CONVENTIONS USED IN THIS MANUAL. In or der to keep confusion to a minimum, ther e ar e a few basic conventions used in the feature explanations in this manual, as follows: ■ Names of key featur es ar e written in the cap-low style; e.g., Patter n Mode, Song Recor d Mode, System Mode Sync function, User patter ns, etc.
HOW TO USE THIS MANUAL. The R Y9 Owner’ s Manual is designed to travel alongside the R Y9 itself. It includes infor mation about all the R Y9’ s featur es and operation pr ocedur es, or ganized in such a way as to per mit quick and easy access to any featur e you need to locate.

1. THE RY9 The R Y9 is an easy-to-use yet power ful r hythm pr ogrammer with automatic bass and chor d accompaniment backing, an exter nal input for playing along using a guitar , versatile MIDI capabilities and much mor e.
The RY9’ s many other featur es include song chaining and loop r epeating, r hythm “swing” function for a r ealistic human feeling, guitar tuner and guitar synthesizer , 28-note polyphony , ster eo outputs, headphone jack, and a lar ge LCD scr een which always lets you know what mode and status you’r e cur r ently in.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN 2. RY9 SYSTEM STRUCTURE The R Y9 is primarily a power ful r hythm pr ogrammer, but with the added dimension of automatic backing accompaniment, song pr ogramming capability and a guitar synthesizer . The key components that make up the R Y9’ s operating system ar e the A WM voices, the dr um kits, the patter ns, and the songs.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN 5 THE A WM VOICES. Ther e ar e 128 “dr um” voices and 50 “nor mal” A WM voices. The dr um voices ar e assigned to the dr um kits. The nor mal voices ar e assigned to the backing accompaniments and to the guitar synthesizer . THE DRUM KITS.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN 6 THE MODES AND FUNCTIONS. The RY9’ s featur es ar e for the most par t or ganized into nine modes accessible by holding [MODE] and pr essing one of the dr um pads (the names of the modes ar e printed on the various pads).

TOP P ANEL 1 LCD SCREEN High contrast, easy-to-r ead Liquid Cr ystal Display (LCD) pr ovides lar ge-content visual feedback to always let you know exactly what mode and status you’r e cur r ently in. 2 [REC] BUTTON For entering and exiting Patter n Recor d Mode and Song Recor d Mode.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN 5 [STOP] BUTTON For stopping the song or patter n playback or r ealtime r ecor ding. 6 [PLA Y] BUTTON For star ting song or patter n playback or r ealtime r ecor ding fr om the cur r ent measur e location. Pr essing [PLA Y] immediately after pr essing [STOP] will continue the song or patter n playback fr om the stop location.
) [DELETE] BUTTON For deleting individual dr um beats in Patter n Recor d Mode. Simply hold [DELETE] and pr ess [ENTER] or the appr opriate dr um pad to delete the dr um voice at the cur r ent cursor location. When Chor d Assign is active, holding [DELETE] and pr essing [ENTER] will delete the chor d at the cur r ent cursor location.

SIDE & REAR P ANELS 1 [VOLUME] SLIDER For setting the master volume output level fr om the [OUTPUT] and [PHONES] jacks. 2 [PHONES] MINI JACK For plugging in a pair of headphones with a mini ster eo plug for private listening. 3 [OUTPUT] JACKS For connecting the R Y9 to a mixer , or a ster eo amplifier , or amplified speakers.
5 [EXT IN] JACK For plugging in a guitar to play along with the song or patter n playback, or for using the guitar tuner featur e, or for “triggering” any of the 50 A WM backing instr ument voices in various ways.
GETTING ST ARTED 12 5. SETUP & POWER-ON The RY9 can be powered by either an optional AC adaptor or six batteries. Follow the instr uctions below based on the power sour ce you intend to use.
USING BA TTERIES Install six 1.5 volt AA-size (SUM-3 or R6P) or equivalent manganese or alkaline batteries into the batter y compar tment. 1. Open the batter y compar tment cover .
WHEN TO REPLACE THE BA TTERIES. When the batteries r un down and ar e no longer able to operate the R Y9, the sound may become distor ted, the output volume level will decr ease automatically , and the wor ds “BA TT LOW” will appear in the LCD. When this happens, r eplace the batteries with a complete set of six new batteries.
Monitoring by an Audio System Another simple setup for monitoring the R Y9’ s sound is to plug a pair of audio cables fr om the R Y9’ s [OUTPUT] jacks to the inputs of either a mixer , or a ster eo amplifier , or a pair of amplified keyboar d speakers.
