensure desirable performance.
Printing Methods 7 1 Envelopes 1 Most envelopes designed for laser printers will be suitable for your machine. However, some envelopes ma y have feed and print-quality problems because of the wa y the y have been made.
Printing Methods 8 1 • with each side folded as shown in figure below If you use any of the types of envelopes list ed above, they may damage you r machine. This damage may not be covered under any Brother warranty or service a greement. Labels 1 The machine will print on most types of la bels designe d for use with a laser printer.

Printing Methods 19 1 Note • Remove each sheet of labels or envelope as soon as it has been printed. Stacking them may cause the paper to jam or curl. • If an envelope is creased after they are printed, see Impro ving the print quality on page 111.

23 2 2 Printer driver 2 A printer driver is software that translates data from the fo rmat used by a computer to the f ormat that a particular machine needs.

Driver and Softwa re 26 2 Note This area (4) shows the current settings. Paper Size 2 From the drop-down box choose the Paper Size you are u sing. Orientation 2 Orientation selects the position of how you r document will be printed ( Portrait or Landscape ).
Driver and Softwa re 27 2 Media Type 2 You can use the following types of media in your machin e. For the best print quality, select the type of media that you wish to use. Note • When using ordinary plain paper (75 to 105 g/m 2 (20 to 28 lb)) choose Plain Paper .
Driver and Softwa re 28 2 Print cut-out line When 1 in NxN pages option is se lected, the Print cut-out line option can be selected. This option allo ws you to print a faint cut-out line around the printable are a. Duplex / Booklet 2 When you want to print a booklet or do duplex printing, use this function.
Driver and Softwa re 29 2 Booklet / Booklet (Manual) Use this option to print a document in booklet forma t using duplex printing; it will arrange the document according to the correct page number and allows you to fold at the center of the print output without having to change the order of the page number.

You can choose one of the preset waterma rks, or you can use a bitmap file or text that you have creat ed. When you use a bitmap file as a watermark, you ca n change the size of the watermark and put it anywhere you like on the page.
Driver and Softwa re 32 2 Header-Footer Print Lock Lock the current settings of the Header-Footer Print option to prevent chan ges being made. Other Print Options.

Driver and Softwa re 44 2 Toner Save Mode You can conserve toner using this feature. When you set Toner Save Mode to On , print appears lig hter. The default setting is Off . Note • We do not recommend Toner Save Mode for prin ting Photo or Gray Scale images.

If you would like to turn the status monitor on, follo w these steps: For Mac OS X 10.4.11 a Run the Printer Setup Utility (from the Go menu, c hoose Applications , Utilities ), then choose the machine.
Driver and Softwa re 51 2 Uninstalling the printer driver 2 You can uninstall the printer driver that y ou have installed with the following steps. Note • This is not available if you installe d the printer driver from the Windows ® Add a printer function.
Driver and Softwa re 52 2 Software 2 Software for networks (H L-2250DN / HL -2270DW only) 2 For the information about netwo rk utility software, see Chapter 1 of the Network User's Guide . Remote Printer Console (For Windows ® only) 2 Remote Printer Console is soft ware to change many of the printer settings independently of your application.
53 3 3 LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) 3 This section refers to four LEDs T oner , Drum , Error , Ready and Go button on the control panel. The LED indications shown in the table below ar e used in the illustrations in this chapter. Control Panel 3 1 Toner LED The Toner LED indicates that the Toner is low.
Control Panel 54 3 LEDs Machine Status SLEEP The machine is in Sleep mode (Power Save mod e). The machine acts as though it were turned off. Receiving data or pressing Go wakes up the machine fro m Sleep mode to Re ady mode. DEEP SLEEP The machine is in Deep Sleep mode (r educing more power consump tion than Sleep mode).
Control Panel 55 3 TONER LOW The toner cartridge will need to be replaced soon. Buy a new toner cartridge and have it ready for when REPLACE TONER is indicated. The Toner LED wil l turn on for 2 seconds an d off for 3 seconds. REPLACE TONER (Stop mode) Replace the toner cartridge with a new on e.
Control Panel 56 3 DRUM END SOON The drum unit will need to be replaced soon. We reco mmend that yo u get a new drum unit to replace the curren t one. Se e Replacing the drum u nit on page 78. The Drum LED will turn on for 2 seconds and off for 3 sec onds.
Control Panel 57 3 FRONT COVER OPEN Close the front cover of the machine . FUSER COVER OPEN Close the fuser cover located behind the back co ver of the machine. JAM TRAY 1 / JAM INSI DE / JAM REAR / JAM DUPLEX Clear the paper jam. See Paper jams and how to clear them on page 104.
Control Panel 58 3 Service call indications 3 If there is an error that cannot be cleared by the user, th e machine will show that a service call is needed by lighting up all the LE Ds as shown below. If you see the service call indication shown above, turn off the power switch, and then turn it back on and try to print again.

