CONTROLS AND FUNCTIONS 3 INTRODUCTION 1 ST ANDBY/ON T urns on this unit or sets it t o the standby mode. See page 14 for details. In the standby mode, this unit co nsu mes a small amount of power to receive infrared signal s from the remote control. 2 Remote control sensor Receives infrared signals from the remote control.

C A/B/C/D/E Selects the preset station gr oup (A to E) when TUNER is selected as the input source (see page 22).

CONTROLS AND FUNCTIONS 7 INTRODUCTION This section describes the function of each button on the remote control used to control this unit or other components made by Y AMAHA. The functions of the buttons used to control your other audio components are the same as those of the corresponding buttons on those components.
CONTROLS AND FUNCTIONS 8 ■ Notes on batteries • Change all of the batteries if the opera tion range of the remote control decr eases. • Use AAA, R03, UM-4 batteries for the remote contro l. • Make sure that the polarities ar e correct. See the illustratio n inside the battery compartm ent of each remote control.
CONNECTIONS 9 PREP ARA TION • Do not connect this unit or other com ponents to the main power until all connections between components are complete. • Do not let the bare speaker wires touch each other or do not let them touch any metal pa rt of thi s unit.
10 CONNECTIONS Be sure to connect the left ch annel (L), right channel (R), “+” (red) and “–” (black) properly . Before connecting the speakers, make sure that the power of this unit is off.
11 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION Both AM and FM indoor antennas are include d with this unit. In general, these an tenn as should provide suf ficient signal strength. Connect each antenna corr ectly to the designated terminals. • A properly installe d outdoor antenna provides clearer recep tion than an indoor one.
12 CONNECTIONS ■ Connecting the AM loop ant enna 1 Set up the AM loop antenna. 2 Press and hold the tab. 3 Insert the AM loop antenna le ad wires into the AM ANT terminal. 4 Release the tab. 5 Repeat steps 2 to 4 to insert the AM loop antenna lead wires in to the GND terminal.

14 CONNECTIONS When all connections are complete, turn on the power of this unit. 1 Press ST ANDBY/ON on the front panel (or PO WER on the remote control) to turn on this unit. Press ST ANDBY/ON on the front panel (or ST ANDBY on the remote contro l) to set this unit to the standby mode.
PLAYING AND RECORDING 15 OPERA TION Extreme caution shou ld be exercise d when you play back CDs en coded in DTS. If you play back a CD encoded in DTS on a DTS-incompatible CD pl ayer , you will only h ear some unwanted noise that may damage your speakers.
16 PLAYING AND RECORDING ■ Adjusting the B ALANCE contr ol Adjusts the sound output balanc e of the left and right speakers to compensate fo r sound imbalance caused by speaker locations or lis tening room conditions.
17 PLAYING AND RECORDING OPERA TION • The VOLUME, BAS S, TREBLE, BALANCE and LOUDNESS controls and the PURE DIRECT buttons have no effect on the source being recorded. • Check the copyright laws in your co untry to record from records, CDs, radio, etc.
18 PLAYING AND RECORDING Use this feature to automa tically set this unit to the standby mode after a certain amount of time. The SLEEP timer is useful when you are goi ng to sleep while this unit is playing or recording a s ource. The SLEEP ti mer also automatically turns off any ex ternal components connected to the AC OUTLETS.
19 PLAYING AND RECORDING OPERA TION 1 Press MUTE on the remote control to mute the sound output. The MUTE indicator flas hes in the front panel display . 2 Press MUTE on the remote control again to resume the sound output. The MUTE indicator disapp ears from the front panel display .
FM/AM TUNING 20 There are 2 tuning methods; automatic and manual. Select either met hod according to your preference and the strength of station signals.
21 FM/AM TUNING OPERA TION Manual tuning is effecti ve when station signals are weak. 1 Rotate the INPUT sele ctor (or press TUNER on the remote control) to select TUNER as the input sour ce . 2 Press FM/AM on the fr on t panel to select the reception band (FM or AM).
22 FM/AM TUNING 2 Press FM/AM on the front panel to select FM as the reception band. FM appears in the front panel display . 3 Press and hold MEMOR Y on the front panel for more than 3 seconds. The preset station group and the MEMOR Y and A UT O indicators flash in the front panel display .
23 FM/AM TUNING OPERA TION Y ou can also manually store up to 40 stations (8 stations in each of the 5 groups, A1 to E8). Y ou can then easily recall any preset station s by select ing the preset station numbers where they are stored. 1 Repeat step s 1 to 4 in “A utomati c tuning” or in “Manual tunin g” to tune into a station .
24 FM/AM TUNING Y ou can tune into the desired station simply by selecting the preset stati on number where it is stored. 1 Press A/B/C/D/E on the front panel repeatedly (or on the remote contr ol) to select a preset station group (A to E). The selected preset station group is shown in the front panel display .

28 TROUBLESHOOTING ■ T uner The sound is degraded when listening with the headphones connected to th e CD player or the tape deck connected to this unit. The power of t his unit i s turned off, or th is unit is se t to the st andby mode. Turn on the power of th is unit.