MIDI settings Connecting a Guitar One of the R Y9’ s most unique featur es is its [EXT IN] jack, which lets you plug a guitar dir ectly into the R Y9 and play along with the patter ns and songs, or .
POWER-ON PROCEDURE. Ther e is actually a cor r ect pr ocess for switching the various components in an electr onic music system on and of f. The r ules ar e simple but impor tant.
6. PLA YING THE DEMO SONG Befor e you begin using the RY9 or diving into its many featur es, you might want to hear the prepr ogrammed demo song which will give you an idea of just how power ful the R Y9 is. T o select the demo song, first you must enter Song Mode.
7. PLA YING THE DRUM P ADS At power -on, you can star t hitting the dr um pads right away . Tr y listening to the sounds of the cur r ently selected dr um kit. The Dr um V oice List and Dr um Kit List ar e pr ovided on pages 84 and 86. SELECTING THE P AD BANKS.
SELECTING THE DRUM KITS. When the Chase function is on, the cur r ently selected dr um kit will depend on which patter n is selected. Ther e ar e 16 dr um kits—12 Pr eset dr um kits and 4 User dr um kits. T o select a dif fer ent kit, you must first enter Dr um Kit Mode.
8. PLA YING THE PRESET P A TTERNS The R Y9 comes filled with 200 Pr eset one-measur e r hythm patter ns (#000 ~ #199). Each Pr eset patter n is accompanied by a special backing par t, pr epr ogrammed in a specific music style. The automatic backing consists of Bass, Chor d 1 and Chor d 2 tracks.
■ The wor d “PTN” (located next to the number of the cur r ently selected patter n) will be flashing, indicating that you can change the patter n number . ■ Pr ess [-1] and [+1] to select a Preset patter n (between #000 ~ #199). (The patter n numbers between #200 ~ #249 ar e for User patter ns, i.
CHANGING THE TEMPO. Y ou can change the tempo whether the patter n is playing or stopped. Each Pr eset patter n is pr ogrammed with an “initial tempo”. When you select a patter n, the patter n’ s initial tempo will be loaded. ■ T o change the cur r ent tempo setting, hold [MODE] and pr ess [TEMPO] to enter T empo Mode.
■ T o select Chor d Root or Chor d T ype, pr ess [ E ] and [ F ]. The flashing indicator will be positioned above the cur rently selected one. ■ T o change the backing Chor d Root or Chor d T ype, pr ess [+1] and [-1], followed by [ENTER] to lock in the new chor d.
■ When the backing name is flashing, pr ess and hold [-1] or [+1] to scr oll thr ough all the backings; the ver y last backing selection will be the “Backing Of f” status. ■ T o tur n the backing accompaniment of f, choose the ver y last backing selection, indicated by the wor ds “BKOFF” in the LCD.
Bass T rack Mute (“B”) is the first function, Chor d 1 T rack Mute (“C1”) is the second function, and Chord 2 T rack Mute (“C2”) is the thir d function in Mute Mode. The wor ds “MUTE B (or C1 or C2) OF” will appear on the LCD to indicate that you have accessed the desir ed T rack Mute function, and that it is tur ned of f.
■ Pr ess [-1] and [+1] to select a Pr eset song (between #00 ~ #49). (The song numbers between #50 and #99 ar e for User songs, i.e., songs you cr eate yourself; the User songs for a new R Y9 will contain no data.) ■ T o play the selected Pr eset song, pr ess [PLA Y].
CHANGING THE P A TTERNS AND BACKING ACCOMP ANIMENT . Y ou can easily change the patter ns and backing accompaniment of the selected song—either while the song is stopped or while it is playing.
■ T o change the backing accompaniment, pr ess [ E ] or [ F ] to position the flashing cursor over the name of the backing accompaniment. The backing name will begin flashing, indicating that you can select a dif fer ent accompaniment backing to play with the cur r ently selected r hythm.
30 MODES & FUNCTIONS 10. P A TTERN MODE Patter n Mode is one of the two main operating modes of the RY9 (the other being Song Mode). It consists of both Patter n Play and Patter n Recor d Modes. The Pr eset Patter n List is pr ovided on page 88. P A TTERN PLA Y MODE.
MODES & FUNCTIONS THE BEA T/CLOCK POSITION INDICA TORS The patter n beat/clock position indicators appear in the upper right ar ea of the LCD, wher e lar ge inver ted triangles r epr esent each beat in the measur e, and small inver ted triangles r epr esent each clock wher e r hythm data may exist.
