INTRODUCTION 1 - 8 About pa per The print quali ty can be affected by th e type of paper you use in the machine. To get the best print qual ity for the setti ngs you’ve chosen, always set the Paper Type to match the type of paper you load . You can use plain paper, inkjet paper (coated p aper), glossy paper, transparenci es and envelopes.

MAKING COPIES 2 - 8 Making N in 1 copies or a poster (Page Layout) You can reduce the number of pages fo r copies by using t he N in 1 copy featur e. This all ows you to copy two or four page s onto one page, all owing you t o save paper. It is also possib le to cr eate a poster.

MAKING COPIES 2 - 12 Setting Pa per Si ze You can use five siz es of paper for pri nting your cop ies: Letter, Lega l, A4, A5 and Photo Card (10x15cm). When you change the type of paper you l oad in t he machine, you wi ll need to change the s etting for Paper Size at the same time so your machine can fit the co py on the page.

6 - 1 TROUBLESHOOTI NG AND ROUTINE MAINTENANCE 6 Troubleshootin g Error messages As with any sophisti cated offic e product, er rors may occ ur. If this happens, your machin e identifies t he problem and displays an er ror message. The most common error messages are shown below.

6 - 3 TROUBLESHOOTI NG AND ROUTINE MAINTENANCE Document jams (DCP-120C and DCP-340CW only) If the document is jammed, follow the st eps below. Document is jammed in the top of the ADF unit 1 Take out any paper fro m the ADF that is not j ammed. 2 Open the ADF cov er.
TROUBLESHOOTING AND ROUTINE MAINTENANCE 6 - 4 Printer jam or paper jam Remove the jammed paper depending on where it is jammed in the machine. Open a nd close the s canner cover to clear t he error. Paper is jammed inside the paper tra y 1 Pull the paper tray out of the machine.
6 - 5 TROUBLESHOOTI NG AND ROUTINE MAINTENANCE Paper is ja mmed inside the machine 1 Remove the Jam Clear Cover . Pull the ja mmed paper out of the machine. 2 Re-insert t he Jam Clear Cover. 3 If you can not pul l out the jammed paper, li ft the scanner cover from the right-hand si de of the machine until it locks secu rely into the open posit ion.

TROUBLESHOOTING AND ROUTINE MAINTENANCE 6 - 12 Checking the pri nt quality If faded or strea ked colours and text appears on yo ur output, some of the noz zles may be clogged. You can check thi s by prin ting the Print Quality Check Sheet and looking at the nozzle check pattern.
6 - 13 TROUBLESHOOTING AND ROUTINE MAINTENANCE 8 Press ( No ) for b lack or three colours with a problem. The LCD shows: Press ( Yes ). The machin e will start cleaning the pr int head. 9 After cle aning is finished, pr ess Colour Start . The machine wil l start printi ng the Print Quality Check Sheet again and then retu rn to Ste p 5.
TROUBLESHOOTING AND ROUTINE MAINTENANCE 6 - 14 Checking the pri nting alignm ent You should r arely need to adjust t he printing alignment; howev er, if after t ransporting t he machine your printed t ext becomes bl urred or images become faded then adj ustment may ne ed to be made.
6 - 15 TROUBLESHOOTING AND ROUTINE MAINTENANCE Checking the ink volume You can check the ink that is left in the cartr idge. 1 Press ( Ink Management ). 2 Press or to select Ink Volume . Press Set . 3 Press or to select the colour you want t o check. The LCD shows the ink volume.

6 - 17 TROUBLESHOOTING AND ROUTINE MAINTENANCE 3 Lift t he scanner co ver to rel ease the l ock. Gently pus h the scanner cover support down and close the scanner cov er. 4 Unplug the machine from the electrical so cket. 5 Unplug the int erface cable from t he machine, if it i s connected.

6 - 19 TROUBLESHOOTING AND ROUTINE MAINTENANCE Routine maintenance Cleaning the scanner Lift the document cov er. Clean the scanner glass wit h isopropyl alcohol on a soft lint -free cloth. Clean the glass strip under the film with isopropy l alcohol on a lint-f ree clot h.

6 - 21 TROUBLESHOOTING AND ROUTINE MAINTENANCE Cleaning the Paper Pick-up Roller 1 Unplug the machine and re move the Jam Cl ear Cover. 2 Clean the Paper Pick-up Roller with isopropyl alc ohol on a cotton swab. 3 Re-insert t he Jam Clear Cover. 4 Re-connect t he power cor d.
TROUBLESHOOTING AND ROUTINE MAINTENANCE 6 - 22 Replacing the ink cartridges Your machine is equipped with an ink dot counter. The ink dot counter automati cally monitors the level of ink in each of the four cartridges. When t he machine detects an ink cartridge is r unning out of ink, the machine wil l notify you with a message on t he LCD.
6 - 23 TROUBLESHOOTING AND ROUTINE MAINTENANCE 4 Remove the prot ective yell ow caps. 5 Each colour has its own corr ect position. Keep the ink cart ridge in an upright posi tion when you insert it into sl ot. Press down firmly on the ink cartridge until the hook snaps over it.
TROUBLESHOOTING AND ROUTINE MAINTENANCE 6 - 24 7 If you r eplaced an ink cartri dge while Near Empty was displayed on the LCD, the LCD may ask you to verify that it was a brand new one.
6 - 25 TROUBLESHOOTING AND ROUTINE MAINTENANCE Caution ■ Do not remove ink cartridges if you do not need to replace them. If you do so, it may reduce the ink quantity and the machin e will not know t he quantit y of ink l eft in the cartri dge. ■ Do not to uch the car tridge inser tion slots.