Control Panel 60 3 Go button 3 The Go button has the following functions: Cancel printing Cancel the current job being print ed: While printing press Go for about 4 seconds until all th e LEDs light up and then release it. The Ready and Error LEDs will flash as the jo b is being canceled.
Control Panel 61 3 Print a test page 3 You can use Go or the printer driver to print a test page. Using the Go button 3 a Turn off the machine. b Make sure that the front cover is closed and the p ower cord is plugged in. c Hold down Go as you turn on the power switch.

Routine Maintenance 67 4 Before replacing the consumable items 4 Please read the following instructions be fore replacing the consumable items. WARNING DO NOT put a toner cartridge into a fire.
Routine Maintenance 68 4 IMPORTANT • Brother strongly recommends that you do not refill the toner cartridge provided with your machine. We also strongly recommend that you cont inue to use only genuine Brother brand rep lacement toner cartridges.
Routine Maintenance 69 4 • DO NOT unpack a spare toner cartridge until immediately befo re you put it into the machine. If tone r cartridges are left unpacked for a long time the toner life may be shortened. • DO NOT unpack a spare drum unit until immediately be fore you put it into the machine.
Routine Maintenance 70 4 Toner cartridge 4 The original toner cartridge that ca me with the machine may be either a starter, standard or a high yield toner cartridge 1 , and depends on the model a nd country you bought the machine in.
Routine Maintenance 71 4 REPLACE TONER 4 The machine will stop printing until you rep lace the to ner cartridge. A new and unused genuine Bro ther toner cartridge will reset the REPLACE TONER mode. Replacing the toner cartridge 4 Before you replace the toner cartridges, see Before replacing t he consumable items on page 67.
Routine Maintenance 72 4 d Push down the green lock lever a nd take the toner cartridge out of the drum unit. e Unpack the new toner cartridge. Ho ld the cartridge level wit h both hands and gently shake it from side to side several times to spread the toner evenly in side the cartridge.
Routine Maintenance 73 4 f Pull off the protective cover. g Put the new toner cartridge firmly into the drum unit unt il you hear it lock into place. If you pu t it in properly, the green lock le ver will lift automatically.
Routine Maintenance 74 4 h Clean the primary corona wire inside the dru m unit by gently sliding the green tab from right to left a nd left to right several times. Note Be sure to return the tab to the home position ( a ) (1). If you do not, printed pages may h ave a vertical stripe.
Routine Maintenance 75 4 The printing operation varies depend ing on the machine setting: Default setting (Stop mode) The machine will stop printing until you repla ce the toner cartridge with a new one when the LEDs indicate REPLACE TONER .
Routine Maintenance 76 4 Drum unit 4 A new drum unit can print approximately 12,000 A4 or Letter size single-sided pages at 1 page / job. Note • There are many factors that determine t he actual drum life, such as the temperature, h umidity, type of paper, type of toner used, number of pages per print j ob and so on.
Routine Maintenance 77 4 REPLACE DRUM 4 If the Drum LED is on, it means the drum u nit should be replaced. Please replace it with a new Brothe r drum unit. DRUM STOP 4 If the Drum and Error LEDs are on, it means the drum unit must be replaced. Replace it with a new Brother drum unit.
Routine Maintenance 78 4 Replacing the drum unit 4 Before you replace the drum unit, see Before replacing the consumable items on page 67. When you replace the drum unit with a n ew one, you need to reset the drum counter by comp leting the following steps: a Make sure that the machine is turned on and the Drum LED is flashing.