MODES & FUNCTIONS 32 ■ SELECTING A “NEXT” P A TTERN - T o specify the “Next” patter n to play immediately after the cur r ent patter n finishes, pr ess [+1] and [-1] while the cur r ent patter n is playing to specify the Next patter n number .
MODES & FUNCTIONS 33 ■ ASSIGNING A SWING F ACTOR TO THE P A TTERN - Hold [MODE] and pr ess [P AGE-] or [P AGE+] once or mor e to access the Swing function. The word “SWING” will appear in the LCD, as will the cur r ent Swing setting (OFF , E1 ~ E9, S1 ~ S5).
MODES & FUNCTIONS 34 ■ COPYING THE CURRENTL Y SELECTED P A TTERN - When the patter n is stopped, first select a sour ce patter n to copy fr om. Then, hold [MODE] and pr ess [P AGE+] once or mor e to access the Patter n Copy function. The wor ds “COPY SURE?” will appear in the LCD.
MODES & FUNCTIONS 35 P A TTERN RECORD MODE. In Patter n Recor d Mode, you can select and r ecor d a User patter n in either step-time or r eal-time, as well as designate the meter (time signatur e) for the patter n befor e r ecor ding, and r ecor d accents to achieve r ealistic playing dynamics.
36 MODES & FUNCTIONS ■ DESIGNA TING THE METER - If you want to cr eate a patter n fr om scratch with a specific time signatur e, you must first designate the meter for an empty User patter n while still in Patter n Recor d Standby Mode—i.e., before initiating the Step or Realtime r ecor ding operation.
MODES & FUNCTIONS 37 EXAMPLE DRUM SCORE: 8 BEA T P A TTERN When an 8 beat patter n is r ecor ded, the LCD will display as follows. ■ ENTERING STEP RECORD MODE - Fr om within Patter n Recor d Standby Mode, simply pr essing one of the dr um pads or the [ACCENT] button will initiate the step r ecor ding operation.
38 MODES & FUNCTIONS ■ ENTERING REAL TIME RECORD MODE - Fr om within Patter n Recor d Standby Mode, simply pr essing [PLA Y] will initiate the r ealtime r ecor ding operation.
MODES & FUNCTIONS 39 ADDING ACCENTS TO THE RHYTHM Y ou can r ecor d and delete accents the same way as r ecor ding and deleting dr um beats—by using the [ACCENT] button. (Y ou can assign accent levels to the pads for User dr um kits. For details, see page 59.
MODES & FUNCTIONS 40 ■ ASSIGNING A BACKING - Y ou can assign any of the 200 backing accompaniments to play with a User patter n. (For details, see page 34.) ■ EXCEEDING THE MAXIMUM NOTE POL YPHONY - The R Y9 has 28-note polyphony , which means the maximum number of notes that can sound at one time is 28.
MODES & FUNCTIONS 41 11. SONG MODE Song Mode is one of the two main operating modes of the R Y9 (the other being Patter n Mode). It consists of both Song Play and Song Recor d Modes.
MODES & FUNCTIONS 42 ■ SELECTING A FUNCTION - Hold [MODE] and pr ess [P AGE+] and [P AGE-] to step thr ough the various functions. The LCD will display infor mation about the status of each function as you step thr ough them. ■ SELECTING A SONG - When you enter Song Play Mode, you can go ahead and select a song.
MODES & FUNCTIONS 43 ■ CHANGING THE P A TTERN - T o temporarily specify a dif fer ent patter n to hear how it sounds with the song, pr ess [ E ] or [ F ] to position the flashing cursor over the abbr eviation “PTN” (Patter n). Then pr ess [+1] and [-1] to specify the patter n number .
MODES & FUNCTIONS 44 If you tur n both the Repeat and Chain functions on and then pr ess [PLA Y], the User songs will play fr om the top to the end r epeatedly , until you pr ess [STOP]. ■ CLEARING A USER SONG - When the song is stopped, hold [MODE] and pr ess [P AGE-] or [P AGE+] to access the Song Clear function.
MODES & FUNCTIONS ■ COPYING THE CURRENTL Y SELECTED SONG - Y ou can copy the cur r ently selected song to a User song location. While the song is stopped, first select a sour ce song to copy fr om. Then, hold [MODE] and pr ess [P AGE+] once or mor e to access the Song Copy function.
MODES & FUNCTIONS 46 If the LCD displays the wor ds “MEMOR Y FULL”, you cannot r ecor d a User song. T o fr ee up memor y , clear any unwanted User patter ns or songs. (Be sur e to save any impor tant User data first, of floading it to an exter nal storage device such as the Y amaha MDF3 MIDI Data Filer .
MODES & FUNCTIONS ■ ENTERING REAL TIME RECORD MODE - Fr om within Song Recor d Standby Mode, first, pr ess [-1] or [+1] to select the patter n number that you want to be the first par t in the song. Then, simply pr essing [PLA Y] will initiate the r ealtime r ecor ding operation.
MODES & FUNCTIONS 48 The patter n and chor d tracks ar e independent! When deleting a patter n, the succeeding par ts will be moved up by one par t. Ther efor e, take car e that your patter n deletions don’ t alter your song str uctur e in r elation to the chor d track.
MODES & FUNCTIONS 49 RECORDING CHORD CHANGES T o r ecor d chor d changes in the chor d track at specific clock locations in the song, first you must access the Chor d Assign featur e. ■ ACCESSING CHORD ASSIGN - Fr om within Step Recor d Mode, pr ess [CHORD].

MODES & FUNCTIONS 52 ■ DELETING A CHORD BY P ART - After r ecor ding a song, you can go back and delete an unwanted chor d at any time at a specific par t, or measur e location. First, in Song Recor d Mode, pr ess [CHORD] to access Chor d Assign.
MODES & FUNCTIONS 53 The patter n and chor d tracks ar e independent! Y ou can only inser t a chor d by par t, and not event. When inser ting a chor d, the succeeding par ts will be moved back by one par t. Ther efor e, take care that your chor d inser tions don’ t alter your song str uctur e in r elation to the patter n track.

DRUM KIT MODE In Dr um Kit Mode you can select a Pr eset or User dr um kit, assign voices to the pads in a User kit, and designate various settings for the pads in a User kit, including specifying output and accent levels and setting the ster eo pan positioning and pitch tuning for each dr um pad.
MODES & FUNCTIONS 55 PLA YING THE P ADS AND SELECTING KITS. Y ou can generally play the dr um pads in r eal-time r egar dless of the mode you’r e in. Fr om within some of the Dr um Kit Mode functions, pr essing the pad buttons will also display infor mation about the various settings for each pad.
MODES & FUNCTIONS 56 ■ SELECTING THE DRUM KITS - The cur r ently selected dr um kit will depend on which patter n is chosen, since each Pr eset patter n uses a specific dr um kit. Ther e ar e 16 dr um kits in all—12 Pr eset kits (#00 ~ #11) and 4 User dr um kits (#12 ~ #15).
MODES & FUNCTIONS 57 CREA TING A USER DRUM KIT . One of the keys to the R Y9’s flexibility is that you can cr eate up to four of your own User dr um kits by assigning any of the 128 A WM dr um v.
MODES & FUNCTIONS 58 ■ ASSIGNING DRUM VOICES TO THE P ADS - Y ou can assign any of the 128 A WM dr um voices to the pads in a User dr um kit. Hold [MODE] and pr ess [P AGE+] or [P AGE-] to access the voice Assign function.
■ SETTING THE OUTPUT LEVELS - Y ou can designate the output level for each pad in a User dr um kit. Hold [MODE] and pr ess [P AGE+] or [P AGE-] to access the output Level function. The word “LEVEL” will appear in the lower left ar ea of the LCD, and the level setting of the cur r ently selected pad will be flashing.
■ SETTING THE STEREO P AN POSITIONS - Y ou can designate the ster eo pan position for each pad in a User dr um kit. Hold [MODE] and pr ess [P AGE+] or [P AGE-] to access the Pan function. The wor d “P AN” will appear in the lower left ar ea of the LCD, and the pan setting of the cur r ently selected pad will be flashing.
■ TURNING THE CHASE FUNCTION ON AND OFF - The Chase function deter mines which dr um kit will play a patter n. When the Chase function is on, the dr um kit used to r ecor d the patter n will automatically be selected for the patter n playback.
■ ENTERING EXTERNAL IN MODE - Hold [MODE] and pr ess [EXT IN] to enter Exter nal In Mode. ■ SELECTING A FUNCTION - Hold [MODE] and pr ess [P AGE+] and [P AGE-] to step thr ough the various functions. The LCD will display infor mation about the status of each function as you step thr ough them.