Routine Maintenance 81 4 h Press and hold down Go for about 4 seconds until all the LEDs light up. Once all four LEDs are lit, release Go . IMPORTANT Do not reset the drum counter when you only replace the toner cartridge. i Close the front cover. j Make sure that the Drum LED is no w off.
Routine Maintenance 82 4 Cleaning 4 Clean the outside and inside of the machine regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth. When you replace the toner cartridge or the drum unit, make sure that you clean the inside of the machine. If printed pag es are stained with toner, clean the inside of the machine with a dry, lint-free cloth.
Routine Maintenance 83 4 Cleaning the outside of the machine 4 a Turn off the machine's power switch. Disconnect all cables, and then un plug the power cord from the AC power outlet. b Pull the paper tray completely out of the machine . c Wipe the outside of the machine with a dry, lint-free clot h to remove dust.
Routine Maintenance 84 4 Cleaning the corona wire 4 If you have print quality problems, cl ean the corona wire as follows: a Open the front cover and leave the machine for at least 10 minutes to cool down. b Take out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly.
Routine Maintenance 85 4 c Clean the primary corona wire inside the dru m unit by gently sliding the green tab from right to left a nd left to right several times. Note Be sure to return the tab to the home position ( a ) (1). If you do not, printed pages may h ave a vertical stripe.
Routine Maintenance 86 4 Cleaning the drum unit 4 If your printout has white or black spots at 94 mm (3. 71 in.) intervals, follow the st eps below to solve the problem. a Prepare blank A4 or Letter size paper. b Make sure the machine is in the Ready mod e.
Routine Maintenance 87 4 Note Make sure that the two green envelope levers on the left and right hand sides are in the up po sition. d Press Go five times. e Close the front cover. The machine will prepare the Drum Cleaning process. When the machine is read y for the Drum Cleaning process, the Ready LED turns on.
Routine Maintenance 88 4 g Using both hands, slide the manual fee d paper guides to the width of the paper that you ar e going to use. h Using both hands, put one piece of A4 or Le tter size paper in the manual feed slot unt il the top edge of the paper touches the paper feed roller.
Routine Maintenance 89 4 i When the machine has finished cleaning it returns to the Ready mode. j Repeat steps c to i two more time s using a new blank shee t of paper each time. Upon co mpletion please discard the used paper. If the problem is not solved yet, follow the steps belo w: a Turn off the machine's power switch.
Routine Maintenance 90 4 IMPORTANT • We recommend that you put the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly on a piece of disposa ble paper or cloth in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner. • To prevent damage to the machin e from static elec tricity, DO NOT touch the e lectrodes shown in the illustration.
Routine Maintenance 91 4 e Put the print sample in front of th e drum unit, and find the exact position o f the poor print. f Turn the drum unit gear by hand while looking at the surface of the OPC drum (1).
Routine Maintenance 92 4 IMPORTANT DO NOT clean the surface of the photosensitive drum with a sharp obje ct. h Put the toner cartridge back into the drum unit until you hear it lock into place. If yo u put the cartridge in properly, the green lock le ver will lift automatically.
Routine Maintenance 93 4 l Plug the machine's power cord back into the AC pow er outlet first, and then reconnect all cables. Turn on the machine's power switch. Cleaning the pape r pick-up roller 4 If the paper pick-up roller is dirty, the machine may not feed paper.
Routine Maintenance 94 4 e Wipe the two paper pick-up rollers (1) inside the machine. f Put the paper back in the paper tray. g Put the paper tray back in the ma chine. h Plug the machine's power cord back into the AC pow er outlet first, and then reconnect all cables.
Routine Maintenance 95 4 Packing and shipping the machine 4 Note If for any reason you must ship your ma chine, carefully repack the machine in the original packag ing to avoid any damage during transit. The machin e should be adequately insu red with the carrier.
Routine Maintenance 96 4 d Put the protective material in the machine with the "R EMOVE" text to the left, as shown in the illustration. e Put the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back into the machine. f Put the elastic band over the handle of the drum unit, as shown in the illu stration.
Routine Maintenance 97 4 i Put the styrofoam piece marked "RIGHT" on the right side of the machine. Put the styrofoam piece marked "LEFT" on the left side of the machine.