■ USING THE RY9 AS A GUIT AR SYNTHESIZER - When a guitar is plugged into the [EXT IN] jack, you can use the guitar to trigger an Exter nal In voice in a variety of ways. Ther e ar e two steps to setting up the R Y9 as a guitar synthesizer: 1. Designating the guitar synthesizer status.
2. SELECTING AN EXTERNAL IN VOICE - Y ou can select any of the 50 A WM nor mal voices to be trigger ed by the notes you play on the guitar . Hold [MODE] and pr ess [P AGE+] or [P AGE-] to access the Exter nal In Select function. T wo lines of infor mation will be displayed in the lower left ar ea of the LCD.
■ TURNING THE EXTERNAL IN ST ART FUNCTION ON AND OFF - When the Exter nal In Star t function is tur ned on, the patter n or song playback will begin automatically with the first note you play on the guitar . Hold [MODE] and pr ess [P AGE+] once or mor e to access the Star t function.
■ SETTING THE BASIC PITCH - Y ou can set the basic pitch of the guitar tuner between “440” and “445”. Fr om within the T uner function, pr ess [+1] and [-1] to set the basic pitch. The basic pitch setting deter mines the overall system tuning for the R Y9.
14. SYSTEM MODE In System Mode you can designate Inter nal or MIDI sync clock, assign the MIDI transmit and r eceive channel for the dr um voices, assign the MIDI channel for r eceiving pr ogram chang.
■ DESIGNA TING THE SYNC CLOCK - Y ou can connect an exter nal sequencer to the R Y9 and synchr onize, or “sync” the two devices together so that their clocks will play in per fect time with each other .
■ ASSIGNING THE PROGRAM CHANGE RECEIVE CHANNEL - Y ou can have the R Y9 r espond to pr ogram change messages fr om an exter nal MIDI keyboar d or sequencer . For example, by pr essing the voice selectors on your keyboar d, you can select the R Y9’ s dr um kits.
■ ASSIGNING THE HARMONY VOICE TRANSMIT CHANNEL - The R Y9 can transmit MIDI signals generated by the Har mony voice (see “HARM 1, 2, 3”, page 63) in or der to play an exter nal tone generator . T o do so, you must assign the R Y9’ s Har mony voice channel to the same MIDI r eceive channel number as the tone generator .
MIDI DA T A BULK DUMP OPERA TIONS Y ou can “dump” User patter n, song and dr um kit data in bulk to and fr om another R Y9 or an exter nal MIDI data storage device (such as the Y amaha MDF3 MIDI Data Filer).
■ DESIGNA TING THE PRESET OR USER NOTE T ABLE - The MIDI note table consists of a list of the dr um pads and a cor r esponding MIDI note number for each pad. When playing the R Y9’ s dr um voices fr om an exter nal keyboar d or sequencer , the dr um voices will play accor ding to the RY9’ s note table assignments.
15. TEMPO MODE In T empo Mode you can set the tempo for the song or patter n playback or r ecor ding. Y ou can switch into T empo Mode and change the playback tempo as the patter n or song is playing. Each Pr eset patter n and song has an “initial tempo” assigned to it.
16. MUTE MODE In Mute Mode you can mute (i.e., switch of f) any or all of the backing accompaniments, even while the song or patter n is playing. ■ ENTERING MUTE MODE - Hold [MODE] and pr ess [MUTE] to enter Mute Mode.
17. BALANCE MODE Balance Mode is in ef fect an on-boar d “sound mixer” that lets you balance the r elative levels of the nor mal voices. In Balance Mode you can balance the volume output levels fo.
■ SETTING A BALANCE LEVEL - Select either the Bass, Chor d 1, Chor d 2, Exter nal In or Har mony voice and pr ess [-1] and [+1] to set the balance level for the selected voice. The volume level of the guitar itself can only be deter mined by the setting of the guitar’ s volume knob.
APPENDIX 77 19. RECALLING THE F ACTOR Y DEF AUL T SETTINGS Y ou can r eset all RY9 settings to their initial default settings at any time. Doing so will clear all the User patter ns, songs and dr um kits you have cr eated.
APPENDIX 78 20. DISPLA Y MESSAGES During operation the RY9 will display various er r or and other messages in the LCD. Below is a list and description of each display message.
APPENDIX 79 21. TROUBLESHOOTING If you encounter one of the pr oblems listed below , please check the possible causes and solutions befor e you assume that your R Y9 is faulty. DISPLAY RECEIV BULK TIME OVER TS NOT MATCH Bulk data is being received from a MIDI data storage device or another RY9.
